at MTS Centre!!

Page 2: March 2016 Newsle er Wolseley School

Great things are happening at Wolseley School! Our students are working hard on their academics, as well as participating in the many activities that are offered by our staff and volunteers. Here are a few highlights:

Our skaters went to the MTS Centre this week and showed excellent sportsmanship. Thank you to all the fans who came out and supported our team!

Patrols are working hard to make sure our students are safe on their way to and from school. Thank you for their commitment.

Several students will be attending the upcoming Divisional Science Fair- thanks to parents and staff for their support.

Four students attended the Quantum Art program held at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and Prairie Theater Exchange. They will be part of a performance celebrating the arts on March 17.

We are very proud of our achievements and hope that you will come and celebrate with us during the upcoming Student Led Conferences, March 17 in the evening and on the morning of March 18. Report Cards will be distributed on March 16.

Have a wonderful and restful Spring Break!!

Principal’s message

10 Things Your School Age Child Wants

you to Know

1) I need to explore and practice becoming more independent.

When you have confidence in me, I feel good about myself and can develop new skills.

2) I appreciate that you understand my need to “me.”

I love that you celebrate that I am unique and may not be exactly like anyone else in my family or other kids in my class.

3) I need some down time.

I enjoy all my activities but I need some unstructured, unscheduled time in order for my brain to develop. Too much screen times means no rest for my brain.

4) Let’s keep our relationship strong.

Even though I spend more time with my friends, I still need to have time with you.

5) I’m still learning how to behave.

If I make a mistake with my behavior, I need you to reassure me that our relationship is okay and then help me understand what went wrong.

6) Help me cope with stress.

Although stress is normal, I need your help to deal with stressful times. Help me organize my thoughts and feelings about the world and cope with the things that worry me or make me feel sad.

7) Set reasonable limits for me.

I like having input about rules but deep down I like knowing that you can take charge when I need you to.

8) Show me that you are happy to see me at the end of the day.

I need to know that my family accepts and loves me no matter what.

9) Make our home a safe place.

Protect me from things I cannot handle. Help me figure out what is safe and appropriate for my age.

10) I still need hugs!

I still need physical closeness and comfort!

In room 17 we had a wonderful adventure in Australia and are now safely back in Winnipeg! We looked at x-rays of some marsupials and drew them in chalk. We used the green screen and made a film about Australian animals, the children really enjoyed talking about what they had learned about in the video. We also made a rap video about symbiosis! In music we learned to sing the Kookaburra song and sounded beautiful singing it. Things are settling back into normal routines again and we are still discussing our next adventure in learning, we can't wait!

We have been learning about the climate of tropical rainforests and plants and animals that are found there. Did you know that chewing gum was originally made from chicle, the sap of the sapodilla tree, which grows in tropical rainforests of Mexico and Central America? Your parent’s and grandparents might remember chewing chiclets gum when they were little. We got to chew gum all day on our 100th day of school. On February 26th we held Shop’s Day featuring activities and snacks from the tropical rainforests. The students worked together to plan and run a business, as well as shop at each other’s centers.

Thanks for brainstorming lists at home about “what trees are good for.” As our knowledge about the forest and all of the interrelationships grew, we added to our mural of “Why Forests Matter.” It has been great watching the students talk about what they should add next. They have added a housing development, a factory and a hotdog truck to the mural. At the moment they are adding to the mural, illustrating how people enjoy and litter the environment. The mural shows interrelationships between people and animals and the environment. It includes the varying roles and points of view. The children have also created dioramas to reflect their understanding of the forest community. We have looked at many books, both fiction and nonfiction including some aboriginal legends. Ms. Wedlake came in to do printmaking of animals. We have sketched animals, made footprints of animal feet taken from real animal molds, and sketched animals on stones aboriginal style. Currently we have been studying wolves, their body language, listened to a recording of wolf sounds and felt a wolf pelt. This next term I am anticipating the kids creating a movie of what they have learned.

This month in Room 3 students have created art pieces inspired by artist Heather Galler's work. We especially took note of her use of patterns in her art. Take a look at our bulletin board in the hallway to see what was created. We also practiced our sculpting skills and created faces that soon will be painted. Just recently we completed the book "Love That Dog" by Sharon Creech that explores a boys experiences with poetry. We are currently going through the poems we have written this year and are publishing some of them in personal poetry anthologies. The creating of our Canadian Geographic Regions videos continues with Sean. We are also starting a study on First Peoples of Canada, beginning with a look at their origin stories. Students have been practicing mindfulness and will continue to practice various strategies to be mindful.

