EDITORIAL: Pat would like to thank the club for the wonderful bouquet of flowers and the gift that she received from the club at the time of her illness, time being spent in the Costa del Sol hospital and recovering at home. Also the best wishes received by both emails and telephone from members and friends. Not forgetting those that cooked and provided dinners, much appreciated. It is great being an I.C.E. mem-ber and the support available. An experience that I cannot remember much about, Terry tells me, is being in the observation ward. Although I must say I was well cared for, but did not realise until later that being in this mixed ward the beds are so close together and patients modesty was questionable!!!

Terry has now put his nurse’s uniform back in mothballs!!!!!! Patricia Smith

PRESIDENT’S LETTER MARCH 2015. Our AGM is on 12th of March and admittance is by production of a 2015 membership card and by the top door only. I am standing down as President so this will be my last letter to you all. During almost five years as President, the club has seen many changes. I would like to thank all of you for the help and support that I have received during this time and hope that you will give as much support to the incoming President and the committee. There are many varied and exciting things planned for the coming year so don’t forget to consult the magazine and website to keep up to date with the programme. So, a final goodbye, Doug

Are you an active member, the kind who would be missed,

Or are you just contented that your name is on the list?

Do you attend the meetings and mingle with the flock,

Or do you just stay away and criticise and knock?

Do you take an active part and help the work along,

Or are you satisfied to be the kind who’d rather just belong?

Do you ever work on committees to see there is no trick

Or leave the work to just a few and talk about the clique?

So come to the meetings often and help with hand and heart,

Don’t just be a member but take an active part.

Think this over carefully you know what’s right and wrong,

Are you an active member or do you just…belong?

THE I.C.E. CLUB PLAYER'S. As the older members of I.C.E. know the club has had a players group for many years and every year we try to put on light entertainment for the members to come and have a good night out for very little expense. This year we planned our dates well in advance to give what we hoped to be in the spring a comedy play ,and later in the year either a pantomime or something musical. My reason for writing this article is to ask for more interested members to contact me as we as a group need more acting and singing talent. This Springs production has had to be cancelled due to the lack of people to put even a play on for your entertainment ,and one of the biggest problems is for us to find new male talent so the plea is ‘GENTS PLEASE COME FORWARD AND TALK TO US. Just to put you in the picture I can only count on support of 4 men who are currently willing to go on stage and one of those is now over 80 years of age and would like only to do small parts .As well as acting all the players help build the sets including the ladies of course. We do enjoy the whole experi-ence of taking the words off the page and bringing to all who come to see us a great night of fun and laughter. Please remember this is your club and all of the players are members just like yourselves, yes it means giving up your time to rehearse and learning lines, but being on the stage makes all the effort worth-while and until you come and give it a try you may never know what great fun that can be. So please contact me any THURSDAY and have a chat otherwise without more members we wont be able to put on any new productions in the future .THINK ABOUT IT. Submitted by Richard Wood

Monthly Computer Tips – March 2015 Windows - Make notes quickly on your Desktop Windows lets you create sticky notes directly on your Desktop, which is handy if you want to quickly make a shopping list, a to-do list or simple reminders without opening a program. The easiest way to access Sticky Notes is to click the Start button and then type sticky notes in the search box (in Windows 8, type sticky notes while in the Modern tile interface). Click Sticky Notes to open it, then type your note. If you want to change the colour of the sticky note, right-click it then click a new colour from the bottom of the dropdown menu. You can make a note bigger by clicking its bottom-right corner and dragging it. To format the text, highlight it and click Ctrl+B to change the font to bold, Ctrl+U to underline it, Ctrl+I to italicise it, and Ctrl+T to strike it through with a line. Click the + symbol in the top-left corner to add a new note of the same colour or click the X sign in its top-right to delete

iOS - Type faster on your iPad There's a simple way to split your iPad's keyboard into two sections on either side of the screen to make it easier to type. To do this, hold any two letters on each end of the keyboard with your thumbs (for example D and K) and pull the keyboard apart. It will split into two so that you can easily type on it using both hands. If you want to revert to the original keyboard, hold two keys on opposite ends of the keyboard and push the keyboard back together. If you want to add an apostrophe quickly, long-press the ! key. If you want to add a quotation mark quickly, long-press the ? key. A Free App for Android and iOS If you like to listen to world news when you're driving or taking a walk, then download Newsbeat which narrates news stories to you. It lets you customise the news based on your areas of interest, publications and news organisations. In time, Newsbeat will tailor its stories to suit your needs. Remember the Computer Group meets at the Clubhouse on the third Friday of the month at 11.00am. No need to book – just turn up. We have WiFi broadband internet available, so why not bring your laptop / netbook / tablet etc along. If you have any questions or suggested topics for future please email us [email protected] or [email protected]

