    Visitor Spending Up for March and First Quarter 2010

    Maui Led Growth in Visitor Spending and Arrivals

    HONOLULU Total expenditures by visitors who came by air in March 2010 rose 12.7percent from the same month last year to $874.2 million, boosted by increased arrivalsand higher daily visitor spending, according to preliminary statistics released today by theHawaii Tourism Authority. For the first quarter of 2010, total spending by air visitors

    grew by $130.1 million to $2.7 billion, or 5 percent higher compared to year-to-date 2009.

    Among the major islands, Maui led the growth in visitor spending (+25.2%, to $257.7million), and arrivals (+14.2%). Contributing to these strong gains were new air servicesadded in March 2010 to Maui from Edmonton, Calgary, Orange County, Los Angeles,San Jose and Sacramento and new routes to Maui that began in late 2009.

    In total, there were 607,709 air and cruise visitors in March 2010, up 9.3 percent from lastMarch. All top four visitor markets showed gains in arrivals by air compared to March2009: Canada (+17.3%), U.S. West (+9.2%), U.S. East (+7.9%) and Japan (+6.5%).

    In addition, first quarter 2010 results showed exceptional growth in visitor arrivals fromOther Asia (+48.6%), in particular Korea (+90.8%) and China (+23.4%), compared to firstquarter 2009.

    Additional Total Air Visitor Highlights:

    The 12.7 percent growth in total expenditure for the month of March 2010 was thelargest since April 2006 (+15.6%). Contributing to this increase was a 10.2 percentgrowth in arrivals by air to 596,969 visitors and higher average daily spending ($164

    per person compared to $158 per person in March 2009).

    For the first quarter of 2010, total visitor days by air and cruise visitors increased 4.3percent while total arrivals rose 4.1 percent from the same period last year to1,671,540 visitors.

    The Easter holiday was in the first week of April 2010 so visitors who came for SpringBreak came in March contributing to the increased in visitors to the state.

    The total number of independent travelers in March 2010 rose 11.1 percent comparedto last March. Significantly more Japanese visitors traveled independently (+30.9%)while independent travelers from the U.S. West (+9.7%), U.S. East (+7.5%) andCanada (+11.7%) also increased.

    The total number of visitors who came to honeymoon in March 2010 rose 7.9 percentcompared to a year ago with growth from Japan (+1.6%), Canada (+55.3%) and othervisitors (+60.8%). Total honeymoon visitors have continued to increase since October2009.

    Significantly more Japanese (+32.3%) and Canadian (+182.7%) visitors came to getmarried in March 2010, boosting the total number of get-married visitors by 19.3percent from March 2009.

    Fewer total visitors came for conventions (-13.3%) in March 2010 as growth inconventioneers from Japan (+41.2%) were offset by decreases from U.S. West

    (-10.8%), U.S. East (-13.3%) and Canada (-40.6%). All accommodations benefitted from increased total visitor traffic during the month of

    March 2010 including hotels (+13.1%), condominium properties (+10.8%), timeshare(+4.1%), friends/relatives (+2.9%) and bed and breakfast properties (+5.2%).

    Major Marketing Areas:

    U.S. West:

    Growth in visitor arrivals (+9.2%) and higher average daily spending ($139 per person,from $133 per person in March 2009) elevated total spending by U.S. West visitors(+12.8%) to $291.6 million for the month of March 2010.

    In March 2010 arrivals from the Pacific region rose 10.2 percent with increases fromCalifornia (+13.4%), Alaska (+8.1%), Oregon (+6.9%) and Washington (+4.8%).Arrivals from the Mountain region were also higher (+5.6%) compared to last March.

    For the first quarter of 2010, total expenditures by U.S. West visitors grew 5.8 percentto $873.2 million. Total visitors days (+3.1%) and visitor arrivals (+3.1%) were up.

    U.S. East:

    Total spending from U.S. East visitors in March 2010 rose 12.1 percent to $224.7million, thanks to increases in arrivals (+7.9%) and average daily spending ($158 perperson, compared to $150 per person in March 2009).

