Hi everyone,

Does “care.data” (as in care dot data) mean anything to you? It didn’t to me until I read Nick Ferrari’s (Sunday Ex-press) article recently.

Earlier this year, NHS England sent out a leaflet to all homes stating their intention to store all our medical information on a central data base to “improve care by identifying areas with long waiting times, inadequate services or substandard treat-ment”.

On the face of it this seems like a sensible thing to do, until it is further explained that the data will be “up for sale” to pretty much any organisation willing to pay for it. NHSE has given assurances that the data will be treated in a confidential and secure manner. The problem they have here is, once the data has left GP surger-ies who knows what levels of security will be applied.

This was going to take place on February 28th 2014. Nick Ferrari picked it up as it was just about to slide under the radar and it now has a six month extension period to allow people to ‘opt out’ if they wish. http://medconfidential.org has more information and an opt out form, or you can check with your surgery website as some surgeries have placed a notice page with helpful information. NHSE say you can opt in and out as you choose but again, the problem here is, if your data is on the database and sold to a third party and you then decide to opt out, the data that has been sold will not be recalled and may end up being sold on again and again. Certainly food for thought. Stay safe everyone
