Sacandaga Task Force for Senior Living Awarded

Grant for Volunteer Medical Transportation

The Sacandaga Task Force for Senior Living (STFSL) was recently awarded a grant by the Charles Wood Foundation to underwrite costs associated with the Task Force’s Volunteer Medical Transportation Network. The grant funds will be used to purchase an umbrella insurance policy for volunteer drivers and will also allow the program to provide partial mileage reimbursement for the volunteers. One of the missions of the Charles R. Wood Foundation is funding local Healthcare initiatives and projects. James Conkling, President of STFSL, underscored the importance of the volunteer transportation program with his comment, “The best medical care in the world is no good if you can’t get to it!” The program serves seniors in Northville, Edinburg, Hope and Mayfield with plans to expand to additional areas around the Sacandaga. Seniors Continued Next Page

are transported to medical appointments throughout Fulton, Montgomery, Schenectady, Saratoga, and Albany Counties as well as Glens Falls. The program is not intended to duplicate services available from other sources, such as area Offices for Aging, or Veterans Affairs. Volunteers are eligible for reimbursement from Medicaid in some instances. In addition, the program accepts donations from transportation recipients but does not require them. Seniors in the Sacandaga Region often must travel lengthy distances for medical services. Specialty services are anywhere from 40 to 60 miles away and even basic services such as dentistry or routine primary care may entail a round trip of 30 miles or more. Many seniors no longer drive; those that do prefer to stay on local roads. Some have family members who are willing to help, but may find themselves jeopardizing their jobs by constantly needing time off. Others have no family members and ultimately may not get the medical care they need. Seniors in need of transportation to medical appointments are asked to call the STFSL phone number752-8737 at least a week before their

appointment and leave a message. They will be contacted by the volunteer dispatcher who will locate an available volunteer and arrange for the volunteer to speak directly with the senior to make needed arrangements. Recently a woman who needed vital surgery in Albany was about to refuse the surgery because she did not have transportation for the procedure and the multiple follow up visits. The STFLS volunteer driver not only took her for her surgery and all of her follow up appointments, but also stayed overnight with family in Albany so she could be on the spot early on the morning of the senior’s discharge! STFSL’s Volunteer Medical Transportation Program is constantly seeking additional volunteer drivers as well as making its service known to area residents. Edinburg Historical Society Mark Twain once said, “In the Spring, I have counted 136 different kinds of weather inside of 24 hours.” And if Mark Twain ever lived in the Sacandaga Valley he could have counted even more! It’s nice to know that even when so many parts of life are unpredictable, there are a few aspects that remain consistent. In this spirit, the Edinburg Historical Society is proud to announce the new 2014 season. Programs for this season include author Mary Shartle who has written an exciting new book that she will share with us this spring. Historian, Ed Dandaraw, who will share his story of the reclamation of the abandoned cemeteries in the neighboring town of Providence. And acclaimed folk musician Dan Berggren will share folk music of the Adirondacks with us this fall. We will once again be delighted to have our annual House Stories program where members from the Edinburg Historical Society share stories of their own homes. And we will also have the pleasure of bestowning the Nellie Tyrrell Award to a deserving fourth grade student of Edinburg Common School who has shown the most interest and improvement in local history this year.

Please join us for our first organizational meeting of the season on March 18th at 7 PM at the Edinburg Community Center. Programs will follow a brief business meeting starting in April. Treats to follow. And don’t forget to mark your calendars! The museum season officially starts June 28th. New exhibits, old favorites, and so much fun! We also remain committed to preserving Edinburg’s rich heritage and are continuing our restoration efforts at the Carriage Shop which is part of the Copeland Historic Site. We hope our community and visitors will continue to support our fund raising efforts by purchasing a share/ shares for the Copeland Historic Site restoration project. Shares ($25 per share) can be purchased for yourself, a family member, as a gift or in memory of a loved one. Send your request to our Society at PO Box 801, Northville, NY 12134. Upon receipt of your request, a certificate will be sent to the named shareholder, with the shareholder names posted inside the Copeland Covered Bridge. We are so honored to be able to share our 2014 season with you. Hope to see you there, crazy weather and all! Maria Spaeth-Pres., Marilyn Sargent-V.P., Marge Ludwig-Treasurer, Gail Collins-Secretary

