For this weekend’s Bible class we will finish the ninth chapter of the book of Revelation. Please join us!

Our Midweek Lenten Services continue this Wednesday, at 1:00 and 6:30 pm. Our series is entitled “The Searching Questions of Lent.” This week Pastor Naumann will speak on Jesus’ question “Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given Me?” (John 18:10-11). Plan to come and watch with the Savior for an hour.

In our narthex you will find a display of devotional books and other items from the CLC Book House. As a service to our members, you may examine the display copies, and use the order forms provided to purchase any of the items. You may leave the order form and payment in Jessica Lau’s church mailbox, and she will bring your items to church for you to pick up. Or, simply stop by the Book House, which is in the Academic Center at ILC. These items are also available for online purchase at www.clcbookhouse.org.

It’s not too late to participate in serving the Lord and your fellow believers by being an usher for our services. We can use more help! The new schedule is designed to accommodate your preferences for Saturday or Sunday worship attendance and midweek afternoon or evening. If you want to be an usher for 2014, please contact Ron Porath (715-577-0578) or Kevin Hulke (715-832-5140).

Lenten offering envelopes – Offering envelopes for Lenten Wednesday have been printed, and are available on the communion registration table in the fellowship hall. They are meant for anyone who does not regularly use their box of pre-printed envelopes, including those who participate in “Egive” electronic contributions. Please help yourself.

A handy Lenten calendar, which was produced by Pastor Walter Schaller, is available on our narthex table (on light purple paper). Each day has a devotional reading listed. Please help yourself.

Save the Date! -- The God’s Kids Bible Camp is planning its fourth annual spaghetti supper on Wednesday, April 9th

in the fellowship hall at Messiah. Spaghetti with Tomato Marinara and breadsticks will be served. There is no charge for the meal; those wishing to do so will be able to

support the work of the camp through a free-will offering. Serving begins at 5:15 pm and continue until Lenten services begin at 6:30 pm. There will be great fellowship & food for all who attend.

CLC Women’s Retreat – There are purple brochures on our narthex table that provide information on this year’s retreat, which will be held March 28-30 in Winona, MN. Please take a brochure, and contact Beth Kranz with any questions at (715) 544-8289, or [email protected].

The Annual Porkies Camping Trip is scheduled for July 30 - August 3, for youth entering grades 8 -12. Registration forms will be available in March. Parents interested in chaperoning are encouraged to speak with Gerald Oster.

Mankato Arts Camp, 2014 will be held from April 4-6, for grades 5 through 8. Camp begins Friday evening, and there will be a Saturday show at 7 pm. Housing for the campers is provided with "lock-in" accommodations at Immanuel's gym. Camp ends with the students participating in the Sunday, 9:30 am church service. The cost for the cost for the camp is $35, and the deadline for registration is Friday, March 21. See the registration forms on our narthex table for more information. On March 9, Ruth Reim (wife of Pastor Em. Rollin A. Reim) was taken home to the Lord. The memorial service will be planned for some time in April, at St. Stephen of Mountain View, CA. Our prayers are with Ruth’s family in their time of loss. Correspondence can be mailed to:

Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on' " "Yes," says the Spirit, "that they may rest from their labors, and their works follow

them."Revelation 14:13

“I make alive”, say the LORD On February 25 the LORD blessed Dan Colbert and his wife Lindsey nee Barthels with the gift of a baby boy, Ryan Benjamin. Ryan was “born of the flesh” at the hospital in Hudson and was reborn “of water and the Spirit” on Sunday, March 9 in a baptism administered by Pastor Tiefel at a family ceremony at Messiah Church. Krissy and Ben Libby are serving as sponsors. The Baptism was witnessed by Ryan’s parents, brothers (two of whom helped in the baptism), both sets of grandparents and Pastor Naumann.

Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection. Romans 6:3-5

The same LORD also blessed Josh Gurgel and his wife Ashley nee Iverson on March 11 with His special gift of life, a daughter Mallory Lylas. Mallory had the unique experience of being born and reborn on the same day, same place (Luther Hospital). The Baptism was witnessed by grandparents Paul and Barb Gurgel and the Jeremy Gurgel family. Pastor Tiefel served. Dan and Krista Gurgel are serving as sponsors, by proxy.

