Dear Brother Knights,
On behalf of my wife and family I would like to wish each
and every one of you a Very Blessed and Joyous Easter, may
our risen Lord bless you all and guide you spiritually as you
help to spread his word by your acts of charity.
We as men of faith and members of this great organisation
should always keep in mind our principles of Charity, Unity, Fraternity & Patriotism, when we
carry out our work or lend a helping hand to anyone that needs our help, be it our own
members, committees or members of the parish or community. We should learn to give of
ourselves without reservation or looking at our own comfort, because it’s through giving that
we will receive God’s blessing.
We start a busy season once again as you will observe from the calendar and I urge you all to
come forward and help to the best of your capabilities. We have the BC & Yukon Convention
looming ahead, so please lend a hand when and if someone calls you for your support. We
will be having special masses through the Convention dates so please try and attend some of
the masses and see the Knights of Columbus in all its splendor and you will feel rewarded for
being part of this humble and simple minded organisation. There are two social events on
26th
and 27th
try to make an effort and attend either one and support your council in
attendance. We also have our Major Degree coming up on April 13th
. All brothers that are 1st
degree members should avail of this opportunity as henceforth 2nd
and 3 Degree will be held
on 2 separate dates, since we have just formed and have a certified 2nd
degree team now in
place in our district.
We are planning many sport events for brothers and families during the coming months and
also will be holding many social gatherings where we all can come and have some fun at very
low cost. We are opening our organisational structure to include many new brothers that
would like to share their expertise and talents with us, so please come forward and let us
know under what committee you would like to lend your support and we will definitely
include you. Also we will be starting the K of C Wheelchair Foundation in a few weeks so
please support this worthwhile cause and join us to run this efficiently. God Bless
Vivat Jesus!

FIELD AGENT’S MESSAGE
Jose P. Cabalu, FIC, CHS Field Agent
Knights of Columbus Member Benefits
This is to refresh our memories as to what comes with our membership in terms of fraternal benefits. Please keep a copy for reference as you invite potential candidates to join the Order.
1) Each member receives a monthly copy of Columbia magazine at no charge. The magazine keeps our more than 1.8 million members updated on common interests.
2) Under our “Outreach to Widows” program, the wives of deceased members continue to receive Columbia
magazine at no charge for as long as they live. 3) Daily at St. Mary’s church, the birthplace of the Order in New Haven, a Mass is offered for all deceased
members of the Knights of Columbus, and the deceased wives of members are now also included. 4) Members, wives, children and widows of members are eligible for any of the numerous scholarships (see
http://www.kofc.org/un/en/scholarships/index.html). 5) The Member/Spouse Fraternal Benefit, available in the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico and Guam,
provides an accidental death benefit for each member in good standing provided his council is in good standing. The Spouse of a member is also provided an accidental death benefit in the same amount as the member, all at no charge. The benefit for each spouse ranges from $1,000 to $2,500 depending on the number of years of uninterrupted membership in the Order.
6) For Knights of Columbus Insurance Certificate Holders only, the Order offers two benefit programs.
a) The Family Fraternal Benefit * provides:
i) A $5,000 life insurance plan at standard rates for a member’s new born child who may be uninsurable or rated, provided application is made before the child is 61 days old.
3 | P a g e
ii) A $5,000 life insurance plan at rated premium for a member’s uninsurable child between the ages of 60 days and 18 years.
iii) A $5,000 life insurance plan at standard rates for a member’s child with mental retardation, who is otherwise in good health, between the ages of 3 years and 18 years.
iv) A $1,500 death benefit when a child dies prior to the 61st day after birth. v) A $750 death benefit when a child is stillborn at least 20 weeks after conception. (The Order upholds
the fact that life begins at conception. Notwithstanding that, the 20-week rule is necessary because the benefit requires a death certificate that is not available prior to 20 weeks.)
* [To be eligible, the member must be in good standing with his Council and either he or his wife must be insured under a Knights of Columbus certificate requiring an annual premium of at least $150, or providing at least $5,000 permanent life insurance coverage.]
b) The Orphan Fraternal Benefit**provides
i) Payments of $80 per month for support of eligible orphans until he/she reaches age 19, graduates from high school, enters the military, marries, discontinues K of C insurance, or no longer attends school (except in the case of a disabling illness). The benefit continues until age 23 if the orphan attends college or vocational/technical school full time.
ii) An educational grant of up to $1,750 each year based on financial need up to a maximum of $7,000 over a four-year period.
**[For a child to be eligible, the father must be in good standing with his council and at least one parent is insured under a Knights of Columbus certificate requiring an annual premium of at least $150, or providing at least $5,000 permanent life insurance coverage. Additionally, the child must be under 19 years of age and be insured by an individual Knights of Columbus certificate.]

