Update
HEFCE’s new open access requirements for the next REF are now in force, and the Library,
with Research and Enterprise, have been working to support colleagues across the University
to prepare for these new requirements. We have made our core message as simple as
possible:
“Deposit your accepted manuscript into USIR when you receive the acceptance message, and
we will be in touch if you need to do anything else”
We have been organising communication activities to disseminate this message and
emphasise the importance of this issue
University wide activity
An all staff email from Professor Nigel Mellors was sent on 11 March with an internal news item published the same day
All academic staff were emailed by the Library on 1 April
All PGRs received communication through the SPoRT Blackboard site on 9 March
PGRs in each School were emailed at the beginning of April
Local activity
Flyers have been distributed to academic staff pigeonholes in several Schools (CSE, SoBE and ELS)
Posters have been distributed (SBS, SoBE, PGR Study Space in Clifford Whitworth)
All Research Centre Directors have been offered additional support which has led to extra emails sent by the Directors, presentations at SREC meetings and even a planned presentation at the ELS School Congress
Future work
More flyers and posters are available if Schools can recommend where they should be distributed
Library staff continue to be available to attend events or provide text / briefings on request
We will now be compliance checking each deposit into USIR and contacting authors with advice if their paper is non-compliant
From April to July, the Library will be piloting an approach using public databases to identify some of the papers that have not been deposited so that authors can be contacted about these
If you would like to suggest other ways in which we can support compliance please contact us.
Many thanks
The Open Access Team
