Rev. Lawrence R. DeLong, Pastor

Ash Wednesday was a day this building was living and breathing. An odd thought, but stay with me. From our first Ash Wednesday service at eight a.m. through the end of Session at nearly nine p.m.,

hundreds of people flocked through, breathing life and joy and a spirit of hope into the space these walls enclose.

Our friend and old-school gentleman David Moore was remembered, cherished, his life celebrated, and his faith held up for all to see and hear, his family and friends demonstra ng the winsomeness of a life lived well for Christ.

At The Source, the Spiritual Life Center was crowded with those who sought an anchor to begin their Lent, and words of hope and healing. A erward, new members shared a meal with the Session, and were joyfully received into our family.

Then Session crea vely addressed how we grow and meet needs as a church, and closed their mee ng with a sense of work well done.

And in all of these things, we gained yet more insight into how God uses us, as individuals and as a community of faith.

A good place to start our Lent.

LENT

Sunday service time change—Starting May 3 At its February mee ng, Session discussed at length how best to worship God in our Sunday services. Over

the past several years, we’ve tried a few different worship schedules, and we have been listening carefully to your comments and sugges ons.

In this light, Session unanimously decided that beginning with the first Sunday in May, we will return to a single service at 9:30. The choir will be present for the en re service.

Perhaps the most compelling reason for this change is one comment heard over and over: “I love it when we’re all together at the same me.” May we not only be present in body, but present in a spirit of love, fellowship, and praise!

Internal Shrinkage I used to work in retail before I became a pastor. This me of year, the

months a er Christmas, is when stores start their inventories. It is a lengthy and tedious process, but it is also essen al in keeping a retail store running effec vely and efficiently.

Stores do this for two reasons. One, retail stores do inventories to determine shrinkage, which is a term for loss of merchandise. Second, retail stores do inventories to find out what doesn’t sell well, and clear it off the shelves to make room for the new stuff.

You might think it is easy to figure out what doesn’t sell, but I once worked in a baby store called Bellini. The owner sold everything for babies including high-end cribs. She thought that it was the cribs that made her money. At the me, she didn’t do inventory. Some of employees convinced her to start inventory, and when she did, she found out that she was losing money with the cribs. We suggested to the owner to get rid of the cribs. She refused and was out of business within two years.

Inventory finds out where you are shrinking and what’s clu ering your space.

The season of Lent (the 40 days before Easter) is when we take inventory of our spiritual lives. This is a me to determine if in the past year we’ve experienced some internal shrinkage.

Has something in your rela onship with God been lost along the way? Is something clu ering your space for God? Do you have a sense that you’re not as happy, not in as close rela onship with God (and perhaps others) as you used to be? Do you find that you’re a shadow of your former, spiritually robust self?

A spiritual inventory can help show where we need refreshing and where we need to make room for God. Take advantage of what we offer to help you take inventory. The sermons during Lent are on forgiveness. Lenten devo onals are available at the Welcome Centers and Faith Forma on Kiosk. Take my class on “Living Into Lent” on Monday mornings at 10 a.m.

“Yet even now, says the Lord, return to me with all your heart.” (Joel 2:12)

And we respond: Search me, O God, and know my heart;

test me and know my thoughts. See if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlas ng.

(Psalm 139:23-24)

Lent is a Journey

“Your a tude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who being in very nature God, did not consider equality with

God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human

likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death

—even death on a cross! (Phil. 2:5-8 NIV)

Lent is a journey: It can be a physical journey (fas ng). It can be a

spiritual journey (prayer and repentance). Or it can be the same old, same old; no change required. How does the season of Lent work for you?

For me, it’s all about a tude. I must want to par cipate in the Lenten journey. I take a downward journey, side by side with Jesus as he experiences the depths of repulsion by the religious elite. As I follow Christ’s example of humbling himself in word and deed, I realize my own need for great humility. I must take stock of my words and my deeds. I must be honest in my assessment of where I have fallen short of the glory of God and repent of my transgressions. It’s never easy—but the journeys taken during Lent have been worthwhile and a blessing. I wonder if you experience Lent in a similar way.

