curriculum, philosophy and activities offered. Educational Services Division Website and Newsletter Our Educational Services Division has undertaken a new initiative by creating a website and by publishing a Newsletter outlining recent activities carried out by members of the team. The website and Newsletter can be accessed through the Board website and provide a wealth of information re: curriculum, workshops and resource materials/links for parents and teachers. Administrative Staffing 2010-2011 The administrative staffing process for the 2010-2011 school year has been underway for some time in that current administrators have expressed to me in writing their preferences. In addition, school and centre Governing Boards have provided input to the process by completing the “Criteria for the Principalship” request form. This is always a delicate process in which every effort is made to match the needs of the particular school/centre and community with the strengths and wishes of the candidate under consideration. It is anticipated that any changes will be presented to Council at its April meeting. Consultation re: Governing Board Composition Documentation relating to consultation on the composition of the Governing Board has been sent to all school and centre Governing Boards. The deadline for return is May 14, 2010, in any case in which changes to the current number of members and of composition is being requested. Retirement of Charles “Chuck” Merilees Learning of the retirement request of a valued colleague always brings forth mixed emotions of happiness for the individual and of loss to the system. This was very much the case on receipt of Chuck’s letter. In the period of time we

Teacher Staffing – MSC As part of our staffing process for the 2010-2011 school year, we have been working to determine placements for those members of the

teaching staff who have been affected by the recent Major School Change process. Specific procedures are governed by the Collective Agreement and I must note that the Pearson Teacher’s Union and our Human Resources Department are working together to find placements in the best interests of students and staff. Transportation Review Bus transportation arrangements are being reviewed to develop the network for next year. Modifications are made annually to achieve optimal use of our transportation budget allocation and, this year, to reflect the new pattern resulting from the Major School Change modifications. Special attention is being given to the secondary school network with a view to increasing its efficiency. Deliberations at the PPN and Council level are on-going. An enormous amount of relevant information generated by Mario Barrette, Assistant Director. Marketing and Go Publique Campaign I am sure all are now aware of the marketing campaign underway, sponsored jointly by QESBA and its member school boards, focusing on the benefits of our public schools. Eye-catching billboards, bus signs and other visuals have attracted much attention. In addition, schools and centres have continued to actively recruit. Our school board website www.lbpsb.qc.ca is updated frequently and carries news and events from across the board. Anyone looking for detailed information on a specific school or centre can find answers to questions and a wealth of information re: the

have benefitted from his leadership as part of the Senior Administrative Team, our respect for him and admiration of his abilities have grown immensely. Throughout his career as teacher, in-school administrator at both elementary and secondary levels and here at Head Office, Chuck earned the reputation of a deeply professional educator whose primary interest was always the welfare of the young people under his care. Wherever he was assigned, the honesty of his efforts, his integrity and his commitment to our profession earned for him the accolades of students, colleagues and parents. On behalf of the Lester B. Pearson School Board, I am pleased to extend to Chuck the very best wishes for a wonderful retirement and the deep thanks and appreciation of a grateful community. Retirement of Micheline Jacques Recent days saw the retirement of a long-term member of our School Board community, Micheline Jacques. She has served both the Lakeshore School Board and the Lester B. Pearson School Board with distinction as a teacher and as Executive Assistant with the Pearson Teachers' Union. In her classroom and in her role with PTU, there was never a doubt of her love of our profession and for the children in her care. She served PTU Presidents and the PTU membership with energy and with integrity and remained always a spokesperson for the students and teachers of the board. Micheline will be missed and we extend to her best wishes for health and happiness through a long and happy retirement. R.T. Mills - Director General

experiment – making butter. The students were divided into groups and took turns shaking a small bottle half-filled with cream for three minutes. By the time the children were finished shaking the bottles, the cream had turned into butter, which amazed them. They then got to spread their newly made treat onto crackers with jam and enjoyed an afternoon snack.

Two kindergarten classes at Greendale Elementary got a special treat on March 16th, when the LBPSB’s Director General Bob Mills taught them how to make butter. Mr. Mills was invited to the school to speak to the students about his past and current career. The children were fascinated to find out that for 16 years, Mr. Mills was a biology teacher. Using his science background he de-cided to have the students par-ticipate in a science

