The Dutchess CountyRegional Chamber of Com-merce extends a helping

hand back to the community: theforesight of our Chamber Execu-tive leadership has led to the de-velopment, growth and prosperityof the Dutchess County RegionalChamber of Commerce Founda-tion, also known as the ChamberFoundation.

The Chamber will always bean advocate for hundreds of areanot-for-profits, and the ChamberFoundation is a fine example ofwhat our organization does tofoster non-profit organizations andcommunity growth. Developedto promote education and trainingprograms, the Foundation hasestablished eleven scholarships, aYouth Leadership program, collegecampus tours, and LeadershipDutchess. These scholarships andprograms ensure the enrichmentof our Hudson Valley residentsand offers opportunity to furthertheir education. We all know thatknowledge is power, and the Foun-dation is a model of practicingwhat is preached; through assistingindividuals of all ages with the po-tential to succeed and become thefuture leaders of our region.

If you know someone who

is making the move from highschool to college, or would like tofurther their education, and needstuition assistance – the Founda-tion can offer much needed fi-nancial assistance to achieve theireducational goals. Some scholar-ships the Chamber Foundationoffers are in the following areas:Engineering, Culinary Arts, Busi-ness, Manufacturing and Trade,Fashion, Nursing, Music andmore. The scholarships, Leader-ship Dutchess and the YouthLeadership Program are all madepossible through the generosityof private and corporate dona-tions, as well as fundraising fromspecial events such as; the AthenaAwards, the Chamber FoundationBowling Tournament, AnnualDay of Golf, Cosimo DiBrizziCelebrity Server Dinner, and mypersonal favorite - the TwistedGala. The Twisted Gala is not forthose wanting a romantic blacktie evening on the town – it is areverse drawing with a grand prizeof…a Harley Davidson. Nowyou’re talking!

This organization certainly hastaken a shape the community canembrace, none of which would havebeen possible without the leader-ship of Charles North and Audra

Gerty, President and Vice Presidentof the Foundation. Audra’s vision toexpand the Foundation has becomeone of the proudest, and mostcommendable, achievements of theChamber Foundation and DutchessCounty Regional Chamber of Com-merce. While both the Chamberand the Foundation have separateBoards of Directors, a great dealof the credit and kudos for this ac-complishment is due to Mr. North,Audra and Karolyn Osborne, Direc-tor of the Chamber Foundation.

Several months now pastthe traditional givingseason, it’s important to

remember those less fortunateas well as the numerous non-profit organizations in theHudson Valley region.

There are many organiza-tions around that give gener-ously, but none more than theDyson Foundation. At theforefront of philanthropy, theDyson Foundation awards anaverage of $17 million in grantseach year, much of it in Dutchessand the surrounding counties ofthe Mid-Hudson Valley.

Non-profit organizationsmake up a significant part ofour economy, adding jobs andservices to our great region. And the Dyson Foundationplays a large part in supportingtheir work.

They also fund a comprehen-sive study called Many Voices,One Valley, produced with theMarist Institute of Public Opin-ion. The third such study is dueout later in 2012. This demo-graphic information provides agreat view of our economy andhelps us all learn about spendinghabits, allowing area businessesto get to know more about theirpotential customers.

There is also a tremen-dous opportunity for the BabyBoomer generation to transfertheir wealth and help allocate aportion of their estates to localfoundations. A recent studycommissioned by the Commu-nity Foundations of the HudsonValley, found that if just 5% wereallocated to local foundations, the result would be an additional$55 million in annual giving.

It’s important to not onlyrealize what organizations likethe Dyson Foundation andCommunity Foundations of theHudson Valley do, but to helpin whatever ways we all can toemulate these organizations.

The economy has shownsigns of coming back, but thereare still many people and organi-zations helping them in need ofour support. Please be generouswith your money but also withyour time. Remember … givelocal first.

Sincerely,

Charles S. NorthPresident & CEO

Review, update your processesWe all have processes

that we follow day-inand day-out that help

us complete our assigned taskswithin our particular departmentor office. Most of the time we don’teven think about the process itselfbecause we’re so used to followingthese specifics steps that they be-come almost second-nature.

However, every now and thenbusinesses should be reviewingthe processes they have in place tosee if there are ways they can makeimprovements that equal betterproduction or lower costs. Withtechnology for the business com-munity changing so rapidly, theremay also be an opportunity to auto-mate some of these processes.

