WA WA WARBLINGSWa Wa Shriners Regina, Canada
First, I must thank all the Nobility for agreat Installation Banquet and Ball. I espe-cially thank Ill. Sir Dick Gutfriend for lead-ing the Installation, well done the new for-mat worked well. Noble Des Patton for hisfinal Memorial Service, you deserved thestanding ovation. Noble Des has set the barhigh when visiting Nobility tell us that theyhave or are going to copy our memorial serv-
ice. I also thank Ill. Sir Stu MacLachlan forappointing me to the Divan 9 years ago, andLady Pearl for all her support and encourage-ment, we have done this together and it’s notover yet. Hey, what fun with those Clowns, thanks for the makeup and haircut and wewill see you in the “alley.” The big kids hada blast, let’s all have fun this year.
It is indeed an honour to be elected toserve as Potentate of Wa Wa Shriners for2006. I will do my utmost to represent you inall functions of our organization.
Congratulations to Ill Sir Don Beggs for ayear well done. Don’t get lost in those sandtraps outside your back door. Take a welldeserved rest, and we will see you back inharness soon.
The 2006 Wa Wa pin is in support of thekids. I’m the Klown in the middle and thekids holding their crutches high as they winat improving their situation in life. Your con-tinued support of our great philanthropy –Shriners Hospitals for Children and ourPatient Travel Fund is making successes pos-sible. Keep it rolling, Nobles!
After the many years of declining mem-
bership I hope that we can take a serious lookat and a concerted effort to stem the tide andturn this trend around. Other organizationsare doing things to attract attention to them,we need to do the same, and we are going tohelp you do it. We need to attract the youngmen of our communities, with things theylike to do. How better than to invite them toan organization that helps teach them broth-erly love, relief and truth through doing inthe community, and caring for children thatcan not care for themselves.
Replace yourself plus one. If we asShrine-Masons continue to allow CraftLodges to go into darkness or amalgamate,we are endorsing our clubs to the same fate.If you’re reading this and you’re not aShriner, just ask the Noble whose name is onthe mailing label of this Warblings.
Finally, this is our 95th year of Wa WaShriners in this great province, let’s build toour 100th year with a 100% increase inmembership within the next 5 years. I’ll betyou it can be done.
Gerry HodgesPotentate, WA WA Shriners
Editor’s NoteMembership is still the number one topic
around the Shrine. Whatever the problem is inmaintaining our membership, it is very difficultto pinpoint the one cause. The MembershipReport identifies many of the causes for the lossof membership. The report indicates that wemust hold onto our present membership andrecruit new members. This year Wa Wa Shrinersare hosting the Midwest Shrine Associationsummer session. This highly visible session willno doubt have many of the public asking about
the Shrine. Take time to answer the question andtake the opportunity to recruit a new member.
Thanks to Ladies Margaret Bachynski andBetty Eskdale for their assistance on proofread-ing the Warblings. Four more eyes sure helps.
Articles and photos are more then welcomefor inclusion in the Warblings. When writingyour article remember that our proper name isWa Wa Shriners. The word temple (lower case)is defined as a group of Nobles, the word“Centre” has no meaning in Shrine law but is
used commonly to identify a temple’s mainbuilding.
Tn our case the fraternal name is Wa WaShriners. Just remember to never put “Wa Wa”and “Temple” together.
To ensure that your article get published anddoes not get lost, send them directly to [email protected].

