“Eachsuccessfuleventmovesusforward–forwardintermsofawarenessthroughoutthecommunity,andforwardintermsofthelocalequityneededtokeepusprogressingtowardstheSociety’sgoalofbuildingandoperatingaffordablerentalhousingforseniors,”explainsEileen.

“Weleavenostoneunturnedinoureffortstospreadtheword,andthusdemonstratetoourcommunity,tofuturedonorsandtofuturemortgageprovidersthatwearehere;thisisreal;wearehappening!”continuesDick.

AquicklookattheSociety’swebsite,www.bshs.ca,showstheeightyearprogressionfromitsinitiationbytheBowserLegion,toincorporationasaseparateSociety,tosuccessfulapplicationforcharitablestatus,thusenablingtheSocietytoissuetaxreceiptsfordonations.“We,andthecommunity,areindebtedtoalltheDirectorswhocamebeforeus,especiallytoElizabethHieronymiandSallyBarton,whogotustothepointwherewecouldbegintoactuallyfundraise,”saysCarol.“Thesite,onatreed,ten-acrepieceofCrownLandbehindMagnoliaCourt,isabeautifulpieceofproperty.It’sperfectforthevillageasawhole,andisineasywalkingdistancetogroceries,theCreditUnion,Legion,Libraryandotheramenities.”

“AffordableSeniorHousingatthatlocationisanotherpieceinthepuzzle,”saysDick,“anotherwaytokeepourcommunityvibrantandwhole,andattractmorepieces,suchaslocallyavailablemedicalanddentalservices.”

Sowhatliesbetweenthegroundandtheshovel?Money,thusthemoneythermometeroutsideofBowserWoodworkingandtheSociety’semphasisonfundraising.“OneofourmostexcitingventuresistheBuy A Brickprogram,”explainsEileen.“ItwasthebrainchildofBowserBuilders’MacSnobelen,andestablishedsothatbusinesses,families,orgroupsoffriendscouldcontributeandbeacknowledged.Eachbrickmetaphoricallyrepresents$1,000,andwilleventuallybepartofacentralpatioonthesite.”

Noteverywayofinvolvingthecommunityinvolvesmoney.“Werecentlyhada‘NametheHousingProject’contestatBowserElementarySchool.Wehadsomefunnamestochoosefrom,including‘TheBodaciousEagleRetirementHome.’Wesettledon‘LighthouseVilla.’”

Itistooearlyintheprocesstobelookingat“carvedinstone”designsortobeansweringtheoft-timescontentiousquestionofwhat“affordable”means.WhateverthatdollaramountturnsouttobewilldependupontheeconomicsofourlocalareaandhowmuchlocalequitytheSocietycanraisetolowerthefuturemortgage.“It’satransitionformofhousing,analternativetohavingtomoveawayfromthecommunitythathassustainedone

andwhereone’slife-givingtiesaresituated.There’snomagicbullet,noone-sizefitsall,”saysDick.PhaseOneisprojectedtobeattachedone-bedroompatiohomesforrent,eachwithkitchenfacilities,anexteriordoorandaninnercorridorconnectingtheunits.PhaseTwowillfollowanassisted-livingmodel,thuskeepingtotheSociety’soriginalvision,withatotalof36unitsinall.

TheSociety’ssuccessthusfarisnotonlyatestamenttopreviousvolunteers,buttotheeffectivebalanceamongsttheskillsofthecurrentmostactiveboardmembers.Theyarenostrangerstothepowerofwhatacommunity,workingtogether,yetflingingawideandcreativenet,canaccomplish.EileenBeadlecameherefromNorthVancouvernearlyfouryearsago.“IsawanoticeattheBowserPostOfficethattherewasanopportunitytobecomeinvolvedinthiscommunityproject.IcertainlygetmoreoutofvolunteeringthanIcanpossiblygive.”

“We’reallproject-oriented,”saysDick.“Whenbuilt,thiswillbealegacyinthecommunity.”

Carol(neeGwilt)wasbornandraisedinBowser.“Thisisanopportunitytocreatesomethingmyparentscouldn’tsharein,andtorecognizeallthepioneersthathadtoleavewhentheworkontheirpropertiesortheirhealthcareneedsbecametoomuchforthem.”

TerryKingandWendaBreitkreutzcompletethecurrentcomplementofDirectorswho,alongwithalltheCommitteemembers,embodytheenthusiasmandcommitmentrequiredtocontinuemovingforward.