Here are some key insights tokeep in mind if you think you’rein a position to review and updateyour processes:

• Don’t forget there’s a biggerpicture – Make sure you and yourstaff have a clear understanding ofwhere the business is supposed to goin the future. When you start to lookat individual processes, it is very easyto lose sight of your future goals, andyou’ll waste time and energy im-proving/automating processes thatmight not even be necessary as youmove toward your vision.

• Don’t go too far – You maynot actually need to automateor improve every single pro-cess. Take your processes one ata time, try out a new approach

and after you’ve tested it and seenthe results, make a decision if it’sworth updating. If the outcomeisn’t leaps and bounds above theoutput you were already getting,it may be time to move on to an-other process.

• Feedback from all areas isimportant – In order to under-stand what truly should or needsto be done differently within yourcompany, you need to hear fromeveryone who plays a part in yourcurrent process and get a consensuson what would help improve it so itcan be more efficient or profitable.

“We are extremely gratefulto be a leader in Honda’s NewEngland Region and to sell morecars and trucks than any otherdealership in the Hudson Valleydespite the significant shortageof Hondas last year,” said EricKahn, Owner of Friendly Honda.“Though 80 percent of Hondassold in the U.S. are manufacturedhere, the supply of Hondas waslimited due to a shortage of a fewparts sourced from Japan andThailand, which both experiencednatural disasters last year. Hondacontinues to provide great prod-ucts with exceptional value andwe continue to strive to give ourcustomers a truly unique dealer-ship experience. Now that we arefinally receiving a normal supplyof Hondas, we’re very optimisticabout sales in 2012.”

“the Chamber has transformed me from a groomerthat owns a business to a business woman that grooms. When i really started to work the Chamber by attendingthe events and joining a committee, many doors startedto open. By attending networking events, i learned howto shake hands, where to put your name badge, howto do an elevator speech and network. By being partof the Ambassador Committee, i learned how to conduct a business meetingand how you can start with just an idea and transform it into a new projector program. the latest benefit of the Chamber is that by attending their socialnetworking seminars, i have become social networking savvy. those are onlya few of the many things i have learned from being part of the Chamber. ilove the chamber staff because they make things happen. i really look for-ward to 2012 and the many new exciting things planned at the Chamber.”

to the success of the YouthLeadership program is ex-

Each year, the 11th grade stu-dents from the Youth Leadershipprogram are tasked with assistingin the planning of a Career Night, where over 30 business and profes-sional leaders participate in round-table discussions with students todiscuss career and life strategies. This event is extremely useful forstudents as they benefit from talk-ing to members of the businesscommunity and become aware ofa number of different occupationalfields, the education required andwhat it takes to get them there.

Help us make our Career Nighta success for our Youth Leadershipstudents! Students are currentlyseeking more business profession-als from areas of work such in Me-

Anyone interested in donatingfood or conducting your own fooddrive should contact Carol Beckat (845) 454-3792 or visit www.dutchessoutreach.org for more in-formation.

the Gap supports communityIt’s easy to assume that “Think

Local First” means to supportonly businesses owned by peo-

ple in the Hudson Valley, but that’sa shortsighted view. At its core, thinking local first means to pa-tronize those companies that careabout you and where you live, andthat’s a trait not limited to smallbusinesses.

Take The Gap for instance.Though based in San Francisco, they’re proud members of theDutchess County Regional Cham-ber of Commerce, and extremelyactive in the Hudson Valley com-munity. Built on the legacy of theirfounders, Doris and the late DonFisher, Gap takes pride in beingable to give back to those com-munities where are businesses arelocated and where our people calltheir homes. The Gap, through

their enormous distribution cen-ter just off I-84 in Fishkill and as-sociated not-for-profit organiza-tion The Gap Foundation, pumpshundreds of thousands of dollarsinto the Hudson Valley every year. They’re among the largest corpo-rate supporters of The ChamberFoundation, Inc., and have re-cently committed to raising at least$75,000 in order to build a housein the Hudson Valley for HabitatFor Humanity among their manyother charitable efforts.

The Gap is a community-committed organization that livesby their Foundation’s motto of “BeWhat’s Possible.” It serves as theircall to arms. They are passionateand proud of their involvement inthe community and look forwardto many more years of involvementin the Hudson Valley and beyond.

With a focus on youth in thedeveloped world and women in thedeveloping world, The Gap Foun-dation’s mission is to create op-portunities that unleash potential,a mission that is made even morepowerful by the work they do tosupport their non-profit partnersand employee volunteers.