Saratoga County was formed from Albany County in 1791. Prior to 1700 the entire area was called by the Native American name, Saraghtoga. I’ve come across a few different names for this word. One “hill-side country of the great river”, another “place of the swift water” and yet another “a place where the track of the heel may be seen”. The last one being an allusion to where depressions like footprints were seen in the nearby rock formations. Being the favorite hunting and fishing grounds for several generations of the Iroquois Nation of Native Americans, especially the Mohawk tribe, an imaginary line drawn from Glens Falls on the Hudson to Amsterdam on the Mohawk comprised this territory that was crisscrossed with trails in all directions. The primary stream was the Kayaderosseras-another Native American name- which is totally within the county boundaries. The most important lakes were Saratoga, Ballston, Round and Lake Desolation. The Palmertown or Luzerne mountains start rising on North Broadway, Saratoga Springs. The highest peak is Mt. McGregor in the town of Wilton. The Kayaderosseras range runs through the northern part of the county occupying the greatest part of Corinth, Day, Edinburgh and Hadley. These are all part of the Adirondacks, which are a section of the Laurentian chain and some of the oldest mountains in the world. The county’s interior has a natural valley with the foothills of the Green Mountains of Vermont

on one side and the Adirondacks on the other. The easiest route in this valley ran north and south to the Mohawk valley. This route was used by the early explorers, Native Americans, fur traders, armies and settlers. Wild game was plentiful and much fur trading was carried on along the county’s southern boundaries. The Native Americans used the mineral springs for medicine and it was believed that the game animal’s outstanding fur qualities came from drinking water at the saline springs. The territory of the mineral springs was also known as Kayaderosseras. During the Colonial period of our country -1600’s-the king of England directed his representatives to purchase land from the Native Americans. These purchases became known as land grants or patents. Two of the earliest and best known patents in the present county were Saratoga and Kayaderossera. The Saratoga Patent was purchased from the Mohawks in 1684 but because the colonial government would not confirm the Native American deed, a warrant for the patent was not issued until 1708. The Kayaderossera was the most important and largest land grant made in colonial times. It was founded on the old Native American hunting grounds of Kayaderossera. It includes the largest part of Saratoga County; running north into Warren County and on the west into Montgomery and Fulton Counties. The first attempt to purchase Kayaderossera was made in 1693 by prominent Albany business men Robert Livingston Jr. and David Schuyler. However, the first Native American deed was not granted until 1702. When the owners of the entire patent received their land titles, Livingston and Schuyler signed a release turning over their interests. The patent was granted in 1708 with Queen Anne of England giving the property to thirteen of her royal subjects. After these thirteen original patentees received their new land they apparently did little else except to drink a toast to their new acquisitions. A condition of the grant was that settlement be made seven years after discovery but no attempts were made. Most of the owners never left England and the comforts of home to visit their property in the wilderness but did file several petitions asking for time extensions on settlement.

We at CMK have a lot to reflect on and be thankful for! This past year CMK closed out $47.8 Million in sales, bringing us to a total of $141.7

Million sold in just five years! CMK has been able to surge forward, even through a challenging local market. CMK Real Estate Broker Christian Klueg reflected, “Last year, we focused on refining our company from within to support our vast growth. We never want to get too comfortable, and had to be certain that we were being the most efficient, and forward-thinking as we possibly could. This keeps us at the top of our game for our clients, which is what its all about!” As far as the market is concerned, people often ask us, “Is it a good time to SELL or a good time to BUY?” The answer is YES! BOTH! We can analyze and measure supply vs. demand by looking at the MSI (Months Supply of Inventory). While there are high levels of inventory in some local markets, demand is the highest it has been since 2008. There are more buyers looking to buy than at any other point in the last 6 years. This is good news for sellers. An accurately priced property will sell in a reasonable amount of time. If you would like to know what the MSI is for your local market contact CMK today!