Windows Tip of the Month Ctrl + Y Will redo the last action after making a mistake

Scam of the Month – March 2015 Booking online: A common trick is to create a bogus website or email address, which on the surface looks like the real deal. People who unwittingly come across these phony sites or respond to these emails are lured into providing credit card details in the mistaken belief they are paying for a hotel, villa, an excursion or other service. The crooks pocket the money and may even attempt to empty the victim's bank account. It is always best to visit reputable or official websites independently, rather than respond to unsolicited emails or rely on search engine results, as crooks can very easily set up dummy addresses. Check the credentials of a site before you make a booking and look to see whether they belong to a re-nowned travel association or scheme, such as ABTA or ATOL.

Saturday 24th January - Welcome Back Party - Celebrate New Year The fact that tickets were soon sold out indicates how popular these type of events at the clubhouse have become. Those of us who managed to obtain tickets were not disappointed. Sue Potter, very much up to scratch, once again put together an informal and happy evening, music for dancing and supper. Meal beautifully cooked, and the music by Michael Anthony was charming. It proved to be a wonderful and well supported evening. We are all so lucky as club members to experi-ence such great events at the club. Submitted by Rosemary Ferguson

Saturday 14th February - Valentines Party We all arrived to see the club once again presented well thanks to the volunteers on the morning. Once drinks were obtained we were directed to our tables where we all enjoyed a three course meal excellently pre-pared by Marr and her team, and served by her waitress’s, all from del la Marr restaurant, Estepona Port. A great chance for our own catering teams to have a night off. Once the meal had finished we danced under the stars (literally even if the stars were directed electronically to the ceiling thanks to Christina’s projector!) Music was great, provided by the very bouncy Stella, oldies of our ‘youthish’ kept us all dancing and singing along. And then the trouble started: we were raided by the police after complaint about noise from next door. What a surprise the police must have had seeing all the active oldies. Good job it was not a drug raid, between us we may have had enough between us to fill a farmacia! Luckily the party was starting to wind up so no harm done. Thanks to Doug for the organising, and Mac and his bar team.

Last October Audrey and I won the I.C.E. Walking treasure hunt and received a voucher for

El Pikoteo, La Rada restaurant. We both decided that it would be rather nice to share our win-

nings with the organisers of the competition, Terry and Bob, but alas all our other halves in-

sisted they came with us! Unfortunately the restaurant closed for 3 weeks so we booked a

table for late November but fate had other ideas and Rob and I were poorly with the virus that

is still doing the rounds. By the time we were better it was getting too near Christmas so we

booked a day in January. Alas poor Pat was too ill to come but the rest of us thought we'd

better not let the restaurant down again so on a very wet Tuesday we had a rather lovely

lunch. Audrey was a bit disappointed they had no mango mousse as the mangoes weren't ripe

enough (we taught the waitress the word ripe). After lunch we decided as it was still very wet

we'd go to the nearest bar to have coffee and liqueurs. Two hours later with drinks bill costing

more than the lunch the weather had dried up and we could go home!!!!

We had a lovely afternoon so thank you to the Smiths and the Taylors for organising a really

good treasure hunt. If you haven't been to Pikoteo yet you should go as soon as possible, it's

