This is also the last of the author’s occult novels, and much of its content was accepted as fact by prominent members of the occult community. It is notable forincluding predictions that atomic power will be used for military applications.

Interestingly, the popularity of this novel had a significant impact on the sales of Samuel Butler’s Erewhon, a satirical utopia also published anonymously just one year later - many believed it to be a sequel to The Coming Race. Bleiler 298. Negley 716. Sargent p. 59.

36. [Political] A Freeholder [Pulteney, William]An Humble Address to the Knights, Citizens, and Burgesses, Elected to Represent theCommons of Great Britain in the Ensuing Parliament.London: H. Haines, 1734. 36 pp. A^2-E. Sewn binding. Printed on laid paper, withwatermark visible on two leaves. Two other works published by H. Haines advertised onfinal leaf.

An impassioned polemic against political corruption, offered as a plea to newly electedofficials in the British government to resist this corruption and properly represent theelectorate. Though the verbiage is old-fashioned, the themes are timeless. ‘A Freeholder’ is now known to be William Pulteney, who served a lengthy term in Parliament, along with several other positions. In 1742 hebecame the first Earl of Bath under King George II. He was well-known as an outspoken critic of corruption, and formed the Patriot Whigs in reaction to corruption, particularly that of Robert Walpole (the Earl ofOxford, who is generally considered the first Prime Minister of Great Britain).

An excerpt: “If Luxury, if Pleasure can make you sacrifice your Morals to your Appetites; if the childish Pomp of Strings and empty Names can flatter your Imaginations; they will all be employ’d to draw you off from the honest Bent of your natural Disposition. But if the Candour of your yet-untainted Minds should reject these Allurements with Disdain; then a more artful Attempt will be made upon you; then you will be told that this Horror of Corruption, this Spartan and Roman Virtue, is the Effect of your Ignorance of the World, and a Speculation only fit for School-boys...” This excerpt, especially the reference to arguments that corruption is a necessary evil in business and government, seems to be a direct reaction to writings published by Walpole’s allies, whom he paid for their support.

Very good. Lightly rubbed & soiled, final leaf smudged which obscures text slightly in middle of page (though not enough that it cannot be read).