THE COMMUNITY LEARNING CENTRE BRINGS BORN TO READ AND MOTHER GOOSE TIME TO RIVERVIEW

The Riverview Community Learning Centre (CLC) has partnered with the Quebec Federation of Home and School Associations and the Montreal Children’s Library to launch an early literacy and school-readiness initiative. On January 19th the Riverview CLC hosted the Born to Read event where families received free gift bags of books for infants and toddlers to encourage parents to read to their babies. The book bags were graciously donated by the Q.F.H.S.A. Lester B Pearson’s own Lynn Stewart played the role of Mother Goose for the morning, reading a colourful story to the families animated by hand puppets. Parents had the opportunity to socialize while little ones played and snacked. The success of Born to Read made the debut of the Mother Goose Rhyme Time program all the more exciting. Born to Read was a launching pad for the program, which began a week later on January 26th. Mother Goose Rhyme Time, a program run through the Montreal Children’s Library, brings parents and their little ones together

once a week for rhymes, songs, stories and play. It affords parents an opportunity to socialize with other parents while children hone their social skills by interacting with other children. It’s a great way to break social isolation while transferring important skills both to parents and children in preparation for pre-K and kindergarten. The program just completed its third week and parents and children alike are having a great time. Mother Goose is free for families and open to the public, particularly targeting residents of Verdun and the Southwest. While the session is already in full swing we have new families coming weekly and our doors will remain open to other families. For more information contact Riverview CLC coordinator Audrey Ottier at [email protected]. Audrey Ottier - Riverview Community Learning Centre Coordinator

Patricia Staniforth also tried their hand at doing the weather in front of the green screen which serves as the background for the weather segments and the slides get superimposed by the technical people. After the news, the whole group got to take pictures with News Anchors Mutsumi Takahashi, Todd van der Heyden, and weather reporter Miss Lori Graham, on the set of Montreal’s most watched newscast, something which they talked about for several days after. We certainly thank everybody on the CTV News team for their graciousness in taking time to take pictures and answer questions from our students, and our tour guides, consumer reporter Miss

A group of over 20 of our sec 4 students got wide-eyed recently as they paid a visit to the studios of CTV Montreal and a chance for the students to get up close and personal and ask questions of some of Montreal’s well known TV personalities. The students got to see the various pro-duction rooms where the technical stuff gets put together and the famed newsroom where viewers regularly see reporters filing their reports, but the highlight had to be when we sat in live during the 12 noon news package and watched Lori Graham during her weather segments in front of the green screen. CROSS COUNTRY SKI LOPPET AT LES CÈDRES

Five of our elementary schools participated in the Cross Country Ski Loppet held at Les Cèdres on Wednesday February 17, 2010. Students from grade 3 to grade 6 enjoyed a wonderful day of skiing at this superb venue. This loppet is a great opportunity for our students to participate in a fun event that promotes physical fitness and allows them to showcase their skills. Many

thanks to everyone who participated and also to the organizing committee who helped make it a success. Peter Gilson - PEH Consultant

WINTER OLYMPICS AT PURCELL ACADEMY The Olympic Committee worked very hard to organize our winter Olympics. The students enjoyed a week of fun-filled activities. We had opening and closing ceremonies where some students were recognized for their Leadership, Sportsmanship, Team Spirit & Participation skills and a

Future Star Athlete was also awarded. The students helped to reconstruct the Olympic Flag and the grade 5’s were instrumental in creating a life size “Inukshuk” along with teachers; Mme Chandonnet, Ms Borrelli and Ms. Homsy. A special thank you goes out to our fabulous physical education teachers Teresa

Borrelli and Linda Homsy for their hard work and dedication.

Thankfully, the municipality of Saint-Lazare following the Municipal Election didn’t waste any time in guarantying the LBPSB that a site would be found. Our coping skills have been tested. Unfortunately, not without repercussions since we are unable to open the New School for the 2010-2011 school year. This upcoming school year 2 classes of kindergarten students from Forest Hill will have to be housed at Mount Pleasant in Hudson and the grade 5 and grade 6 classes from Pierre Elliott Trudeau will be directed to Westwood Jr. Campus . Can this situation be avoided in the future? That‘s hard to say, since we rely totally on the good will of our

ANGELA NOLET – Ward 20 - Hudson - Vaudreuil-Dorion Email: [email protected] What Can I Say! We have waited with trepidation for this day. Now we can say yes!!!!! Finally we see the light. A spanking

new building to house our students is in sight. Many of us were starting to wonder if we had been cursed by our efforts. To make something happen to serve so many can’t be wrong. Believe me it was definitely a long and unrealistic journey that no one Community should have to endure. To convince municipalities in the Off-Island region to invest in the future of their own citizens should not have been a hard sell.

municipalities to give us land. This is not an expedient way to establish an educational institution especially when the funds are sanctioned very late in the process and obtaining confirmation of this fact is imperative to move forward with our municipalities. Can the process be improved to accommodate school boards in Quebec? We know that there is room for improvement. The present process serves no one. The most affected are those who are the most vulnerable, our students. Bravo!! And thank you to our educators, our parents and our students for making the best of a situation that could have been avoided.

