Rev. Canon Jane, Kenchington, 01454 313159, email:[email protected]

Dear Friends,“Behold how good and pleasant it is to dwell together in unity. It is like the precious oilupon the head, running down upon the beard, even Aaron’s beard, running down uponthe collar of his clothing. It is like the dew of Herman running down upon the hills ofZion. For there the Lord has promised his blessing: even life for evermore.”(Psalm 133)

The question of unity has been occupying my mind recently. Every January, theChristian churches traditionally observe the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, wherewe pray for unity amongst our different Christian denominations. In St. John’s gospel,we find Jesus praying that the disciples will be “one” – unity was certainly on Jesus’heart because he knew that when his followers lived in unity with one another, thenGod’s glory/character would be seen by others.Disunity between the Christian denominations is a scandal and although unity on aninstitutional level seems to go at a snail’s pace, there have been encouragingdevelopments at the grass roots level for many years. When I was growing up, it reallywas a “big deal” to meet a Methodist minister and hear him preach in the Anglicanchurch…and discover that he believed what we claimed to believe in the C of E!Within our own churches in this Benefice, it’s a scandal to God when we are not united. One hears of people who won’t talk to certain other people, for instance. We have thechallenge of learning to face and live with each other, recognising that we are broken, sinful and wounded people striving to learn how to live, work, worship, fellowship andengage in mission together. Thomas Merton, the late Trappist monk wrote:"As long as we are on earth, the love that unites us will bring us suffering by our everycontact with one another, because this love is the resetting of a Body of broken bones.Even saints cannot live with saints on this earth without some anguish, without somepain at the differences that come between them. There are two things people can doabout the pain of disunion with other people. They can love or they can hate.”Since we are now in the penitential season of Lent, can I invite you all to look deeplyinto your hearts and ask yourselves whether you are helping to contribute to disunityin the church? The truth of the matter is that every one of us is in some way or other– because we are all flawed human beings and we all get irritated at times. But Godlongs for us to be filled with his love and forbearance; God yearns for our Christiancommunities to be places of unity and love.

“Take away, good Lord, the sin that corrupts us; give us the sorrow that heals and thejoy that praises and restore by grace your own image within us, that we may take ourplace among your people; in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.”(CW prayer at the end of Psalm 51)

With my love and prayers,

Mother’s UnionFriday 1st March will be TheWomen’s World Day ofPrayer to be held in StJohn’s Church Chipping Sodbury.

The beginnings of Mother’s UnionWhen Mary Sumner founded the Mother’sUnion she was the wife of a vicar, agrandmother and she saw the need to helpwomen in the home and family

Turn the clock back to 1867; we had noNational Health Service, - alright we allcomplain at the time it takes to get anappointment now, but then you either gotbetter or you died. Only if you had money, lots of money and could afford to pay forhelp could you get action, and even thenthings did not always go the right way.

If you did not have a job you had nomoney, no home, no food and very littlehope. You could not borrow; everyone wasin the same position. Children were not

educated, even with money, and youneeded to be from a very wealthybackground to have enough to pay fortutors. It was thought that the girls werenot really worth spending too much moneyon; they could get a husband, wealthy ifthey were really lucky, or from their ownpoor background and join the same poorcircle.

So what you might say, things are differentnow, but are they? We still have povertyin this country, children are going to schoolhungry, and not all parents have a fairwage job. That is where help from theMother’s Union, and from you, is needed. One way to help is to support the FoodBank by giving food that can be distributedto families around here who have fallenshort of money for many reasons such asredundancy, no job prospects or just thatwelfare payments have not come through.

There are many other projects run by theMother’s Union in this country andoverseas. I will tell you more about thesein future articles in this series on MothersUnion.

The Local Mother’s Union. One of the objectives of the Mother’sUnion is to support our local churches. Werecently helped to provide catering for amarriage preparation day held at thechurch centre, and we provide andprepare the posies given out on Mother’sDay

Our last meeting was an interesting talkby a representative of the Children’sSociety, which the church supports, anddetails of this year’s collection can befound later in this magazine.

