It begins on Ash Wednesday and lasts for 40 days, including Good Friday and Holy Saturday, but not including the six Sundays within the season. It’s a solemn time which reminds people of the time in Jesus' life when, after giving up his work as a carpenter, he began to teach people about God. Jesus prepared for this by spending 40 days without food alone in the desert. The 40 days of Lent recall Jesus' 40 day fast in the wilderness after His Baptism, enduring temptation by the Devil, before beginning his public Ministry (Matthew 4:2, Luke 4:1-2), as well as Moses' forty-day fast on Mount Sinai (Exodus 34:28). Lent used to be a time for fasting or going without food as Jesus had done. Nowadays many people give up a favorite food they enjoy and often give money to charity. Purple is linked to Lent. In some churches the altar is covered with a purple cloth, the pulpit has a purple 'fall' and the Pastor’s garments are purple. Purple is chosen for two reasons. One it is the color associated with mourning and so it helps Christians think about the sadness of Jesus’ death. The other reason is that purple is the color linked to royalty and so it celebrates Christ’s coming as a King. Throughout most of Christian history, Lent has continued to have two primary purposes: the preparation of catechumens for Baptism at the Easter Vigil, and the baptismal renewal of all the faithful in preparation for Easter. Lent is a solemn and austere time. It is appropriate to veil crucifixes and crosses during Lent and to omit the use of flowers in the worship space. Banners and elaborate entrance processions are not used in Lent. Mid-week services which emphasize preparation for Baptism as well as baptismal renewal are appropriate throughout Lent. FOCUS ON WORSHIP

LENT: Lent is an Anglo-Saxon word meaning "spring." Lent is season of penitence and preparation for the

Triduum and Easter. It begins on Ash Wednesday and lasts for 40 days, including Good Friday and Holy

Saturday, but not including the six Sundays within the season. It’s a solemn time which reminds people of the

time in Jesus' life when, after giving up his work as a carpenter, he began to teach people about God. Jesus

prepared for this by spending 40 days without food alone in the desert. The 40 days of Lent recall Jesus' 40 day

fast in the wilderness after His Baptism, enduring temptation by the Devil, before beginning his public Ministry

(Matthew 4:2, Luke 4:1-2), as well as Moses' forty-day fast on Mount Sinai (Exodus 34:28).

Lent used to be a time for fasting or going without food as Jesus had done. Nowadays many people give up a

favorite food they enjoy and often give money to charity. Purple is linked to Lent. In some churches the altar is

covered with a purple cloth, the pulpit has a purple 'fall' and the Pastor’s garments are purple. Purple is chosen for

two reasons. One it is the color associated with mourning and so it helps Christians think about the sadness of

Jesus’ death. The other reason is that purple is the color linked to royalty and so it celebrates Christ’s coming as a

catechumens for Baptism at the Easter Vigil, and the baptismal renewal of all the faithful in preparation for Easter.

Lent is a solemn and austere time. It is appropriate to veil crucifixes and crosses during Lent and to omit the use of

flowers in the worship space. Banners and elaborate entrance processions are not used in Lent. Mid-week services

which emphasize preparation for Baptism as well as baptismal renewal are appropriate throughout Lent.

A Note from Pastor Fred

A Short History of Lent

The season of Lent refers to a 40 day period leading up to the celebration of Easter. The

English word “Lent” is a funny one. If you lived at a time and in a place where Latin was

spoken you wouldn’t call this time “Lent”, you would use the more precise word

Quadragesima which is a direct translation from the Greek term “fortieth.” When sermons

in the Middle Ages started to be spoken in the language of the people, instead of the elitist

Latin (thanks to Martin Luther and others), the word “Lent” was chosen to speak of this

period of 40 days. Technically the word comes from the Germanic root word Lenz which

simply means long. The days get longer during the Spring, so it’s no surprise this word in

German and Dutch is used for the word “Spring.” Since springtime is the time we celebrate

Easter, the word “Lent” was adopted to speak of this time of new life during Spring. Who

knew?

Interestingly, the earliest of Christians believed Jesus was dead in the grave for 40 hours.

The number 40 has held significant importance throughout biblical history. The rains fell

on Noah in the ark for 40 days and 40 nights. Moses was on top of Mount Sinai receiving

the Ten Commandments for 40 days and 40 nights. Elijah walked 40 days and 40 nights to

the mountain of the Lord. Jesus, most importantly, fasted and prayed for 40 days and 40

nights before starting his public ministry. The earliest of Christians put the 40 day fasting

of Jesus in the desert together with his 40 hours in the grave. It appears Irenaeus is telling

us the earliest of Christians spent 40 hours, not days but hours, fasting and praying in

preparation for Easter celebrations. This is where a translation mistake changed the way

we have and continue to celebrate Easter. A man named Rufinus translated Eusebius’

History of the Church from Greek into Latin. For some reason he put a punctuation mark

between “40” and “ hours.” It gave people reading the letter of Irenaeus the idea that

Irenaeus meant “40 - 24 hours days.”