“WithoursuccessfuleventsandtheBuy a Brickprogram,awarenessoftheSociety’sgoalsandtheneedsofourarea’sseniorsisonpeople’sradar.Thecommunitycanhavesomeskininthegame,”saysEileen.

“It’sallaboutthebeliefthatit’sgoingtohappen,”addsCarol,“becauseitis!”

I’veavoidedthesubjectforyears.Talkingaboutdeathischallengingforme,asitmightbeforyou.Thetopicisoftenfraughtwithintenseemotionanddeepsadness,buthavingtheinformationathandisacomfortingthought,andfrankly,it’sinformationweshouldallhaveinourbackpocket.Rightthereandhandywhenweneedit.

BevandPauloriginallyestablishedtheirfuneralbusinessonBeachAvenuein2010,butquicklyrealizedthatthelocationwastoosmallanddidn’tfittheirvisionfortheCentre.WhenalargerpropertyonFernRoadbecameavailable,therewasnohesitationaboutmoving.

“VancouverIslandneedstheservicesthatweoffer,andbeingcentrallylocatedinQualicumBeachisideal.OurclientsarefromalloverVancouverIsland,eventheNorthIslandcommunities,anditmakesperfectsenseforustobehere,”saysPaul.

TuckedawaybehindPharmasaveandadjacenttoaparkinglot,theCentreisnotyourusualfuneralhome.Itsrathernon-descriptbuildingisonlydistinguishedbyabusinesssignoutfrontandaclassywhiteSUVusedforfuneralservicesparkedofftotheside.Thecasualatmosphereiswelcoming,ratherthanaustereandintimidating.

services,andburialaswellascremationarrangements.TheprocessstartswithasimpleconversationattheCentre,orahomevisitcanbearrangedifneeded.

“Wemakeitpersonal,”saysPaul.“Ifrequired,we’llvisitourclientsattheirhomewherethey’remorecomfortableduringtheirgrieving.”

OneofPaulandBev’scustomserviceswasheldrecentlyattheQualicumBeachCemeterysituatedonJonesAvenue.WithThe Lion Sleeps Tonight playinginthebackground,BevinitiatedaspecialtributetotheirMother–onefinaldancetothemusicsheloved.Theirmotherwasadancerandsurelysmileddownonthemastheyjoinedhandsanddancedtothemusic.(Inanoddcoincidence,andonlyhoursafterBevrelatedthistouchingstorytome,Ihearditagain.Thewoman’ssonisapersonalfriendwhowasdelightedbyBev’sheartfeltsuggestionandwillalwaysremembertheuniqueexperience.)

“Wespendalotoftimewithourclients.Asmuchtimeastheyneed.Webelievethisindustryisallaboutcustomerservice.Wewantpeopletofeelcomforted...wewanttoeasethestresstheymaybefeeling,”saysBev.

Chooseabasicfuneralservice,orsomethingmoreelaborate.Agatheringforveryfew,oralargerreceptionatalocalhall.AreallyuniquechoiceforcremationashesisanOceanMemorialReef–youreternalrestingplacewillultimatelyprovideahomeformarinelifeasitbecomespartofthenaturalecosystem.“Thisisyourtime.Thisisaboutyou,andyourlovedone.Youtellmewhatyou’dlikeandneed,andwe’llcarryoutyourwishes,”Bevtellsme.

Ifyouthinkfuneralservicesareexpensive,theydefinitelycanbe.Arrangements,servicesandfunerarymerchandisecanrunintothethousands,butyoucanalsochooseabasiccremationataneconomical$1,893,thelowestpriceofferedonVancouverIsland.

Ifmoney’stight,keepinmindthatalthoughtherewillbeaninitialoutlay,aDeathBenefitmightbeavailableifthedeceasedcontributedtotheCanadaPensionPlan(CPP)duringhisorherlifetime.Theaveragedeathbenefitpaidin2013was$2,280.52.Notmuch,butitwillhelptodefraysomeofthecost.

With a pocket now stuffed with information, I feel reassured and confident about making a choice. I may even opt for a Pre-arranged Plan like my grandparents did decades ago. Their thoughtful choice at that time made their funeral arrangements extremely easy when they passed on. I didn’t have to worry about a thing, everything was already arranged. Qualicum Beach Funeral offers similar pre-arranged plans.

