2015 DIRECTOR ELECTION

Calgary Co-op’s Director Election is on now until March 16, 2015. This year, our Board introduced a change to the election process. During the year prior to the election, the Board worked with a governance consultant to identify the skills and experience it needs going forward. The goal is strong and balanced leadership, with the right mix of skills, experience and attributes.

Our governance consultant developed priority criteria for the 2015 Director Election, including desired skills and experience. These were clearly identified in the Director Election Handbook which is distributed to all interested candidates.

After the nominations were received, the Board used an independent candidate assessment consultant to identify the candidates who can best fill the gaps. This year’s candidate assessment consultant is Caldwell Partners

When member-owners received their ballot along with their member refund cheque, they also received a brochure detailing the platform, education, and experience, for all candidates in the election. The candidates recommended by the candidate assessment consultant are clearly identified.

The Board believes that this transparent and unbiased approach will provide guidance to Calgary Co-op members without restricting choice because member-owners will be able to choose between all of the candidates on the ballot.

For more information on the Director Election, please visit www.calgarycoop.com/election.

COMMUNITYCOMMITMENTPARADISE HILL PLANTING

You know it’s officially spring, when you cut into the first, ripe Paradise Hill Farm tomato of the season.

Paradise Hill Farm tomatoes have become a staple in many households throughout the summer months, and the planting has become an annual tradition at Calgary Co-op.

Each year, our Produce team travels to the Legault family farm in Nanton to assist in planting the year’s crop of tomatoes. And this year was no exception. Our team rolled up their sleeves and got down to work on February 6, assisting in planting the entire crop of tomatoes. You’ll have the opportunity to enjoy the “fruit” of these labours in April when the first tomatoes will be exclusively delivered to Calgary Co-op stores.

We want to thank the Legault family for their warmth and hospitality during the planting and look forward to enjoying another summer with the best tomatoes around.

BLT SANDWICH

Fry bacon until golden brown; drain on paper towel to absorb excess fat.

Slice the tomatoes and toast your bread.

Skip the butter and spread fresh salsa on your toast before adding bacon slices, tomatoes, spinach and/or arugula.

ROASTED SALMONRoasting a fresh filet of salmon requires just 10 minutes per inch of thickness (most filets are around an inch thick, or slightly smaller) at 450˚F.

Line a rimmed baking sheet with foil, lay filets skin-side down (if they have skin) on the sheet and spread with option 1, 2 or 3.

Roast until the edges flake with a fork, but the fish is still moist in the middle. (If the fish flakes easily throughout, it’s overdone.)

BREAKFAST QUINOARinse as much quinoa as you want to cook in a fine sieve under running water.

Cook in a pot of boiling water, as you’d cook pasta, for 12-14 minutes.

Drain in the sieve and, if you want fluffy quinoa, dump it back into the empty pot, cover with a tea towel and leave it to steam for 5 minutes.

Serve with milk, brown sugar, fresh or dried fruit and nuts, just as you would serve oatmeal.