the little cafe adjoining La Rada on the sea front. Submitted by Sue Potter

Sunday 3rd May - 6 day Holiday Trip to Galicia Day 1 - Costa del Sol to Galicia Our coach will be collecting us at the usual pick-up points along the Costa del Sol for our transfer to Malaga airport. We will check in for our direct flight to Santiago de Compostela. Once there, our coach will take us to 0 Grobe and our quaint family run Hotel Villa Jua-nita*** bed and breakfast. Free time for dinner. Hotel web site: http://www.villajuanita.com Day 2 - Boats, mussels, ribeiro wine and more. After enough time for a leisurely breakfast we take a walk in 0 Grebe and wind up in the port area. Here we board our boat and guide will tell us all about one of the main sources of income in the area: mussels and oysters. The boat will take us out to the farms in the "ria" and the expert crew will show us how this traditional way of life works. The best however is on the way back: we have the chance to sample the beautiful mussels and wash them down with the local Ribeiro wine: eat and drink as much as you like! Once off the boat, we take a stroll across the turn-of-the-century bridge for a visit to la Isla de la Toja, a very exclusive spa area with a lot of interesting facts about it. Free time for dinner. Day 3 - Vigo, Pontevedra and Combarro Today we set off south to Vigo, the biggest city in Galicia and one of the most important ports in Spain. Its location on the ria and its geographical features have made Vigo into what it is today: a hub lot the fishing industry. A walk around the centre of the city will be followed by some free time to sample some of the local delicacies. Our next stop is Pontevedra, the capital of the province, a city with a very nice atmosphere to it, a broad "alameda" and a lovely pedestrianised centre with great chances for coffees or drinks in the quaint little squares. Finally, on our way back to 0 Grobe, we stop at a small and very typical fishing village: Combarro. A walk though Combarro is a delightful experience, with its narrow winding streets, "horreos" in front of each house and the view of the sea down each little alleyway. Free time for dinner. Day 4 - Albarifio wine The most appreciated wine in the region is Albarino. This tasty wine is particular to this part of Galicia and goes very well with all the local foods. We will be visiting one of the local "bodegas" where they'll go through the history of this wine, its production and finally a taste of two of their favourites. I'm sure more than one will take some home! Once done here we continue to nearby Isla de Aruosa, one of the picturesque Galician islands in the ria, where we'll have free time for a walk and some lunch before we return to O Grobe. Day 5 - At leisure After some days of visits, we take a day at leisure in O Grobe. It's a lovely part of the world and walking along its streets and port is a relaxing experience. For those who would like more active alternative, our guide will provide you with suggestions. Day 6 - Santiago de Compostela and return After breakfast, we check out of Hotel Villa Juanita and say "adios" to O Grobe. We take a full day ex-cursion which will include an official guided tour in the cultural, religious and administrative capital of Galicia: Santiago de Compostela. This destination of pilgrims is a stunning city of granite, with a spec-tacular cathedral and a beautiful old quarter. After our guided tour, we'll have time for lunch in one of the local streets (e.g. Rua do Franco, albeit nothing to do with the dictator) and free time in the after-noon before we take our transfer back to Santiago airport. Our coach will also be waiting for us at Malaga airport to take us safely back home. Hasta la vista Danny!

Form 720 – What Next? By Terry Wayne, Partner, Blevins Franks In April 2013 residents of Spain had to start declaring their overseas assets on the new Modelo 720. What happens now? Does it impact your tax position? Are there consequences? Do you need to report again this year? Besides Form 720, taxes have been higher in Spain over recent years as part of austerity measures. However, it is not all doom and gloom. With specialist advice you can structure your financial affairs so that, legitimately, you pay the least amount of tax possible, and also so you need not be too concerned about Form 720. Your tax position If you have declared all your income and assets correctly on your annual tax returns, your tax position should not change following your submission of Form 720. However many taxpayers will find they pay more tax going forward, particularly if you declared assets for the first time, or incorrectly declared them previously. These assets will now be assessed for wealth tax, and any income for income tax. You can minimise taxes by placing funds into legitimate tax efficient vehicles that allow you to mitigate tax in Spain, sometimes significantly. 2015 declaration The next submission deadline is 31st March. In most cases, the values you report are those as at 31st December 2014. For bank accounts you also need to declare the average balance over the last three months of the year. In summary, if the value of your assets in a particular category amounts to over €50,000, you need to report all of them. The categories are: 1. Accounts with financial institutions (cash/deposit accounts) 2. Shares, life assurance policies, annuity income, income generated from loans etc. 3. Immovable property You are obliged to report assets if you are the owner, beneficiary, authorised signatory, or have the authority to dispose of the asset. This includes those held by trusts, companies or fiduciaries. If you submitted Form 720 in previous years, you only need to report again if the value of an asset grew by more than €20,000 (you need to take exchange rate movements into account if you have assets in Sterling or other foreign currency), or if you sold an asset or closed an account, or if you obtained a new asset. Information exchange It is clear that the Spanish government is keeping a close eye on offshore assets, both those declared on Form 720 and those which should have been included but were omitted. It already receives informa-tion from abroad, and this will increase over the coming years as global automatic exchange of informa-tion is introduced. With the new asset reporting rules, the penalties for non-disclosure can be devastating, so it is impor-tant to declare all your overseas assets according to the rules. Blevins Franks can provide specialist advice on effective tax efficient arrangements in Spain. Tax rates, scope and reliefs may change. Any statements concerning taxation are based upon our understanding of current taxation laws and practices which are subject to change. Tax information has been summarised; an individual is advised to seek personalised advice. To keep in touch with the latest developments in the offshore world, check out the latest news on our website www.blevinsfranks.com

