I completed my FAFSA - Now what happens? Monitor your VT email and HokieSPA for notices of important documents we might need and provide those promptly. Be sure to complete your General Scholarship Application before February 15 th at finaid.vt.edu and please see instructions below. For Incoming Freshmen- we will begin mailing award packages for the 17-18 academic year at the end of February. The packages will include a brochure explaining all the financial aid awards, how to compare all your offers and what steps still remain for accepting you awards. For Returning Students – we will begin sending award notices for the 17-18 academic year by email in May, after spring grades have posted. This is a change from last year, but having an accurate GPA will help ensure students receive correct aid packages! Financial Aid Questions and Answers 1. Education Abroad

Planning to study abroad this spring semester? Please make sure you:

Complete the Global Education Documentation Form and submit to the Global Education

Office prior to the semester you will be abroad.

Know when your trip expenses are due. Program fees may be due prior to the semester you

will be abroad.

Determine if and when financial aid will apply. Remember, financial aid cannot be disbursed

until the semester you are studying abroad. Also, for Non-VT and Exchange programs,

financial aid cannot disburse until you have arrived at the host institution. Check with a

financial aid advisor if you’re unsure.

well? Looking for an exciting and rewarding summer job opportunity that pays well? Help us to welcome

our new Hokies this summer! Hokie Passport Services seeks to hire enthusiastic and engaging

student Orientation Assistants to assist with New Student Orientation. These students will help

direct crowds, speak with parents and new students, hand out ID cards, give general directions, and

other duties as assigned. Hours are Tuesday-Friday, 9:00am to 3:00pm July 11 through August 2. Pay

is $12.00 per hour and lunch is provided each workday.

Student Confidentiality (FERPA) As a reminder, the Bursar's Office requires that all third parties, including parents, have a FERPA

passcode in order to discuss details about your student record such as specific charges and payments,

circumstances regarding holds, status and disposition of refunds. Only you may establish, or re-disclose,

a FERPA passcode through your student Hokie SPA.

Choose “University Account Information” Menu

Choose “Family Educational Rights to Privacy Act” (FERPA)

Enter individual’s information and assign passcode

Note: Inform the new authorized individual of their passcode

University Policy on Direct Deposit University policy requires all student refunds, excluding parent plus loans, be sent by electronic funds transfer (Direct Deposit) into a designated account. Failure to enroll in direct deposit will result in refund delays.

Student Login: Login to www.hokiespa.vt.edu

Choose “University Account Information” Menu

Enroll in Direct Deposit (All Other VT Payments (Student Refunds, Travel Reimbursements, etc.))

Enter proper Bank Information, then select “Submit”

Review Account Information, if correct select “Add This Bank”

Select “Exit”

Tax Season Information The electronic 2016 university tax form (1098-T) is available through your student’s Hokie SPA. The

1098-T may allow qualified students and parents to claim an education credit on their annual tax return

for this calendar year. More information: http://www.bursar.vt.edu/students_parents/tax_info.php

Select “Tax Notification” Note: The online 1098-T is only available to students through their Hokie SPA

Important Information for Semester Course Drop & Resignations

Considering withdrawing, resigning, or reducing their course load to less than full-time status, please review our refund policy: http://www.bursar.vt.edu/refunds/refund_policy.php

Completed the Federal Financial Aid Release Authorization? Federal regulations stipulate that Federal Title IV aid, such as Stafford Loans, can apply only to tuition,

fees, room and board. By completing the online Financial Aid Release Authorization, students allow

federal aid to pay miscellaneous charges such as medical clinic charge and library charges applied during

the academic year.