CMK recently held an appreciation event, which they dubbed “Free Coffee February”. On Wednesdays during February, CMK provided free coffee, tea, or hot chocolate at various Stewarts locations as a gesture of thanks to our clients and referral sources who have helped CMK succeed! Speed Limit Batchellerville Bridge New York State has notified the town that the speed limit on the Batchellerville Bridge is now 45 mph. This means that North and South Shore as well as the bridge and Northville Road are all 45mph.

Easement Agreement with Nature Conservancy The area known as 1000 Acre Swamp off of Fox Hill Road was purchased from Finch Pruyn Paper Company several years ago by the Nature Conservancy. They in turn will be selling the property to the State of New York. This land is home to the second largest population of moose in New York State. The Nature Conservancy is giving to the Town of Edinburg (at no cost to the town) a 50’ wide easement for a future snowmobile trail. This trail will also be available for hiking. The agreement includes 3 small parking areas as

well as a viewing area that will be accessible to the handicapped. The easement will be signed in the next few months and once the state takes title the terms of use will be determined.

Timber Harvesting Thanks to the efforts of the town highway department we have received $6156.79 to date from the sale of timber that has been cut in 2014. The total received for 2013 was $34241.18. These funds will be used this year to construct a pole barn so that all highway equipment will be undercover when not in use. The highway department will do the actual construction.

Time Warner Cable Rates The town has been notified by Time Warner Cable that they will be raising their rates with the first billing cycle in March 2014. The increases vary but appear to be $1.00 to $2.00 per month for various levels of service. The town has no control over their rates. Their franchise is up for renewal near the end of this year but even at franchise renewal we cannot negotiate rates. It has also just been announced they will be purchased by Comcast.

Letter to the Community, The Sixth Annual Walleye Ice Fishing Challenge took place on January 25 on the Great Sacandaga Lake, with weigh stations in Mayfield at Lanzi’s on the Lake and at the Broadalbin Boat Launch. The tournament once again was a sell out with 1750 fishing enthusiasts allowing for 250 more participants than in previous years. Approximately 54% of participants were from outside of Fulton County including participants from eleven states and various parts of New York State. These participants spent money in our county on hotel rooms, fishing supplies, fuel, bait and tackle, food and refreshments, and much more. We are grateful to all of them, their families and friends for making our county their destination on that day and hopefully to return to Fulton County on many more occasions. The continued success of this tournament would not be possible without the help of our entire Fulton County community and its businesses - Bartyzel, Inc., Frank’s Gun Shop, Frank & Sons Body Works, Inc., the Fulton Montgomery Regional Chamber of Commerce and its dedicated staff, the great staff and family at Fuel-N-Food, Lanzi’s on the Lake, Powerhouse Motorsports, All Seasons Equipment, County Line Auctions, Final Reward Trophy, Delaney Crushed Stone Products, Doherty Window & Door, Kingsboro Lumber, Greenscapes, Ross’ Bait Shop, Jim’s Bait Shop, Dave’s Bait Shop, Beebie Printing, R & D Contracting, the Town of Broadalbin, the Town of Mayfield, the Town of Northampton, the Town of Edinburg, the New York State DEC, the Great Sacandaga Lake Fisheries Federation, Maria and Beaver Ross, Denise and Nancy Stutzke, Jack Belknap, Ron Barnes, Rick Coyne, and many other individuals who helped in many ways to make this a great event. We are thankful to all of these businesses and individuals. And we are thankful to our Fulton County residents who welcome with open arms these and thousands of other visitors as they explore the great resources of Fulton County.

