Here it is March and I don’t know about y’all, but I am over this cold weather. It is time to see people on the beach and boats in the water. The club has endured the coldest weather that I can remember in years and boy did it test us! Thanks to Jay, Tim, and Louis for keeping us up and running.

Although February was a slow month, it was good for House operations. Super Bowl Sunday had a great crowd despite the uneventful game. Congratulations Seahawk fans! Thanks to all who entered chili in the 3rd annual GYC Chili Cook-Off. I think I was robbed, but congratulations to past Commodore Hage as 2014’s winner and first place prize recipient of $100. I received second place and third went to Randell Love.

Many thanks to all for a memorable Valentine’s night; the staff served 246 members. It was a great Friday night with great food, entertainment, and camaraderie. Club usage continues to increase and the Sunday after Valen-tine’s Day we served 175 members. It was a good weekend for the GYC.

I hope everyone has taken advantage of the new daily Happy Hour, available seven days a week from

5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. To better serve our members, the House Committee has established operating hours for the club. This is to let members know the exact times we will be open.

Things to look forward to in March are: Party Hardy Mardi Gras Party, Alfonso Sutter Cup, St. Patrick’s Day brunch, and we get to “Spring Forward” on the 9th.

Again, I remind everyone of our membership drive. For the first 50 new members the initiation fee will be $500, and for the next 50 the initiation fee will be $1000. Please invite your friends, relatives, and co-workers down to the club and show off what we have to offer.

I would like to thank everyone for their participation in several events we had at the club in February. The Super Bowl 3rd Annual Chili Cook-Off was a foggy evening. However, it did not stop the diehard football fans coming to the club. Congratulations to Louis Bell for winning the flat screen television, and to Laurence Hage for winning the Chili Cook-Off. Thanks to the Junior Activities Committee for organizing the kid’s events on the 3rd floor. Love was definitely in the air for our Friday Night Valentine’s Dinner. We managed to serve over 245 members for din-ner as well as the massive crowd around the bar. The live entertainment by David Jones set the perfect ambiance for the evening. What a great night! It brought back memories of the Club of the past.

By now I am sure you have had a chance to enjoy our Happy Hour bar specials. We have half price drink specials for domestic beer, house wine, and well liquor EVERYDAY from 5:30pm to 6:30pm. Trust me, these are the best prices in town! Speaking of best prices, if you have not experienced our Saturday morning Breakfast Service you are definitely missing out. You can get the ‘Burgee’, which is an egg, sausage, bacon or ham steak, hash browns, grits and a biscuit or toast for only $6.00. Or you can create your own omelet for $8.00. We also have a kid’s menu for 12 years and under offering pigs in a blanket, French toast, or kid’s omelet all for under $5.00. Hope to see you on Saturday mornings from 8:00am to 11:00am.

Lastly, mark your calendars for the following events at GYC: Mardi Gras Party, March 1st after the downtown Gulfport Parade; St. Pat-rick’s Day Celebration Sunday Brunch, March 16th, 11:00am -2:00pm; Asian Night, Wednesday, April 2nd; High School Sailing Foundation, Saturday, April 12; Crawfish Boil, Saturday, April 19th; and Easter Brunch, Sunday April 20th.

After socializing with a glass of wine, the ladies enjoyed a delicious meal prepared by our own Chef Jason. A spe-cial thank you needs to be extended by all to our hostesses for a great presentation. They were Maybelle Dukes, Margaret Blount and Ann Mathers.

Ms. Kathryn Taylor Gray of Nooboo Designs presented us with an interesting program showcasing her hand craft-ed jewelry. It is currently available in several shops locally, in addition to being available online. Kathryn was also gracious enough to provide us with two of our door prizes.

Our March program will be “Spruce up for Spring” with our featured guest speaker Charles Wambolt RN, PT, LMT and Life Coach. Mr. Wambolt will enlighten us on the fact that our bodies need a wakeup call.

Bridge winner was Dean Hunter with Elaine Schmidtling following a close second.

More members are encouraged to join the Wednesday morning bridge gathering which is open to all players.

Volunteers are needed to sell ads for the new year books being compiled at this time. You are encouraged to let JoEllen know of any changes in your status so that we can compile an accurate book of information. If you are aware of anyone who would like to advertise in the new book, please pass this information along to us.

March hostesses will be Nancy Wheeler, JoAnn Van Atta, Dottie Long, and Sandy Morrison. As a reminder, please call JoEllen on the Monday before our meeting if you plan to attend and are not on the permanent list. Additional-ly, if you would like to be on the permanent list, please call JoEllen to sign up. This information is needed in order for the kitchen staff to prepare accordingly.

Just as a further reminder, the next meeting of the Ladies Auxiliary will be March 19th at 11:30 am. I look forward to seeing you all there. Lynn Ward Borders
