Are you confused by all the “new” information about stretching, flexibility and athletic performance? If so, you aren’t alone. Expert opinions conflict on the benefits and harms of stretching and flexibility and a growing number of voices can be heard claiming that flexibility is overrated and stretching really makes no difference at all. I bring the subject up as an older rider who truly believes that without my flex-ibility routine I could not ride. Let’s get the lowdown on stretching and flexibility.

What Is Flexibility?Flexibility refers to range of mo-

tion (ROM) around a joint. This is pretty straight-forward and is generally based upon our anatomy and the function of a specific joint. Each joint has an ideal or normal range of motion in order to main-tain stability while it moves through a full range of motion. Too much ROM in a joint can be just as harmful as too little ROM, and re-sult in joint instability, dislocations and deterioration. Physical limits to range of motion are determined by our skeleton, joint type, ligaments, tendons, muscles, etc.

Other things that affect ROM include disease, injuries and adapta-tions to repeated movements. This last one is often overlooked by athletes as one of the biggest factors in our “limited ROM.” We adapt to what we do. If we consistently play one sport, or perform the same (limited) movement patterns over years, we will adapt to those pat-terns.

What Is Stretching?Unlike flexibility, stretching refers to actively attempting to increase

our range of motion around a joint. And this is where all those expert opinions enter the picture. Should we actively attempt to increase a given range of motion around a joint? Well, the answer is, it depends. It depends on how our joint range of motion compares with the nor-mal range of motion for that same joint. It depends on what muscles we over- or under-use. It depends on our injuries. And it depends on our goals. Bio-mechanic experts and physical therapists generally use the norms for normal range of motion around a joint as the basis for determining muscle imbalances. The goal is to return a patient to

“normal range of motion.” PTs also use comparative range of motion--comparing one side of the body to the other--to determine what joint or joints need ‘fixing.’

Athletes and FlexibilityCertain sports set athletes up for muscle imbalance and reduced

ROM in specific joints. Take cyclists, for example. Cycling requires a limited, repeated motion of the hip, knee and ankle. At no point is the cyclist moving through a maximum range of motion around those joints, which often leads to strong, yet tight muscles. The aerodynamic cycling position puts the spine in lumbar and thoracic flexion and cervi-cal extension for extended periods of time. The hamstrings, hip flexors and pecs are all shortened; while the quadriceps and glutes are the main power generators. All of these movement patterns may result in muscle imbalances if a cyclist doesn’t stretch and strengthen accord-ingly.

For a cyclist, stretching through a full range of motion makes a lot of sense. But so does strengthening the muscles that are less active in order to prevent muscle imbalances. Some would argue, it’s not re-ally about flexibility at all. The issue is that overused muscles become strong, but tight and shortened, while the opposing, inactive, muscles become weaker and loose. And those experts argue that this is the real issue behind the debate over flexibility and stretching for athletes.

Is Flexibility Overrated? - Flexibility and Stretching In the Real World

So, now that you are thoroughly confused about flexibility for ath-letes, what should you do? Here are some points to consider when deciding what, and how much, you need to stretch:

• Every joint has an ideal range of motion in order to maintain stabil-ity while moving freely.

• Too much ROM in a joint can be as undesirable as too little ROM because it decreases joint stability.

• Strive for balanced flexibility on the right and left sides of the body and in opposing muscle groups and adjacent joints.

• If your ROM is far from the norms, consider strengthening the loose areas and stretching the tight areas.

• Many athletes benefit from increasing strength and stability in the core (lumbar spine, pelvis and glutes) as well as the shoulder joint.

• Many athletes benefit from increasing range of motion in the tho-racic spine and shoulder girdle (scapula), the hip joint and the ankles.

• Static stretching, if performed, should be done after exercise. • Use a dynamic warm up prior to exercise.

So, while overall stretching may feel great after your workouts or in a yoga class, the real benefits of stretching may be related to a more focused approach that strives to maintain appropriate range of motion around specific joints. I would also argue that stretching or releasing tight muscles should go hand in hand with strengthening the weak ones.