DOUGLAS FLOOK – Ward 1 - Verdun, Nun’s Island Email: [email protected] My association with the Sauvetage Canada Rescue volunteer group (who

participate in Space Day) allowed me at the welcome centre under the Ministère de la sécurité civile to assist those who required help

after returning from Haiti following the earthquake. Whether young or old, tourists arriving in shorts, beach shirts and sandals whose luggage was still under tons of concrete, or those who had been there for longer periods who were returning to friends or family, all showed courage, resilience and patience despite their ordeal. Poignant though the situation was,

there were the occasional moments that seemed surreal, including having to walk our guests through a cocktail party, and a masked formal ball of one of our high schools beside the Sun Youth clothing depot. Despite their experience, many spoke of returning once things had improved, to help in the long-term recovery effort that will be needed. I am grateful to have met them.

OLYMPIC DAY AT SUNSHINE ACADEMY On February 26th, Sunshine Academy had an Olympic Celebration. At the opening assembly, each class represented a different country and entered the gymnasium with their country’s flag. Everyone stood to sing “O Canada”, then had warm-up activities before the events. The events that the students participated in included: gym activities, musical chairs, face painting, story time, step

classes, arts & crafts, and a friendly game of floor hockey against the staff. Thank you to our PPO, who provided hot chocolate and snacks. It was a wonderful way to end the day before our March break. Go Sunshine, go!

Where do our police officers get the time to be so good at volleyball? That’s right! Police officers from Station 13 came over to the school on Tuesday Feb. 9th and beat both the students and staff. Led by our Community Officer, Giovanni Dilegge, the officers definitely came over to teach us a thing or two about volleyball. The event was organized by Ken Stanislaus, a staff member, who sits on our

Black History Month Planning Committee. The Committee felt it was a great way to continue to build positive relations between students and police. It was a fun experience for everyone and we are planning more of this type of activity for the future. Other activities for the month included a steel drum being played during the lunch hours. There was

also a presentation by the Black Theatre Workshop. Each day, students got biographical information on individuals. On Feb.18th the committee organized a “spoken word” presentation for students and it was inspiring.

had the option of moving to pull down the end of a teeter-totter in order to double their points, taking into consideration that an opposing robot could pull down on the opposite end. The Mac High robotics team responded with a tracked, steel monster of a robot. Powered by 12V automotive and drill motors, it drove and pivoted on a continuous track drive system based on chains and sprockets. The robot used chain-driven drawer sliders to elevate its pickup system that then deposited balls into the troughs. Finally, it was equipped with an 1800 lb capacity winch and extra ballast on the robot to pull down the teeter-totter and any opposition trying to hold down the other side. Their robot was very competitive with those produced by nineteen other colleges, public, and private high schools who participated in the competition, showing them what Mac pride is all about. They headed home with three awards. Although eliminated in the quarter finals of the game, they finished in fourth place overall. This is a huge feat for a small public high school amongst such high caliber competition. Judging of each aspect of the competition was done by professionals in each field. The Mac

Congratulations to the Macdonald High School robotics team, who participated in the CRC Robotics Competition from February 18-20 at École St-Maxime in Laval. The students on the team have been working very hard since last March. They have put in several hundred extra-curricular hours of work to produce a robot, display kiosk, and a bilingual video, website and a journal for the major cross-curricular project. They started their year with various courses on electronics, drafting, fabrication techniques, welding and the construction of practice robots that were put on display at our open house in October. They then put their skills into practice by creating and decorating their kiosk and beginning the design, prototype and construction phases of their robots, as well as producing their video, website and journal. Their theme was Star Wars, rather… Mac Wars. They represented George Lucas well with a kiosk modeled on the bridge of an Imperial Star Destroyer, various costumes made from scratch, a video based on the original movie (with special effects no less) and of course their robot playing the role of R2D2 (complete with rotating dome above it). This year’s challenge required the robot to work with a partner from another school and be able to pick up balls off of the floor, maneuver across the playing field, elevate and then drop the balls inside troughs at various heights on a wall. Each team then

Robotics team was a finalist in every category except website. Their kiosk and video finished in third place, the robot and journal in fourth and they won the team spirit award for helping over half a dozen schools get damaged or non-functional robots back on track. Their reputation for their ability and eagerness in assisting others preceded them as they were approached for help by other schools before they had even unloaded their equipment from their own truck on arrival! Feel free to check out their website at: http://macrobotics.squarespace.com The students have every reason to be proud of their efforts and are already planning for next year. They may come from a small school, but have a big heart. Wish them luck for next year!