    Arrivals from the top U.S. East regions of East North Central (+6.3%) rose comparedto March 2009, while the South Atlantic (+15.2%) led by growth from Virginia (+18.6%)also increased. Arrivals from Middle Atlantic (+23.5%) - particular New Jersey(+34.4%) and New York (+24.9%) - rose by double digits. Arrivals from the WestNorth Central (+7.7%) region were also higher compared to last March.

    However, for the first quarter of 2010, arrivals from the East South Central (-9.8%),New England (-5.9%) and East North Central (-2.2%) showed declines compared tofirst quarter 2009.

    Japan:

    Much of the growth in Japanese arrivals in March 2010 continued to be from Net TrueIndependent (FIT) travelers which climbed 30.9 percent from last March. This was theninth consecutive month of increased growth since July 2009.

    Despite the 6.5 percent growth in arrivals, total expenditures by Japanese visitors fell3 percent to $155.5 million in March 2010. The decline was largely due to a lowerdaily spending by these visitors ($244 per person) compared to $268 per person inMarch 2009. A higher proportion of FIT visitors which generally had a lower dailyspending contributed to this decrease.

    For the first quarter of 2010, total spending by Japanese visitors dropped 10.6 percentto $429 million. Average daily spending was $254 per person, down from $291 perperson in the first quarter of 2009. Japanese visitor arrivals grew 3 percent.

    Significantly more Japanese visitors in the first quarter of 2010 stayed in timeshareproperties (+47.8%) and more also stayed in condominium properties (+9.9%)compared to the same period last year.

    Canada:

    The 17.3 percent increase in Canadian arrivals for March 2010 was the third month ofconsecutive double digit increases for this market. February through August 2008was the last time that growth in Canadian arrivals was so strong.

    Strong growth in visitor arrivals boosted total spending by Canadian visitors (+7.1%) to$81.8 million in March 2010 even though daily spending by these visitors were lower($132 per person) compared to March 2009 ($138 per person).

    For the first quarter of 2010, total spending by visitors from Canada increased 15.7percent to $282.9 million thanks to a 17.1 percent growth in visitor arrivals.

    All visitor accommodations saw much heavier traffic from Canadian visitors, especiallycondominium properties which jumped 20.1 percent from first quarter 2009. Hotels

    March 2010 visitor arrivals rose on Oahu (+9.5%) and Kauai (+8.2%) and wasespecially strong on Maui (+14.2%), the third consecutive month of increase for thisisland. Even more visitors stayed exclusively on Maui (+17.5%) compared to March2009.

    For the first quarter of 2010, all major islands saw growth in total visitor arrivals led byMaui (+8%), then Oahu (+2.8%), Kauai (+2.2%) and Hawaii Island (+1.4%)compared to the same period last year.

    Total visitor spending for the month of March 2010 also increased on all major islands:Oahu (+11% to $419.6 million), Maui (+25.2% to $257.7 million), Hawaii Island

    (+3.2% to $104.6 million) and Kauai (+3.2% to $86.7 million) compared to last March.

    For the first quarter of 2010, total visitor spending on Oahu (+1.9% to $1.3 billion),Maui (+12.6% to $774 million) and Hawaii Island (+7.7% to $363.1 million) increasedbut total spending on Kauai (-0.8% to $264.3 million) declined slightly compared toyear-to-date 2009.

    For the first quarter of 2010, Maui saw positive arrival growth from all four top visitormarkets that outpaced the statewide results for these markets.

    For the first quarter 2010, Hawaii Island and Oahu saw increases in arrivals fromCanada and Japan but visitors from U.S. West and U.S. East were lower on theseislands.

    Arrivals to Kauai from Canadian visitors were exceptionally strong (+24.3%) and U.S.West visitations also increased (+1%) but Japanese arrivals (-9.2%) to this island waslower compared to first quarter 2009.