FLMX: Davi, Congrats on bringing out the Davi Millsaps who knew existed! How would you sum up the first part of the 2013 SX Season? DM: The first part has gone really well so far just trying to worry about one race at a time every single weekend but I am definitely excited about the first 8 rounds.

FLMX: A1 was an incredible race with you and Trey. How was the race and what was it like winning the opener? DM: The race was a lot of fun it was a 20 lap battle between trey and I and when he passed me I was able to change up my lines and find a place to get him back. But winning the first race was amazing its something I have always wanted to do being it’s the biggest race of the year it was special to me, my family and the whole team.

FLMX: What happened in this off season that brought you to the top of your game? DM: Well being on a new team, the Rock Star Energy Racing Team, a new bike and being able to ride it early and be prepared for the season was probably the biggest thing for me I would say.

FLMX: Would you credit becoming a Dad and seeing the op-portunities that are in front of you to start being on the top of your game and knowing that you have to perform to provide for your family? DM: I mean yes of course being a dad is definitely a lot of moti-

vation because I want to do the best I can for him and provide for him and my family.

FLMX: How is the new team and the Suzukis?DM: I love my bike every day I get to ride it I have fun on it and to me that’s a lot of motivation as well.

FLMX: Your team isn’t a Factory Suzuki effort, but now that you are the points leader have they started helping out? DM: I don’t know that answer to be honest That would be a ques-tion for higher management.

FLMX: You have became strong for the entire 20 laps, you look comfortable and happy. What is the outlook and plan for the rest of the series? DM: Just take it one race at a time and just go out and do my best and try to put myself in good positions to be able to be up front.

FLMX: You grew up in the Orlando area and raced all of the FL scene. What was it like growing up in FL and who were your rivals?DM: I liked growing up in FL, it was fun and the tracks were good too but rivals if you mean from FL I would say Chisholm pretty much the whole time.

FLMX: You won everything in the amateurs and when you turned Pro at a very young age with Suzuki you had a lot of pressure on

you. How were those years early on? DM: Yeah there was a lot of pressure for sure but those years were fun they were learning years I was so young and didn’t re-ally know how to go about everything so I just tried to make it as fun as possible.

FLMX: You have always had great rides and could win when it was all aligned. What were some of your greatest highlights as a Pro?DM: Definitely my first pro win then the east west shoot out win, then my championship, my first 450 win, and then Anaheim 1.

FLMX: Where are you living and training at now?DM: I live mostly in Cali and ride and train there but right now I am in GA riding and training at my place over here.

FLMX: To a lot of people you probably seem like a veteran but your still pretty young. How old are you and how long do you want to keep going?DM: I am 25 and I plan on going as long as I can.

FLMX: Keep up all of the great work and we are rooting for you. Who would you like to thank? 2013 AMA SUPERCROSS SERIESROUND 5 ANAHEIM, CA 02.02.13

SIX12 RaceTech Race RepoRtSX traveled to Anaheim for the 3rd and final time in the first weekend of February with Davi Millsaps as points leader. RV had moved into the 2nd spot in points and was looking to close in on him some more in the standings. As the gate dropped in the 450 class for the heat race the story was Ryan Dung-eys KTM 450. WP and KTM have been developing a new Air Shock for Dungey. With their testing in the off season and through the first 4 races Dungey has liked the shock and had no problems. Well, the problems came in a big way on the line in the heat race as the seal let go and allowed air to leak from the shock and cause the shock to sag down to nothing. The fender was sitting on the tire, Dungey was headed to the LCQ. In the LCQ, with a spring coil shock, Dungey ran into more problems and was caught up in a huge pileup. It would take him until the last lap to get around Phil Nicoletti and place 2nd, and the last gate pick for the Main.

