GATHERING

WELCOME Donald R. FramptonVOLUNTARY Steven B. BlackmonANNOUNCEMENTS*CALL TO WORSHIP (responsive) from Psalm 107 Stephanie Haniford

O give thanks to the Lord, who is good; God’s steadfast love endures forever.Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, those whom God redeemed from trouble. Let

them thank the Lord for his steadfast love and wonderful works to all people. For God satisfies the thirsty, and fills the hungry with good things. Let us worship God!

*PRAYER OF THE DAY *HYMN 71 “Surely, It is God Who Saves Me” first songCALL TO CONFESSION (responsive) John 3:19 Philip L. Stagg

This is the judgment, that the light has come into the world, for people loved darkness rather than light because their deeds were evil.

Let us uncover our sin before the liberating light of Christ. PRAYER OF CONFESSION (unison) Numbers 21:4-6

Merciful God, we confess the folly of our sin and the hypocrisy of our complaints. We grumble about the evils in our world without taking an honest look at our own unjust practices. We protest the problems of our community despite doing little to address them ourselves.

Merciful God, expose our sins before the light of your grace. Heal our sin and free us from our foolish ways that we may know the joy of eternal life in Jesus Christ, in whose name we pray. Amen.

SILENT CONFESSIONKYRIE Lord, have mercy upon us; Christ have mercy upon us; Lord, have mercy upon us.DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS (responsive)

Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven.

Thanks be to God.

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (unison), The Apostles' Creed I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,

born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting. Amen.

And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling,

Feasting on the WordJoin us each week for a deeper exploration of the biblical texts of that day’s service. Our understanding of the Scriptures, read and proclaimed in worship, will be reinforced and expanded during this discussion.Led by: Michael O’Keefe, Bob Smith, and Amy Morriss | Land Building, Riverside

Archaeology of EasterWe see representations of both the Crucifixion and the Resurrection in art throughout the Christian era, but a lot of our understanding is based on modern, Western analogies for capital punishment, death, and burial. The class will explore some background information that can help us understand the context of Jesus' death, burial, and resurrection in 1st Century Levant. Through this context, we will develop a richer understanding of the Crucifixion and the Resurrection, and how they offer Christians a starting point for the new covenant. Led by: Crorey Lawton | Sundays, through April 5 | Library

UPCOMING CLASS:

Why does God Let Bad Things Happen to Good People? This class will examine the perennial question of suffering and why God allows it. For atheists, suffering proves that God does not exist, but Christianity provides an answer. Geoff Snodgrass will lead the class and moderate discussion based on C.S. Lewis' The Problem of Pain. Led by: Geoff Snodgrass | Sundays, March 22 – April 12 | Land Building Lakeside
