Wednesday, March 21 at 6:30 p.m.The OPL Film SeriesResistance in the Streets — Three Visionary DirectorsOne role of theater and film is to inspire personal or societal change through identification with human stories and unassuming heroes. The three films to be shown in the OPL Spring Film Series were chosen because they demonstrate that ordinary lives can inspire change. From citizens oppressed by Fascists in WWII Italy, to a man ill with HIV confronting workplace discrimination, to a Brooklyn neighborhood fractured by bigotry, the dramatization of each plight was meaningful enough to help crack the world open a bit more. The first film to be shown on March 21 is “Rome, Open City” (103 minutes; in Italian with English subtitles). Often listed as influential and a favorite of many noted directors, this masterpiece popularized the Neo Realist movement, a genre where gritty realism and shooting on location contributed to the impact and lasting influence of the work. Directed by Roberto Rossellini and starring Anna Magnani, Rome, Open City is based on true events that occurred during the Nazi occupation of Rome. The other selections in the series are “Philadelphia,” directed by Jonathan Demme and starring Denzel Washington and Tom Hanks, to be shown on April 11; and Spike Lee’s “Do the Right Thing,” featuring Danny Aiello, Ossie Davis, and Ruby Dee, which can be seen on May 16. All screenings are free and begin at 6:30 pm in the Budarz Theater. The series was curated by Bonnie Katz, adult services librarian.

Want to hear an amazing story? When my son, Justin was (I think) 5 years old, we donated a “birthday book” to the Ossining Public Library, and they put a little bookplate on the inside cover saying that’s where it came from.

J will be 20 next month. Today he was driving home and said he thought he’d seen his “History Of Modern China” college professor from Manhattanville College walking on our block, pushing a child in a stroller. He wasn’t sure, and had no idea if the professor lived in Ossining or not, so we went after the guy to see if it was him or not and to say hi.Sure enough, it was his professor, and when we greeted him, he said “You know, I figured you might live in Ossining, Justin. My son has a book from the library that has your name in it from your fifth birthday.” Almost fifteen years later, my kid is in college and his professor’s little boy is reading the book he donated to the library when he was five. ❤️