Let’sfaceit,nomatterthedifferentjourneyswe’veindividuallytakenthroughoutourlives,thefactthatwe’lleventuallyleavethisworldisinevitable.Somedaywe’llallneedtheservicesofaFuneralDirectorandit’snicetoknowtherearecaringpeoplelikePaulandBevwhowilltakecareofthefinalarrangementswhenitbecomesnecessary.~

Justoverayearago(onFebruary7,2013,tobeprecise)wehadthepleasureofwelcomingMichaelandElsSchutte,artistsandmusicianswhoimmigratedherefromTheNetherlandsafterfallinginlovewithVancouverIslandonpaintingholidays.“It’saveryniceplacewithlotsofspace,freshairandverynice,friendlypeople,”gushesMichael,withaccuracyandasmile.“Andwemadesomeverygoodfriendsbeforewemovedhere,sotheyhavehelpedusandbeenverysupportive.Suchverysweetpeople!”

TheSchuttescamehereallthewayfromEgmondaanZee,asmallcoastalvillagearound30kmnorthwestofAmsterdam,historicallyknownforartists’coloniesandasapopularvacationspot.NowsettledinFrenchCreek,theyarereallygoingforitintheireffortstoestablishtheirnamesinthelocalartsscene.“Weareworkingveryhard,

Whilejustasimpressive,Els’artisextremelydifferenttoherhusband’swork,yetinsomewaysaswideranging.AsElswasfeelingundertheweatheruponmyvisitwehadonlyacoupleminutestochat,eventhenatdistanceacrossthestudiolestshepassonherflutome!ButIdidgettoseesomeofherlovelycreations,includingaparliamentof3D‘owlnurse’GetWellSooncards(whichapparentlytakejusthalfanhoureachtomake),andsomestrikingstatuettesofAfricantribalwomen.SinceshewasveryyoungEls’talentshaveshoneinthecraftsareaofartisticcreation,especiallywithpaper,afieldinwhichsheissoskilledthatshehaswonawardsandhadherworkfeaturedinmanydedicatedpublications.AtPracticumArtandMusicsheholdsweeklyclassesinscrapbookingandhowtomakegreetingscards,butwillalsohappilytakecommissions.

TheothersideoftheSchuttes’worldismusic.Formanyyearsthecouplehasperformedtogether,specializingineasy-on-the-ear50s,60sand70sclassicsandcountrycoverversions.TheirlatestandfifthCD,‘ByMySide,’featurestheirrenditionsofsuchasEagles’‘TequilaSunrise,’PatsyCline’s‘WalkingAfterMidnight’andLynnAnderson’s‘RoseGarden’alongsideaclutchoforiginals.It’saverypolishedsound,butthenwithahi-techhomestudiosetupandstoriedmusicalhistorylikeMichael’sthisshouldcomeasnogreatsurprise.

Backinhighschool,MichaelfoundedabanddestinedtoultimatelybecomeoneofthemostfamousofallDutchpopoutfits:TheNits.Showingmethehandwrittensetlistfromtheband’sfirsteverperformance,hesays:“AswellasplayingcoverswewroteourownsongsandwewerepickedupbyabroadcastingcompanycalledAVRO(fortheDutchmeaningof‘GeneralAssociationofRadioBroadcasting’).Theystarted

playingoursongswhichwasridiculousluckbecausewewerejust12-and13-year-oldboys!Fromtherewebecamemoreandmoreprofessional.ThebandhasexistedforoverfortyyearsandisstillgoingonwithmyfriendsHenkHofstede,RobKloetandothers,stillplayingintheatres.ThenameTheNitswasananswertoTheBeatles…anitchyinsecttotheirbeetle!”

(AtthisjunctureitisimportanttonoteanamazingcoincidenceconnectedtothisstoryviamyotherworkinaNanaimomusicstore.OnthedayafterIreceivedtheassignmenttopenthisprofileofthelovelySchuttes,aregularcustomerfromGabriolaIslandcameintoaskifwehadanyCDsbyTheNits!“Wow!”Ithought,relatingthecoincidencetotheequallystunnedcustomer.Hewaslookingfortwotitlesinparticular:‘IntheDutchMountains’and‘Urk,’whichIconsequentlyobtainedforhimfromaMontrealdistributor.Truestory!)

