What is the Canadian Health Network?

CHN is a national bilingual health information project, funded by Health Canada, that focuses on providing access to web-based information on health promotion and disease prevention.

What can you find on the CHN website?

Authoritative Canadian health information in both official languages

Full-text access to over 10,000 pamphlets, fact sheets & other resources on health promotion & disease prevention

Links to over 650 health organizations from across Canada

What do CHN partners have in common?

• they are all not-for-profit and all credible.• they are all Canadian• each organization is involved in some aspect of

health information research or service delivery• every organization has a web page presence

• CCOHS is the CHN affiliate partner for Workplace Health

• provides leadership and expertise on workplace health content

• selects quality resources and responds to health information inquiries

What is a CHN Health Centre?

• A gateway to information on a specific health topic or population group

• Health Centres on 26 health topics• Variety of ways to find information:

– link to a Guided Search– "Quick Search" on common health requests – FAQs– CHN Recommends Key Canadian resources – "Beyond our Borders” International Resources – special services (e.g. phone lines, discussion groups, quizzes)

• FAQs are created specifically for CHN by our partner organizations and cover health topics of common interest.

Combining Search Terms Using the A to Z Search

• Search for up to 5 topics at once.• Combine terms using the Search Options

Any of the Terms: to find all documents that contain even 1 of the search terms entered. • Example: Tai ChiYoga

Search the A to Z for Proteins or Carbohydrates

• Click on the letters of the alphabet to locate and select the terms Protein & Carbohydrates. Both should appear in the green Search Box.

• Click on the Any of the Terms search option button to search for resources on any one of the topics listed.

• Click on the green Search button to find these resources.

When to use the Keyword Search Engine

• The keyword search engine searches CHN document subject headings, titles of documents & annotations that describe their content, to find documents that match your search terms.

• Use the search engine when you can’t locate a topic in the AtoZ index, or if you want to build a more specific search than the AtoZ index will allow.

These words do not have to appear right next to each other within the text of the documents. EXAMPLE: diet osteoporosis