Our next meeting is “Meditation” for Lentand will be held in the Lady Chapel at St.John’s at 7-30pm on Monday 11thMarch.

New Curate on PlacementThe Rev Elizabeth Sidwell, who is a curatein Bath and Wells diocese, will be comingfor a month’s Placement with us fromaround 20 May.Here she introduces herself in advance ofher arrival:The eldest of 3 girls I’m one of thosepeople who had a happy childhood in aloving family. My parents lived in Surreyas my father worked in London, but bothcame from further west, and slowly movedback towards Somerset through theirmarried lives. After Secondary School in Reading, I wentup to Girton College Cambridge to readHistory (my knowledge of which largelyfinishes in 1485, with a bit of postrevolutionary France) and then got a jobwith the Central Electricity GenerationBoard purchasing and transporting coalfrom pit to Power Station, an obvious jobfor an historian. This was followed by a jobinvolved in budgeting and strategicplanning. On the privatisation of theindustry in 1992 I accepted voluntaryredundancy .An MSc at Swansea took me into the fieldof international Community Developmentand I spent 3 years as country director forChristian Outreach Relief andDevelopment in Vietnam. This was afantastic job – I was funded to do a 9month feasibility study to identify where towork and what issues needed to betackled, then we got on with the projects. After this I worked for 6 years in Ghanaworking for the Anglican church throughUSPG (United Society for the Propagationof the Gospel - now called “Us”), firstly asDiocesan Development Officer inKoforidua-Ho diocese. . This took me, withtwo very good local colleagues, out toparishes to see how the churches could

help their congregations develop theirlivelihoods. Quite a lot of the best work Idid was to help people organisethemselves so they did not get half waythrough something and find they could notfinish it. Then, when the new Diocese ofHo was established, I moved across to setup the diocesan secretariat and treasury.By this stage, my sister was working withAvon Bulbs, a mail order nursery nearSouth Petherton in S Somerset, and myparents had moved to Martock to be closerto the grandchildren. So when I returnedto UK I sold the flat I had kept on inLondon, and moved to S Somerset myself.I went through the “discernment” processwith the Diocese of Bath and Wells, andwent to Ripon College, Cuddesdon in2008 to train for ordination in the C of E.Ordained deacon in 2010, and priest inJuly 2011, I work in St. Cuthbert’s parishchurch in the city of Wells, together withSt. Mary Magdalene’s, Wookey Hole.

Bishop John’s RetirementMessage

R o s e m a r yand I havevery mixedfeelings aswe approachthe end ofour time inGloucesterdiocese. It’sbeen a hugep r i v i l e g e

sharing in ministry here for 17 years as acolleague of two diocesan bishops, asuccession of archdeacons, three deans, numerous gifted clergy and a vast numberof lay people serving as Readers, in LocalMinistry Teams and a rich variety of otherways. I have been privileged to beinvolved at so many different levels ofdiocesan life. I have enjoyed enormouslymeeting with potential ordinands inpreparation for a national selectionconference; it has been very moving to sitand listen to an account of God at work intheir lives leading them into deeperdiscipleship and forward on an excitingjourney. I have greatly valued leadingfaith-sharing ventures in parishes, someover a long week-end, some for a weeklong. Sharing in confirmation services hasbeen a great privilege and in more recenttimes with the Common Worship serviceoften having candidates share how theycame to a living faith; I’ve often thoughttheir testimony much more effective thananything I might communicate in asermon. It’s been great to share in the lifeof parishes; to spend time alongsideclergy; to be there in a supportive andencouraging role for Readers. We haveenjoyed living in two very differentcommunities, Hempsted and Staverton

and two different homes where we havehad the opportunity to offer hospitalityespecially to a succession of clergy –Staverton especially has been great forthis. We have made many friends; weshall carry with us into the future many richmemories. Above all we have beendeeply conscious of God’s faithfulnessand the privilege of serving Christ, hischurch and the wider community. Wehope many of you will join us in GloucesterCathedral on Saturday 2nd March at 4.30for what will be a relaxed all-age eucharistwhen we will be giving thanks for theprivilege of ministry here over the past 17years and committing ourselves to thenext stage of ministry as a “house for duty”priest (a priest who works part-time unpaidin return for a house to live in) in Latimerin Buckinghamshire. In the words of aformer United Nations General Secretary“for all that has been thanks; for all that isto be, yes!”John Bishop of Tewkesbury