There are five weeks of Lent le , me enough for us to follow Christ’s example of humility. Yet Christ had not sinned. Christ had no need to repent. Christ gave himself up, on the Cross, so that we might know his forgiveness and love of us. Perhaps this truth of Christ’s example “made himself nothing,” will empower you to stay on your journeys during the final weeks of Lent.

You will find me spent reflec ng on these things will be worthwhile, and you will be blessed. And when you are blessed, those around you are blessed and God is given all praise and glory.

The peace of Christ be with you,

Rev. Paul Phillips, Pastor of Care

Gratitude for Stephen Ministers from one in the midst of crisis:

“We are so grateful for our Stephen Ministers that words cannot describe! My husband has Alzheimer’s. Some days are good, others I fill the pool with tears. A friend who had not seen me in a year said that I am accep ng this be er than last year. I believe that God had helped me through my Stephen Minister, someone walking beside me that has made a big difference. I know I am going to lose a lot, but I have someone to help me graciously accept the losing. What a gi this is from God!”

From one who has come through to the other side of the valley:

“Fourteen months ago, I was at a point where I needed someone to talk to about the struggles in my life. My pastor recommended I consider mee ng with a Stephen Minister—another man, trained as a caregiver, who would walk with me during this difficult me. Trus ng someone with personal informa on about my life was something I feared at first, but my pastor reassured me that everything was confiden al, so I agreed to give it a try. I’m so glad I did!

“Some mes it is important to be able to talk with someone who was not in my regular circle of friends. My friends certainly con nued to have a very important place in my life, but I also needed someone who could see me objec vely and non-judgmentally. He encouraged me not to give up, but to pick up and keep going forward. My Stephen Minister walked with me through a really dark part of my life. He did not try to solve all my problems but lovingly, as a Chris an brother, walked along with me through this valley in my life. If you are dealing with some type of crisis or difficulty in life, I encourage you to meet with a Stephen Minister. You won’t regret it!”

We welcome two new Stephen Leaders to our team, who were commissioned on January 25. Gee-Gee Smith has been a Stephen Minister for only one year, but she brings a life me of experience to the leadership role. She a ended training last July in Dallas and has been working with the leadership team since then. Originally from the Philadelphia area, Gee-Gee has been a music therapist and professional counselor for over 30 years. She brings the gi s of communica on and discernment to our Referrals Team.

If you need a Stephen Minister, Gee-Gee will be one of the people you may talk to in order to be paired up with the right one.

This is Pa Bright’s third year as a Stephen Minister. She trained in January in Orlando, but we put her to work this past fall learning her new role of recrui ng from a re ring leader. A caring person, Pa is involved in Women’s Ministries and Network of Caring. She will bring gi s of organiza on and a en on to detail in her new role of Recrui ng Coordinator. Pa is from Oklahoma.

If you wish to become a Stephen Minister, Pa is the one to talk with.

Both Gee-Gee and Pa have a deep love for the Lord and a desire to serve this congrega on through Him.

Sunday Morning Adult Bible Study

Every Sunday at 9:45 in Classroom 5

So, What’s This

Thing Called the

Holy Ghost?

Many years ago a coworker of mine asked me this ques on – just in passing, at work, over the side of the cubicle. She said, “I understand the Father and Son, but what is this ghost thing?” I stu ered out an answer that may have included something about God within us. It really caught me unaware – here I was thinking about where to go for lunch, and wham – I’m hit with a pre y complex theological doctrine.

Don’t you be caught unaware - in March the Sunday morning Adult Bible study class will examine Jesus’ teaching about, and the promise of, the Holy Spirit.

Our leader for March is Helen Phillips. Come and learn together. Coffee and goodies will be there, along with a free study guide.

Lent is an excellent me to join the class, every Sunday morning at 9:45. You will be warmly welcomed!

Valley Readers Monday, March 23, 1:30 p.m.

ALL THE LIGHT WE CANNOT SEE by Anthony Doerr is a novel that is

inven ve and beau ful. It was an instant New York Times bestseller. It is a Na onal Book Award finalist.

Although set in Germany and France during World War II, it is not a “war novel.” The author’s focus is on the interior lives of his two characters. Marie-Laure is a blind 14-year old French girl who flees to the countryside when her father disappears from Nazi-occupied Paris. Werner is a gadget-obsessed German orphan whose skills admit him to a brutal branch of Hitler Youth. Never mind that their paths don’t cross un l very late in the novel, this is not a book you read for plot. This is a book you read for the beauty of Doerr’s wri ng and for the way he understands and cherishes the magical obsessions of childhood. Marie-Laure and Werner are powerful examples of the way average people in trying mes must decide daily between morality and survival.