'ICE Golf Society'. 'Away Day to La Cala Golf Resort' Our January 'Away Day' was to the three 18 hole golf resort of La Cala in Mijas. Sixteen players was a great turn out to take on the first and challenging Campo America. Unfortunately, due to heavy rain a day or so earlier, we had to keep the buggies to the paths which contributed to a very lengthy round of golf. The cold wind and the difficult underfoot conditions also lessened the days enjoyment. But we are made of hardy stuff and Jan took the honours with a fantastic 31 points. Martin was 2nd with 30 and in 3rd place was Ceon with 29. We will be playing the third La Cala course, Campo Asia, on the 24th June so get your names down early. 39€ each including shared buggy and a light breakfast. The Spring cup 2015 will be held on the 21st April at the fabulous Valle Romano Golf Resort, Este-pona. The green fee will be about 67€ including shared buggy. The final figure is dependant upon final numbers. Buggies will be permitted on the fairways, except par 3's, subject only to adverse weather conditions at the time. The entry form is on the club notice board so get your name down early. This golf course has been used for the European Tour 'Qualifying School' and is, therefore, maintained at a very high international standard. We will be playing off of the Blue Tees, (5392 meters), for the Gents and the Red Tees, (4935 meters), for the Ladies. This compares to The Estepona Golf Club, used for this years Autumn Cup: Blue 5380m and Red 5073m. For this, and future events, we will introduce a new prize for non-members. These guests must be in-vited by a member, will be subject to a two stroke cut in their Club/Federation handicap and, as in pre-vious competitions, cannot be awarded the trophies. Please ensure that your guests are aware of these conditions. The entry form will be on the club notice board before the end of the month so get your name down. The more there are the cheaper it will be! Casares Golf Club 'Roll-Up' We play a twice weekly 'Roll-Up' stableford competition on Tuesdays and Fridays at Casares Golf Club where our members benefit from discounted green fees. Tee off times vary a little throughout the year but if you are interested arrive around about 08.00. We often have 12 or more players and it's all very friendly, light hearted, (in other words 'cut throat')!! and open to all levels. A sense of humour is well worth putting in the bag! Our annual 'Order of Merit' trophy is awarded to the player with the best ten cards from these 'Roll-Ups'. Keep your eye on the club magazine and web site for details of all activities. If you would like to become involved, contribute or comment please contact me. Alan Davis 952 897 670, 699 712 804, [email protected]

BOWLING OUR WAY! We meet Monday mornings at Benavista Bowls Club no later than 10.00am for 10.15 start. Late arrivals cannot be guaranteed a game. We normally play 16 ends for just 8€ each includes cost of woods, following for just 1€ we play an optional end to win bot-tle of wine. Dress code is predominately white but the critical factor is footwear, shoes must be

smooth soled with no ’pimples or crinkles’. The Management at Benavista strictly apply this rule.

The Explanation: Brains of older people are slow because they know so much. People do not decline mentally with age, it just takes them longer to recall facts because they have more information in their brains, scientists believe. Much like a computer struggles as the hard drive gets full, so, too, do humans take longer to access information when their brains are full. Researchers say this slowing down process is not the same as cognitive decline. The human brain works slower in old age, said Dr. Michael Ramscar, but only because we have stored more information over time. The brains of older people do not get weak. On the contrary, they simply know more. Also, older people often go to another room to get something and when they get there, they stand there wondering what they came for. It is NOT a memory problem, it is nature's way of making older people do more exercise. SO THERE!!

