March 2015 Hershey Publ ic Schools, P.O. Box 369, Hershey, NE 69143
www.hpspanthers.org (308) 368-5572
The third nine weeks of the 2014-2015 school year ends on March 12th. This was
originally scheduled as a half day of school for students. Because the student body met
their goal on the amount of food donated to the Sutherland/Hershey food bank, they will
not be in session at all on March 12th. There will be no school on March 12th. This
month, on March 4th, students will be inducted into the National Honor Society. I want
to congratulate these students as well as all of our students who have worked hard this
year academically and in extra-curricular activities.
I want to take this opportunity to welcome Mr. Jeff Steinbeck to Hershey Public Schools.
Mr. Steinbeck has accepted the 7-12 High School Principal position for the 2015-2016
school year. Mr. Steinbeck is currently the Principal at Adams Middle School. Mr.
Steinbeck taught at Hershey from 2000-2009 as a Business Teacher and Girls
Basketball coach. He left Hershey to begin his administration career in North Platte
Public Schools. We are very excited that he will take on the 7-12 Principal duties as Mr.
Troxel will be retiring at the end of this school year.
In the next few months students will be taking assessment tests. It is very important that
they get an extra amount of sleep the night before the tests. It is also important for
parents to inform their children how important assessment tests are as they give the
school and state information as to our students’ progress. It is very important for you to
encourage your kids to do as well as they can on the upcoming state assessments.
Students perform better when they receive encouragement from home. Encouragement
can go a long way in making every day better for a child. The state will be ranking in
order from the top to the bottom the schools in Nebraska in how students performed in
reading, math and science in each school and as a K-12 district as a whole at each
subject area. Rankings will also be given on how districts improved from one year to the
next at each subject level. We might have some snow days yet in March so I will wait
until the April newsletter to let you know if we have any days to make up and what the
last day of school will be.
2
In March I will be working with the students, staff and school board in establishing goals
for Hershey Public School. It is very important to set goals so that everyone has a focus
on what will be important educationally for our students in the future. We will be having
a school board work session on March 4th to discuss Hershey School goals. During the
work session the board will review the priorities that the student council and staff came
up with and then they will establish their priorities for the future.
March 3rd is Nebraska Teacher Recognition Day. Let the teachers know you appreciate
the hard work they do in educating the children of the Hershey School District.
Have a great month!

News from High School Principal
“The March wind roars
Like a lion in the sky
And makes us shiver
As he passes by.
When winds are soft,
And the days are warm and clear,
Just like a gentle lamb,
The spring is here.”
-Author Unknown
I can usually tell when the walleye’s really take off by the number of cranes that are
here. I haven’t seen many yet, but like any other year they will arrive by the thousands
and will endure the March blizzards like they have for thousands of years. We will also
3
endure the March weather and take the nice days with the bad ones. The walleye bite
will also take off and I will pursue piscatorial happiness.
We will begin the scheduling process the first of March and hopefully get a schedule
built sooner than we did last year. Scheduling isn’t difficult if we can get the kids to sign
up for the classes they need and want. The problem lies in the fact that many of our
students look for an easy path. They want to be a student aid one period, a mentor
another period, and take a study hall. This is what I hear “I don’t want to take that class,
I don’t like the teacher, or that class is too hard”. I’m afraid those excuses are not valid
ones and we are here to provide education not recess periods. Parents, don’t allow
your child to take the easy road! We are doing a serious injustice to our students if we
allow this. Life has no easy roads! It seems it has been a tradition at Hershey for the
seniors to take a pud schedule their last year. Why? They won’t get many easy
schedules when they go on to college.
The infamous NeSA tests will begin the end of March and continue into April. The 8th
and 11th graders have already taken the writing test. I couldn’t believe how serious the
8th graders were. Miss Lapp had these kids prepared and they were pumped to do
well. Mr. Rolofson felt the juniors would do well also. We were visiting with some
seniors and they didn’t realize that every public school was ranked in the state. One girl
said she would have taken the test serious if she would have known this. I hope all of
kids take these tests serious and do the best they can possibly do.

NEWS FROM THE ELEMENTARY PRINCIPAL
The third quarter of school ends on Thursday, March 12, with report cards to be handed
out the following week. I ask that you look over the report with your child and discuss
his or her academic strengths and weaknesses. As always, don’t hesitate to contact
your child’s teacher if you have any questions concerning his/her grades.