You are invited to join us on Monday, March 23 at 1:30 p.m. in Classroom 5. Eloise Fredrickson will be our discussion leader. If you have ques ons, please call Anne Morrison at 399-0762.

Safety, something to watch for By Chris Erickson, Parish Nurse

Safety…can mean something different to everyone. Here is a li le

quiz: (1) Have you ever fallen?

(2) Is your home safe?

(3) Do you do things to keep you safe?

(4) How safe is your health?

These are some of the ques ons that could have many answers. How safe are we? Is our mobility safe? Have we fallen due to dizziness, medical condi on or just tripped over something like small pets?

“Falling the Good Way” was held here on February 10. With about 20 people a ending, very serious and good ques ons were asked, and a request was made to present the program again. Did you know that at Valley Presbyterian Church head ushers and a person from the volunteer medical team are present at each Sunday service to assist if there is a need or concern? The medical team volunteer sits in the last pew row in the church, and the head ushers are visible by doors and in the narthex. If you need something or you are not feeling well, know that these wonderful people are there for you.

Is your home safe? Can you safely walk around your house and your yard, or are there many uneven surfaces or furniture in the way? Is there good ligh ng in the house and outside the house especially by the doors and sidewalk? Are things stacked up so high that you need a ladder to get to them? Do you have a lockbox from the Fire Department?

Are you doing things to keep you safe? Do you walk out of a building with someone else when it is dark outside? Do you lock your house? Do you lock your car? Do you take things of value out of your car before it is parked outside? Do you take driving classes if you have not been driving for a while? Do you let others drive if your vision, mobility or sensi vity of lower extremi es are impaired?

Do you regularly see your primary care physician? How many medica ons are you taking? Do you know what your medica ons are for and the side effects of each of them? Do you monitor your blood pressure, your sugar level, water, and food intake? Are you drinking enough water each day? Do you wash your hands? Do you know how to use your walker or cane, or have been instructed on it? Do you take a few moments to sit on the edge of a bed or chair when you get up?

It is always me for safety. We can all be safe, wherever we are: at home, at church, or visi ng family or friends. Let’s watch for safety and implement safety precau ons for ourselves and for others.

The dog rescue I founded in Michigan was pu ng together their newsle er, and one of the volunteers wrote an ar cle called “’Lifehacks’ for Dog Owners." My friend, who is also one of the directors of that rescue, thought there was a typo in the headline because she had never heard the term “lifehack.” I assured her it was a well-known term in current pop culture (par cularly on Facebook and other social media), but she was concerned that others, like her, might not know the term. My shock quickly turned to the need to right a wrong, because not knowing about lifehacks is a travesty!

So what are lifehacks? They are basically li le ps to make your life easier. The word “lifehack” is derived from the computer term, “hacking,” which refers to breaking into a system or piece of so ware and modi-fying it. Some mes this is done for malicious reasons, but for many people it is used to make something, like a smart phone or tablet, do things they wouldn't nor-mally be set up to do, but that make them more useful or more personalized. A lifehack typically takes com-mon items and makes them work be er, or in ways you might not have thought to use them.

Here are a couple of examples of lifehacks that I thought were very clever:

In my opinion, some of these are life-changing! If you’d like to explore more of these great ideas, here

are some ways to do it: If you have a Facebook ac-count, search for “Lifehacker,” and then browse (and like!) their page. For the rest of you, Google “lifehacks” and have fun checking out all the sites that exist on the topic. I es-pecially like the one at the diycra s site. The full link is h p://www.diyncra s.com/1693/lifehacks/top-68-lifehacks-

and-clever-ideas-that-will-make-your-life-easier.

I will, as always, post this ar cle on our website (New & Events>Blog Ar cles) so you can go there and click that link rather than trying to type it all in. You will also find that link in the first few results that come up when you Google “lifehacks.” Another good way to find a bunch of lifehacks would be to Google “lifehacks,” and then choose “images” for your results, because they are very o en single images demon-stra ng a hack.

