1 March 2018 A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT March is known as the month that "comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb." By the looks of the recent weather forecast (if you can count on that!), the lion won’t have much of a roar so I am hoping we will soon see some spring-like days and lots of sunshine. Everyone always seems to be more upbeat when the weather starts warming up and we can spend more time outdoors. March is also the beginning of the final third part of our fiscal year. We have a few more months to increase our treasury in order to be able to give needed dollars to non-profit organizations in Brown County. Your opportunity to request awards for your favorite or most needy non-profit in the area is upon us. You can find the BCCWC Community Contribution Award Request form under the Fundraising tab on our website. Please complete and return it by May 31, 2018. I just cannot help but thank you again for all that you have done so far to set us up for another fantastic year of fulfilling our mission - providing charitable, educational, and cultural services to the community. What a fantastic group of women you are!! You deserve this short “Irish Blessing”………………… Helene Rosner, President 2017-18 MEMBERSHIP BCCWC welcomes four new members for 2018-2019: Rosie Jonas, Linda Kriehn, Susan Byrne, and Brenda Brown. Reminder: When you renew your membership, if you have moved, changed your email address, changed your phone number or ANY CHANGES, please circle or highlight the changed information on your renewal form. We do not want to miss any important information and circling or highlighting would help a lot. You can find the link to the membership renewal form on the BCCWC.org home page. BCCWC BIRTHDAY

A PRESIDENT’S REVIEW Janet Clark

The ninth year 2016/2017 of the BCCWC was a transitional year. It was our first year after incorporation and we had a few minor changes to make. We got a new letterhead, no longer needed to keep minutes for general meetings and vot-

ing shifted to the Board meetings. Our newsletters became very important (and longer) as they became a major informational tool. A new project for us last year was the Christmas Tree Gala. A group of ladies gathered to-gether and decorated a Christmas Tree that would be donated to Connect Inc. This fundraiser generated over $2,000 from us for cancer patients and their families. Wealth of Health was the name of our copper and lilac tree and sold at the top tier of trees that went up for bidding. Mahjong has become popular and BCCWC offered lessons for this game that were filled quickly. Game days at the De Pere Community Center began to include this game. Our quilters gener-ously made and donated 10 beautifully made quilts to Habitat for Humanity. We ended this great year with 272 members who helped us to give 9,000 volunteer hours and over $42,000 back to our community.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

FORT HOWARD SENIOR LUNCHEON

There is still time to participate in the

BCCWC Fort Howard Apartments Buffet and Bingo on April 12. It is perfectly acceptable to drop off your dishes at the apartments by 11:30 AM and not work the event. We still need four salads or veggie dishes, one main dish and one dessert.

We have an adequate number of workers, but could use two or three members to help with Bingo from 12:45-2:00 PM. Specific seniors need help with checking and watching their cards and need help distributing prizes. Extra help with bingo helps free the other

workers for cleanup.

Bingo prizes may be brought to the March meeting, to Sherry’s house at 859 Dousman St. 54303 or to the event on that day prior to 12:00 noon. The apartments’ social worker has provided a “wish list“ that is available on the BCCWC.org website. If you are interested in what the list still needs, just give Sherry or Cathy a jingle.

ONE STITCH AT A TIME Please remember to keep those needles and hooks going during this chilly time of the year. There are people counting on us to provide blankets, etc. for the less fortunate. The next collection will be at the May meeting. If you have any questions, contact Jean or Pat.

WELLSPRING Wellspring is in need of laundry products for their guests, including detergent, stain remover, dryer sheets and fabric softener. If you would like to donate, please bring any laundry products to the April meeting and drop off items in the parking lot, Susan Regnier's silver Tucson. Thank you for your generous contributions.

BUILDING QUILTS FOR HABITAT FOR HUMANITY

Thanks to Sherry Campbell and Pam Girtz for presenting Pat Syring's quilt to the Santiago family

at their Home Dedication on February 22.

Next Habitat for Humanity dedication will be: Thursday, March 22 at 5:30 PM. Gina Reinardy will present Mary Schrickel's quilt to the Thao family at their new Habitat home located at 1268 Western Avenue in Green Bay. They always had a dream of having safe, decent and affordable housing. Vinee, her four children and her Uncle were living in a 3-bedroom rental, so space was an issue. With the home being on a busy street, Vinee also had concerns about her children's safety. Watch for news and photos in future newsletters of a quilt being made by some of the Habitat quilters. This quilt may be part of the May 10-year anniversary celebration for BCCWC. For more information about Building Quilts for Habitat for Humanity, contact:

FELLOWSHIP

BCCWC BOOK CLUB Monday, March 5, we meet at 1:00 PM at the Kress Family Library in De Pere. The book being discussed is “Persuasion” by Jane Austen. Our leader will be Bonnie Granius. Monday, April 2, our book will be “Maisie Dobbs” a mystery by Jacqueline Winspear. Gina Reinardy will be our discussion leader. BOOK SUMMARY: Maisie Dobbs got her start as a maid in an aristocratic London household when she

was thirteen. Her employer, suffragette Lady Rowan Compton, soon became her patron, taking the remarkably bright youngster under her wing. Lady Rowan’s friend, Maurice Blanche, often retained as an investigator by the European elite, recognized Maisie’s intuitive gifts and helped her earn admission to the prestigious Girton College in Cambridge, where Maisie planned to complete her education. The outbreak of war changed everything. Maisie trained as a nurse, then left for France

to serve at the Front, where she found—and lost —an important part of herself. Ten years after the Armistice, in the spring of 1929, Maisie sets out on her own as a private investigator, one who has learned that coincidences are meaningful, and truth elusive. Her very first case involves suspected infidelity but reveals something very different. In the aftermath of the Great War, a former officer founded a working farm known as The Retreat, that acts as a convalescent refuge for ex-soldiers too shattered to resume normal life. When Fate brings Maisie a second case involving The Retreat, she must finally confront the ghost that has haunted her for a decade. BCCWC Book Club is open to the public and friends are welcome. You may come to every discussion or whenever time allows.
