TRANSCRIPT
J ohn’s gospel is known for its long
passages of dialogue, but of all the
gospels, the conversation Jesus has with
the woman at the well is the longest
Jesus has with anyone.
It begins with a very ordinary descrip-
tion of Jesus; ‘tired by the journey, Je-
sus sat by a well.’ While he is catching
his breath, a woman arrives at the well
and Jesus begins the conversations with
a simple request: he asks her for a drink.
She is surprised that a stranger would
speak to her in public. Then she sees
that he is a Jew. She is a Samaritan and
they were not on speaking terms with
Jews at all.
As Jesus slowly talks and listens to her,
he tells her that he the one who brings
life and that whoever drinks of his wa-
ter will never thirst again. They will
have a spring of living and life-giving
water deep within them – forever. He
reveals who he is: the Messiah and he
also shows her who she is and more im-
portantly who she can be. She just came
to collect water, but she is going to re-
ceive so much more because of her en-
counter with this man. She accepts Je-
sus’ invitation saying; ‘Sir, give me this
water, so that I may never thirst
again.’ At that moment she is changed
and transformed; she becomes a new
person at a deep and personal level. The
conversation led to an experience and
encounter with Jesus through which her
eyes, heart and whole life were opened
up to a whole new way of living. She
left the well, bursting with the good
news, ran back to the village and told

everyone what had hap-
pened to her and whom
she had met. Many be-
lieved in Jesus because of
her; she became a mis-
sionary disciple.
Are we so different from
this great woman? Every
time we pray and go to
mass we are offered the
opportunity to experience
and encounter Jesus. Je-
sus offers us his very self
and life through his Body
and Blood. Once we ac-
cept his invitation, as she
did, we will never be hun-
gry or thirsty again. Jesus
offers us his greatest gift
to satisfy our deepest
needs and desires. Can we
open our hearts and lives
to Jesus so that we too
can be changed and trans-
formed into the people he
wants us to be? Times of
prayer and especially the
Eucharist, are our well
today – these are times
and places where we meet
Jesus who longs to talk
and listen to us.
At the end of every mass
we hear the words, ‘Go
now to love and serve the
Lord.’ Having experi-
enced Jesus in a profound
way, we are asked to do
what the woman at the
well did. We are asked to
leave the well to go and
share what we have seen,
heard and experienced.
We too are called and
challenged to become
missionary disciples. She
didn’t stay at the well
and neither can we.
For Prayerful Considera-
tion:
I take a moment of
prayerful silence; I thank
God for the gift of Jesus
in the Eucharist.
How am I being called to
be a person of Good News
today?

REMEMBER AND BE TRANSFORMED
“Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed them to those who were reclin-
ing, and also as much of the fish as they wanted.”—John 6:11
D id you know that our word “Lent” comes from the Old-English word for
“springtime?” This gives us a wonderful insight into what the days between Ash
Wednesday and Holy Thursday are all about: a season when faith and the virtues of
the Christian life grow and flower within our hearts and souls. But, as Ash Wednes-
day approaches each year, one of the first questions we Catholics ask is, “What
should I give up for Lent?” And it’s a fair question because, as we know, penance
is a part of Lent.
So, how do you or your family and friends answer this question? Do you give up so-
cial media? Television? Chocolate, or another favorite food? Soft drinks, coffee, or
alcohol? While it’s true that taking a break from any of those can be good for us, we
also have to ask ourselves if these sacrifices are really helping us to grow in our lives
as Christians. Lent isn’t only about doing penance. We have to think of other oppor-
tunities for “good works” during the Lenten Season.
The traditional works of prayer, almsgiving, and fasting help us focus our attention
on what is most important in life. If we can think of our Lenten penance as a “good
work” to be taken on and shift our focus away from what we “give up,” we will find
that our Lenten prayer and devotions will be richer and more fruitful. As Henri
Nouwen has reminded us: “Lent is a time of returning to God… a time of refocusing,
of re-entering the place of truth, of reclaiming our true identity.”

PRAYER
O God, author of every mercy and of all goodness,
who in fasting, prayer, and almsgiving
have shown us a remedy for sin,
look graciously on this confession of our lowliness,
that we, who are bowed down by our conscience,
may always be lifted up by your mercy.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy
Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
Amen.
(from the Roman Missal)
But, there’s more at stake because, as we reflect on all of this,
we have to remember that Lent isn’t an end in itself. The pur-
pose of the season of Lent is to help us prepare for Easter when
we will renew our baptismal commitment.
In the first centuries after Jesus, those individuals who wanted
to become Christians spent months and even years preparing
for Baptism, which almost always took place in a special cere-
mony on the night before Easter. That night was anticipated
by a time of prayer and fasting so that the soon-to-be Chris-
tians would be as ready as they could be to receive the gifts of
Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. This is the origin of
Lent. (Our contemporary process of the Rite of Christian Initi-
ation of Adults (RCIA) is built around this model of initiation.)
Those Christians who were already baptized would also pray
and fast as they prepared to renew their own commitment to
Christ by renewing their baptismal promises on Easter Sunday.
If we keep the themes of Baptism and discipleship in mind as
we consider the value of fasting and sacrifice, we quickly realize
that fasting isn’t about just giving up something we enjoy. Af-
ter all, there isn’t any real spiritual value in giving up choco-
late or soft drinks. The point of fasting is that we give up some-
thing that we enjoy to help us pay better attention to our deep-
er hungers and desires.
Each one of us lives with needs—physical needs and the need
for love, security, and community—that we often bury or try
to hide by filling our lives with “stuff” and relationships that
can never really make us happy or give us peace. And so, Len-
ten fasting means that we set aside those things with which we
self-medicate so that we can be free to recognize what our real
hungers and desires are—including our desire for God.
Only God can truly satisfy the deepest desires and needs of our
hearts.
These ideas of baptismal renewal and our deepest hungers are
at the heart of our readings on this 3rd Sunday of Lent. As we
hear the story of the woman at the well, we are being invited to
remember our own Baptism and to think about how our lives
have been—and are being—transformed by the Living Water
of Jesus. Our prayer, fasting, and works of charity and mercy
should be helping us become more aware of how the grace of
Baptism is at work within us.
In the end, every Easter Sunday we are given an opportunity
to renew the promises of our Baptism. This means rededicating
ourselves to live as Christians in the world, and to continuing
the mission of Jesus, especially for the poor and those in need.
The 40 days of Lent are a time for us to get back to the basics
of who we are as followers of Jesus.