    Total Air Seats to Hawaii Total air seats for March 2010 rose 6.6 percent from last March. All major island

    airports saw positive growth in air seats led by Kona (+14%), Lhue (+13%), Kahului(+11.8%), and Honolulu (+4%).

    Growth in total seats from Canada (+46.2%) was due to new seasonal routes toKahului from: Edmonton (March through April 2010), and additional service fromCalgary (March through April 2010). Increased seasonal service was added (Marchthrough April 2010) to the Calgary to Honolulu route that started in December 2009.There were also continued services from Vancouver, Victoria and Calgary whichbegan in December 2009.

    Total seats from U.S. West grew 3.2 percent from March 2009, mainly due toincreases on the neighbor islands. On Maui, new routes to Kahului were added inMarch 2010 from Orange County, Sacramento and San Jose. On Hawaii Islandthere was a new route to Kona from San Jose. There were also continued serviceswhich started in late 2009 to Kahului from Oakland and Los Angeles; to Kona fromOakland; and more flights out of Los Angeles to Kahului and Lhue.

    Total seats from U.S. East increased from 11.4 percent from last March due to anadditional weekend flight out of Dallas to Kahului in addition to the daily flight. Therewere also continued services from Charlotte to Honolulu (December 2009 -September 2010).

    Seats from Japan rose 10.8 percent from March 2009 as two airlines switched tolarger planes with more seats on the Tokyo to Honolulu route.

    Partially offsetting these increases were fewer seats from Other Asia (-2%) due to adiscontinuation of flights from Taipei to Honolulu; and a 1.2 percent decrease fromseats from Oceania.

    For the first quarter of 2010, statewide air seats increased 4.6 percent with more seatsto all major island airports: Lihue (+7.7%), Kahului (+7.4%), Kona (+7.1%) andHonolulu (+3.7%).

    Cruise Ship Visitors:

    A total of 19,834 visitors came by cruise ships or arrived by air to board a Hawaiihome-ported cruise ship in March 2010, down 12.2 percent from last March.

    The number of cruise visitors who came by air to board cruise ships in the islandsgrew 8.1 percent from March 2009, the fourth consecutive month of increase.

    Arrivals by cruise ships in March 2010 fell 24.3 percent from a year ago to 10,740visitors. There were 6 cruise ships in March 2010 compared to 9 ships in March 2009.

    For the first quarter of 2010 a total of 62,547 visitors came by cruise ships or arrivedby air to board a Hawaii home-ported cruise ship, 2.3 percent lower than year-to-date2009. The number of cruise visitors who came by air to board cruise ships in the

    islands increased 12.7 percent from third quarter 2009. Visitors who came by cruiseships decreased 12.4 percent to 33,473 for the first quarter of 2010.

    Visitor Arrivals by Quarter and MMA First Quarter 2010*

    For the first quarter of 2010, a total of 174,123 visitors from markets outside of the topfour visitor markets came to the islands, up 17.9 percent from the same period lastyear.

    Other Asia MMA: Visitors from Other Asia comprised the largest share at 23.1percent of total other. Arrivals from Other Asia climbed 48.6 percent from first quarter

    2009 to 40,224 visitors with very strong increases from Korea (+90.8%) and China(+23.4%).

    Oceania MMA: Arrivals from Oceania totaled 34,131 visitors and made up 19.6percent of total other visitors in the first quarter of 2010. Arrivals from this marketwere also very strong, up 25.7% from first quarter 2009 with increases from Australia(+26.3%) and New Zealand (+19.5%).

    Europe MMA: European (United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, and Switzerland)arrivals totaled 19,185 visitors and accounted for 11 percent of total other visitors.Arrivals from this MMA rose 1.4 percent from first quarter 2009. Arrivals from UnitedKingdom fell 3.5 percent while arrivals from Germany increased 6.1 percent.

    Latin America MMA: Arrivals from Latin America (4,418 visitors) which comprised 2.5percent of total other visitors in the first quarter of 2010 was also up significantly(+23.8%) compared to first quarter 2009 with increases from Brazil (+26.5%) andMexico (+24.3%).