In Math we have been introduced to integers (and the rules for (calculating solutions). We continue to grow and develop our strengths when working with equations (WWE) and their arithmetical operations. The students will begin to explore geometry and shapes. Geometric shapes have also been integrated in science with our study of structures and designs. We are well into our presentations and completing the last few projects.

Room 8 has been busy over the last month. We are embarking on stop-motion video projects to show what we have learned about Canadian animals. The students are working with a partner to build dioramas and plasticene figures as part of this inter-disciplinary activity. Thank you to Sean Free for his enthusiastic support. The students accomplished the goal of reading 5000 pages throughout January and February. This reading challenge encouraged addition and subtraction of 4-digit numbers because we had to track our daily totals and figure out how many more pages we needed to get to 5000. There was a lot of reading happening and a Valentine's party ensued as a reward for their hard work. "Minute to Win it" activities encouraged manual dexterity, fine motor skills and literacy skills. We completed reading the novel "Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIHM" which engendered lots of class discussion. We were very encouraged to see the interest and focus of the class on this old "classic". The students then got to watch the movie based on that book and compare the two genres. We are beginning our study of light and sound in science and our social studies project of looking at our personal histories, ancestry, and where we all come from. Our regular routines continue. Thank you to all who are supporting the home reading program. It definitely makes a positive difference in your child's progress at school.

100 day was an exciting and challenging day in Room 9! We learned about multiplication to 100, doubles to 100 and our compatible numbers to 100! If you want to know how to make numbers to 100, these students can tell you! We have also begun an inquiry learning how to create buildings and bridges, towers and homes. We are experimenting with shape, design and materials to create shelters, homes and structures! We have lots of opportunities for some hands-on learning!

In Math, the majority of students are able to carry out 2 by 1 multiplication problems independently and through mastery of their multiplication table are able to better understand part-whole thinking, division, and fractions. As their confidence in multiplication and division increases, they are better equipped to deal with algebraic concepts.

In Science, we have continued our study of structures and students have shown great deal of interest in sky-scrapers and bridges. We are currently in the process of transition from a theoretical aspect of structures to a more hands-on phase of our unit.

In Language Arts, our novel study of “RED WOLF” continues. Students are continually providing reading responses about once a week. Further, students have been working on their spelling books as well as their handwriting books, We are wrapping our writing assessments using the 6 traits of writing and students have produced one narrative piece, one informational piece (on structures) and one persuasive piece of writing using exemplars and background information provided in class.

In Social Studies, we will be doing some introductory research on Explorers and we think this unit could continue after Spring Break.

In Health, we will be exploring ideas around online safety and responsible digital citizenship.

February is gone and that brings us a little closer to spring – but not yet. Our bears are still hibernating but the older students have been having lots of fun going through the process of using the green screen technology to create a movie of going on their own bear hunt. The students are looking forward to sharing their movie once they are finished.

The younger group has been having fun with snow – real snow, pretend snow (whipping cream). They were playing with it, swirling it around and letting it fly. They’ve been singing and acting out the poem “I’m a Little Snowman” with great enthusiasm – especially when they get to melt away into a puddle. Making a good soft, fluffy snowman is a process and this group got it just right with great looking snowmen.

The Music therapy sessions continue to add beautiful music in Rm. 21 on Friday morning. Students especially enjoy the parachute songs which have all kinds of objects flying through the air. This month the snowballs and popcorn have been popular.

March is music festival month, and all 3 Wolseley choirs are busy preparing their choral selections. In addition to getting ready to share our music at the festival, rooms 3 and 10 are becoming acquainted with music that will be presented by the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. All choral classes are held at Westminster United Church745 Westminster Avenue. General admission remains at $4.00 per session with free admission for children 12 and under. $25 season passes (admission to all festival sessions and concerts) and $10 programs are also available. It is difficult to give an “exact time” of performances as some groups are moved ahead depending on whether or not the previous group has arrived. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to share music with other choirs and to appreciate performances by others. You are encouraged to attend your child’s performance (if possible) and to enjoy some of Winnipeg’s finest children’s choirs. We will attempt to provide an opportunity later in the year if you are unable to attend the Music Festival. The following dates and (approximate) performance times are as follows:

Monday Feb. 29 at 12:30 Rooms 1 and 2 Monday March 7 at 10:00 Rooms 3 and 10 Monday March 7 at 12:30 Rooms 8 and 9

We are attempting to provide Wolseley shirts for all students; if your child has a shirt, it would be great if he/she could wear it on the performance day with black or dark pants or skirt . More information will follow with permission slips. March 8 is the day that rooms 3 and 10 will attend the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra performance at the centennial concert hall . Students will have prepared for the presentation by experiencing the music in various waysactive listening, recorder playing, movement and background information so they can relate to the music being played and recognize instruments of the orchestra.

