MERCY CORNER Just as Jesus was able to heal the physical ail-ments of those who simply touched his cloak, we too can attain God’s mercy for our spiritual ailments by asking for forgiveness in the Sacra-ment of Reconciliation. In this divine encoun-ter, the mercy that God offers us is both gratui-tous and mysterious.
March 15, 2020 Third Sunday of Lent
Third Sunday of Lent Theme: Jesus is the Living Water Breaking Open the Word Suggested text for faith sharing: Today’s Gospel, the short form Step One: Listen to the Word In this long story, what image or scene did you see in your mind’s eye? What phrase or word caught your ear? Step Two: Look into Your Life Question for Children: How do you experience Jesus helping and loving you? Question for Youth: Jesus revealed himself to an outcast of society. How can you be “living water” to the outcasts of your school? Society? The world? Question for Adults: When you are tempted to try to satisfy your “thirst for meaning” through some other means, what keeps you coming back to the living water of intimacy with Christ? Through what means do you expe-rience Christ’s power in your life: Sacraments? Scripture? Prayer? Others?

Book Club: Book to Discuss: “Hide-n-Seek”, by Stephen Walker. We will be meeting on Wednesday, April 1, at 2:00pm in The Jesus School, Second Floor. All are welcome! Any questions, please call: Beth Lange 908-672-1731
Clothing Ministry: We will also look at ongoing ways the ministry can help fami-lies throughout the year, including helping families with chil-dren who will be receiving sacraments. Any questions, please contact Barbara Durning-McHenry: [email protected]
Evening Prayer: On May 14th, and repeating every second Thursday of the month, we will have an Evening Prayer Service at St. John's. There will be no Evening Prayer in April.
Funeral Mass Assistance Ministry: St. John’s has established a new ministry called Funeral Mass Assistance. Our objective is to help you through your time of loss to design an appropriate and meaningful remembrance of the deceased’s life on earth. The ministry is also available to make Funeral Mass arrangements in advance so the loved one’s wishes for their Funeral Mass are honored. Members of the ministry will help in selecting scripture readings and music. The ministry can be contacted through the church office at: 609-397-3350, ext. 3.
Senior Social Ministry: If you have an interest in helping the senior citizens in our area, please bring your ideas and join us in the Jesus School building. We will meet in a second floor classroom on the first Wednesday of each month. Next meeting is April 8th at 7:00pm.
Tutoring Ministry: We are beginning to form a tutoring ministry at St. John's. Many parishioners have expressed an interest in helping both adults and children in languages, including ESL, general schoolwork, and financial counseling. If you or someone you know needs assistance, or would like to join this effort as a volunteer, please contact us. Judy Rudderow email: [email protected]
Welcome Committee: Welcome Sunday will be held for all new parishioners on March 22nd following the 11:00AM Mass. We will be having a history tour of the church for anyone interested. All are invited!
Women’s Retreat Group: This past weekend we had the opportunity to spend time at San Alfonso Retreat Center in Long Branch, NJ with over 100 other women from NY, NJ, and PA. It was truly an outstanding retreat which was evidenced by the fact that many women return each year anywhere from 5 to 45 consecutive years to attend this remarkable place for quiet reflection, spiritual growth and bond-ing with other women. It was an amazing sight to see women of all ages but especially ones with walkers and wheelchairs mak-ing their way to the altar on Sunday to receive a certificate of attendance! Please prayerfully consider marking these dates on your calendars for March 5-7, 2021 to attend this special place. www.sanalfonsoretreats.org Any questions, please contact Kathy Ronning at [email protected]
March 15, 2020 Third Sunday of Lent
March 15, 2020—3rd Sunday of Lent “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again.” John 4:13 Jesus reminds us that material things, even some-thing as basic as water, can never satisfy us for long. When we build our lives around material possessions we always want more. True Joy and Peace only comes when we follow Jesus; when we become more “God-centered” and less “self-centered”.
“Mary: A Biblical Walk with the Blessed Mother” began on January 22nd and will be held on Wednes-days listed below at 7:00pm in the Jesus School. This will be an eight week program.
Meetings at 7:00PM on the following Wednesdays: March 18th and 25th April 1st