At the start of the Main it was Mike Alessi with the holeshot on his MotoConcepts Suzuki, Chad Reed would cause a huge pileup in turn 3 collecting some of the top riders. This allowed Ryan Dungey, who swept the outside on the start, to take over the 2nd spot and go after Alessi. All of a sudden the rider with all the prob-lems was 1st! Millsaps was putting in a solid ride and started showing Dungey a wheel, but then it was James Stewart who go around Millsaps and it was looking like James was back. But by then Dungey was in his groove and pulling away. Stewart would slow his pace down and get passed by Davi and Barcia towards the end. At the finish it was Dungey with a big win and a huge up and down night! Davi extended his points lead on this night at Villopoto had some big problems with going down and finishing in 8th. Reed rode great getting back to 5th after his early crash.

In the 250 class Main Event it was KTM’s 1-2 as Joey Savatgy had the holeshot over Ken Roczen. Roczen would get around him quickly though, followed by Martin Davalos. Davalos would keep him close for around half the race, within 1.5 seconds, but after that it was Roczen stretching it out more and taking the win. With that he would extend his points lead even more over Eli Tomac. omac suffered a bad start and had to come through the pack and finished 3rd.

2013 AMA SUPERCROSS SERIESROUND 6 SAN DIEGO, CA 02.09.13

San Diego, CA hosted the 6th Round of the 2013 SX Series. This would be the last CA race this year, and the last West Coast 250 Class for a few months as the series is about to head East. The big ques-tion leading up to the race was still, Is Davi Millsaps for real? Well that question has been answered, with many exclamation marks!!!! YES!!!!!!!!! Davi took the holeshot in the Main Event in front of Chad Reed, who has won the San Diego SX 5 times leading into the race, you could say he really likes this place… Chad was pressuring Davi early and it looked like the old Chad was back. That was until around lap 5 when Davi started to pull away and Chad would start getting a lot of pressure from Barcia. Justin Barcia would find his way around him and start going after Davi. Davi and Barcia would put some time on the battle for 3rd as Dungey was being Mr Nice Guy to Chad, that was until he knew he was much faster and put an aggressive pass on Chad for 3rd.

Barcia had his sights on Davi, but Davi is just riding too good. Making no mistakes, one rider who was making mistakes was the defending Champ Ryan Villopoto, who suffered from a bad start and then a crash, which regulated him to 6th on the night. Davi would ride a strong perfect race on his Rockstar Suzuki 450 holding off Barcia and taking home his 2nd win of the season and extending his points lead to 19 points now over Ryan Dungey, who was 3rd at the end of the race. James Stewart put in a solid ride finishing up in 4th, not what he wanted but it was getting better. Chad would fade to 5th.

In the 250 Class it was RockStar Suzuki’s Jason Anderson with the holeshot, but was passed quickly by Geico Honda’s Eli Tomac. Tomac was ripping as he started pulling away quickly, Roczen knew he had to get around Anderson if he had anything for Tomac and would put a block pass on Anderson to move into 2nd. Tomac had already pulled a good gap though that would be hard to close up. Jason Anderson would hold on strong to 3rd for the remaining of the race to finish up 3rd. On the last lap Roczen would close up the gap on Tomac and was on his rear tire at the finish but would run out of time. Roczen takes a 17 point lead into the break.

REDDICK LL RACE REPORT

LORETTA LYNN AREA QUALIFIER 2013MX OF MARION COUNTY REDDICK, FL 02.16.13

SIX12 RaceTech Race RepoRtA record crowd flooded into MX of Marion County, or Reddick, for the first Loretta Lynn Quali-fier of the year. Reddick kicks off the Loretta Lynn Qualifiers each year for the Southeast. With close to 600 entries in 33 classes the 3 day event would see a lot of great racing from racers all over the country. Not everyone would get a direct qualifying position as the area only guarantees the top 8 riders spots at the Regional. This year the Amateur racers will be traveling to Muddy Creek in Tennesse, while the Youth riders head just 40 miles up the road to Gatorback in Gainesville. Rains threatened all week and the cold came, but the track was solid as the Blackburn Family had it prepped and ready!

