OPEN LETTERAs a new Chairperson of BRLL 2011 Philippine Independence Day

Celebration (PIDC) and in behalf of newly elected officers, I would like to say “Thank You” for all who supported us on our 1st Kabayan Nights (A Fund Raising for this year’s 113th Philippine Independence Day Celebration) that was held at Mabuhay Garden last Saturday, 26th of February 2011. You have no idea how it means a lot to me. It would not be possible without the help of my co-officers, volunteers, food sponsors / donations and last but not the least, all of the people who came by and support us that night.

Kabayan Night was really a successful one, the crowd was really energetic and we all knew that they are always there to support us no matter what. We did not expect a big crowd as that as we launching that event. Kabayan Night supposed to be once a month event (last Saturday of each month), but  due to a lot of requests that we gathered, we are going to pursue to do it twice a month (2nd and 4th week of each month) until May 2011. The Kabayan Nights also showcases the different talents of Filipino’s working in this good community.

As a newly elected officers, we have a lot of fundraising events, plans and projects for this year (2011) such as Food Sale, Kabayan Nights, Car Wash, Bowling Tournament, Garage Sale, 5K Run are just few projects lined up. We are looking forward for your continuous and generous supports on all of our activities.

Once again, a BIG THANK YOU to all of you.Mabuhay Tayong Lahat…..Filipino Freedom: Our Pride, Our Glory

Mr. Yatar was born was born December 7, 1958 in Aklan, Philippines. He received Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (BSCE) from Columban College, Olongapo City, Philippines in 1981. He started working for the US Navy at the Naval Air Station, Cubi Point, and Subic Bay, Philippines in August of 1979 and ended his long career working in support of the US Navy in March of 2010. Below lists the dates and bases he worked in career working for the Navy and other services.

In his thirty nine years of service to the Navy, Toto gave more then 100%. He may have been small in stature but he was huge in heart, loyalty, and willingness to get any job done or help any person he could along the way. Anyone who has ever shipped anything in or out of Guantanamo Bay knew Toto, he was always the "go to” person. He was always quick and positive in his help to anyone who needed his assistance or knowledge. He shared his vast knowledge with all and taught new people how to work inventory in UDAPS or how to fill out

shipping documents. He was a long time member of the Masons. He did not hesitate to help support the various ethnic communities in GTMO. He was always ready to offer a helping hand to the people he worked with in his day time and part time jobs. He worked closely with the staff and residents in his part time job at Gold Hill. Of special note was his support to the Cuban community. He went out of his way to help these people who he had shared GTMO with for almost 30 years. Mailing things to those who had moved to the States and helping those on the Base here on GTMO.

Toto did not intend to retire. He went home on vacation last year in March. Like many of us, he thought he would have at least another seven years of work here in GTMO. Unfortunately, he started having kidney problems after he reached home. He has been fighting this ever since in hopes that he would get well. Always a positive person, he could not accept that his heath was failing. In February, he was hospitalized and found out that both his kidneys had failed. The only course of action is dialysis and this costs money. The men of the Storage and Warehouse contract are working to help Toto. We ask everyone for their support in praying for this exceptional person.

How To Prevent Slips, Trips And Falls In Your Facility Because they cause more than their share of strains, sprains, contusions, fractures and back

injuries in the workplace, slips, trips and falls should be among the priorities in your safety and health program. One back injury can keep a worker out of commission for a long time. This can have a significant impact in terms of productivity and the bottom line.

Workers can fall to a lower level or even to the same level and suffer some painful injuries. Floors, platforms and stairways often become slippery. Employees have also been known to trip over boxes, electrical cords, equipment or other items that are left in aisles and walkways. In other cases, floors may be uneven or have depressions, shallow holes or uncovered drains that cause employees to trip.

Falls to a lower level can be more serious. They might be the result of stairways with missing rails or treads, or a riser height that is not uniform. Elevated work surfaces may not have guardrails or toeboards. The distance between rungs on portable ladders may not be uniform, the ladders may not be equipped with non-slip safety feet or employees may not be trained in the safe use of ladders.