Saint of the Week
March 15, 2020 Third Sunday of Lent
Weekly Reflection March 15, 2020 Third Sunday of Lent Reflection by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson
“Water, water everywhere , nor any drop to drink.” These are lines from Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s epic poem “The Rime of the An-cient Mariner.” The speaker, a sailor on a becalmed ship, is sur-rounded by salt water that he cannot drink. A paradox caught by the poet. That sailor represents a person in the midst of plenty who cannot partake in it.
For our ancient religious ancestors living in a small town, the well was an integral part of their daily routine. It was a natural setting for the women of the town, whose daily chores included fetching the water for the family household each morning before the heat of the day. Here they could chat with one another and add a little gos-sip. But one special day in that long ago time, around lunchtime, the town well was to be the place where God was to sit down for a chat with one of his sad creatures. That happened to be a woman, a member of the despised Samaritans, herself with a tawdry back-ground. That last was probably why she came so late to the well, so that she did not have to face the other women. The handsome young Jew seated there asked her for a drink, which request so shocked her that her defenses went on high alert. This was so un-conventional. So forbidden. She naturally questioned Him. He ignored the racial issue she brought up to throw Him off track. Je-sus ignored that dodge, and went on to offer her something He called “living water.” If she had only known that what He really meant was “divine life, revelation, and wisdom” a chance to be a new person! If only! But it was when Jesus brought up her check-ered marital record that she was really startled and tried to change the subject and quickly concluded He was a prophet. She must have darted back to town with her conclusion because a little later they came to the well and openly declared that he was the “Savior of the world.” We are not told if the Apostles returning with lunch were over their initial shock at seeing Jesus conversing with a Samaritan woman in broad daylight to grasp what the townspeople said.
Why this story for us in Lent? There are many possible reasons, but I thought of one derived from an extended meaning of those poetic lines from Coleridge’s 19th century poem. Instead of literal water, we are nonetheless surrounded by the refreshing “water” of God’s mercy aplenty as dispensed by His Church in the sacrament of Rec-onciliation. Call it by its former name “Penance” or its nickname “Confession”; it is the same sacramental channel of grace. It is the refreshment for our thirsty souls, springing from a well that never runs dry. So why are so many of us letting our souls be parched these days? It cannot be that sin is no longer being committed, right?
I grant you that we can be so misled by our present culture, dispens-ing as it does easy excuses for sinful behavior which only a few years ago was commonly held to be sinful. Evils like abortion, ho-mosexual acts and even so-called “same sex marriage”, or drug use deemed “recreational”? Could it be that headlines about high gov-ernment officials caught lying endorses that as acceptable to God? Remember that God’s word is beyond time and the popular trends of any age, is it not?
Mark of Arethusa, Bishop, d. c. 365
Mark was the bishop of Arethusa (in present day Syria), and he had gained many converts to Christianity, but he was punished for this and eventually tortured and killed. And even though he himself was an old man at this time, Mark did not yield to his tormentors. His strength was so strong that they feared if they killed him, he would only draw more people to the faith. So they released him and his good work continued.
Saint Mark is honored primarily in the eastern and Orthodox churches on March 29.
Saint Mark's message today: It is never easy to stand up for one’s beliefs. Most of us will not have to endure torture to sup-port our values and standards. But we can’t turn away from our faith because someone ridicules us.
Are you strong enough to endure scorn and mockery for your faith?

Honors loved ones, serves African Mission
Caritas Chamber Chorale will present a series of Len-ten concert of sacred music, entitled Into Your Hands, for the benefit of Adorno Fathers’ African Mission. Featuring the beloved Fauré Requiem and movements of the new work Requiem – A Beginning by Caritas Composer in Residence, Wayne Dietterick, the program honors and remembers those who have gone before. Other works, such as Gesualdo’s stunning O vos omnes and Trotta’s Into Your Hands bridge our loved ones’ passing to the hope and promise of Christ’s sacrifice on the Cross. Cari-tas Chamber Chorale is joined by Simply Strings and Wayne Dietterick on organ for this concert. A freewill offering will benefit the St. Francis Caracciolo Mission in Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo, Africa.
St. John’s Carnevale Thank you all for making St. John's Carnevale celebration a huge success. Over 120 parishioners joined together with old friends and new ones with laughter and conversation filling the room. It was a lively crowd and the dancers were out in full force. The festive decorations set the stage for an evening filled with wonderful live music, delicious food and beverages. Much gratitude goes out to the entire Carnevale committee for all of the hard work before, during and after the event. A spe-cial thank you to the numerous parishioners who donated gen-erously to help offset some of the costs involved.

DIOCESE OF METUCHEN
March 15, 2020 Third Sunday of Lent
2020 Bishop’s Annual Appeal Stepping Forward in Faith: Grace in Action By now you have received a letter from Bishop Checchio invit-ing your participation in the 2020 Bishop’s Annual Appeal. The diocesan ministries supported by the Appeal directly im-pact many of the parishioners here in St. John the Evangelist. Your gift provides formation opportunities for our catechists, youth and young adults. Among other important ministries, your sacrificial gift supports our renewed efforts in Evangeliza-tion & Communication. If you have yet to make your pledge to this year’s Bishop’s Annual Appeal, you will have the opportunity to do so next weekend, March 21/22, which has been designated as Bishop’s Annual Appeal In-Pew Weekend. Please prayerfully consider a gift to the Bishop’s Annual Appeal to help our parish reach its goal. If we can exceed our goal, 50% of the amount collected over goal will be returned to us in the form of a parish rebate. Just as important as our financial goal is our goal of reaching 100% participation. Every gift, no matter the size, is important and greatly appreciated. Thank you. Gracias.