Chief of Staff Report
Thank you to all who participated in thememorial service and Potentates ball, an excellentshowing. As we approach the summer season of
parades, performances and events, I need your listof events, both for approval and posting for othersto plan their commitments.
The bulk of this article will be on MidwestSummer Session being held in Regina, Aug 10th– 12th, 2006. The WA WA MSA 2006 committeemade its presentation to the 12 shrine centres atthe winter session held in Regina on February 9th– 11th. It was a great success with over 1200rooms committed. Details of the handouts andforms can be found on our website,www.wawashriners.org, under the links to MSA2006. This also contains the booklet we produced,in PDF format, for all to read. These are listed asV1, and will be updated as required.
On the WA WA Shriners side, John Clarke,Chairman – Housing & Registrations will besending out forms and information to the shrineclubs and units, please respond as soon as possi-ble. Rod Stafford will be Acting Chief of Staff WA WA at MSA 2006 and will be sending outforms for parades and competitions. ALL noblesmust be registered to participate in any MSAevent.
The various competition committees havebeen hard at work to put together a great packagefor all, once we start to get feedback on thoseunits attending, they will move into high gear.
We can plot and plan and have great hopes, butit still comes down to manpower, the Noble on theground spending a few hours helping out. All thevarious committees require help, from VIP driversand vehicles to clean up and moving stuff around. As Chairman of Parades and Competitions, Irequire 30 Parade Marshals to man barracks onthe Thursday night parade, a couple of vans ortrucks to move chairs for the reviewing stand andplace/recover parade form up markers. We havepresented our plan and now, over the next fewmonths, we get into the fine tuning. To thosealready committed, I thank you, to others wantingto help, email [email protected] orleave a message at the Shrine Centre.
Mel Douglas, Chief of Staff Chairman, MSA 2006 Parades & Competitions
Recorder’s ReportFrom what I hear, Shriners throughout the
Province had some great New Year’s parties. Iknow for sure the New Year’s bash in Regina wasoutstanding.
Our Annual Meeting and banquet was wellattended and went very well. I’d like to thank theNobility in allowing me to continue to act asyour Recorder. I’ll try hard to do the best job Ican. Congratulations to all the Divan and in par-ticular, our new Potentate, Ill. Sir Gerry Hodgesin being elected and appointed to your new posi-tions. We have a great team this year and with theMidwest Shrine Convention here and all theother “usual” events we have, we’re looking for-ward to a busy, exciting time.
The remainder of the winter (hasn’t it beengreat!) and spring, Units will be practicing hardin preparation for their summer parades andactivities and circus will be here before youknow it.
Membership will continue to be the mostimportant and vital thing we do. Planning andexecution of those plans will be critical to oursuccess, because without new members, nothingelse can be done. Not fund raising, parades, hav-ing fun or most essential of all, helping children.
Direction will be provided by WaWaShriner’s Membership Committee and throughthem to the Shrine Clubs and Unit committees tothe Nobles.
But it’s not committees that sign upCandidates, but Nobles. Individual Nobles whorealize, that for them to belong to a successfulorganization, they need to bring others into thefold. So with that in mind and Ceremonial beinghere before you know it, lets get those applica-tions in.
See you out there!!C.B. (Brent) BlanchardRecorder

Efforts are well underway for 2006. All ven-ues are now set but with some changes from ear-lier reports. Regina has moved their site to theNorthgate Mall following unsuccessful negotia-tions with the Regina Exhibition Board. It isexpected that the change will benefit the RSC asvisibility is super at Northgate. The mall is verysupportive of our efforts there. Saskatoon, for thesame reason, has moved to Credit Union Centrewhere the tent will be put up. The folks out there
have also been most helpful to the club. All other clubs are very busy ensuring anoth-
er very well run circus with even better profitlevels.
Marketing is the main theme for 2006. If wemake circus the thing to do in your community,we can’t fail to eclipse 2005.
What are you doing to promote your circus?Every Noble needs to ask what they can do tohelp. There are lots of jobs, some big — some
small, which need to be done.We must all take care never to say anything
which could be taken as a negative. All Nobles should now be aware that profits
are going to be split 60-40 rather than 75-25.Your club can make good money for your ownneeds.
Circus is a Provincial team effort.Respectively submittedBill Forrest

