March 2016
Community Activities and Seniors Program for February has been well attended. We held a
foot care afternoon at the CWA hall on Thursday 18th March. Isabelle Springall (RN) from the
Quilpie Hospital attended. Eleven people come along to have a pedicure, and a foot spa.Tina
Johnston,Quilpie HACC Services painted nails. This is a great service to have for the Seniors
especially when some are unable to do their own nails. It’s nice to see the Seniors come
along and have a chat, cuppa and a laugh while having their feet attended to.
Craft Activities
The Seniors Craft Group have been tie dyeing cushion covers, cloth bags, and zippered
cosmetic bags. This was a craft they thoroughly enjoyed. The
craft group painted a welcome home banner for Jane Tully
who has just returned home from having radium
treatment. The joy on Jane’s face when we held up the
banner up for her to see was priceless. Jane’s comment was
it’s nice to be home and to be back with my friends in the
seniors group. The craft group have also been busy making craft items for a get-well
package for Gwen Hennessy, who had a fall recently and is recovering at Renaee’s place. We
wish Gwen all the best with her recovery.
Before After
Water Exercises
Seniors are enjoying Thursday mornings at the Quilpie Shire Council Pool with Carolynn
Taylor. Some of the seniors have commented they can feel a difference
from week to week with the water exercises. The water exercises will
continue until Thursday 25th March. If anyone would like to join in, you
are most welcome. The lessons start at 10:00am on Thursday mornings
and cost $5 a lesson. Contact Tina Johnston or Michelle Donohue if you require transport.
Healthy Ageing Lunch
The first Healthy Ageing Lunch for 2016 was held at the Imperial Hotel on Tuesday 23rd February. It was well attended and everyone enjoyed the lovely meal that was provided. It was a great way to start the year off and catch up with other seniors.
Why do we celebrate St Patrick's Day?
This event commemorates the life of St Patrick, a missionary who
worked in Ireland and is said to have died on March 17 in the fifth
century. He played an important role in converting the inhabitants of Ireland to Christianity. Now, his feast day is an opportunity to celebrate
Irish culture.
Why do we have Easter Eggs?
The custom of giving eggs at Easter celebrates new life. Christians
remember that Jesus, after dying on the cross, rose from the dead. This
miracle showed that life could win over death. For Christians the egg is
a symbol of Jesus' resurrection, as when they are cracked open they
stand for the empty tomb.
Tina and I would like to wish you all a Happy Easter!
Enjoy having time with family and friends

A LITTLE HUMOUR
“The Funeral"
An older lady passed away recently. She’d never been married, and she specifically asked
that her casket service not have any male pallbearers.
Her contract with the funeral parlor stated: "They never took me out when I was alive, so
they sure won't be taking me out when I'm dead."
"Smart-Alec Parrot"
One of the entertainers on a cruise ship was a magician. Since the passengers were
different each week, the magician always had a new audience. So he always did the same
tricks.
The captain's parrot, however, was stationed in the performance hall, and observed the
magicians tricks week after week. Being a wise old bird, he eventually figured out all the
magician's secrets.
Then, irritatingly, he started heckling during the show. “Hey, why is every card the same?
It's in his cape pocket! It's a different rabbit!"
The magician was fuming, but it was the captain's parrot so he couldn't really do
anything.
One terrible day, however, the ship had a boiler explosion and sank. The magician wound
up on a small raft in the middle of the Atlantic with, as luck would have it, the captain's
parrot.
They glared at each other with visible hatred but didn't say a word. This went on for
several days.
Finally on the tenth day, the parrot couldn't take it any longer. Exasperated, he said,
“Okay, I give up. Where's the ship.