Mitchell Harrison put on a performance in the SuperMini 1 & 2 classes aboard his Suzuki. The rider, who lives in Cairgo, GA now went 1-1 in Supermini 1 over Ramyller Alves, who is also aboard a Suzuki, while the WMR KTM rider of Jordan Bailey rounded out the top 3, going 3-4. Harrison kept the win streak alive by win-ning both motos in the Supermini 2 (13-16) class. Tanner Stack, from Oak Grove, MO, was 2nd overall with a 2-2 tally on his Kawasaki. Alves went 3-4 for 3rd overall. In the Mini SR. classes it was Enzo Lopes and Jordan Bailey swapping overalls. Bailey won the (12-14) Lim class over Lopes and Jayce Pennington. While Lopes got the best of Bailey in the (12-14) class, with Bailey second and Tanner Stack 3rd. Jalek Swoll, out of Belleview, FL, was unstoppable in the 85 (9-11) classes as he took every moto win ahead of Jarret Frye, Jazzmyn Canfield and James Mcelvain. In the 65cc classes it was Gage Linville topping the 65 (7-11) and the 65 (7-9) divisions proving he will be a top contender in Gainesville come June.

In the Pro and A classes RJ Hampshire started off the week great on his new Honda’s by winning the Open Pro Sport class over Hayden Hellross and Jace Owen. Hellross would get some revenge in the 450 A class by taking the win over Owen and Hampshire this time. Cody Chisholm took home the 250 A class on his Team Green Kawasaki in front of Hellross and Hampshire. Nicholas Ferrell, from Townsend, DE, would win 3 out of 4 motos, but took both overalls in the 450 B classes. His only 2nd place finish was by the hands of Darian Sanayei, from Monroe, WA, who won the first moto of 450 B. Sanayei would end up 2nd in the B

2013 DADE CITY MX CHAMPIONSHIPROUND 2 DADE CITY, FL 02.09.13

SIX12 RaceTech Race RepoRtThe Dade City MX Championship Series kicked into gear the first 2 weeks of February. Round 1 would see a return of a lot of great riders as the rider count was over 300. Round 1 saw the Vortex Lites class hold the spotlight as the main class of the night, which was won by DJ MacFarlane, who made the race boring by getting the hole-shot and speeding off to a easy win. Round 2, which would actually be the first race of the new Sponsorcup. What is different you ask? A lot! All riders must by on a 250cc machine, either 4 Stroke or 2. No 450’s allowed this year. The races will also we lining up single file, inverted from the way the points or 1st moto would be. The top 8 would get paid, and the points leader, who started last, would get $10 extra for every pass he made on the field.

Moto 1 would have the racers leave the normal gate, because their was not a set field yet of a points leader, and it was RJ Hampshire get-ting out to the lead early as Ruffner had the holeshot, but Hampshire would sweep the outside in turn 2. RJ was GONE! No one was catch-ing him as he rode smooth and consistent to an easy win. Guessford would be up near the front early, but his bike had a mechanical and would DNF. AJ Meadows would find his way into the #2 spot aboard his Williams Performance Honda. Ian Millett, on his Huss Drilling/Sen-try Sprockets Yamaha 250 2 Stroke was riding great and put his bike on the podium. 2 Time Sponsors Cup Champ, Xtreme Powersports Mike Picone, would fall in the first turn and have to pass a lot of riders to get into 5th and struggle with his bike as the steering stem broke!

In Moto 2 the riders would line up inverted! Guessford would start 1st, as he had a DNF and was last place finisher. Hampshire would start last, with around 12 people on the line, he had his work cut out for him. As the riders placed their right hand on their helmet, the started would blow a horn to start the race and it was on! Guessford, who is going FAST right now would speed off to a big lead while Hampshire and Picone would be blitzing through the pack and found themselves in 2nd and 3rd within 2 laps. The leaders would reel in Guessford and

start a 3 way battle for the lead! Hampshire, Picone, Guessford would battle for a few laps swapping the lead until the pace was too much for Guessford. Picone and Hampshire went at it for the 10 lap 2nd moto, with some amazing block passes, line choices and speed. Hampshire looked to be faster and had the pass made a few times, but Picone would come right back to take the lead. It was Picone winning moto 2 over Hampshire and Guessford finishing 3rd. RJ would get the overall and take the points lead into round 2 for this class.
