From the Editor

Welcome to the March edition, and thanks to Jenna Wheatman and Mark May for their contributions. The Press Reports in this edition cover the final races of a cross country season, which has seen an increase in the numbers participating in the North Yorks and South Durham League, and as a result scoring girls Under 13 Girls, Under 15 Girls and Women’s teams. We were also placed fourth of 15 teams overall. Hopefully we can get more boys and senior men competing next season. I am hopeful that we will be able to stage a ‘home’ fixture once again after the demise of Filey. Thanks to several new members, we ended the East Yorkshire League on a high note with winners of two fixtures, and improved team results. Next month sees the start of the Track and Field season, and also many road races that are popular with club members. I have highlighted these in the Fixture List. There is a new Parkrun starting at Dalby Forest on 19 March. The Summer Handicap series starts on Monday 4 April. In addition there will be fell races and multi terrain races, so there is plenty for everybody to look forward to.

Jenna Wheatman. BSc. MSST

This month instead of some injury advice, I thought I would show you the progress of the building works being done at the premises’

A dream 7 years ago to convert a derelict Victorian Coach House into my very own dwelling is finally coming

true.

Pro-Am Sports injury clinic is run from an outbuilding which was originally a Victorian coach house built in

1890's. It was then turned into unbelievably a world war 2 air raid shelter on one side and at some point a

double garage on the other at ground floor level. The upper floor has always been left empty. Sadly it had

just been left empty for at least 6 years prior to us moving in. 7 years ago we managed to convert part

(digging out the air raid shelter) of the building to create my treatment room, reception and the double

garage became the rehabilitation gym on the ground floor. The upper floor above the treatment room was

also boarded out. Here is what the outside looked like after and how it looks now with the new dormer (I am

gutted we did not take pictures of the air shelter or double garage before the 1st part of the project).

Some of you may know that I bought the main house with my mum and the plan was for me to convert the

outbuilding into my own dwelling. With lots of saving I got Martin Ellwick to draw up some plans to convert

the upstairs into a dormer bedroom en-suite and to have an extension added to the front of the building to

move the gym into, so the former gym could become a lounge. After looking at costs we have put the

extension on hold and have made the hard decision to lose my rehabilitation gym so I can still have a lounge

area with a lovely log burner. Here are some of the before and after pictures. (works carried out by Andy

Whitelaw)

Building projects are never without their problems, we were very unlucky that prior to any building work starting we had a

leak in the gym section and the whole floor had to be taken up and we found the previous builders had not levelled the

floor, so in goes 100ml of concrete. The bad luck did not stop there, the concrete mix was not right and started to

crumble so it is having to be redone done but once that is done I can crack on with decor.

Mini Biography

Mark May

Years as a runner; 20 months (plus 20 years on / off running, unenthusiastically alone). Although I represented my school and district at many sports I managed to avoid running further than was necessary. This approach to sport continued after leaving school when I spent 15 years playing local league football with minimal running. In my early thirties I joined the Intelligence Corps TA and started running to improve my fitness. I became quite good at running 1.5 miles (Basic Fitness Test distance) and beat the rest of the squad

Page 9: March 2016 Athletics Monthly Magazine March... · 2016-03-17 · 2016 Road Race Rankings O. Willis M. May T. Carrington Men 10K C. Allen M45 Dewsbury 41.26 Half Marathon P. Markham

and PTI (being first into the showers and breakfast is a great motivator). Since then I continued to run on my own but never really enjoyed it and, as a consequence, tended to pick short, flat routes. After joining Yorkshire Coast Homes in July 2014, Shaun Tymon and Sarah Cowen encouraged me to join the YCH running group. After a few weeks my running began to improve and I decided to enter the Scarborough 10k (my first race). This whetted my appetite to improve my running and I decided to attend a couple of SAC training nights to see if it was for me. I was made to feel very welcome by everyone and decided to join the club....... Something I wished I'd done twenty years earlier. Best Performances ; York Millennium Bridge 5k (22:52) Scarborough 10K (47:16) Snake Lane 10M (79.04) GNR Half Marathon (119:58) Favourite race; I would have to say the Scarborough 10k as it was my race in 2014 and I achieved a pb in 2015. I also enjoyed the EYXC league and the May Beck 3 Crosses race. Favourite Athletes; All the team members at SAC, they are so inspirational and supportive. If I had to choose 'famous' athletes I would pick: Favourite female athlete; Paula Radcliffe Favourite male athlete; Daley Thompson Targets; To keep improving my times and try to get under 45 minutes for 10k. I would also like to try a few fell races and maybe one of the shorter Hardmoors events. Ambitions; To keep enjoying my running. Also, during the last year I have managed to keep up with Jon Poulter in a number of events (currently 4 wins each in our head to head). I would like to continue this as long as possible whilst Jon inevitably gets back to his previous level and helps improve my performance on the way. Funniest Moments; I seem to have a knack of overtaking Mally Sweetlove on the final descent of EYXC races and, whilst overtaking Mally down the last hill at Sledmere, he shouted his words of encouragement (friendly abuse) at me. I burst out laughing and couldn't stop laughing for the rest of the race. The other runners must have thought I was crazy.

19 club members competed in the final fixture of the East Yorkshire Cross Country League which was held at Sewerby, on a course that was badly affected by above average winter rainfall which was exacerbated by overnight rain. Whilst some last minute alterations were made to the worst areas that were knee deep in rainwater, the course which is normally benign, was considered to be very challenging.

Jack Robertson overcame the adverse conditions to finish first and was 91 seconds clear of Bridlington Road Runner’s Phil Taylor who was later crowned the League Champion. Due to his university studies, Jack has only had one other race in the league this season which was at Langdale End when he also a clear winner. Emma Clapton Four of the club’s top junior athletes represented North Yorkshire Schools at the English Schools National Cross Country Championships, which brings together the best athletes in each of the 45 Counties in England to compete for the honour of being the best in the Country.
