The robotics teams selected for SPEEA STEM grants are listed below. All the sponsored teams include a SPEEA member as a mentor, coach or parent. The grant requests went through a member-driven review process and the recommend-ed funding levels were voted on by the Northwest Council.

‘Hunger Never Stops’ food driveOn March 9, SPEEA kicked off the annu-al food drive for the Puget Sound Labor Agency (PSLA) food bank in Seattle and its Everett partner. Shown here are Seattle (Plant II) Council Rep Joseph Asaif and Lynda Maynard, SPEEA Teller and food drive contributor. Member donations help PSLA tap into a grant from the Feinstein Foundation determined by the amount donated to PSLA between now and the end of April. The greatest need is for pro-tein (tuna, SPAM, chili, for example). Look for a SPEEA collection box in your area or ask a Puget Sound Council Rep.

GAO professionals vote to join IFPTE Local 1921

In an 86% yes vote, professional support specialists gained the power of collective bargaining and a voice in the workplace.

They recently voted to join nearly 2,000 analysts and other professionals represented by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) IFPTE Local 1921. “This successful vote will allow us to work with management to improve working conditions at GAO, thereby improving operations, saving money, and retaining an

engaged and professional workforce,” said Lorene Sarne, an educator within GAO’s Learning Center. The professional support specialists include accountants, educators, executive assistants, and IT specialists. GAO is often referred to as the congress-ional ‘watchdog.’ It is an independent, non-partisan federal agency responsible for assist-ing Congress in its oversight of the federal government, including investigating how it spends taxpayer dollars.

Make a difference – judge at a science fair

Being a science fair judge can have lasting impact.

Just ask Gary Foss, an Associate Technical Fe l low and SPEEA member.  He’s recruiting volunteers to help with this year’s Washington St a t e S c i ence and E n g i n e e r i n g Fa i r (WSSEF), Friday, March

30, and Saturday, March 31, in Bremerton. “When I was in high school in eastern Washington, I entered a couple of science fairs and did pretty well.  In fact, one of my awards included a factory tour of Boeing in 1966.” said Foss, who works in the Structural Dynamics Lab at Boeing Test & Evaluation. “It’s probably the biggest rea-son I got interested in engineering.”Foss said they are expecting nearly 600 stu-

dents who will be looking for feedback and insight on their projects. “The most important part of judging is the encouragement that students get from talk-ing to professionals who understand and appreciate their work,” he said.

Washington State Science and Engineering FairBremerton High School gymnasium, 1500 13th St., Bremerton

• Friday, March 30, judge’s training starts at 3 p.m. for grades 1-6

• Saturday, March 31, judges training starts at 7:30 a.m. for grades 7-12

Judges are needed for either or both days. Complimentary meals and refreshments will be served. For more details, go to www.wssef.org.

Deadline to apply for Tech Principal

If you’re in the SPEEA-Technical bar-gaining unit, you can apply to join the ranks of Technical Principals, a select

group of technical specialists considered experts in their area. The deadline to apply is April 20, with candidate application packages and letters of recommendation due by June 15. Employees identif ied as Technical Principals are recognized as outstand-ing technical specialists whose expertise, leadership, and technical contributions

enhance and improve Boeing products, processes, tools, and services. The Tech Principals are part of the Technical Excellence Program covered in the SPEEA contracts. The overall pro-gram includes Associate Technical Fellows (Techs and Profs can apply) and Technical Fellows (Profs only). Look for more information, includ-ing an application process timeline, on the Boeing intranet (search for Technical Principal).

Apply for NW delegate

Would you like to know more about SPEEA’s affiliation with the Council of Engineers and

Scientists Organization (CESO) and can take an active role as liaison? Apply to run for Northwest delegate. Applications are due by Thursday, April 26. CESO is a national coalition of labor unions representing white-collar pro-fessionals. They meet and advocate in Washington, D.C., with members of Congress on behalf of scientists, engineers and other professionals. The regional delegates provide reports to the Northwest Council following CESO meetings, which typically occur twice a year in Washington, D.C. SPEEA Midwest delegates also attend. You must be a member in good standing for the past two years. Send a 200-word (max) platform statement to [email protected] by Thursday, April 26. Eligible candidates are invited to give a two-minute address before a vote by the Northwest Council Reps at the May meeting.

Congressman meets with unionsSPEEA Treasurer Jimmie Mathis (left) and SPEEA Council Chair Joel Funfar (right) met with U.S. Rep. Adam Smith (D-WA 9th district), who addressed a group of about 50 labor leaders March 13. Smith spoke at the Teamsters Local 763 in Tukwila about current developments in Congress. Several other labor unions were represented, including the machinists, professional and technical employees, flight attendants, letter carriers, longshore workers, government workers and hotel workers, as well as the Washington State Labor Council (WSLC).