The exact day Lent should officially begin has been debated for many centuries., Most

western Christians start the 40 day period on Ash Wednesday. Eastern Christians start

Lent on a day referred to as Clean Monday. It is usually the Monday before the Wednesday

celebrated by the West. For centuries a time of feast and festival precedes the time of

prayer and fasting.

In Peace,

Pastor Fred

Flower Dedications

The Ministry of flowers is an important part of the Sunday

Service at St. Luke Lutheran. Flowers are used to beautify

our sanctuary and are a gift to God and those who attend

Worship services.

Altar flowers may be dedicated to “The Glory of God”,

“In Memory of” a loved one or “In Honor of” a special

person, an anniversary, birthday, birth, baptism or other special event. More

than one person may find a certain date important so flowers may be given in

more than one name on any given Sunday.

If you would like to donate and dedicate flowers for any Sunday service,

arrangements cost $27.00 each. You will be billed directly from Coleman

Brothers Flowers and the flowers will be delivered to the church. The flowers

are yours to take home after the service that Sunday or you can ask that they

be taken to one of our ill or homebound members. Please return the container

the flowers are in to the church at your convenience.

You may sign up on the flower chart that is located in the fellowship hall.

Please contact Tammy in the church office or Jean Stewart if you have any

questions. Thank you.

The 2017 Flower Chart is up in the fellowship hall.

The 2017 Flower Calendar is now up in the fellowship hall. To those of you who give flowers every year during the same time frame, thank you. If you’re new to St. Luke or haven’t signed up yet to provide Sunday altar flowers, won’t you consider doing so? Flowers can be planned for a date on or near your special date, to occur yearly. If you would like more information about our Flower Calendar or if you have any questions please contact Tammy in the office at 804-272-0486 or [email protected] or Jean Stewart, our sacristan, at 804-276-2690. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Thank you so much to all the St. Luke

folks for your generous donations to the

Youth Group’s “Soup Pot” on Souper

Bowl Sunday, February 5th.

We collected 403 pounds of canned

goods for FeedMore and were able to

send $470.00 to them as well.

What a great day we had.

And what a SUPER Souper gift.

Pastor Fred’s Mid-week Bible Study

Pastor Fred’s Mid-week Bible Study meets on Wednesday mornings at 10:30am.

Please join us for a weekly study and discussion on scripture. Pastor Fred uses a variety of study meth-ods as we delve into the text of the bible. How do the words speak to us today? How can we apply them to our daily lives? You don’t even need to bring a Bible if you don’t want to, we have plenty at church. Pastor Fred invites you to come and discover new insights into the Bible with him and the rest of the class.

ST. LUKE ADULT FORUM

LENT PROGRAM

For the next five Sundays, our Adult Forum will follow a five-session

video bible study by Max Lucado titled “He Chose the Nails”.

“He Chose the Nails” examines the gifts that Christ gave us at his

crucifixion. These include not only the gift of the cross, but also the gift

of the thorns, the nails, and the empty tomb. The cross is rich with God’s

gift of grace, and as we unwrap them, we will hear him whisper, “ I did it

just for you.”

Here is our Class Schedule for Lent:

March 5 He Chose to BE One of Us

March 12 He Chose to Forgive Us

March 19 He Chose to Invite Us into His Presence

March 26 He Chose to Love Us Forever

April 2 He Chose to Give Us Victory

Classes will be led by Vince Reedinger.

Please join us on Sunday mornings at 9:00am.

The St. Luke Messenger

Lent, 2017 marks the fifth year we have partnered with the national ELCA’s World Hunger’s

40 Days of Giving and the ELCA’s Good Gifts catalog.

Remember our first year—Buck-a-Chick. For just one dollar you could buy a family

a baby chick and start them on the way to supporting their family and also providing a

source of protein in their diet.

The following year we chose to raise money for mosquito nets when we learned just

one bite from an infected mosquito could transmit malaria and lead to death.

In 2015, our goal of $2,500.00 let us buy a simple water well for a village—which

turned into two wells when we were able to match funds with a national ELCA donor.

Last year’s challenge of $150.00 latrines had us upping our goals as we met new

goals each week. In Fall, 2016 we were contacted by the national church offices and

asked to write a few sentences about how we raised over $4,500.00, $3,000.00 over

our original goal of $1,500.00. Our response ended up in this year’s Action Guide

for Congregations. Way to go St. Luke!

What are we doing in 2017?

Nearly 5,000 children die EACH day from diseases like measles, polio, tetanus and tuberculosis -

all diseases that could be prevented with a vaccine. Immunizing a child is one of the best ways to

ensure that a child stays healthy, and a family stays free from medical costs from these diseases,

for years to come.

$30.00 will immunize a child. How many children can we help?

Our Shrove Tuesday Pancake dinner’s voted on this year’s goal of

100 immunizations or $3,000.00.

Please help us meet this challenge!

Dear Friends of FeedMore,

Thank you so much for making an investment

in the future of our community with your recent

gift of 253lbs of food to Feedmore

Your generous gift throughout helped over

213,000 seniors, families and children receive

nutritious meals. You helped fund our childhood

nutrition programs after school and over week-

ends. You helped homebound seniors receive a

daily safety check in addition to one or two

healthy meals each weekday.

