The economy is a mess, the weather is driving us all crazy, the Presidential election is already boring us to tears, and the Supreme Court says our 10 year-olds can't call "900" numbers without our written permission. Isn't there any GOOD NEWS these days?

Of course there is. There's lots of good news, and lots of things to make us glad we're alive. Why, there are even things right here at Rodeph Torah (translation: -who's got the keys to the ark?") to brighten anyone's day. Well, you may ask, like what? (Please ask; otherwise, I'm stuck for a column.)

I'm glad you asked (you did, didn't you?) Here is my own per­sonal list of "Things to Love about Temple Rodeph Torah":

• Right after we opened our building, they started building a Chinese restaurant on the comer.

• Even on warm, sunny days, no kid will get out of the car for Religious School before the car reaches the spot closest to the door.

• You have to compare the pictures on each bathroom sign to tell which is the man and which is the woman.

• Your first trip down Mohawk Drive on a pitch-black night.

• During services, as we walk around with the Torah, people wait until the last possible moment to decide they want to kiss it, then the plow through the others in their row like linebackers.

• My singing.

VOLUME 9, NUMBER 7 1

• We have a sign on our driveway asking people to buckle their seat belts and giving a Biblical citation for the request, yet no one has ever checked to see if the Bible really mentions seat belts.

• Supermarket scrip.

• Every Seventh Grader knows the tone signals for the Morganville First Aid Squad.

• The feeling you get when you open the envelope and find the Bar/Bat Mitzvah date assignment for your Kindergartner.

• The gentle, subtle way we encourage people to volunteer for ushering and hosting our Oneg Shabbat.

• How Christopher Brady (the son of Bob, our custodian) knows all the Shabbat and holiday songs.

• The Religious School hallways at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday evenings.

• The fact that members in Manalapan, Freehold, Colts Neck and Old Bridge will get this Newsletter in time for Pesach.

• Service Attendance slips.

• The looks on out�f-town visitors' faces when they come to TRT for the first time on P*U*R*I*M. First they walk in to find two hundred people in costumes, and then comes the introduction: -Mom and Dad, I'd like you to meet our rabbi..."

SEE, I told you there was a lot to love! And when it all starts to get you down, when everything looks black, when nothing could possibly go right-remember that it could be worse: you could belong to a different temple!

I March is here. Spring is just around the comer. It's time to see the TRT family come out of their homes and spend some time down at Mohawk Drive.

The spring is an interesting and challenging time at TRT. Much of the work for the current year is behind us, and the plans for next year are beginning to take shape. The Finance Committee has been working on the budget for next year.

Shortly, we will be conducting a survey about TRT -what you like, suggestions for next year or for the future. It is difficult for the Board of Directors to know what your feelings are as most congregants do not attend the Board of Directors' meetings each month or the Congregational meetings scheduled three times a year.

The Board of Directors will review the proposed budget at its March meeting. The proposed budget then goes to you for your review. At the Congregational meeting in April, the congregation will vote on the budget. Also at this meeting, the floor will be open for nominations to the Board of Directors. Both of these items are critical to TRT. You can make a difference if you care enough to spend a few hours with us to discuss your concerns and preferences.

The Congregational meeting in May is for the election of the Board of Directors for next year. Again, this is your chance to voice your opinion.

I hope to see you at one of the meetings. Make a difference. Show us you care.

I RELIGIOUS SCHOOL I Shalom! I just returned from a most stimulating and exciting conclave with our 8th and 9th graders at Camp Kutz. Once again our children have demonstrated how special and precious they are. They were fully involved with all aspects of this extraordinary experience. They were "Israelis" and "Arabs" negotiating for peace in the Middle East; they became U.S. Senators, fighting and arguing about our national budget. I was impressed to see their Jewish values reflected in their discussion. We are blessed with a unique bunch of teenagers. We hope to God that your and our teachings will always adhere to them.

If you did not attend services on Friday, January 17th, you missed hearing our religious school choir singing at its best. I would like to thank all the participants: Matt Aptaker, Jon Cooper, Lisa Berman, Tara Derris, Hayley Derris, Shelby Ebert, Brandon Gross, Heather Kotler, Jennie Lipman, Jason Messinger, Jill Mosseri, Adam Schwartz and Brian Zinno And a special thanks goes to Robert Segall, the choir director, for his love and dedication. It was wonderful to be part of this service.

Next year the choir will begin rehearsing in January and will meet on Monday evenings, 6:30 - 7: 15 p.m. The choir is open to all 4th - 7th grade students.

The religious school has its own camera! Thank you, Horaiynu, for your gift. Marty, my husband, thanks you too-now he finally has his camera back!

I SISTERHOOD I Would you be interested in an enjoyable evening in the month of May, giving you the opportunity to meet your Temple family and have fun at the same time? Last year's Goods and Services auction was hilarious and was a huge success!

The auction is a simple idea: congregants and local merchants are asked to donate goods and services which are auctioned off (by a professional auctioneer, engaged for the evening) with the proceeds going to the Temple.

As a congregant, we ask you to search for a way to donate either goods (merchandise) or a service. With a little creativity, everyone can come up with something to offer. Here are a few examples of last year's donations:

M EN' S CLUB I On February 23, the Men's Club sponsored a blood drive on behalf of the entire Congregation. In the next Newsletter, I will report the results of our efforts.

March will bring two events for the whole family. First, on March 15, Men's Club will hold the annual Purim Carnival. This year there wiJI be special tournaments for exciting prizes. As usual, we are also sponsoring a trip to the Jewish Community Center in Deal for an afternoon of swimming.