For the record, we did keep the term “lifehack” in our newsle er. I hope we widened the horizons of our readers who were previously unfamiliar with the term, and inspired them to do a li le online research, just like I hope I’m doing for some of you.

News of Note Kay Albrecht, Music Director

As I write this ar cle for the March Valley Voice, I am recalling Pastor Paul’s excellent sermon on “Gi ing the Gi of God.”

Our church has been richly blessed with many gi s from God, and a huge one is Joel Pierce! Joel was hired to be the accompanist to the choir and music coordinator for the Source Services. However, in the short

me Joel has been with us, he has con nued to expand and share his outstanding talents/gi s for the glory of God.

Following is a li le informa on about “our Joel” to let you get to know him be er:

Joel Pierce is a pianist, accompanist, organist, conductor, and private piano instructor from Vail, Arizona. His first and most influen al piano teacher was his grandmother who began teaching him when he was eleven years old, and at age fourteen, Joel began his first job - sharing his musical gi s with the family’s church. As a young man, Joel’s interest in music was not limited to the piano. He sang with the Tucson Arizona Boys Chorus as well as the Arizona All-State Choir. Joel has also played the violin with the Tucson Philharmonia Youth Orchestra and Tucson Junior Strings. Though he has pursued many musical avenues, the piano has always been his passion. A er studying with Dr. Paula Fan at the University of Arizona, Joel obtained his Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance in 2012.

Today, Joel’s posi on at VPC includes responsibili es as Assistant Director of Music, choir accompanist, hand bell director, and music coordinator for

The Source. In addi on, Joel is also the pianist, organist, and choir director for Our Mother of Sorrows Parish in Tucson, as well as leader of the contemporary worship service at Risen Savior Lutheran Church. Joel teaches private piano lessons to children ages 6 to 12. He also plays regularly for musical theatre produc ons with the Arizona Repertory Theatre at the U of A and other produc ons in the Tucson area.

Joel is an AVID New England Patriots fan so, needless to say, Joel was a very happy young man at the end of this year’s Super Bowl!

How very blessed we all are to have Joel as part of our family, sharing his extraordinary gi s with us here at VPC.

Session Report - February 18 Session began on Ash Wednesday with the joyful business of

examining and welcoming new members to Valley Presbyterian Church! (Names and photos in another sec on of this issue.) Reconvening a er sharing a light meal with these deligh ul people, we proceeded to review how our new structure and process are developing.

Reports on building security, signage, and the forwarding of our overture to Presbytery were given. A le er from the Valley Presbyterian Church Founda on offering the earnings from their 2014 investments to help meet the capital expenditures planned for 2015 was received with gra tude and thanksgiving, remembering that the Founda on helped with the reconstruc on that was needed a er the flood of two years ago.

Session accepted Peggy Ackerman’s resigna on as Church Administrator, effec ve February 15, 2015, and authorized the Personnel Commi ee to begin the process of finding a successor immediately.

The Terms of Call for our Pastors include a Clergy Renewal Leave in the seventh year of service (this was granted to John Dunham in 2011). Pastor DeLong’s leave was approved for this year.

Seeking to find a way to recognize our congrega on who are moving out of the area in a construc ve manner, Session directed that we begin a new sec on in our bulle n, tled “Transi ons,” that will note these friends and neighbors. As with those who are hospitalized, the congrega on will be encouraged to let the Church know of people whose names should be included.

Session closed with a devo on based on Paul’s gree ng “to the saints” in the beginning of Romans.

Subject for February will be

“MOVING.”

…in the tradition of the desert fathers and mothers…

Spoonful of Manna By cmmolski

A nomad in the desert I beg for food from above Send manna, holy Father Let me taste Your tender love. A morsel of your kingdom is all that I seek Lord, a piece for your children, the kernel of your heart A parcel of your grace to share, with all I find Empty, broken and in despair. A spoonful of Your manna Seasoned with joy So hardhearted bi erness will be no more. From bread you blest, a nibble So I may begin to understand My Savior’s disappointment and sadness with sin. Let me sip the wine of Redemp on, Partake in the fruits of Paradise, Sup in company of Your divine presence.

(Note: cmmolski is a group member whose work has been widely published. We call her Carol Molski.)