ST. CHARLES’ 2010 CARNIVAL CELEBRATION

CURLING For the first time this year we introduced a new event as part of our schedule of tournaments. Since it is an Olympic year we decided to introduce Curling to our Grade 3 students. Ten schools participated at 3 different venues ( Baie d’Urfe Curling Club, Glenmore Curling Club, Hudson Legion Curling Club). The students who participated had a great time learning about curling and practicing what they learned at the rink. Many thanks to everyone who

participated and also to the organizing committee who helped make it a success. Peter Gilson - PEH Consultant

What a better way to get a head start on spring than to enjoy one of Quebec’s favourite treats – maple syrup. St. Charles celebrated Carnival this year by taking part in a school wide field trip to a Cabane à Sucre. It was a beau-tiful spring like day and the students enjoyed a calèche ride, nature walk, outdoor free play and the most delicious

traditional Québecois meal with all its trimmings. The best part for most students, besides being with all their friends, was the tire d’érable (maple taffy). Thanks to all the parent volunteers in organizing and participating in what was a great Carnival celebration!!! Mme Coiteux - Principal, St. Charles School

From February 13th to February 16th, 2010 we were in Halifax, Nova Scotia where we attended The French for the Future National Ambassadors Youth Forum. We learned about the advantages of knowing two languages, such as how we can have more friends and a wider variety of job opportunities. We also learned about the Acadian people and their history. Over the course of the four-day conference, we discussed ways to get the French language more apparent between us and our friends, or in our communities. This was actually very interesting because the two of us were in a situation very opposite of that of

other participants. Where everyone was fighting to get French noticed, we are in a place where there is French all around us. We discussed how French is incorporated into our school life and whereas most of the ambassadors don’t have very much French in their school we have it all around us and it is a mandatory class. We were honoured to meet the Minister of Acadian Affairs, Mr. Graham Steele, as well as fortunate enough to have him talk to us about the importance of French in a person’s life and how it gives you more opportunities to further your

life ambitions. We also got to meet amazing people that have had the opportunity to learn French and have used this language to bring more possibilities to their life. We learned that French can be used to make your dreams come true at a greater level than you would have thought. Matthew Morgan & Haley Diamant, Lakeside Academy Sec IV

Mount Pleasants’ Student Council consists of students from grades four to six. They are elected by fellow students and work together to better the community and school. This year they have been hard at work. Their first initiative was to organize a “New Toy Drive” for the Welcome Hall Mission for Christmas. It was a big success. After that project, they decided to continue to work for the Welcome Hall Mission and had a “New Sock Drive” to support the needy in Montreal. Their goal was 350 pairs of new socks. In a few days, it will be exactly one year since I started at the school board as a Communications Officer. And what a year it has

been! From going through the Major School Change consultation to organizing the LBPSB in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, every day has brought a new experience. When I first started, I remember feeling a little frightened because I didn’t have a background in education and I was

entering a completely different work environ-ment than what I was used to. But as the months kept passing by, I found I was learning more and becoming more comfortable. I was recently asked to speak to some grade eight students at Lindsay Place High School about the career path I chose. One student asked me what I loved most about my current job. My answer to that student was that I really enjoy learning something new every day.

The field of education is so vast and so incredibly interesting that I don’t think I’ll ever stop learning about it. I feel so fortunate to be able to take my past experiences in the fields of media and communications and be able to apply them to my job here at the school board. Working in education is rewarding in so many ways and I wake up every morning looking forward to my day. Each day brings something different and I have been lucky to see first-hand all the good

this school board does. Watching and learning from my fellow colleagues has been a great experience. They work tirelessly to make sure students get the best education possible. I am proud to say I work for the Lester B. Pearson School Board and I look forward to what the next year will bring me in my role as communications officer. the situation of homelessness here in Montreal. This population, that many times goes overlooked and neglected, needs our support if these people are ever going to make their way back into society. Your students may not know how a new pair of socks is appreciated by the homeless. The warm weather during the day and cold at night is the worst time of year, their feet get soaking wet during the day and at night they cannot keep warm. So THANK YOU to all of your students who were involved in this gesture which will mean so much too so many. On behalf of the hurting and homeless of Montreal, again, Thank You! of Dans La Rue. In just three weeks, we collected 255 pairs of new socks beating last year’s total of 194!! The socks were distributed to Montreal’s disadvantaged youth during the winter. This initiative reflects the QEP’s broad area of learning “Citizenship

and Community Life” which is connected to the Ethics and Religious Culture Program. Way to go ERC students! Tamara Beach - Cycle 1 ERC Teacher