Raising a Family Scrapbooking is not for me. I know that many folks find scrapbooking a truly meaningful experience whereby one can document important moments in life. I find it a dirge of paper and materials that whirl around me in one expensive mess. I don’t have the patience. A sincere character flaw. Nonetheless, I was propelled into making a scrapbook page for a dear person in my family’s life and I thought how little the pictures told of the relationships between all of us in the photos. Relationships can be complicated, especially in a family. So much passes through a shared experience that to just put together a series of photos with some nice paper would never do. So to supplement the void, being the literary junkie that I am, I added text...and then more text... and then a bit more, until every photo had an explanation. And then I realized I was compiling more of a brief essay with illustrations than a scrapbooking page. What can I say? There is something to be said for being succinct, though I may need a bit more practice. What does the scrapbook of a person who thrives in cyberspace look like? “Selfies” of you and your computer don’t cut it. Posted emails to virtual friends aren’t it either. Comments to folks on social media aren’t quite right for this. There is certainly space for all of these dimensions of communication, but they don’t quite capture the essence of a true human relationship. And a family, being the heart of a truly human relationship, deserves more attention than technology can offer. More and more families are trying to walk the thin line between useful forms of communication and the replacement of relationships with computers. As humans, we must have contact with one another to be healthy. We are so proud to raise our family in an oasis like the Valley where we still have human relationships. No one is perfect at relationships. We are going to fall in and fall out at times, but that’s human beings. Let’s go for it, and leave the scrapbooking to the professionals. Wherever life takes you, take a little bit of the Valley with you.

Sacandaga Woodworkers

by Gary Spencer Our January Meeting devoted to sharpening was postponed due to inclement weather to our February 12th, meeting which was also threatened by bad weather but we managed to squeeze it in by a matter of hours. We had a fine program by Jim Schreiner who managed to take much of the mystery out of sharpening a variety of carving, chiseling and scraping tools. Many thanks to Jim for his knowledge and experience and his willingness to share them with us . Our March 12 Meeting will be devoted a discussion of the projects that will be raffled off at the annual Showcase at the end of the month. This years projects will include one Adirondack style piece and one piece of oak furniture. These will be outstanding and very desirable so when you come to NWA’s Showcase don’t miss taking a chance with a raffle ticket. The discussion at this meeting will focus on trials and tribulations of building these projects and how any problems were resolved. Should be a fun program. We will have show and tell and 50/50 as usual, so lets have a good turnout for a very interesting topic. Our regular monthly Chapter meetings are the second Wednesday of each month and begin at 7:00 P.M. Our next regular meeting will be March 12th , 2014. We will meet at our shop at 55 2nd Avenue, Mayfield, NY. Come visit. Directions or Information contact: Jim Hopkins - 725-7322 Don Wilson - 883-3698 Gary Spencer - 863-6433

EDINBURG BIBLE CHAPEL

from the Pastor’s Desk

Greetings Folks, My Goodness! Already, March is here. It was only about eight weeks ago we were ringing in the New Year and writing down those New Years resolutions! Just think, if all those resolutions don’t come through, you’ll have a head start on 2015!! Continuing with our thoughts on how quickly time goes by, don’t forget to turn the clocks ahead one hour on March 9th. March will just begin and plans will be made for April! There is Spring Break, the blessings of Easter, the prep work for the summer gardens, spring house cleaning and so on. That old adage “Time Flies” becomes more than an old saying, it becomes reality! As we begin our life’s journey we are soon confronted with another adage about time: “There’s just not enough time in a day.” It is one of those, “been there, done that.” The truth of the matter is in our response to this fact, “I will control time or time will control me.” Before the subtle traps of time become our everyday experience, let’s make a strong effort to slow down. Slow Down! Say it again to yourself. Slow Down!! It sounds and is Refreshing and Relaxing. Our ability to do this will bring instant rewards. R & R gives us renewed zeal, a different perspective, greater insight and discernment to the challenges of life. You agree and ask the question: Where do I start? How do I begin? May I suggest that you begin by reading your Bible and attending a worship service at Church. One reaction might be this: “Church! How in the world can going to church