I SOCIAL JUSTICE I Community Relations:

Our community relations program is off to a fantastic start. On February 28th, we welcome the choir from the Wicker Memorial Baptist Church, who are joining us for a Friday evening service. In the true spirit of fellow­ship, we have been invited to conduct a service as the Wicker Memorial Church on Sunday, April 26th at 3:00 p.m. Our religious school junior choir will be performing at the service, which Rabbi Weber and our committee are planning. All members of the congregation are welcome to participate. Those who wish to do so should call Annette Rudnick at 431-8826.

The entire congregation is invited to and encouraged to worship as a community at this very special event. The Wicker Memorial Baptist Church is located on Greenwood Road in the Morganville section of Marlboro Township, which is just off of Tennent Road. Please join us.

Food Basket:

We would like to thank all religious school students (and their parents) in grades 4 , 5, 6, and 7, for their generous contributions to our Food Basket Program which began last month. This month, our focus will be on the third grade. We are certain that all of our third graders will also enthusiastically fill our food baskets as they learn valuable lessons about feeding the hungry.

Later this month, our high school students will begin a special food collection for Passover. Kosher for Passover food items from this drive will be distributed to needy Jewish families in conjunction with the Jewish Family Services.

The Social Justice Committee would like to give special thanks to Edna Coleman and the entire religious school faculty for their participation and support in this program.

Like a raffle that EVERYBODY WINS, these fabulous books offer thousands of dollars in savings, all at LOCAL stores and restaurants including Freehold Raceway Mall, Shop Rite and Foodtown! Use them yourselves, or give them to your kids to help them stretch their allowances. They are only $10 a book (with TRT keeping 50% of each sale), so stop by, take a look, and you will agree that there is no easier way to make money for yourselves and the Temple. Buy several, because they are only available for a limited time.

On Sunday, March 29th, we will be offering another fantastic deal that you won't want to miss. It's Family Photo Day at TRT. For ONLY $5.00 you will receive a beautiful 10 x 13 color portrait of your family. Packages will also be available and will be ready well before Mother's Day. My family just had this done at my parents' temple, and I can assure you that there was absolutely no pressure to buy more than your $5.00 portrait, the prices for buying extra were much less than you would normally pay, the quality of the pictures was outstanding, and the photographers were a pleasure to work with. If you have not already made an appointment for your family, do it today!!

Tuesday, March 31st, will be our official welcome to Spring for the women of TRT and their friends. Join us as we "Spring into Fashion" at Freehold (formerly Sheraton) Gardens. We will see a firsthand look at the Spring collection of "Barbara & Company" and "Smith Brothers." At the same time we will be enjoying a relaxing and fun evening out. NEWS AND NOTES I ACTIONS OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS

The Board confirmed the following Rental policy for the Sanctuary: If a Temple member requests the use of the Sanctuary for a private religious function (Le., baby naming or marriage ceremony) with no food and no need of maintenance assistance, a $50. donation to a Temple Fund of their choice would be requested as the only charge.

00 YOU HAVE A SEDER TO ATTEND? CAN YOU INVITE A FAMILY TO YOURS?

"Let all who are hungry come and eat. .. " are more than words in the "script" of the Haggadah. We hope that every Jew will have a place to go for a seder, and that those who have seders will open their doors not only to Elijah, 'but to people who have no seder to attend.

Sometimes, families have no seder because relatives moved away; sometimes, it is just because no one knows how to make a seder. In either case, after sharing a seder with temple members, most people come to see how easy it is to do it on their own. Then they can invite others to their seder!

If you are having a seder, either first or second night of Pesach, and can invite one or more people to join you, please let us know the number you can accommodate. If you do not have a seder to attend, let us know that, too! Call Rabbi Weber as soon as possible, and let Temple Rodeph Torah do a little Pesach matchmaking.

ARE YOU PLANNING AN UNVEILING ON WNG ISLAND?

Due to the tremendous distance involved in travelling to Long Island cemeteries, Rabbi Weber has set a date for anyone wishing him to officiate at an unveiling there this Spring. The date is Sunday, June 14, 1992.

If you are having an unveiling at New Montefiore, Mount Ararat, Wellwood or Pinelawn cemeteries, please call the rabbi as soon as possible to make the arrangements.

If you would like information about doing the ritual of unveiling yourself, please contact the rabbi. He will be happy to help you with the details, and to answer all your questions!

Did you know that most of our members joined Rodeph Torah because they knew someone who already belonged? Your invitation to a neighbor or friend to join you at a service is the best advertis­ing we have. We are happy to send our Newsletter to any interested family, but we can't do it until you tell us who they are. Call Ellen Finkelstein, our Membership Chairperson, at 972-8624 and give her the names; she will take it from there. Think about what belonging to Rodeph Torah means to you, and help us reach out to others. (Besides, you can always use another driver for the carpooL.)

RED CROSS OPENS HOLOCAUST FILES FOR SURVIVORS

The Red Cross recently announced that it has gained access to German records of deportations, arrests and murders of hundreds of thousands of Jews during the Holocaust. It has opened these records to survivors who want to learn about the fate of their relatives and friends, and will assist you in your search.

At this time we do not know how the process will work, or how helpful the Red Cross personnel will be. However, they have created an '800' phone number for those wishing to make inquiries. The number is 800-848-9277.

Rabbi Weber requests that you advise him of the results of any searches made through this service.