Grey Nomading in Australia Continued, Diary of Louise and Grahams Travels. Many of the club members will have met Margaret and Vic’s daughter Louise and her husband Graham when they visited from Australia for the occasion of Margaret and Vic’s Golden Wedding Anniversary Celebrations. Lou and Graham are now taking a 2 year working tour, known as Grey Nomading in Aus-tralia, by caravan. "Grey Nomads:" many Aussie's travel around Australia when they retire. Melbourne: What a busy month. We looked after the cutest little dog in a lovely little house in Bruns-wick East, 15 minutes to Melbourne on the tram and just off Lygon St which is well known for being a street of fantastic restaurants. During our time here there were 2 murders, 2 arson attacks and a knifing – forgot what inner city living was like! Had a fantastic time, loads of shopping eating. Whilst in Melbourne we had do tour of the MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground and home to Aussie Rules Football similar to Lords in UK) and my mate Lisa gave us some complimentary tickets to a T20 Big Bash League game – it was fantastic and that is saying something because I hate cricket! Also went to the National sports museum and sporting Hall of Fame which we really enjoyed, especially the interactive sports hall – awe-some – had to have a go on everything! Had another catch up with our friends from the Grampians and had a good wander through the Victoria Markets in the city, and played with all the kids’ activities!!! Had a fantastic Christmas with my friend Lisa (hadn’t seen her since 2009) or her family (not seen since 2002). Very relaxed lots of food and laughter, really nice to catch up. Escaped inner city living and headed to a free camp next to Bass River in Poowong. Absolute bliss to be back in the country and the pups were loving being able to run around again. Next stop was also a free camp but next to a beach called Reeves Beach, which is 90 miles long – didn’t manage to walk it all but did have a great time with the dogs during the day. The night time was a different matter with massive thunder storms and lightning, not sure if dogs or I shook the most!! The storm continued all night and we were knackered in the morning and headed off to Sale in Victoria for a couple of nights at a caravan park. Really liked Sale and everyone was just so friendly. We had located a remote free camp at Lakes Entrance and were really looking forward to this bush camp. Upon arrival I hopped out to guide Graham into a secluded spot for the van. Within 10 seconds I was back in the car slapping away mosquitoes the size of elephants (well that may be a bit of an exag-geration!) Decided not to stay in the mozzie infested forest and headed into town to find a caravan park!!! Luckily I had two days to tend to my festering elephant size mozzie bites as it poured with rain and we were pretty much cabin bound! Headed inland to get away from the wind and storms the next day, heading through the Bega Valley (cheese country) and on to Candelo, a cute tiny little town where we were allowed to park around the footy oval. Free power and a whole footy field for the dogs to run around – Awesome. Next day was driving through the Great Dividing Range and another free stop with stunning views; the frogs kept us awake all night as they were soooo loud. Most unusual to drive through a town that is dedicated to skiing and snowboarding in Australia, just does not seem right!! Headed to the ACT (Australian Capital Territory) to shoot – oops I mean see the politicians. Graham applied for the Prime Minister’s Job as he reckons he couldn’t do a worse job than the current leader! >>Page 27

<< Page 26 Spent nearly a whole day at the Australian War Memorial which is a must see if you are ever in Canberra. Very sobering and emo-tional, but gives you a real sense of pride to be Australian, and question what is to come. The memorial walls just wrench your guts out, so many dead, so many heroes’, and so many teenagers.

Next day was dedicated to the National Museum in Canberra. There was a special exhibition called “Spirited”, all the uses of horses in Australia from the pioneers on-wards. It was a fantastic and informative exhibition that we both thoroughly enjoyed. Included in the exhibition was a horse show run by a 7th generation cattleman from the snowy ranges. His horses and working dogs where amazingly well trained and the show was very humorous as well as infor-mative. Absolutely stunning – and the horses were nice as well!!!! Goulburn next day to, which is Australia’s first inland city. Stunning old buildings and a whole day of shopping for me as Graham was feeling a bit under the weather. A couple of nights in a free camp and then off to Oberon, very close to the Blue Mountains, which are stunning. Still having a ball. Lou and Graham

Cowgirl in Tamworth I’ve got spurs on me cowboy boots and tassels on me............. shirt, we’re heading into Tamworth to boot scoot in the dirt. Got me old favourite denims on, and a pink 10 gallon hat, I must have shrunk those favourite jeans as my backside looks so fat. With rhinestones on me cowboy belt, and a lasso in my hand, gonna rope me a cowboy, well ain’t that just grand. I took me partner by the hand and flung him a bit too far; he flew over the line dancers, and crashed into the bar. I strummed on me guitar, and tried my country drawl, sounded like a dying cat and nearly caused a brawl. We’ve dosido’d and screamed yeeehah about a hundred times, but I’m running out of country words to make this ditty rhyme! It’s fun being a cowgirl, when they don’t know where you’re from, oh if only they knew, that I’m a wingging pom!!! Lou