REPORT FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD PARENT COMMISSIONER RESIGNS Parent Commissioner Judy Mrenice advised the Board on March 15th that she would be resigning her position on Council for

personal reasons, effective the date of the notice. The Council thanks Judy for her dedication and commitment to all students and to the Board. Her stay on council was brief but her enthusiasm and desire to learn and to contribute were immediately apparent. We wish her well. NEW PARENT COMMISSIONER NAMED In the light of the resignation of Parent Commissioner Judy Mrenice, the Central Parents Committee proceeded immediately to seek a replacement. After a consultation with its members, Mr. Domenic Pavone was named as the Parent Commissioner, Elementary effective with the Council meeting of March 22nd. Council welcomes Domenic and we look forward to working with him. MAJOR SCHOOL CHANGE (MSC) FOLLOW-UP Plans for the implementation of the changes voted in at the MSC meeting on December 21st are moving ahead to ensure that much of it is in place for the start of the 2010/2011 school year. The Equipment Services department is studying the needs in all MSC cases and is expected to bring recommendations to the April meeting of the Facilities Committee and then to Council, if all is found to be ready. There have been some rumors that the Board is backing away from the plans for the Vocational Training centres. The fact is that all plans are being developed as adopted. The BHS/Gordon Robertson plans are ready for consideration in April; the others are more complicated and will be brought forward in the coming weeks. The Riverdale/WICC plans changes will occur over a couple of years and the Beurling/PACC plans are still awaiting decisions from the Ministry of Education, Leisure, and Sport.

ANNUAL REPORT The LBPSB Annual Report for 2008/2009 was presented just prior to the March 22nd meeting of the Council of Commissioners. We remain the only Board to produce its report exclusively in electronic format. This allows the Board to save the considerable expense associated with printing hard copies of the report. This format also allows the Board to present a lot more information than is available in the print format, including detailed reports from the Directors of each of the Board’s departments. New technology also allowed for much more graphics to be included in the report. The Annual Report is available for viewing by accessing the Board’s web site at www.lbpsb.qc.ca and then following the link to the Annual Reports. STRATEGIC PLAN The consultation on the 2010-2015 Strategic Plan was launched at the March 22nd Council meeting. The new plan is built on the previous Strategic Plan and updates the Board’s goals, targets, and the means by which those plans will be met. There are a number of measurable objec-tives that will be reviewed and reported on annually. The draft plan is being distributed to all consultative partners with the intention of having the final 2010-2015 Strategic Plan adopted at the June 2010 meeting of the Council. The documents are available for viewing on the board’s web site. REVISION OF THE LBPSB ELECTORAL MAP As per my report last month the Board has proceeded with having a plan drafted for the revision of the Board’s electoral wards. We are expecting the preliminary plan to be delivered to us in the next few days and the Governance and Ethics Committee will meet during the month of April to review the suggested new 10-ward electoral map. Following the com-mittee review, the plan will be sent to the Director General of Elections of Quebec (DGEQ) for technical review and once we receive approval to proceed, the plan will be distributed for general consultation. We are still awaiting news from the

Ministry of Education concerning the application we made for 5 additional wards. Should the Minister react favorably, we will have the map redesigned to include any additional wards that are accorded. The final draft electoral map for the next school board elections should be approved by the Council at the June meeting and then submitted for approval to the DGEQ. COMPLAINT EXAMINATION PROCEDURE POLICY THREE YEAR PLAN OF ALLOCATION OF IMMOVABLES 2010/2011 – 2012/2013 These two consultations are underway. We remind everyone that the responses are due back to the Board in Mid-April for consideration by the Council at the regular meeting of the Council in April. NEW SCHOOL UPDATE Representatives of the Board attended a public hearing in St-Lazare as the Town Council consulted its residents on zoning changes that would allow the construction of new schools in that municipality. Senior Director (Finance) Carol Heffernan made a twenty minute presentation reviewing the plans for the new school and the history of the evolution of this file. Others present from the LBPSB were Bruno Côté, Director of Equipment Services, Board Chair Marcus Tabachnick; and the three off-island Commissioners: Angela Nolet (Board Vice-Chair); Danny Olivenstein; and Susan Bartlett-Lewis. Board members answered questions from residents for about an hour. Many questions were focused on long term urban planning issues and those were responded to by the Mayor and some Municipal Councilors. The LBPSB very much appreciates the efforts of St-Lazare Mayor Pierre Kary and thanks him for inviting us to be part of the public consultation. COUNCIL OF COMMISSIONERS MEETING DATES 2010/2011 The Council gave provisional approval to the calendar of dates for the Council of Commissioners’ meetings for the 2010/2011 school year. MEADOWBROOK COOKS UP A STORM! The Meadowbrook Cooking Club is currently in its 3rd year. This program was originally developed to teach life skills to our high needs students. However due to its popularity we have extended the opportunity to include students from all 3 cycles. Each week we make a healthy meal, which conforms to school board nutritional policy, from a variety of food groups. Students are 100% involved in the preparation of the meal. Senior students act as helpers for the younger children as they learn to cut, chop, mix and cook foods. In addition, they are learning cooking terms and measurements. Our students are learning the

importance of hygiene in food preparation as well as learning to

work as part of a team. They share duties such as table setting, washing and drying dishes, sweeping as well as leaving their environment in the same or better condition

as they found it. This helps instill a sense of pride in themselves and their work. Meadowbrook’s cooking program reinforces many aspects of the student’s curriculum – science, math, reading, writing, computer skills and nutrition. Students receive a nutrition activity book which they work on while food is baking or cooking. In addition, they are participating in the

development of a cookbook, which we hope to sell at the end of the year as a fundraiser for the club. This very successful program would not be possible without the budget and materials that we have received from the nutrition department at our school board. Miriam Silverberg and Terri Reid