give me the benefits of R & R?” Well, the Bible and worship services center around one person, that one person is God’s only begotten Son and our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. In the New Testament the first four books are called the “gospels.” Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. All four tell us about the life of Jesus. Each one tells us of the public ministry of Jesus. This public ministry was Only Three Years Long. In that three years of ministry, Jesus changed the world. Jesus’ public ministry began when he turned 30 years old and ended with his death on the cross at 33 years old. When reading about Jesus’ 3 year ministry and all that he accomplished, one asks the question, “How was it possible to do so much with so little time?” Surely, Jesus had to be “on the run”, “no time to rest”, Go! Go! Go!. In the Gospel of John 21:25 “Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written.” Just think, Jesus accomplished everything that he had to do without a PC, laptop, IPad, e-mail, Face Book, EBay, cell phone, credit card, etc!! And to top it off, Jesus WALKED!, yes WALKED wherever he went. If you are in the area, or looking for a home church, please come to any of the services at EBC. Come and rest your mind and spirit. The Depths of Despair or (Joy Comes in the Morning!) We all experience down times once in a while (the DEPTHS of despair, as I like to say). When going through those “depths of despair” times we sure do need encouragement, don’t we? The Pslams are great to read when our “depths of despair” times come upon us. Psalm 30 says “you lifted me out of the depths (there’s that word again).” Verse 5 says, “Weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning!” If you need to be lifted out of the depths of despair – ask Jesus to lift you up – He will give you joy in the morning! We were blessed recently by an inspiring concert (which would bring anyone out of the depths

of despair). Blind pianist, Duncan Homes shared his music and Christian testimony with us. He does concerts not only in churches, but also in schools, prisons, colleges, radio and on TV across America. He has travelled throughout the world with musical groups, too. All I can say is, his music warms the heart and nourishes the soul. (He is fun too!) Plus his seeing eye dog, Lucky, is just delightful. Hopefully, we can have Duncan and Lucky back for a return visit. On March 11 at 7 PM we are honored to have the Women’s Choir from Moody Bible Institute (we are being careful not to call them the Moody Women’s Choir). Come and join us for this free concert. It’s going to be great and I’m sure uplifting for your soul. Last month our men enjoyed a “Bakin’ Bacon Dinner” at BCON Corner. You ask, “What is that”? Well – the men cooked their best bacon dishes and then 2 judges chose 1st , 2nd and 3rd prize for the tastiest bacon dishes. Old men and young alike enjoyed a fun night out and a devotional time shared by our own, Bill Pitcher. On Sat. March 29th our ladies are hosting a women’s night out – minus the bacon, of course! (We need this after all the snow and cold temps we’ve been pounded with this winter. We’re all suffering from cabin fever, right?) This event will be held at BCON Corner also. Women and young ladies are asked to bring their favorite dessert or appetizer. (There will be no food judging – just fun and some down time.) Hey girls, why not bring a friend? Check out our church website: http://www.baptistchurchofnorthville.org If you do not have a church family, join us for worship at Northville Baptist Church. Feel free to call Pastor Rick Klueg or Pastor George Hopper at the church office: 518.863.8001 or just stop by sometime to chat. If you come to a worship service, please introduce yourself to me at the front door where I greet people

along with my husband, Rick, at the close of the service. Let me know that you read our church article in the Edinburg Newsletter. Or if you have email – shoot me an email to say you read our articles. My email is [email protected] or you can always let me know via Facebook. God Bless You real good this month! HealthLink Littauer’sWELLNESS WORDS