Once again as has been the tradition we were challenged by the Lifeteen group of our
parish to a sporting event. We were told it would be volleyball and were asked if we would be up to the challenge that was thrown our way. Being the men we are of such a great organisation I readily accepted their offer and a date was set to play against them. We started a few practice sessions and on that fateful day a team of valiant knights led by GK Kevin Mendonca, IPGK Edgar Ursua, PDD Kim Ng, Sports Director Manny Tolentino, Chancellor Rufino Lachica, Lorenzo Crisologo, Pat Macken, Sean Fox, Willy Sincoganue and his daughter Paula and Catalino Orillaneda showed the crowd what “these men they call Knights” were all about. We played against around 20 -25 of the youth for a total of 5 sets and beat them fair and square, thus we held on to the perpetual trophy for this year by thwarting another attempt by the Lifeteen to beat us at sports. To show we were still big hearted and caring men, pizza and pop was arranged for all the Lifeteen members and guests that attended to cheer their teams. It was a great time enjoyed by all as its evident by the attached photos. We could not do this without our cheer leaders namely Priscilla Ursua, Bridget Mendonca, Vanessa Lachica and Luz Sincaganue that kept the spirit high for all around.

ST PATRICKS DAY PANCAKE BREAKFAST AND MEMBERSHIP BLITZ
We held our monthly Pancake Breakfast on Sunday the Feast of St Patrick, to keep with the tradition we added a little twist to our breakfast and served green pancakes, by our brothers that were all dressed and geared in traditional St Patrick’s colors. We also held our Membership Blitz at this breakfast and got quite a few potential candidates that are being pursued to join at a later date.

SPRINGBREAK
BASKETBALL
GAMES
Once again this year we held a few days of games for the kids during their spring break. We had scheduled March 18th to 20th and again 25th to 27th for the kids to come out and play in the school gym. Kudos to our Sports Director Bro Manny who came every scheduled day and trained and supervised the kids. Also a big Thank you to Bro Romer Martin and his wife Rowena who came out to lend a hand.
There were around 20 kids that showed up every day to play and have some fun. It gave them an opportunity to warm up practice and sharpen their skills at basketball. They immensely enjoyed playing each day that they have requested we do this more often for them.
A big thank you goes out to the youngsters that made it every day and encouraged their friends to come out and play with them. I am sure next year we will have a much bigger group. We hope to hold some more games during the summer vacation. This is really a great opportunity for school going kids to have some fun and get their daily physical activity at the same time.

Once again a group of 55 Council 6855 members and families drove down from Richmond to Lois Lane in New Westminster for a friendly game of Bowling. We thank Council 12861 St Monica for hosting the event and Bro Francis Yong for getting the members to sign up for the event.
From the on start Council 6855 dominated the other councils by their sheer numbers in attendance and it was only natural that a number of awards, trophies would be heading our way.
Our Faithful Master of the 4th Degree SK Tony Pimentel was on hand to lead us in prayers and then the event was opened by our DD Ed Panes, who thanked the organisers and attendees for making this event possible. It is evident from the photographs below that all who came out had a wonderful time, but alas we will have to find a new venue for our next JC Bowling as Lois Lane has closed down its business and this was our last event there.

Brothers let us join together and congratulate Brother Francis and wife Joan Lee as being chosen the Family of the Month for March 2013. Bro Francis and Joan have been part of the Knights of Columbus since 2002. Bro Francis has served on the Executive Committee as Guard and now Lecturer for our Council. He is also a member of our First Degree Team and is also a Member of the 4th Degree. Bro Francis is our Vocation Chairman, besides that he is in-charge of our Joint Council Golf Committee and teams up with Bro Francis Yong at our Pennies for Heaven Drive. Bro Francis helps with ushering at mass and in the kitchen for our monthly pancake breakfast. He also volunteers his time at the Canadian Blood Services Clinic at St Paul.
Sister Joan is a very strong supporter of the Knights of Columbus and can be seen at all events lending a
helping hand with her cheerful smile. She is active at the Bible study classes and is a volunteer at the
Hospice run by Vancouver Coastal Health. Francis and Joan are regulars at the dancercise classes. They
supported our October Devotion Daily Rosary by their daily attendance. They also support Pro Life issues
and 40 Days for Life Campaign. You can see them devoutly at the Adoration Chapel and on weekday
masses.
Congratulations Bro Francis and Sister Joan, may your commitment and dedication in service to God and
your community inspire us to follow your examples. God Bless and Thank You.
Brothers join me in congratulating Bro Francis Yong as being chosen ‘ Knight of the Month ‘ for March 2013. Bro Francis has been with the Knights since 2002, and has been part of the Executive Committee for many years. He is also part of the 1st and 2nd Degree team and is a regular at all General, Executive and Special Events meetings.

Bro Francis is always ready and willing to help out at the shortest notice and enjoys contributing his time and talent for the Knights. He is a regular at JC Picnics and Summer Camping trips and can be seen on many occasions with his song book and guitar.
Congratulation Bro Francis Yong and Thank you for your devotion and dedication to our Order.