New Book Published:“Soul Pain”“Soul Pain” is a book published by TheCanterbury Press which was launched inChurch House, Gloucester on the 5thFebruary. The editor, Professor JennyTann, was conscious that many clergyspend time with people who are facingdeath or suffering from critical illness andshe was intrigued as to how clergy copewhen they face this sort of experiencethemselves. So she invited some clergy who hadfaced such an experience in their ownlife to write an essay. The book is acollection of these essays – and one ofthe contributors is Jane Kenchington. The book can be bought throughAmazon.co.uk/books for £16.14.

What does it mean toexperience Easter?I have a special bag in my study that hassome of my ‘treasures’ from my lastparish, among them a handmade bookletof thank yous from all the children whocame to ‘Experience Easter’ at our church. They heard the story of Easter andentered into it through the activities ateach station and by sharing their thoughtsand feelings. In the booklet afterwards onechild wrote, ‘It was very cool and helpedme understand the story better,’ and ateacher said, ‘Thank you for all the hardwork to prepare Experience Easter. It wasfantastic for the children to get a betterunderstanding of Easter (and staff too!)’If your church is running ‘ExperienceEaster’ and you have invited local schoolsto come and participate, I hope it goesimmensely well, and thank you for givingyour time and efforts in sharing the Easter

good news with children and young people. However the posters and flyers issued toevery church don’t specify that‘Experience Easter’ is an event to whichschools are invited. They simply inviteeverybody to Experience Easter. Toexperience something is to be directlyinvolved, to participate. To participate inEaster is to get involved with the personof Jesus Christ. It is to understand, as bestwe can, the journey to the cross, thebetrayal and suffering, his death andresurrection, and not just understand butto find our life, our experience within thelife and experience of Jesus.St Paul writes, ‘Consider yourselves deadto sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.’This is what it means to participate inEaster – it is notabout what weknow, or what wesay, it is about howwe live – as peopleof hope, as peopleof the resurrection.Archdeacon JackieArchdeacon ofGloucester, the Ven Jackie Searle

‘The Bible gives me peace’Temperatureshave fallen wellbelow zero inLondonrecently. But ablue sleepingbag is all thatkeeps the coldout for 40-year-old Mark Alder.

His home, during daylight hours, is thepavement of Victoria Street. Peoplestream pass him as if he’s invisible.‘People think that if you’re homeless it’syour fault,’ he says. ‘And it’s true thatthere are some people who get into drinkand drugs and all that and end upmaking themselves homeless. ‘But it’snot true. It just happens to some people.’And Mark is one of those people. Markcarries two large bags that are mostly fullof bedding. But deep in one bag is hisBible. He was given it a few months agoby Chas Bayfield, a Christian who worksin one of London’s top marketingagencies. He reads it eight hours a dayand is now on his 14th read through.‘The thing that sticks out to us is howmuch of a nice bloke Jesus was. That’sthe only way I can put it, nothing was abother to him. I would like to be like that.’Reading the Bible he says, ‘gives uspeace, it gives us solace, it gives ussomething to believe in. What else have Igot? ‘I went to a Roman Catholic school,’he says. ‘But the way the Bible wasexplained went straight over your head. But now I’m understanding it. I like whatI’m reading.’Slowly, Mark is re-building his life. He’sfound a place in a hostel, which keepshim out of the cold winter nights. It alsogives him a much-needed address withwhich to apply for jobs.