suitable substitute for the real thing.
There is one joy that remains
throughout all our days: the joy we
find in Jesus. What he gives us does
not fade. The amazing thing about
what he offers us is that it also pro-
vides a lens through which we see all
things. Now we can see the smallest
reasons to be grateful. We no longer
have a life where we go from one cel-
ebration to another with the ordi-
nary in between. All life and time are
extraordinary! All gifts, great and
small, are precious. This offering
seems too good to be true, so what’s
the catch? Like all gifts given to us,
for the gift to have meaning, we
must be willing to receive it. The
choice is yours. You can live in the
ordinary, or you can revel in the ex-
traordinary, now and forever.

THE 6 CHARACTERISTICS FOR LENT: GRATEEFUL
H appy Birthday! It may or may
not be your birthday now, but
I know it will be coming up at some
point. I hope you receive many cool
presents and get to spend quality time
with friends and family. On special
days like birthdays, Christmas, and
anniversaries, it is good to celebrate.
After all, we need some fun and cele-
bration in our lives.
But what about the day after? Presents
remain, but the presence of others may
be over, and it is back to the daily
grind. Yesterday, you were filled with
gratitude. You hold the memory of
yesterday still close so that fuels you
for the day. However, how about 2, 3,
or 4 days from then? The truth is that
many joys in this life cannot stay with
us forever. They belong to a certain
place in time. We will have our memo-
ries, yet those thoughts will never be a

L ent is a 40-day period leading up to Easter, beginning
with Ash Wednesday. Lent is a penitential season. That
means it is an opportunity to examine your life, give your
struggles to God, and invite him to help you become the-best-
version-of-yourself. During Lent, there is a strong focus on
prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. All these spiritual exercises
help prepare us for the celebration of the passion, death, and resurrection of
Jesus. (Source: www.dynamiccatholic.com)

2PREVENTING THE SPREAD OF COVID-19 The Diocese of Calgary continues to monitor Alberta
Health Services directives and our local situation re-
garding active cases of the coronavirus (COVID-19). At
this time, Bishop McGrattan is requesting that all par-
ishes immediately implement the following measures:
• At the Sign of Peace, refrain from shaking hands –
a simple bow, nod, or “Peace be with you” to your
neighbour is appropriate.
• Baptismal and Holy Water fonts are to be emptied
and are to be sanitized with water and bleach.
• Holy Communion will only be distributed under
the Body of Christ (Host).
• Only priests may distribute Holy Communion to
those who choose to receive on their tongue at a
designated area apart from the main aisle. Note: It
has been shared by some public health experts that
there is no indication of increased risk of infection
in receiving the host either on the tongue or in the
hand.
• Those who choose to receive Holy Communion in
the hand will be asked to approach the Extraordi-
nary Ministers of Holy Communion or a priest who
is not distributing Communion to those receiving
on the tongue.
• Only priests are to consume the Precious Blood.
• Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion who
feel uncomfortable distributing Holy Communion
should be excused from this ministry.
Please also continue to practice healthy hygiene – wash
your hands with soap or use hand sanitizer regularly,
remain at home if you are sick, sneeze or cough into
your sleeve, and avoid touching your eyes, nose or
mouth. Let us continue to care for ourselves and one
another as we pray for all those affected worldwide by
COVID-19. These measures are effective immediately
and will remain in place until notified otherwise by the
Diocese.

PRAY THE ROSARY WITH OUR LADY OF FATIMA "The power of the Rosary is beyond de-
scription," said Venerable Fulton Sheen.
It’s a potent, saint-making prayer. A
spiritual weapon so powerful it has de-
feated armies and changed world histo-
ry. It can resolve personal problems,
rescue souls from eternal death, and con-
quer despair. This Lent is the perfect
time to unlock the power of the Rosary and grow in
holiness. Starting the first weekend in Lent you and
your family are invited to bring the statue of our Lady
of Fatima into your home and pray the Rosary daily
with our Lady for her intercessions. Our lady will be
sent home during each weekend mass and then re-
turned the following weekend for another family to
take home. Transform your relationship with Jesus
through the Rosary.