I would like say a hearty thanks to all theShriners and their Ladies along with the Jobies whotook part in the 2005/06 Cash Calendar program. We had another banner year.
We had eight Shrine Clubs who sold out theircalendar allotment and this represents 50% of allthe Shrine Clubs.
When all the money and ticket stubs were in wehad sold 3,285 calendars which left 214 unsold. There have been a number of you that indicated tome that we would put out a special effort next year
to sell the 3,500 calendars that we purchase. Greatstuff.
The gross sales for 2005 was $65,720.00, whichreturned 413,144.00 to the Shrine Clubs and$28,806.00 to the Shrine Centre.
As you see this project is an excellent moneymaker for the Philanthropy and it doesn’t take thatmuch effort to sell them so lets all pitch in for nextyear. Remember, the person who brought a calen-dar this year will very likely buy one next year sokeep his name on your list and who knows he may
have a friend that wants one.Once again, we are planning for the 2006/07
Calendar Program so include us in your plans, andremember to have a new Unit picture taken for thecalendar.
Thanks again for all your support and I will belooking forward to working with you again nextyear.

Membership Report
2006 Membership Awards
Membership is the responsibility of everyShriner. The noted English author HermanMELVILLE once said: “We cannot live only forourselves. A thousand fibres connect us to our fel-low man.” We, as Shriners, being a member of theWorld’s Oldest Fraternity - the Masonic Family, must not only look internally to help ourselves butare encouraged to also look externally to help theMasonic order in providing candidates for their andour continuance.
During 2005, your Membership Committeeparticipated in three successful Temple sponsoredevents involving membership presentations, as wellas attending to matters relative to Membership.Although our main objective of having an AnnualIncrease of 1% in the net Membership of Wa WaShrine Centre, was not obtained, success wasachieved as statistically outlined hereunder.
Creation - 33 - increase of 6 (22%) over 2004(27) (goal was 8% of Membership?)
Restorations - 13 - increase of 3 (30%) over2004 (10) (goal was 20% )
Demits - 19 - decrease of 6 (30%) from 2004(25) (goal was 10% reduction))
Suspensions - 37 - increase of 1 (.0275%) over2004 (goal was 10% reduction)
Deaths - 44 - increase of 3 (.075%) over 2004During 2004, The total loss in membership was
65 Nobles (.0534% of Membership - 1222) During 2005, The total loss in membership was
54 Nobles (.0462% of Membership - 1168)The net loss in membership shows a net gain
in loss reduction of .0072%.One category (Death) is uncontrollable. Our
initiatives regarding Creations and Restorations aresatisfactory to good but we will continue to strive
for better. Demits and Suspensions are of a con-cern. Success was achieved in reducing the numberof demits in 2005, and we we hope to reduce thisnumber again in 2006. Of concern is the number ofmembers being suspended annually - 36 in 2004and 37 in 2005, a total of 73 in two years with only23 members restored in the same two years. Hadthis not have occurred, an increase in our Temple’sMembership of approx 30 members would resultedover the two years. Your Membership Committeewill concentrate on reducing suspensions andincreasing restorations, and the help of all nobles issolicited in this venture.
10 Clubs produced the 33 new Nobles whoseages range from 20 to 78 years, the average being47.75 yrs of age.
Certificates of Appreciation have been award-ed to the 24 “Top Line” signers of MembershipApplications. The efforts of these nobles is greatlyappreciated in assisting to create the total of 33 newmembers during 2005. Their participation in ourMembership program includes them in the activi-ties of the International Shrine Membership Year,June 1st., 2005 to June 10, and will assist ourTemple in meeting the quota of 42 new and 14restored members as set by our Imperial ShrineHeadquarters. The “Top Line” signers were:
Noble’s Keith BIRD, Brent BLANCHARD,Otto BOETTCHER, John BOOKER, Bill BOTT,John P. BROOKS, Ernest BUTZ, Mehmet DOK-MECI, Dave FAIRLIE, Brian FARRIES, FrancisHESTER, Gerry HODGES, Pat HUTCHISON, AlJAENEN, Bill JOHNSTONE, Greg MAR-CYNIUK, Vernon McLEAN, David POLACHEK,Bill THORN, Gordon WILES, MurrayWILLIAMS, , and Ill. Sirs Don BEGGS, Dave
HOUSTON (P.P.) and Stu MacLACHLAN(P.P.)During our Temple’s Annual Meeting held on
Jan. 21st., 2006, Ill. Sir Don BEGGS presented hisPotentate’s Membership Awards for 2005 in theform plaques to the following Shrine clubs for“Precentage increase in Membership relevant totheir Membership.”
For the most candidates - Wyn-El-Wa (18Nobles - 3 new members),