Thank you for supporting our

Wolseley musicians!!

In March all the classes will be learning about fitness. We will do some fitness testing, and engage in moderate to high intensity fitness activities. We will do a variety of jump rope activities, circuits and games until Spring Break. Speed skating, basketball and badminton will be wrapping up in late February. Thank You to Linda for running the badminton club. Grade 4,5 and 6 students will start running club in March, and it will run until early June. If you could help in the morning or after school, Ms Finch would be extremely grateful. ASP students will be doing Bocce Ball, Bowling Club at lunch. Jen Finch

March arrives with a hope of Spring weather as our French classes finish up our study of French culture and the Voyageur along with a brief review of the Canadian provinces and ter-ritories. Next we’ll be talking about the changing season and the clothing that will be changing too, as we go from heavy winter outfits into lighter Spring ones.

MARCH SOCK HOP After the success of the last sock hop we knew that there had to be one more to send off Winter. March 4th (630-830pm) is the date and DJ K Chedda will return to spin some tunes. We are fundraising this time to support Hospitality House. They have been responsible for sponsoring a family of Somali orphans who needed to leave Saudi Arabia. These children are being housed and cared for by Hospitality House. The full story was attached to your February 15th “This Week at Wolseley” email. We are asking for a minimum $2/person donation and/or items such as clothes, toys, and non-perishable food items. BACK OF THE SCHOOL COMMITTEE The first official meeting to chat about the huge backyard space was February 29th. If you missed the meeting and are interested in talking about this space or joining the committee email Marla at [email protected]. More information about what was discussed about this area will be in the April newsletter. PEACE GARDEN UPDATE We will be meeting this week to chat about a possible plant sponsorship program for children and families of Wolseley School and possibly with alumni too. Our landscape professional Mel has decided on the shrubs and trees for the Peace Garden space. Winnipeg Foundation Grant has been submitted and the Evergreen Foundation grant will be submitted in March. These will pay for greenscaping. An Assiniboine Credit Union grant is in the works too. The Glenlea Plant fundraiser will be going home at the beginning of March and due back after Spring Break. They have changed their system to include online ordering now which is great. All money made from this fundraiser will go towards this year’s Peace Garden planting & other garden additions. Feel free to pass the plant-ordering link to friends and family. This is our big year for planting and hopefully completing our Peace Garden. Please email if you have any garden or sponsorship ideas. TEACHER APPRECIATION LUNCH, PICNIC, & GRADE 6 FAREWELL These three committees are now beginning to meet and to start the planning required for these events to be successful. They are all great events and we look forward to all sorts of fun for everyone. Thank you to the parents who have been volunteering their time and sharing their ideas. If you are interested in helping in any way, email

us at the email below. PARENT COUNCIL VACANCY We are still in need of a secretary for the Parent Council. If this sounds like something you’d like to do. Please email us. If you are unsure of what this entails, pop in at our next Parent Council meeting on March 9th. We promise that we do not bite and have a great group of parents at our meetings. PIZZA LUNCHES Thank you to Jen Davis and Eveline Buehlman for once again co-ordinating pizza lunches! Besides providing a hot pizza lunch for students once a month, this is the primary fundraiser that parent council does to create enough revenue to cover our budget. There is no pre-order form. Prices are $2.50/slice or 3 slices for $6.50. N/K students and their caregivers are welcome to participate by coming to the gym at 11:30. Grade 1 - 6 students will eat in the gym at noon. All students are welcome to stay for pizza lunches. The next pizza lunches will be: Friday, March 11th, April 8th, & May 20th. Library News...

Things in the library and computer lab have been very busy this month with the arrival of the green screen! Students in room 3 have been working on promotional videos for Canada’s different geographic regions, while the N/K room visited Australia. The grade one and two’s have been learning about internet safety and how to use it while exploring different websites about the weather. Room 9 was busy making Valentines Day art using sound waves and room 8 has been learning about stop motion and are working on making their own stop motion video using Ipads!

The library will be continuing to change over the next month with new furniture and work centers for the students. The idea behind this is to create a maker space for the students where they can explore and build using different tools like Kinex, Lego and Origami and will challenge them to be creative and think outside the box. Feel free to stop by and see all the exciting changes!