Submitted by Wendy Chirieleison M.S. Ed. Community Health Educator

SEVEN SIMPLE STEPS TO A HEALTHIER HEART According to the American Heart Association (AHA), four out of every ten Americans think that they have the ideal cardiovascular health. Are you one of them? By understanding the risk factors associated with heart disease and taking an honest look at your lifestyle choices, you can gain a more realistic picture of just what your cardiovascular health truly is. More importantly, if need be, you can take steps to get back on track!MANAGE YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE High blood pressure (also known as hypertension) is considered the “silent killer” because it has no symptoms, unless significant damage has already been done. It’s also the single most significant risk factor for heart disease. According to the AHA, one out of every three adults has high blood pressure, but about 20% of them do not know they have it. Only about half of those who know they have high blood pressure have it under control. What can you do about this? Know your numbers! Have your blood pressure checked. If it’s high, discuss lifestyle changes with your provider and take medication as prescribed if necessary. (Be sure to discuss any side effects with your provider…don’t just stop taking your medication!) Eat a healthy, balanced diet (easy on the salt / sodium) and exercise for 30 minutes each day. GET ACTIVE A recent survey by the AHA shows that less than two out of every ten people get the recommended 150 minutes of exercise every week. People who exercise have better health than those who do not. What can you do? After checking with your provider, start an exercise program that raises your heart rate for 30 minutes a day. Don’t have 30 minutes? Try breaking that into two 15 minute sessions or even three 10 minute sessions! So, what if you don’t like to exercise but you like to read? How about an audio book while you walk? Many libraries have a wide variety of audio e-books available. If you are more social, how about getting

together with friends for a walk, or joining an exercise class together?CONTROL BLOOD SUGAR Adults with diabetes are two to four times more likely to have heart disease or a stroke than adults without diabetes. For those with diabetes, controlling blood sugar is key in reducing cardiovascular risk. The carbohydrates we eat are turned into glucose (a type of sugar) to help maintain energy. Simple carbohydrates, like white bread and sweets, elevate our blood sugar faster than other healthier foods. This causes the body to produce extra insulin to manage energy levels, but also encourages the growth of plaques in our arteries, increasing the risk of heart disease and stroke. What can you do? Discuss your risk factors for diabetes with your provider and ask about a blood sugar test. If you have been diagnosed with diabetes, work with your provider to manage it. A healthy diet, portion control and physical activity are key in controlling blood sugar. CONTROL CHOLESTEROL, EAT BETTER, LOSE WEIGHT Everyone has cholesterol, which is a waxy substance in the bloodstream and cells. Some cholesterol is important for good health, but too much can put you at risk for heart disease and stroke. Bad cholesterol, or LDL, slowly builds up along your artery walls. Over time, they combine with other materials in your bloodstream and form plaques, or thick substances that narrow the arteries making it harder for the blood to flow smoothly. How can you control cholesterol? About 25% of cholesterol comes from the food we eat, so making healthier food choices is important. Fish, lean meats, beans, whole grains, low fat dairy products, fruits, and veggies are all great choices you can incorporate into your diet. Start the tradition of ‘Meatless Mondays,’ or try making a large dinner salad once a week with homemade salad dressing, substituting half of the oil with no sugar added fruit juice, lemon or lime juice, or rice vinegar which has a sweet taste. Eating better will in turn, help you lose weight. According to the AHA, a body mass index (BMI) of less than 25 is what you need for optimal cardiovascular health. BMI is a height to weight comparison that identifies your ideal body weight.

You may be able to have your BMI tested at your doctor’s office, or at health screenings like those offered by HealthLink. You should also know how many calories you need to eat each day, and be sure to get enough activity.DON’T SMOKE Cigarette smoking increases the risk of coronary heart disease and is the leading cause of preventable disease and death in the U.S. Even if you have been smoking all of your life, your body will begin to repair itself the moment you stop smoking. Talk with your doctor about ways to quit. Try calling the Smokers’ Quitline at 1-866-697-8487 (nysmokefree.org) for advice, tips, and a free starter kit including a set of patches. You can also join the Smokefree Support Group that meets at Nathan Littauer Hospital or call HealthLink to speak with a cessation coach. After reading about the seven simple steps to a healthier heart, you probably recognize a recurring theme. Make better choices when it comes to food and get 30 minutes of exercise each day. Focusing on those two areas alone will help you take great strides towards improving your heart and overall health in 2014 and beyond! For more information, contact HealthLink Littauer at 736-1120. Belated Happy Valentines Day to everyone…Hope all of you had a wonderful day. It is a day of flowers and candy and all sorts of wonderful things. If you are trying to watch your weight and eat healthy, we hope you were able to accomplish that and enjoy the day also. We know that this winter has been a definite challenge as far as staying upbeat and focused on what is important to us. We keep getting sidetracked by all the snow and frigid weather we have experienced this year. It can be a time where it is very easy to get off track and just sit in our houses and feel gloomy. However, winter can be a wonderful, beautiful time of the year, if we are positive in our thinking. If you are able to, it is exhilarating to go for a walk, no matter how short it might be. Also, you could try some new healthy recipes that will make you feel satisfied that you have overcome the winter doldrums without losing any progress that you have made in your mission to eat healthier and help on achieving our weight loss goals. At our meetings, our group likes to have an impromptu round table discussion of what we have done or will do to keep

