March 2016 Sapphire Scene RESIDENT OF THE MONTH: LAURA GEMMELL Laura was born on January 24, 1965 at 1:24 pm in Dillon, Montana. According to her mother, it was a very difficult birth. Her earliest memory is an Easter trip her family took to Roundup to visit her grandparents and the rest of the clan. Her mother was the most inspirational person to her as a child. Laura had two special pets growing up: A cat named Tiny and a small dog named Candy. In the summertime when she was a child she would run around the neighborhood with all her friends, ride bicycles and spend time at the local swimming hole. Her favorite game growing up was Trouble. Laura’s nickname was “Kitten.” As a child, Laura was fearful of bees, darkness and silence. She was also afraid of going blind. She recalls many family gatherings and a Polish rhyme about magpies that she would mime with her hand. Leona Hunt was her best friend in kindergarten and still is to this day. What a wonderful tribute to friendship! In school she always made the honor roll, but her favorite subject to study was Biology. She doesn’t recall ever being a “social butterfly.” As a teenager her idol was Andy Gibb, for no other reason than he was just so cute! She had some pretty unique summer jobs growing up too: Pipe-moving, “flunky,” haying, and selling grit newspaper. Laura served 12 years in the National Guard. During that time she worked as a semi driver and a mechanic. She also worked in the supply room and did clerical work. Her rank was sergeant. She considers the most difficult aspects of participating in the military the physical training required and the tear gas chamber. Laura’s favorite job ever was working at Skeet’s Café. She says they had the best strawberry pie ever! Her ideal job as of today would be “Retirement.” Laura has one daughter, Ashley Lorraine, who is 26 years old. She loves her with all her heart. Ashley’s birth is Laura’s happiest memory. Ashley lives in Texas and has given Laura three beautiful grandchildren, two girls and a boy. Laura says that as a parent she was strict but fair, and describes herself as “happy, happy, happy” in her role as parent and grandparent. Laura has two brothers, both older, Kenny and Gary. Laura was married to her husband, George, for ten years. They met while enlisted in the National Guard. Laura considers the most significant political event in her lifetime to be the administration of Ronald Reagan. If she could live in any other historical time, it would be during the Victorian era. If she could meet any historical figure, it would either be the Pope or Jesus. Her most memorable traveling experiences have been coastal rides and going to Disneyland. Her favorite types of music are classic rock and Christmas music. Her favorite holidays are Easter and Christmas. Her favorite places to visit are the Pacific Coast and the Redwoods in California. As a child she enjoyed visiting The Lagoon in Salt Lake City, Utah. She was also able to bring her own daughter, Ashley, to The Lagoon. The funniest event that Laura can recall happening in her life is the time that her grandfather hit a rainbow trout with his cane at Clark Canyon Dam. The accomplishment Laura is most proud of is her military service of 12 years. In her spare time, she enjoys traveling, cooking and decorating. At this point in her life, her greatest fear is of complete darkness. Laura has lived in Hamilton for two and a half years. Prior to that, she lived ten years in Brookings, Oregon, and was born and raised in Dillon, Montana. Laura’s mom and dad live in the area and she is very close with them. Stop by Canyon View and say hello to Laura. She is a genuinely kind and lovely lady. We’re so glad you’re here with us, Laura, and you have our unending gratitude for your service to our country!

THE LEPRECHAUN
In Ireland, I asked a man, how to make a wish come true. He said, “Go catch a leprechaun, that’s all that you have to do.” “How do I catch one?” I asked the chap. “That’s easy,” said he “build a leprechaun trap.” “Here’s a list of what you’ll need: A length of rope, a bundle of s4cks, the gold ring from your right hand, and a horseshoe to ward off his tricks.” “Get him a bunch of clover sprouts and a peacock feather for his hat.” I got the things and set the trap then down with the liFle man I sat. I sang out the magic words the man said the leprechaun would hear then dove on the s4ck pile where the liFle person would appear. The s4cks caved in, my ring vanished and on this you can bet as the liFle man danced away… I wished we’d never met! By: Dominic “Flom O’Nic” Farrenkopf

Happy St. Patrick’s Day-March 17th Why Shamrocks?
Many claim the shamrock represents faith, hope and love or any number of other
things, but it was actually used by Patrick to teach the mystery of the Holy Trinity and how three things, The Father, The Son and The Holy Spirit, could be separate entities, yet one in
the same.
