1. Don’t forget the caterpillars. Main-tain a steady population of butter-flies throughout the summer and fallby ensuring that their offspring hasenough to eat.Milkweed is themonarchcaterpillar’s snack of choice, whileblack swallowtail larvae love to feast onherbs such as parsley and fennel.

2. Keep your garden insecticide-free.Toavoid killing the insects that you are try-ing to attract, use gentler alternatives toinsecticides to keep nuisances at bay.Ladybugs are a great choice, as they areharmless to plants but get rid of aphids.

3. Favor bright colors. Butterflies are es-pecially attracted to yellow, pink andorange flowers, so plan your colorscheme accordingly. Flowers with short,tubular heads or flattened heads areyour best bet.

4. Plant native perennials. Zinnias pro-duce sweet nectar that butterflies love,all summer long; they are also native

to the Midwest. Purple cornflo-wers are another good choice,and they keep blooming wellinto the fall.

Which spade should you use for diggingearth? For dividing perennials? Do youknow what a trowel is? Gardening spa-des take up huge areas of display spacein garden centres; they may be round orsquare, wide or narrow. In fact, amateurgardeners often find it difficult to choosethe right one. So, what spade shouldyou buy?

You’ll need at least two spades, but ifpossible, buy three. The first one is theindispensable round spade. Spades witha rounded blade are used to performseveral gardening chores: dig-ging holes for planting seed-lings, digging up roots, dividingperennials, turning the soil andtransporting materials (gravel,compost, soil, mulch, etc.). It’s apractical tool that you’ll usea lot.

The other recommended spadeis the trowel. This mini-spadeis useful for planting in flowerbeds as well as in pots. It’s usedthroughout the year, for bothexterior and interior plants. Thethird spade to buy, if possible,is the square spade. Althoughit’s not as generally useful as around blade, the square shape is

more efficient when the time comes todivide perennials. That’s because it cutsthe roots instead of tearing them, as arounded spade would.

Regardless of which gardening tool you’relooking for, take the time to choose theright one before buying it. You need tofeel comfortable when handling it, so imi-tate themovements you’ll make when gar-dening, and take into account its size,weight and ergonomics. Strengthening your lawn is a good placeto start and will stack the odds in yourfavour. A healthy lawn is denser, sothere’s less room for weeds to grow. Toimprove the health of your lawn, mow itto a height of six to eight centimetres.Leave the grass cuttings right on thelawn. Water less often but more thor-oughly. Reseed sparse areas and, if neces-sary, replace the grass with another typeof ground cover in areas where there’sstill fierce competition between weedsand grass.

You may also find it useful to buy a testkit to determine the acidity of your soil.Grass that grows in soil that is too acidicwon’t be as strong. You can help by neu-tralizing the acidity, sometimes by justadding compost.

Be patient and don’t get discouraged.While you’re waiting for the results ofall your hard work to show, feel free touse a weed removing tool to uproot re-calcitrant plants. But whatever you do,try to be a good citizen and resist theurge to use products that are harmful tothe environment.

Learn how toattract — and keep close — these wingedbeauties by following these smart tips.

1. Don’t forget the caterpillars. Main-tain a steady population of butter-flies throughout the summer and fallby ensuring that their offspring hasenough to eat.Milkweed is themonarchcaterpillar’s snack of choice, whileblack swallowtail larvae love to feast onherbs such as parsley and fennel.

2. Keep your garden insecticide-free.Toavoid killing the insects that you are try-ing to attract, use gentler alternatives toinsecticides to keep nuisances at bay.Ladybugs are a great choice, as they areharmless to plants but get rid of aphids.

3. Favor bright colors. Butterflies are es-pecially attracted to yellow, pink andorange flowers, so plan your colorscheme accordingly. Flowers with short,tubular heads or flattened heads areyour best bet.

4. Plant native perennials. Zinnias pro-duce sweet nectar that butterflies love,all summer long; they are also native

to the Midwest. Purple cornflo-wers are another good choice,and they keep blooming wellinto the fall.

5. Set up some drinking andresting spaces.Use flat rocksto give your butterflies a spotto spread their wings and takein some sun. You could alsoplace a shallow water dishwith a layer of sand at thebottom so your new guestscan quench their thirst.

Which spade should you use for diggingearth? For dividing perennials? Do youknow what a trowel is? Gardening spa-des take up huge areas of display spacein garden centres; they may be round orsquare, wide or narrow. In fact, amateurgardeners often find it difficult to choosethe right one. So, what spade shouldyou buy?

You’ll need at least two spades, but ifpossible, buy three. The first one is theindispensable round spade. Spades witha rounded blade are used to performseveral gardening chores: dig-ging holes for planting seed-lings, digging up roots, dividingperennials, turning the soil andtransporting materials (gravel,compost, soil, mulch, etc.). It’s apractical tool that you’ll usea lot.

The other recommended spadeis the trowel. This mini-spadeis useful for planting in flowerbeds as well as in pots. It’s usedthroughout the year, for bothexterior and interior plants. Thethird spade to buy, if possible,is the square spade. Althoughit’s not as generally useful as around blade, the square shape is

more efficient when the time comes todivide perennials. That’s because it cutsthe roots instead of tearing them, as arounded spade would.

Regardless of which gardening tool you’relooking for, take the time to choose theright one before buying it. You need tofeel comfortable when handling it, so imi-tate themovements you’ll make when gar-dening, and take into account its size,weight and ergonomics. For comfort —and to prevent blisters — opt for toolswith padded handles.