us on the path to being healthier and happier. We learn many things with these discussions and listening to food recipes or items that someone has tried over the week. For example, this past week one of our members, Janet Witts, brought in samples of various types of dried sweet potatoes . They were very delicious and much healthier than a bag of potato chips. Every month at our meetings our members receive special recognition and certificates for accomplishing weight losses during the month. For the month of January we are proud to announce our winners: Best Loser of the Month – Peg Mesnik – She received a charm and a certificate for her accomplishment Certificates of Loss – Jane Smith, Janet Witts, Peg Mesnick Congratulations on the great work!!! We would like to welcome anyone who would like to attend a meeting to see what TOPS is about and how TOPS and the support of your fellow members and yourself can reach the goals you aspire to meet. We meet every Wednesday night at the United Methodist Church in Northville in the Youth Room upstairs. Weigh In is from 5:30 to 6:00 pm and our meeting is immediately after weigh in time. We would enjoy having you join us for a meeting. Hope to see you there….

Superintendent

($2.50 as of 2/17/2014)

Edinburg Family and Friends,

We hoped you enjoyed the February break along with the snow days. I hope that we will be spared any additional snow days in the month of March. It’s hard to believe that we are half way through this school year. As I walk through the building, I see our students working hard every day and they are consistently mastering their lesson at grade level. Congratulations to Brytney Moore for an excellent performance at the Capital Region Spelling Bee, held at Proctor’s Theater on February 11, 2014. We are very proud of Brytney for her accomplishments. We would also like to thank Mrs. Patricia Colson for coordinating and being the official emcee for our long standing

Spelling Bee tradition over the last ten years. She has stepped down from coordinating this fun regional activity and has passed it on to another teacher. Our second quarter marking period has ended. Listed are the students who achieved 85-90% for Honor Roll and 90% or higher for High Honor Roll. Congratulations to all!Basketball season is underway. Mr. Moore, Mr. Sitts, and Mr. Mylott hold practices 3 days per week with two groups of players; 3/4 graders and 5/6 graders. Their first game will be held on February 28 @ 4:15 p.m. at Lake Pleasant school. Go Eagles! And Let’s Go Warm Weather!

An Eagle’s Eye on the Second Grade

by Mrs. Michelle Ellis In reading, we are learning so many interesting facts about the foundations of our country and our government. In our latest module, we read about The War of 1812. Our class learned about some of the important people in our history such as James Madison, Dolley Madison, Mary Pickersgill, and Francis Scott Key. We also studied ancient Greek and Asian civilizations. We were able to have an understanding of their countries, government, and beliefs. Learning about the Greek gods and goddesses was intriguing for the children. Several students brought in books from home and also visited local libraries in search of books on Greek mythology that related to our lessons. I was pleased to watch my students take such an interest in this topic.

In math, we have been working on place values. The Common Core has been extremely challenging for us in the second grade. We are learning new ways to decompose numbers and different ways to skip count. The children have been trying their very best and our families have been working very hard at home to help their children understand the material. Kudos to ALL; I am so proud of you! Hip Hip Hooray for the 100th Day! Recently, the second grade students enjoyed activities around the 100th day of school. In one day, the students read 100 short stories, each completed 100 math facts, completed a 100 piece puzzle, and even had a snack that totaled 100 pieces. The students and their families also created 100 piece projects that were displayed in the hallway. Students glued 100 items to a poster board. I would like to thank all the families for sending in their projects. We had so much fun counting and comparing the collections. Have a safe March, and Happy St. Patrick’s Day from Mrs. Ellis’ second grade class.