Masonic Family
It is written, “Formerly, through the periods ofthe Middle Ages, masonry carved its records uponpublic buildings, in the tracery of the cathedralwindows and the ornamentation of the palaces.”Freemasonry of today is content to devote itself towork of acts of kindness, charity, leadership train-ing and in them finds its highest praise and reward.
This year we celebrate the 100th anniversaryof the Grand Lodge of Saskatchewan. This marksa once-in-a- lifetime milestone that few fraterni-ties can have enjoyed. One hundred years ago, agroup of Master Masons saw the opportunity andthe necessity for forming a Grand Lodge inSaskatchewan. The Shrine Masons of Wa WaShriners want to celebrate this occasion, not as anend to a century of challenge and accomplish-ments, but as a beginning of a new century withchallenges and accomplishments yet to be ful-filled.
The history of these great institutions is punc-tuated by the vision of men who were committedto striving to improve themselves through theideals of Freemasonry. It was the visionary leader-ship of our Grand Lodge Officers throughout theyears that we celebrate today. Their decision toform the Grand Lodge has allowed us to celebratethis year and to spread the fraternity throughoutthe province. They have been men of stature anddetermination, focused on the ideals of Masonry. We point with pride to Ill Sir Pat Campbell, and IllSir Stu MacLachlan who have served as MostWorshipful Grand Master and Potentate of Wa WaShriners.
The future challenge will be to adapt to achanging world. We are sure that the GrandLodge of Saskatchewan will meet this challengewith new energy and renewed dedication. AsShrine Masons we have long supported our vari-
ous Blue Lodges and will continue to do so in thefuture. As Masons we must accept the challenge,to strengthen our Lodges, by sharing the Masonicbrotherhood with other good men. We must alsomake the public aware of the good work ofFreemasonry in your community and throughoutthe province. Be proud of your accomplishments.
Brethren, let us go forward for whatever mayawait us, with the positive assurance that withinour institution of Freemasonry, we find those prin-ciples of undying truth, justice and love, by whichour hearts are cemented together, not only to sur-vive and prosper for another 100 years, but also toimprove the lives of masons by strengthening thebridge of understanding, compassion and provid-ing opportunities for all of the brotherhood.

Clubs & UnitsWa Wa Pipes & Drums
Wa Wa Drum Corps
The band emerged from 2005 after a verysuccessful year (18 performances) and a partic-ularly good last month. Once again PastPotentate Gerry Armsworthy and his Lady Irmadid a fantastic job with the Highland ChristmasDinner along with the “volunteers” appointedfrom the bands men and their respective Ladies. As is the tradition, the dinner was a completesell-out.
A week later, we had our own ChristmasParty. Noble Norm Schwager and Son providinga delicious fare. A special Santa Claus was inattendance in the person of Casey Stone, a suc-cessful local singer, who led us in song followed
by closing solos. The band began the New Year learning our
new tunes in preparation for the competition atthe August Mid-West.
Then, on February 11, came the sad news ofthe sudden passing of our Pipe Major, NobleBruce Cooke. Losing our leader, was like a reg-iment losing its Colonel. If there ever was a Manfor All Seasons, it was Bruce. He was a husband, father, sailor, pilot, submariner, diver, musician, bag piper, professor and engineer. An ever-cheerful inspiring Leader once patient teacher,Bruce held high the Torch of Life. The followingpoem by Sir Henry Newbolt best explains.
There’s a breathless hush in the close to-nightTen to make and the match to win —
A bumping pitch and a blinding light,An hour to play and the last man in.
And it’s not for the sake of a ribboned coat,Or the selfish hope of a season’s fame,
But his Captain’s hand on his shoulder smote“Play up! play up! and play the game!”
The sand of the desert is sodden red, —Red with the wreck of a square that broke; —
The Gatling’s jammed and the colonel dead,And the regiment blind with dust and smoke.
The river of death has brimmed his banks,And England’s far, and Honour a name,
But the voice of a schoolboy rallies the ranks,“Play up! play up! and play the game!”
This is the word that year by yearWhile in her place the School is set
Every one of her sons must hear,And none that hears it dare forget.
This they all with a joyful mindBear through life like a torch in flame,
And falling fling to the host behind —“Play up! play up! and play the game!”

