He was born exactly one day before me, but in a vastly different world. He was born in Siberia after his parents escaped from Poland and the Nazis, whereas I was born a few miles from Wrigley Field (so, who suffered the most over the years?). Like many refugees, he and his family spent a few years after WWII in Displacement camps, before immigrating to the US. He grew up in the NYC area, where he graduated from Brooklyn Tech High School and Cooper Union College. He then pursued an MS in Chemical Engineering and came to Purdue University. I’m told by his college friends that he hadn’t learned to drive a car while in New York, so before leaving, he obtained a driver’s license and a car. Unfortunately, say these sources, he couldn’t drive very well! Fortunately, all survived this deficiency and he soon met Judy Axelrod, the daughter of a prominent Purdue biochemist, Barney Axelrod and his wife Sara, and a long-time resident of the area. They met at Purdue Hillel and were married at Hillel some 46 years ago. Fortunately, the type of engineering that Leo performed in his professional life could be centered almost anywhere. So, it was quite natural that they eventually returned to West Lafayette in the early 1990s. Obviously, the bond between Leo and Judy and Hillel was real and very strong. Once they settled into town, they recognized that Hillel needed to be rejuvenated now that Rabbi Engel had retired. They first identified and consolidated all the small bank accounts that Rabbi Engel had squirreled away and this became the seed money to help hire a professional director. They then developed the Board of Directors and convinced people from throughout the area and state to serve on this Board. They were quietly persistent and drew many into the Hillel world, some for the first time. This led to a renaissance in Hillel’s interaction with major groups, such as the Jewish Federation of Greater Lafayette, the Jewish Federation of Indianapolis and the Ohio Valley Consortium, that have provided significant funds towards Hillel’s annual operating budget. Throughout the last 25 years, Leo has always kept an eye on the budget, much of the time as Treasurer. Leo was also interested in the building and the need to upgrade the facilities. One of his last efforts on behalf of Hillel was to donate a significant sum to establish the Leo and Judy Weitzman Building Fund for Hillel to be used for building maintenance, or an extensive renovation or even the construction of a new building on the current site. Many of us have joined this effort and Leo’s request was that donations be made in his honor to this fund. It is clear that the success of Hillel over the last generation is due, in large measure, to the efforts of Leo and Judy, and their hope is that this Fund will establish a foundation for success well into the future. Leo will be sorely missed, but his spirit will live on in the activities of many Jewish students at Purdue. He was born in Siberiaafter his parents escaped from Poland and the Nazis, whereas I was born a few milesfrom Wrigley Field (so, who suffered the most over the years?). A WORD FROM THE DIRECTOR

ZETA BETA TAUBy Brett Hollander:

As the year is picking up speed, ZBT has been busy continuing oursuccess as a chapter. After spring recruitment, we had record breakingnumbers for the year and initiated 67 new men into the fraternity. Theyare a great addition to the chapter and we can’t wait to see how theyimprove the Alpha-Alpha chapter in the future.

More recently, our executive board, along with a few other brothers, attended ZBT’s national conference, Dover Days, at the U. of Illinois. Theconference is a gathering of brothers from across the nation. Guestspeakers touch on topics that our fraternity holds close such asphilanthropy, new member recruitment, heritage, and a variety of othertopics. We are looking forward to continuing a great year. Josh Green & Nate Venckus

(Continued from Page 1)The number of students attending programs continues to grow. If program participation continues, I

expect we will surpass the 15-16 school year number of students attending our weekly programs (BagelBreak, Shabbat Services, Torah Study & Shabbat dinners). These are very exciting times at Purdue Hillel!

The start of a new semester opened with stories of Israel & Winter Break at the first Bagel Break. OurJanuary programs included Torah Study, now on Friday afternoon before services, Thursdays “Coffee withPhilip in the Union”, and monthly visits by Inbar Nadir, our community Shalicha. Everyone enjoyed the TuB’Shevat Seder/Shabbat and we had the honor of hosting the Annual Purim Carnival in early March. I amthrilled to see what ICAP and GAPP have planned for the rest of the year as well.

The activities are great and we continue to make sure that Purdue Hillel is the home for Jewish life atPurdue as we build an enduring commitment to Jewish life, learning and Israel, with and for, our communityevery day. Fortunately, a commitment to the Jewish experience is different for everyone and this allowsus to be creative in how we engage students at Purdue. We are excited and I am looking forward to thefinal seven weeks of the semester including, hamentashen baking, a GAPP pot-luck 2nd Seder, andShabbat. I am also looking forward to the Passover Holiday and programs by our Shaliachs, and manyother spring activities, and of course, providing space and study breaks during Finals Week. Everything we do is based upon the support and guidance of our Board and the financial support ofour generous donors. On behalf of the students and the Board, I would like to give you my sincerestthanks and gratitude for making this all possible. I encourage you to join us and help us provide thestudents of Purdue Hillel with the tools to build an enduring commitment to Jewish life, learning, and Israeland to inspire every Jewish student at Purdue University with meaningful Jewish experiences.

Not many people can say they went to Israel with 40 of their closestfriends over winter break. But I can! Birthright was an amazing experiencethat allowed me to deepen my friendships with Purdue Hillel students, as wellas develop new friendships with students from universities in North Texas, allwhile exploring the land of Israel. Everything from the students, the tourguide, and the Israeli soldiers who joined our bus as participants, to late nightreflection sessions, food, and beautiful scenery, those 10 days I spent inIsrael are days I will surely never forget.

Our trip overlapped with a couple days of Hannukah, and it was a prettyspecial experience to be in Israel during the holiday. We learned a lot aboutthe history and traditions that are celebrated in Israel, and were able toexperience, firsthand, how those are similar to and different from the wayswe celebrate in the States.

My favorite memory from my Birthright trip was stargazing in the Negevwhen we spent a night in Bedouin tents. I had always heard such fantasticstories about stargazing in the desert, so I was very excited when I finallyhad the opportunity to try it for myself. Just being in the desert, as far awayfrom sound and light as possible, looking at the stars and taking in the atmosphere was just an incredibleexperience!

I made so many memories on Birthright this winter, and I am so grateful for the friendships the trip wasable to help me build. All of the pictures I took, the stories I heard, and funny memories I made will surelylast a lifetime. Thank you Bus 1371 for a phenomenal 10 days! #1948

ALPHA EPSILON PI

The Purdue chapter of Alpha Epsilon Pi has continued to bea strong Jewish organization on and off campus. Our chapterhas reached an astonishing 44 members, with new members onthe way, and is continuing to grow every year. As one of thefew Jewish organizations on campus, our brothers are dedicatedto getting involved on campus and helping out the community. We are proud to have brothers who are active in/with Jewishlife on campus. We feel strongly about maintaining our Jewishidentity here on campus and we strive to provide Jewishexperiences for all of our members, as well as other students atPurdue. AEPi strives to get involved with the Purdue Greekcommunity as well. The chapter participated in Zeta Tau Alpha’sBig Man On Campus philanthropy event which raised over$100,000 towards the fight against breast cancer. We will alsobe participating in a dog adoption fair and raising money forAEPi’s national philanthropy this semester. We’re really excitedto continue growing and contributing to the Jewish, Greek, student, and local communities here on Purdue’s campus.