4
The month of March includes many interruptions in the routine and flow of things here at
school. With spring break and achievement testing days there are a lot of distractions
and time off that affects concentration. I ask that parents help their child stay focused
on their school work throughout the month; it will surely pay off as the last quarter
begins and, as you know, goes by so quickly. By keeping on top of things, we can
avoid any surprises of poor grades showing up prior to school dismissing for the
summer.
Sincerely,
Jason M. Calahan
Elementary Principal
In Honor of Dr. Seuss's Birthday the 6th grade class will present a play, "Fox in Socks"
on March 2, 2015 at 1:15pm in the west gym.
The 6th grade class chose the Dr. Seuss books to use, wrote the script during reading
intervention/enrichment time and made props in art class. The students will perform for
grades PK-5.
ACHIEVEMENT TESTING DATES
Students will be taking the spring NWEA MAP achievement tests in March. Students in
grades K-6 students will test between March 10th and April 1. Teachers will be sending
notification to parents of each grade’s dates and times.
5
Parents are asked to see that their children get a good night’s sleep, eat a good
breakfast and come to school with a positive attitude so they can perform their best on
the achievement tests.
MARCH CHARACTER COUNTS PILLAR – CITIZENSHIP
The Character Counts trait for the month of March is Citizenship.
To begin the month and promote the pillar of citizenship, students are asked to dress in
purple on Tuesday, March 4th, 2015.
An individual who exhibits the character of Citizenship is doing your share to make your
community a better place for everyone. Good citizens are also good neighbors. They
respect authority and protect the environment.
Students who were nominated by their teachers for exemplifying the 6 pillars of
A special Thank You goes out to the following:

PROM LETTER
TO: Juniors/Seniors and Parents at Hershey
FR: Brittney DeBord/Prom Sponsor
DATE: February 20, 2015
SUBJECT: Details regarding Prom and the After Prom Party
The following is a schedule of events and reminders concerning Prom at Hershey.
Please read this information carefully as it will answer many questions you may have.
Decorating for juniors and their parents: The week before Prom juniors will begin
assembling the decorations after school and through the evenings. We will need extra
white Christmas lights and extension cords. Please put your name on these items so
we may get them back to you. We have some that we carry from year to year to use for
decorating but having too many is better than not enough. Friday, March 20th, beginning
11
after school juniors and parents will be setting up for the Grand March in the east gym
and loading items that need to be taken to the Quality Inn and Suites. There is a
considerable amount to do so please plan to help if you can. Saturday, March 21st at
6:30 a.m. juniors and parents will meet at the Holiday Inn Express to set up and blow up
balloons for the dance. Each year the goal is to complete the decorating at the Quality
Inn by 11:00 a.m. I would appreciate it if junior girls do not schedule hair appointments
before 10:30 or 11;00 so they can stay and help at the hotel.
Grand March: A sign-up sheet for the Grand March will be passed around in English
class. Students that choose to participate in the Grand March need to arrive at the old
gym no later than 4:00 p.m. Please enter through the bus doors. Students will be given
specific instructions regarding the Grand March at that point. Participants will then line
up alphabetically according to the male’s last name. The Grand March will be held in
the new gym and it begins at 4:30. It usually lasts approx. 25 mins. Parents and friends
are welcome to take pictures during and after the Grand March. The east doors will
open for the community at 4:00. Please remember that this is a formal event so please
dress accordingly. Students can plan to eat after the Grand March. Please don’t
schedule dinner reservations before 5:30. Only beverages and snacks will be served at
the dance. The Grand March is optional.
Pictures: George Hipple Photography will be taking the pictures. They will send
picture packets to the school the week of prom which will then be issued to the
students. Individual and group pictures will be taken at the Quality Inn which is where
the dance will be held. Pictures are taken as students arrive. Please bring your picture
packets with you to the Quality Inn and have them filled out. Plan to arrive at the
Quality Inn any time between 6:30-7:15. The group pictures will be taken at approx.
7:50 after all individual pictures are taken. Only those individuals who receive an
invitation or were invited by a Hershey Junior or Senior are allowed in to the dance.
Slide Show and Dance: The juniors are preparing a slide show which features all of
the juniors and seniors at Hershey. The program and slide show will begin at approx..
