Te nationwide increase in identiy thef has ledto a jump in raudulent tax returns, making tax raudone o the astest growing crimes in the country. Teseraudulently filed reund requests contain fictitiousand stolen identity inormation. Te Montana Department o Revenue has seena dramatic increase in the number o raudulentreturns in the last couple o years because o the risein identity thef. So ar this tax season, the departmenthas intercepted about 80 raudulent state incometax returns and stopped approximately $143,000 in

raudulent claims or tax reunds. In tax year 2012, the department discovered979 raudulent returns and prevented $783,000 inraudulent reunds. Tat number took a big jump overtax year 2011, when we intercepted 142 raudulentreturns and prevented $227,000 in raudulent reunds. axpayers can reduce their chances o havingtheir identities used in tax raud by filing their taxes asearly in the tax season as possible. Not only do you receive your tax reund asterwhen you file early, but by filing early you reduceyour chances o becoming a victim o tax raud, said Montana Revenue Director Mike Kadas. Tedepartment is vigilant about stopping raud and wecan work together with taxpayers by giving raudsters

less time to tr y to steal your money. Identity thef is now the most reported crime inthe country. Identity thieves can live anywhere, steal key pieceso your personal inormation, and file a raudulenttax return in your name, said Attorney General imFox. Our Office o Consumer Protection is availableto help Montanans arm themselves with inormation

so they can protect their identities and thmind.