“AftermyperiodinTheNitsIwasinRobertStanleyandtheVIPS,”continuesMichael.“Itwasaverycommercialband,likeKCandtheSunshineBand,withfancysuitsandcrazyboots.WewereluckyenoughtohaveahitinAustriaandGermany,andinViennawemetABBA,whichwasreallywonderful.Wewereinthesamehotelandthesametelevisionshow,butatthattimenobodyknewthattheywouldbecomesohuge!”

ThenextmusicalprojectforMichaelwasTheHollandQuartet,anotedjazzoutfitthatattainedafairamountofdomesticsuccess,bothintheirownrightandasthebackingbandfortouringsingers.Buttheroadcannotgoonforever,soMichaelhadaneyeonthefuture.“AsaprofessionalmusicianIplayedgigsalmosteveryday,anditwasaverynicelife,butyouareawayallthetime,ontheroad.WhenIwashomeIstartedtobuildupmymusicandpaintingstudios,toteachpeoplemusicandart,andhavenowdonethisprofessionallyformorethantwenty-fiveyears.”

WhiletheprinciplesbehindPassiveHousehavetheiroriginsinafewNorthAmericanhomesbuiltinthe1970’s,thestandardwasfoundedinGermanyin1996asPassivhaus(literallytranslatedaspassivebuilding).KnowninNorthAmericaasPassiveHouse,thestandardPHisreallyeasytograsp.APHisabuildingthat’ssuper-insulated,practicallyairtight,largelyheatedbysolargainandinternalheatgains(occupants,appliances&lights),suppliedwithcontinuousfreshair,includesstateoftheartwindowsanddoors,andisthermalbridgefree.TheownerofaPassiveHousecanexpectuptoa90%reductioninannualheatandcoolingcostsanda75%reductionintotalannualenergydemandfromthatofacodebuilthome.Thisequatestoheatingandcoolinga1600squarefoothomewiththeequivalentofahairdryer.

Circumambulationisanancientpractice. Itmeanstowalkaroundsomething,usuallywithreverenceandrespect.

Weallknowwhatit’sliketowanderaroundincircles,gettingnowhere. It’softenalessthanpleasantexperience-especiallywhenwe’velostsomethingimportant,likeourkeys…orourminds. Circumambulationresembles“goingnowhere”buthasatotallydifferentintentionandoutcome.

WhenIstartedthinkingabouttheconceptofcircumambulationaboutamonthago,Ididwhatwealldowhenanideaentersourfield. Istartedcirclingaroundit,wonderingwhyitwasthere. FirstIhadtolookthewordupinthedictionarytoseehowtospellit. ItturnsoutIhadbeenpronouncingitwrong,everyoneofthe10timesthatIhadspokenthewordbefore.

Formalcircumambulationisanancientpractice.AttheTibetanBuddhisttempleinCoombs,oneisencouragedtocircumambulatethetemplethreetimesbeforeentering. Circumambulatingisawaytoshowhonororrespectandtocenteroneself. Itisalsoawaytofindthingswehavelostornotyetfound.

Thinkaboutit. Whatdowedowhenwe’velostsomething? Wewanderaroundincircles,visitingtheplaceswhere“it”mightbe,thenreturningtotheplacewehavejustbeen,onlytoreturnyetagain,with

renewedhopesthatmaybethistimethemissingthingwillactuallybethere.

deeperconcernsdon’thavesingleanswers. Whatgoodisfindingthekeyifwe’velostthewholeroom? 

Circumambulationispartphysicalandpartinvisible. Itgivesourfeetsomethingtodoandoureyessomethingtosee,sowecanfocusonwhatwedonotknowbutwanttogetclosetoortounderstand. Whenyouarewalkingthemorningloopwiththedogsorheadingforthecoffeeshop,wearen’tjustwalkingaforestorcitypath,we’recircumambulatingsomething. Whatarewewalkingaround? What’satthecenter? Atourcenter?

Thedifferencebetweenaimlesslywanderingincirclesandcircumambulatingisattention,intentionandmindfulness. Withcircumambulation,wewalkincirclesaroundasolutionorideal–forgoodreason! 

Circumambulationismostoftendonearoundamystery.Bydefinitionwedon’tknowtheunknown,butthatisnoreasontoignoreit. Wecanalwayswalkaroundit. Wedon’twanttogetlostwalkingincirclesforever,butwalkingincirclesaroundatreasureisfarbetterthanwalkingawayfromit. Howelsecanwefindsomethingwhenwedon’tknowwhatwe’relookingfor?