8:00 p.m. at the Quality Inn which is where the dance will be held. The dance will
follow the slide show. The dance will last from approximately 8:00 until midnight. If any
student leaves the dance early, s/he will not be allowed back in. When students arrive
at the Quality Inn, there will be a police officer present to perform the breathalyzer on
each attendee. Should a student test positive for alcohol, they will be cited by the
officer and the school policy will be strictly enforced. Several Hershey staff members
will be on hand to supervise.
After Prom Party: The junior parents will be sponsoring the After Prom Party. It will be
held at
Wild Bills. (Formerly the Cedar Bowl) It will run from 12:00 a.m. until 2:30 a.m. Those
12
attending must show up by 12:30 a.m. Wild Bills will be providing food and beverages.
There will be a sign-up sheet in Ms. DeBord’s room the week before Prom. Parents will
be notified if their child signs up but doesn’t show up. Parents will also be notified if
their child leaves the After Prom Party early. We encourage all to attend and join in the
fun! Each junior and senior who attends will receive a t-shirt and water bottle all will be

College Planning Bulletin A monthly college planning guide for Nebraska high school students
March 2015
What happens after you submit the FAFSA? If you submitted your FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), here’s what will happen next:
Expect your SAR
You will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) acknowledging that your form was processed. Review your SAR for accuracy. If changes are needed, make them at fafsa.gov. Did you use IRS Data Retrieval?
If you did not use IRS Data Retrieval to provide income tax information on your FAFSA, we encourage
you to update your FAFSA at fafsa.gov and use the IRS Data Retrieval process. Review this handout or
watch this video for instructions. If you don’t use IRS Data Retrieval, your college(s) may require you to
provide a copy of your IRS tax transcript.
Expect a financial aid award notification
The colleges you listed on the FAFSA will send you a financial aid award notification (by mail or
electronically) detailing the assistance they’re offering. They may offer a combination of scholarships,
grants, work-study and student loans. Respond to each notification (most students accept all award
packages until they make their final college selection).
Keep looking for scholarships!
Many local, state and national scholarships have deadlines in March, April and May. For local and state
scholarships, visit ScholarshipQuest at EducationQuest.org.
Juniors: It’s time to start your campus visits!
Start looking at colleges your junior year so you can narrow your choices by the time you’re a senior. If
your school has a spring break, that’s a perfect time to schedule a campus visit.
Follow these tips:
Explore your career interests. Before you determine which colleges to visit, think about your career
interests and then research colleges that fit your interests. Visit the Exploring Careers section at
EducationQuest.org for free resources.
Check out college websites. You’ll find admission requirements, academic and social information, and
campus photos or a virtual tour. You may even be able to schedule a campus visit.
Schedule your visits at least two weeks in advance. Ask for appointments with an admissions
representative, financial aid counselor, and a faculty member in your area of interest.
14
Visit while the colleges are in session. You won’t get the true flavor during breaks or finals week.
Be prepared with questions to ask. It’s important for YOU to ask questions, not just your mom or dad.
Talk to a faculty member about upper-level classes in your anticipated major. This will help you
understand the coursework that will be required and the degree of difficulty.
Ask the financial aid counselor how the college may offset tuition costs and about college-based
scholarship applications and deadlines.
Helpful resources at EducationQuest.org
The “Selecting a College” section walks you through college selection steps.
The “About Nebraska Colleges” section provides cost and contact information for Nebraska colleges.
College Profiles has information about colleges in Nebraska and across the country.
We want to see your campus visit photos! Share your campus visit photos with EducationQuest via Twitter (@FreeCollegeHelp) using
#govisitcollege. We may use them in a future commercial!
Don’t forget to apply for EducationQuest’s Scavenger Hunt Scholarship!
Apply by March 31 for EducationQuest’s Scavenger Hunt Scholarship. You could earn $500 toward your college education! Here’s how it works:
1. If you haven’t already, complete a profile in ScholarshipQuest at EducationQuest.org. ScholarshipQuest is a scholarship search tool with over 2,000 Nebraska-based awards.
2. If you are a Nebraska resident in grades 9-12, you will see the EducationQuest Scavenger Hunt Scholarship as one of the scholarships that will appear on your results page.
3. “Scavenge” around the EducationQuest website to find answers to questions in a survey. EducationQuest will draw a winner from those who answer all questions correctly. The winner will receive
$500 to invest in a NEST 529 College Savings Plan. March “To Do” List Seniors