RIVERVIEW SCHOOL’S OLYMPIC OPENING CEREMONY

FITNESS AT MANSFIELD ATHLETIC CLUB

On February 16th 2010 the grade 10 and 11 students of Lakeside Academy had the opportunity to experience fitness in a whole new light. The physical educators at Lakeside Academy; Nicole Jones and Kyle Peterdy wanted to expose their students to a variety of different activities with the hopes of sparking an interest in them. The third competency states “students will adopt a healthy active lifestyle”. In order to ensure students pursue fitness beyond the school walls they need to be aware of what else is out there. Eighty eager students were bused to Mansfield Athletic club, where they participated in an afternoon of fitness. Each student experienced yoga, indoor cycling as well as a circuit training class. The students

were exposed to activities they had never seen before. They were in awe of the experience! This opportunity allowed them to see that there is so much more to fitness then they ever could have imagined. Giving students the opportunity to partake in a wide variety of activities results in a greater number of students wanting to pursue fitness on their own! Adopting a healthy active lifestyle is the ultimate goal of physical education therefore educators must do what it takes to fully achieve this goal. Beyond the fact that most students were sore for two days, this was a wonderful experience for our students that they will forever remember!! We are grateful that the wonderful staff at Mansfield opened up their arms to our students!!

It might not be Vancouver but Riverview’s got game! On a crisp Monday morning Riverview Elementary started off the day in the spirit of the Olympics parading 83 flags into the gymnasium to the music of the 2010 Olympic Anthem. By the direction of physical education teacher Scott Lambton and two creative integration aides, Janice Young and Susan Morrow, the lively display of flags, mascots, and a very original Olympic cauldron, raised enthusiasm and

excitement for the goings-on in Vancouver.

PEARSON NEWS

There was the singing of “Winter Games” and a reading of the Olympic oath. The school resounded with the singing of “Oh Canada” and a wonderful procession of white doves made by the first graders represented the opening of the games. We are proud to note that our physical education teacher Scott Lambton has two players of his Dawson-Blues

Women’s Hockey team, which he coaches, on the Olympic team this year. We are thrilled to see the kids get excited about their country and the world’s joining for this great event. Who knows we might have a future Olympian among us even now!

GORDON ROBERTSON’S SPECIAL FUNDRAISER

To raise money for the people in Haiti, the Gordon Robertson Career Centre for Beauty donated all proceeds from the beauty services offered at the school to the Free the Children Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund. The school’s students offer clients a variety of beauty services from hairdressing services, to manicures and pedicures to facials. The ‘Caring for Haiti’

fundraiser took place on February 11th and in addition to the proceeds from the services being donated, students at the school also held a bake sale for clients, a raffle and they even had a karaoke section where anyone who wished to do so could sing a song for a donation. An amazing $2,000 was raised!

BLACK HISTORY MONTH AT MACDONALD HIGH SCHOOL

PACC ADULT CELEBRATES BLACK HISTORY MONTH

As part of its focus on inclusion and respect for diversity, PACC Adult Centre celebrated Black History Month with a multitude of activities for all students and staff to enjoy. We kicked off Black History Month with a lunch-time hair braiding competition. Traxx of TRAXX Salon judged the gorgeous hairstyles and awarded Shantoi Tomlison with a seventy-five dollar gift

certificate to his salon. Other lunch-time activities included Jeopardy Trivia, a soccer tournament and the popular staff versus students’ volleyball; where, for the first time, the students were defeated three games to two. PACC students were inspired by guest speaker Alvin Powell, former NFL player, who spoke of drug awareness and prevention. Also, as part of a community partnership with L’Octogone Library, students were invited to an interactive mock trial of Marie-Joseph Angelique, a slave accused of setting fire to her owner’s home in Montreal. Some of the student-led activities included a special edition of PACC Talk where students interviewed Reverend Emmanuel Ofori of the United Church of Canada.