Prince Albert Shrine ClubWell, It’s been awhile, but our Club Reporter
has come alive, since last reporting, PrinceAlbert Shrine Club , though small, is quiteactive, we have been busy working BINGOS,Cancer Patient Transportation – Calendar Sales, and are now working towards making the ShrineCircus a profitable undertaking. We did have aset back. In the fall, somebody broke into our
Shrine Scooter Trailer and “borrowed” four ofour Scooters. We did manage to recover one ingood shape, however one was totally smashedbeyond repair – a third is being checked over andthe fourth still missing. This will no doubt curtailour appearance in some Parades this year – how-ever Noble Lou Lintick will be there with theChoo-Choo Patrol.
Noble President John Hareuther is now look-ing at expanding activities to include a“CLOWN” unit.
We are looking forward to the return of someof our “Snow Birds” – need all the help we canget.

2005 Provincial Golf TournamentAnd then the rain came. Nobles and Ladies of all sizes and shapes were
eager and excited to tame the Melfort Golf & Country Club. Teams had beenmade prior to the tournament and bragging rights were around, as to who werethe best. It was “All Good Backslapping Fun”. In a pinch, Noble GerryArmsworthy (who has a GIFT), did a masterful job as our Auctioneer thatFriday evening. As the Auctioneer that we had lined up had a cow stuck in themud and had to retrieve the poor thing. Can you believe it? Gerry, you just
might have a side job!Saturday morning, we gave the ladies enough time to prune their feathers.
Breakfast and chatter were next in order for everyone — and a great meal itwas! … Time to Golf … Let me tell you Nobles and Ladies, it was completeconfusion. We had people going every which way but loose! Where’s the 1stTee? Where’s the 10th Tee? Where’s the 14th Tee? Joe, I’m lost! etc., etc., etc.It was absolutely GREAT!!! Six hours later — the golf scores were pouring in,and all very close, making Sunday a very interesting day, indeed.
After a delicious supper and more comraderie, which lasted into the weehours — TIRED was starting to win over.
Sunday — ah, Sunday. Everyone was eager but there was a little hesitation— the sky was clouding over — should we or should we not? But someonesaid, “It never rains on Shriners!” and off they went in all directions again.About an hour later — the Rain Came and there were drenched golfers all overthe place. Laughter and chatter abounded and everyone seemed to have a goodtime. There would be no more golf today.
Illustrious Sir Don Beggs enlightened everyone present on Shrinedom andits purpose and what a great purpose it is.
As the chairman of the 2005 Shrine Golf Tournament, I want to thankeveryone who helped make it a success — we met Old Friends and we madeNew Friends and that is GOOD!
All the Nobles and Ladies were winners, no matter which way you look atit.
As ever,Joe & Wanda Ollivier

While we waited for the tables to be cleared ofthe dinner dishes and the bread and water to be setout for the tasting portion of the evening, we had afew draws for door prizes. These draws continuedthroughout the evening. In the background, thePipers and the Drummer from the WAWA Pipesand Drums could be heard warming up.