grandchildren but understand his need to advocate for mom until the end. Dad is there for us when we need him and was there for us last weekend. I love you Dad! After our visit with Dad, we moved across Florida and down the west coast. We saw 3 different couples that we have not seen for a very long time, caught up on each others past, and moved forward like there was no interruption of time. True friends last a lifetime! Speaking of which, I reached out on FB to family and friends last night. This morning I woke up to overwhelming prayers and encouragement. As I have done often in the past few days I started to cry. These tears are healing tears. We are blessed by our friends and family. We are blessed to be in this beautiful place in the Everglades. No matter how bad things seem to be there is always a positive side. You are all shoveling snow and I am about to go for a long walk in the Florida sunshine. As I typed that last sentence I felt a smile widen across my face myself, but I will not boast anymore. I am sorry but I needed that. Hug your family and enjoy the winter weather land called The Great Sacandaga Lake!

TOPS 1005 TOPS doesn’t pay celebrities to endorse us, and we don’t promise fixes or promote unrealistic images of the perfect body. TOPS focuses on making small steady lifestyle changes that provide lasting weight loss and better health. We are nonprofit noncommercial. Which means costs are kept low and advertising is not accepted. Our chapters provide a non judgmental place where people learn how they can make changes and get the support they need to reach their goals. Our TOPS members learn to eat better, move more and stay motivated through engaging educational programs that our experts prepare and that volunteers present at weekly meetings. Our KOPS BL was Helen Harrington and the TOPS BL was Hadley Jacobs... Other losers include... Pat Wilcox, Arden Detweiler, and Carmen Durkin. We are in the midst of our ‘Be a winner, Be a loser’ road contest.... Each member earns points by calling a member, staying for a meeting, losing weight/being at or below goal, and bringing in a menu!! We are also doing a marble game with names being picked out of a basket. If you pick a black marble, you get half of the pot! We shared some low fat recipes... Terry Poulin sent a recipe for buffalo cauliflower bites, Carmen Durkin shared her baked Kale chip recipe and Nancy Bassett brought in her ranch

oyster crackers to the group! Losing weight isn’t just about counting calories or what the scale reports. We want to support you as you become more active, change habits and cope with everyday stress. To accomplish this, we at 1005 Northville, have programs and current information to share with you. Lifestyle changes take a lifetime, not a few weeks. Since 1948, TOPS’ philosophy continues to be that ongoing support and accountability, week after week, works best. We know you can do it and we are here for you! Feel free to join us on Tuesdays at the Bradt Building (downstairs meeting room) on Main Street in Northville. The time for our meetings is at 5pm and one meeting is free. For more information, call 863-8389 or visit us at www.tops.org on the web. “See you lighter”.

I am sitting on my couch gazing out the window enjoying the peace and calm of the early morning. I am feeling anything but calm. I am struggling to write my article on a tablet because I still do not have a laptop. It is one of the many items stolen from our house and you do not realize how much you depend on something until it is gone. I am pecking away with one finger so please forgive my grammar and spelling. I hope to have my new laptop early next week. We ordered a new one after the robbery but when it came it froze up within minutes of trying to set it up. There was a war with Dell to take it back and send out a new one. If we treated our customers the way Dell treated us we would have no work, but I digress. Since early January I feel as if we have been knocked down repeatedly. Currently we are dealing with a personal family issue that has my heart torn to shreds. Sleep eludes Bill and I

and we feel we have no control over anything. Our heart aches for both our boys and as a parent you never stop worrying about your babies. Sometimes you have to make the tough decisions and hand it all over to God. That is why I am watching the seagulls float on the water. I have to remind myself of the positive things that have happened in the past weeks. We were finally able to get out of NY and make it to Florida. My dad arrives at the nursing home at 6:15 every morning. Mom does not change much from visit to visit; she just sleeps more often. It is my dad I worry about as he is weary but committed to his devotion to my mom. I want him to be able to spend time with his grandchildren and great