For the very first time at Macdonald High School, Glenn Clarke and his band “The Exotics” performed for the grade 11 class. The Performance consisted of African drumming mixed with dance and salsa moves. Students and teachers were invited to get up and dance along with a professional dancer while learning new moves! According to Mark Padilla a grade 11 student “I honestly enjoyed the presentation because it was a rare opportunity to see musicians play, sing and dance….” Yishan Guo a recent student from China said…”the show is a quite a good way to make people know more about black culture” Another stu-dent said “I would love for them to come back because for me it was very Zen and calming and the music and dance were so cultural.” Students enjoyed this very unique performance and were eager to have Glen Clarke and the “Exotics” visit our school again for Black history month. Grades 7 through 10 were entertained by Macdonald High school Teacher Sonia Barnes who is a Black history educator in the Montreal community. She was able to relate the history of Blacks in Quebec and

Canada in an interactive manner that fully engaged the students. One of those students Turell Daye was asked: Why is it important to have Black History Month? His response is presented here: Black history is important simply because it represents who we are as a people and what we have achieved. It shows us how we got to where we are today. Without black history we would be lost. Lost without a place in this world. Lost simply because we have no idea how we got this far and no idea how to continue to progress in a positive manner. Black history is filled with more than just a bunch of pain and suffering, filled with more than just people with dreams. It is filled with emotion, filled with blood, filled with courage and filled with pride. Without this we are nothing. Without heros such as Rosa Parks, Harriet Tubman, Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcom X we would still be slaves. We would still be in fields picking cotton. We would still be singing songs with hidden messages. Without them, Macdonald High School wouldn’t have Indians, Asians, White and Black people.

Without Black history we wouldn’t have ANY multi-cultural schools. Don’t get me wrong life still isn’t the way Martin Luther King Jr. wanted it to be. There is still discrimination and a lot of it too. That’s another reason why we shouldn’t forget where we came from because it helps us remember what we’ve been through, it helps us remember what we went through to be accepted and it helps us to remember what we did to be so strong as a people today. Black History is what made us who we are today.

The discussion focused on the devastation caused by the earthquake in Haiti and the Church’s role in helping with the relief effort. Through this episode of PACC Talk, students raised $335 for Haiti relief. The PACC Choir, led by Choir Director Cleopatra Marshall, dazzled everyone with a Tribute to Haiti concert. Performances include a repertoire of negro spirituals. Black History Month celebrations closed with a delicious Taste of the Caribbean lunch held in the student lounge. These events would not be possible without the dedication and creativity of the Black History Month Planning Committee (Orville Burrows, Charis Declou, Patricia Denison, Hepta Deslandes, Sophia Gittens, Andrew Mescheder, Shiela Sachdeva). Thank you to all!

JUBILEE STUDENTS HAVE OLYMPIC FEVER

FREE THE CHILDREN MURAL Congratulations to a group of grade 10 and 11 students, Teagan Smith, Sabrina Hancock & Karina Gelencser, Eric Nadeau, Nicole Desmangles, and Nora Frauley -Elson, who painted a wonderful mural for the "Free the Children" fundraiser which took place at the Olympic Stadium, Thursday, February 25th. The art project is an annual contest where a group of selected students in Canada design and paint one canvas mural per school on a theme proposed by FTC and PNMW with the

Greg Shulkin, Olympic torch-bearer, shared his incredible story of survival, determination, and hope with the students at Jubilee Elementary School. Students listened to Greg’s inspiring message and then were welcome to ask many questions about living with a disability, and persevering in the midst of incredible challenge. Greg Shulkin was an avid athlete until he became ill with meningitis; he fell into a coma for weeks and then suffered a heart

attack. The complications led to kidney failure and blindness. Despite the incredible hurdles he faced Greg shared his positive attitude and life lessons with students who were incredibly attentive and engaged. This exchange kicked off an afternoon of outdoor activities. Our Olympic opening ceremonies, orchestrated by Jubilee Phys. Ed. teacher Walter Makowski, launched a two

ALAN SHAIN VISITS BEURLING ACADEMY PEARSON NEWS

OLYMPIC DAY AT ST. ANTHONY

Our Cycle 1 students were treated to a special performance by Alan Shain. Alan Shain is an actor, writer, stand-up comic and disability activist who has Cerebral Palsy. Alan’s play, “Still Waiting for that Special Bus” is a semi-autobiographical story about a man who is getting ready for his date. However, he is dependent on the accessible bus which has to pick him up. Alan not only entertained all of the cycle 1 students but also provided the students with a greater awareness of the types of obstacles that disabled

individuals face on a daily basis. Alan achieved this by giving the students a live theatrical one hour performance right in the school’s auditorium. The students remained attentive right into their lunch hour! “Still Waiting for that Special Bus” connected well with the QEP’s Broad Area of Learning, “Citizenship and Community Life” in which students are encouraged to promote cultural harmony and acceptance so that all individuals are valued in society. Tamara Beach - Cycle 1 ERC Teacher