You helped neighbors throughout our 36 city

and county central Virginia service area that

depend on our 350 partner food pantries and

soup kitchens for groceries for themselves and

their families.

Once again, please accept our deep appreciation

for your assistance with our programs: The

Central Virginia FoodBank, the Community

Kitchen and Meals on Wheels.

Sincerely yours,

Christy Dalton

Community Events Manager

February 24, 2017 Dear Rev. Marcoux, St. Luke Lutheran Church’s generous gift of $470.00 received on February 17, 2017, will help FeedMore to provide 1,880 meals to food insecure families throughout Central Virginia! On behalf of all of us here at FeedMore and our thousands of clients, thank you so much for your continued support. Together we will deliver hope along with emergency food to families when they need it the most. Please share our gratitude with your congregation. Gracefully yours, Mary A. Samsell Director of Corporate, Foundation Relations

Dear Millie Olson,

Thank you for St. Luke’s generous gift of various household items on Sept 21, 2016

to Housing Families First. That donation will open the door to housing - and much

more - for a family experiencing homelessness here in our community.

Thanks to donors like you, Housing Families First helped 86 families last year.

That’s 243 children and adults! Thank you for making a gift that will open the door

to stability and opportunity for a family facing homelessness.

Sincerely,

Beth Vann-Turnbull

Executive Director

Dear Pastor and Congregation,

Good Samaritan Ministries appreciates your support whether financially,

prayerfully or with your clothing donations. We could not continue to

present the lifesaving message of Jesus Christ without each and every

prayer for the mission.

We are so grateful to be celebrating 30 years serving the Lord! May God

bless you as you continue to witness to Him.

Thank you for your assistance.

Sincerely,

Souper Bowl Sunday sure was a super day for St. Luke!

We collected 403 pounds of canned goods for the

FEEDMORE pantry AND $470.00 toward their food

program! Way to go!

On top of everything - during our own Super Bowl games - the Patriots also

beat the Falcons!

Many thanks to all our volunteers for the great homemade soups and desserts

and helping with kitchen and clean-up duties.

To all of you, we truly appreciate your support of the Souper Bowl project.

It's a great feeling to know as we were nourished with a lovely lunch, we've

provided for others to also receive their daily bread.

Thank you!

Thrivent Action Teams

Living Generously!

“Many companies give back. At Thrivent Financial, we help people live generously.

Our members offer hope, reach out to those in despair and show God's love in amazing ways.”

“Turn your faith into action! Good things happen when people unite to make a difference. Simply identify a need in

your area, organize a team, apply and get going.”

If you are a member of Thrivent Financial and have been on the Web Site, you have seen these quotations. In the past,

Thrivent gave matching funds for projects at the church. Now, Thrivent donates $250/per project for up to 2 projects

per Thrivent member. That means that my Thrivent membership is worth a total of $500.00 to St. Luke Lutheran.

This is not a pitch to get you to become a member of Thrivent Financial; this is a call to the St. Luke members who

have Thrivent accounts. In December, I logged onto the Thrivent Web Site to see if what Mark Gottschalk has

described when he presented to the Women of St. Luke was real. I was easily able to find the Action Team

information. I filled out a plan for the youth of St. Luke to hold a twin sheet drive at the church for Housing Families

First and asked Thrivent for the $250 to purchase blankets.

It took less than a week for Thrivent to respond with “How many Tee shirts do you want with your $250.00?” The

first part of January, I received a box with the gift card for $250, 10 tee shirts (just what I requested), thank you notes

to give out for the folks who give sheets and a packet with ideas as to how to have a successful project. I already

know what I will do with my other $250 grant and John is also a member of Thrivent – so he is worth $500 in grant

money for St. Luke as well.

Why all of this? If you are a member of Thrivent – meaning you have a life insurance policy or any other

accounts, you qualify for the same grants. I will be very happy to help you apply for the money to aid projects

for St. Luke. (If you have a neighborhood project in mind, you can apply for an Action Team Grant. Our son

Rick is doing just that.) We could add thousands of dollars to the good works we already do at St. Luke!!

Sincerely,

Millie Olson

St. Luke’s Celebration Dinner

On Friday, February 24, 2017 we had our first Annual St. Luke Celebration Dinner.

The event was held at the American Legion Post 186 on Otterdale Road in Midlothian.

We enjoyed cocktails and an Italian Dinner Buffet of pastas, soup, salad, spicy sausages and Chicken Parmesan.

We had some divine cakes and pastries for dessert, too!

Following our delicious meal, our entertainment was provided by ”The Virginians”, a Barbershop Quartet.

This Barbershop quartet was a much larger group of "barbershop" style singers.

Thank you to the Vonada gamily for organizing this great dinner and fellowship event. We would also like to

thank the Men’s Group for their assistance and sponsorship of this event as a Valentine gift to our congregation.

Pastor Fred and Lesley Marcoux and Lesley's brother Gary,

and sister-in-law Sue enjoyed the Barbershop theme !

“The Virginians”, singing their hearts out.

Awesome!

How about some music provided by our very own Calvin and Sydney Vonada.? Yes please!
