Over 70 members attended

Westin Resort & Spa over the
dates of January 19-24, 2014.
The weather was perfect for
UCA Members, providing a
week of 80 degrees and sunshine!
To begin the week, Illinois
State Senator, Martin Sandoval
(Chairman of the Senate Trans-
portation Committee) gave eve-
ryone a warm welcome at the
Welcome Reception on Sunday.
Monday morning featured
presentations from Chris Getty
(Mayor of the Village of Lyons)
regarding the State Revolving
Fund as well as Greg Wilcox
(Winston Engineering) & Brian
Mihelich (True North Consult-
ants) who spoke about new
CCDD regulations.
On Wednesday morning, Jim
Weber (Assurance Agency) in-
formed members about the surety
market and O’Brien Mills
(Aldridge Electric) educated con-
vention attendee’s of OSHA Do’s
& Don’ts.
Presentations were exception-
ally informative & members
walked away with a lot of benefi-
cial information.
Other highlights included a
beach bash where guests danced
the night away and the Presi-
dent’s Dinner which was com-
plete with a Cirque de Soleil
show.
Thank you to those who par-
ticipated in the convention as

President’s Editorial
It has been a cold and snow
filled 2014 so far. The con-
vention in Puerto Vallarta,
Mexico offered relief to the
attendees. The weather was
perfect with nothing but sun-
shine and warm weather.
Unfortunately Sue and I
could not attend at the last
minute. Thanks to Mike and
Patty Stark for filling in for
us. It was their first conven-
tion but won’t be their last.
A special thanks to the par-
ticipants, speakers and spon-
sors for making it a special
week.
A convention, like any other
event, is made possible with
the behind the scenes work
of the committee and staff. I
would like to recognize Lau-
ren Fosmoen (UCA Events
& Marketing Coordinator),
Jeff Delia, Convention
Chairman (National Con-
crete Pipe Co.), Brian
Klimes (FOCIS Promotions
and Incentives) and Kristi
Bloom (Bluff City Materi-
als) for the many hours of
hard work put forth. Mary
Woods (UCA Website Coor-
dinator) took many wonder-
ful pictures to document the
camaraderie and the beauty
of the surroundings.
January 2015 convention
is in Kauai, Hawaii. It is
not too early to start think-
ing about attending. I hear
that Mike Wiedmaier and
Brian Klimes already have
the flights booked for their
families. Yes I said families,
children are welcome to at-
tend. Details will be availa-
ble soon.
Please sign up to participate
in or attend the Spring
Showcase on April 15th.
Send your “key” employees
to network with public offi-
cials, general contractors,
engineers and associate
member firms. Don’t pass
up this great opportunity.
The membership committee
is working hard to invite
companies to become a part
of the UCA team. Do your
part by identifying and in-
forming others of UCA. Tell
them to join & take ad-
vantage of what we have to
offer. I am pleased to wel-
come our newest member
firms; True North Consult-
ants, Inc., The Pipco Compa-
nies LTD and Eichhorn &
Eichhorn, LLP.
Stay involved and I wish you
the best as the spring con-
struction season begins.
Sincerely,
Thomas Rakow