10 Ways To Prevent Slips, Trips and FallsHere are a few ways employers and employees can help prevent slips, trips and falls:

✓Clean up spills as quickly as possible.

✓Provide non-slip surfaces on floors that will be wet.

✓Use slip-resistant footwear.

✓Keep aisles and passageways clear of obstructions and tripping hazards.

✓Make surer aisles are wide enough for their intended use.

✓Make sure stairs have proper handrails, that treads and rises are maintained and that treads have a slip-resistant surface.

✓Make sure elevated storage and work surfaces have guardrails, toe board and a permanent means of access.

✓Make sure that floor drains are covered by grates.

✓Maintain ladders with uniformly-spaced rungs and non-slip safety feet in good condition.

✓Train employees in the safe use of ladders.Safety Department

Are You Anxious About The Future? After this, the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision: “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward.” But Abram said, “Sovereign LORD, what can you give me since I remain childless and the one who will inherit my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?” And Abram said, “You have given me no children; so a servant in my household will be my heir.” Then the word of the LORD came to him: “This man will not be your heir, but a son who is your own flesh and blood will be your heir.” He took him outside and said, “Look up at the sky and count the stars—if indeed you can count them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” Abram believed the LORD, and he credited it to him as righteousness. (NIV) Genesis 15:1-6

Abram, the great pillar of faith, is anxious. He is worried about what will become of him and his family. What is most remarkable is that his anxiety is prompted by a vision in which the Lord tells Abram not to be afraid for the Lord will protect and reward him.

Specifically, Abram is worried about the future. He is afraid that all his efforts and hard work will come to nothing, for he has no children to inherit his estate. His legacy will not live on among his descendants.

The Lord tells Abram that he will not remain childless. An heir will be born to him. Moreover, the Lord promises Abram that his descendants will be as numerous as the stars in the sky. Abram is assured that his legacy will live on.

Note, however, that Abram is given a promise that he will never see fulfilled. He will not live to see these accomplishments. All he is given is a promise. All Abram can do in response to what the Lord has promised him is to reply, “I believe You.”

Like Abram, we too may be anxious about the future. We may not worry about the lineage, but we nonetheless fret if our lives will come to nothing. Will our work make contribution to future generations or prove futile?

INSPIRATIONAL WORDS Despite our best efforts the future always remains out of our control. Like Abram, we too must placed our hope in a future that we will never live to see fulfilled. We too have only God’s words of promise to assure us.

Prayer: Lord, we are anxious about the future. Help us to trust You. Amen!

IMPORTANT REMINDER

Please keep in mind that every cash withdrawal from your bank account that is done in the Philippines results in a $1.50 transaction fee plus a Visa charge of 1% of the transaction amount. For example, if $20 is withdrawn in the PI, a $1.70 additional charge is made ($1.50 + $.20).

Community Bank will charge a $20 overdraft fee, even if the account is overdrawn by just a few cents. In the example above, if the employee had a balance of $21 in his account, this $20 withdrawal would result in a balance of ($.70) and a $20 fee would be charged.

Recommendation: If there will be cash withdrawals made in the PI, keep a minimum balance of $5 or $6 in the account to cover these fees and protect you from an overdraft fee.

BAGONG BAYANI NG BAYANOverseas Filipino Workers take a considerable amount of risk when they travel abroad. Overseas

Filipino Worker sacrifice a lot in order to give a better life for their families. They are heroes in their own right because they live to help their families and sometimes even other people they do not even know but are in need of their help and support.

What are overseas workers like made of? They are made up of determination, courage, a risk taking attitude, a heart of gold and a lot more intangibles that make them as everyday heroes to a lot of people. They go beyond their call of duty to help their families, to help their country and sometimes people in need even if it means putting him or herself in danger.

You do not have to be an overseas worker like an OFW to be a hero, you are a hero if you sacrifice a part of yourself to help other people who are in need. You are a hero if you can make someone else smile despite the trials and challenges they have. You are a hero if you can make others feel better about themselves. If you do that then you are a hero in that person’s heart.