The physical education teachers, Joanne O’Reilly and Robert Turcotte, organized an afternoon of activities that began with Ms. Cheryle Cavener – an Olympic Torch Carrier leading the students in their final kilometer of their simulated run from Montreal to Vancouver. The entire school, 363 students, gathered in the school yard and formed the Olympic rings to start the festivities. Six stations had been setup in the adjacent park, manned by parent volunteers and grade 6 students. All

students participated in the different stations. At one of the stations - students were served hot chocolate complete with marshmallows and a mini cupcake. The daycare students had made 400 mini cupcakes, icing them in the Olympic colors and displayed them in rings. As well the daycare students had created a mural depicting the Olympics. It was a truly amazing day that included participation of our principal, all teachers, students,

parent volunteers and the Olympic Torch Carrier. Sheila Showers - Daycare coordinator for St. Anthony

MULTICULTURAL EVENT FOR HAITI AT MAC HIGH

It was a Multicultural event for Haiti that was attended by seven Macdonald High School seniors with their art teacher Shannon Ellah. The grade 11's had participated in painting and designing a seven foot long mural that spoke to the rights of children. Close to thirty students lent a hand on the artwork that was organized by "Painting A New World" as a pilot project linked with

Free the Children. The organization assists artists in Africa, Chad, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Haiti in selling their work internationally and using the profits raised here to build schools and art institutes in their local communities. The project was the first of its kind in the Lester B Pearson School Board and the gala proved to be very educational and moving for all who attended. The

evening was highlighted by showcased artwork, Guest of Honour, Yolande James the Minister of Immigration and Cultural Communities, Maasai dancers and fabulous music. What an experience!

LAKESIDE WRESTLERS

TECHNOLOGY AT WILDER PENFIELD

We are totally excited and pleased with a special “Collaborative SmartBoard” project that connects Wilder Penfield teachers and University of Montreal students. Thanks to the efforts of Professor Robert David and kindergarten teacher Helene Constantin, the project allows for a win-win situation for both educational institutions. The first phase consisted of a class

Lakeside Academy has always enjoyed a wealth of team sports where athletes compete against other schools in the GMAA. It occurred to me this year, however, that we lacked individual sports for those athletes that prefer an independent competitive experience. We chose to add several options, among them were cross country, swimming, and track and field. The athletics department grossly underestimated how popular and successful these sports would become but our biggest surprise came in the form of our upstart

Olympic freestyle wrestling team. Volunteer community coach Toni Ronci Jr. trained a team that would far exceed our expectations; demonstrating that a little hard work and dedication goes a long way. Our team, though small in numbers and experience, was big in heart. We sent 4 wrestlers to the GMAA city finals at Kahnawake Survival School in February where all four medaled in their respective weight categories. This effort included two bronzes for Zach Zachary and Isaih Philips, one silver for Kylan Bomberry, and one gold awarded to Lakeside’s undefeated Secondary three sensation

GOVERNING BOARD TRAINING UPDATE The training session that took place at the end of January was well attended by governing board members and principals. Participants received information on the new provisions of the Education Act since the adoption of Bill 88. The material presented that evening is available through the governing board link on

our website. All schools and centres were sent several copies of the fourth edition of the Governing Board Resource Manual, which reflects the recent changes to the law. It is also available online. A reminder that this is the time of the year when governing boards are asked to review their composition and make

sure it is meeting the needs of the school community. Chairs were sent a letter to this effect in mid-March and the board is requesting responses by May 14. You are encouraged to visit the governing board section of the board’s website for pertinent information relating to various aspects of this committee. Should you have any

Although all other participants were physically present within the classroom setting, our teachers chose to use technology and participated via video conferencing - thus truly demonstrating that technology is part of everyday life in our school. The second phase brought U of M students to our school. Wilder teachers gave an inservice focused on the components of SmartBoard technology. The goal was to enable these students to build interactive programs. Thanks to our teachers opening up their classrooms, the students were thrilled to be able to have a hands-on experience using our electronic equipment. We are fortunate to

Bradley Bomberry. Due to our unusual degree of success so early in the program’s development, we anticipate a large leap in enrollment next fall for the winter season beginning in November. Congratulations boys, keep up all the hard work! Kyle Peterdy - Lakeside Athletics

Phase three of the project gives the U of M students a practical class assignment. Professor David has asked his students to create interactive SmartBoard activities. Wilder Penfield teachers have provided the students with subject matter being covered in the classrooms, thus making the final product a pertinent one. These students will also be producing a pod cast. Professor David and Wilder Penfield staff look forward to continued collaborative projects that enhance learning for all of those involved.