But when the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward man appeared, not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the

- 5 -

washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior. Titus 3:4-6We join both families in thanking the LORD God for these two precious souls, given also to our family. And we pray that both Ryan and Mallory may be preserved in the Christian faith until each receives the great gift of life eternal, in Christ Jesus.

Baptized in water, Sealed by the Spirit, Cleansed by the blood of Christ our King:

Heirs of salvation, Trusting His promise, Faithfully now God’s praise we sing.

Baptized in water, Sealed by the Spirit, Dead in the tomb with Christ our King:

One with His rising, Freed and forgiven, Thankfully now God’s praise we sing.

Baptized in water, Sealed by the Spirit, Marked with the sign of Christ our King:

Born of one Father, We are His children; Joyfully now God’s praise we sing.

Amen. (WS 752)

The Privilege and Work of a Sponsor

“By proxy” is a phrase we use when a sponsor is not able to be present in person at a baptism. A witness needs to be able to do just that, witness that the Baptism is done in accord with the instruction of Christ, specifically using water and the Word. The work of a sponsor goes beyond the day of the baptism. A sponsor has the privilege of remembering the child in prayers, lending godly advice to the parents about on-going Christian education, being sure that the child continues to receive the Word of God, and reminding the child of the great blessings of Baptism. (Guardianship for the child in the event of the parents’ death has to done with a legal document filed with the state.) Because of the spiritual implications, a sponsor should be of the same confession of faith. A witness, however, needs only to be of sound mind and mature judgment.

Mon Psalm 121 God’s children sing/pray this psalm even when they are not nearing Jerusalem. How so? Because our help comes from the LORD, the Creator of heaven and earth (1-2); because the LORD is our Protector, on guard duty all day and all night (3-6); because the LORD

shall preserve us safe from here to eternity (7-8). This Word of God is as dear to us as Jesus is dear to us, and it assures that we are dear to Jesus. Praise the LORD!

Tues John 3:1-17 Nicodemus was dear to Jesus, too, and came to Jesus as a beggar approaches a rich neighbor. He had seen a glint of Jesus’ treasures (2), and Jesus was ready to share the rest (3). But the way to His treasure house seemed so mysterious (4)! Even when Jesus laid it out for him (5-8), Nicodemus was flummoxed (9). Smart humans don’t understand the cross of Calvary (12-15) until God’s love truly registers on them (16-17). Amen!

Wed Romans 4:1-8/13-17 This line of argument straightens out the Law/ grace factor. Abram is the case-book illustration which proves that salvation comes via God’s grace rather than via human “deservings.” Whereas humans want to save themselves by working through the Commandments, God takes this responsibility upon Himself because He wants salvation to be foolproof and failsafe. Thank You, dear Father in heaven.

- 8 -- 7 -

Thurs Genesis 12:1-9 Jehovah interrupted Abram’s life like this: “I want you to pack up and move out, leaving your clan behind. In compensation I have a new homeland set aside for you; indeed, I am going to give you the special work of bringing My blessing to others (1-3).” So that’s what Abram did (4-6), taking God at His word and exploring his new homeland (8-9).

Fri Luke 9:51-56 The path of salvation led Jesus through Samaria, but since He did not intend to stay long (and rent a suite of rooms, perhaps?), those folks refused to let Him stay even one night in town. When the disciples over-reacted (54), Jesus set them straight, for there is no gain in cutting short anyone’s time of grace. Thank You, dear Jesus.

Sat Titus 3:1-8 God’s children can stand regular reminders like this: Be good citizens all the time (1) and good neighbors, too (2). Remember that God led you out of spiritual squalor (3) in His gentle, loving, self-sacrificing way (4) with no regard for your character or performance – but rather via His mercy alone, mercy that saved you from destruction (5).

That’s what God’s Holy Spirit does when He gets into your heart: He gets you “right” with God for Jesus’ sake. We thank You, holy Trinity.

The Second Weekend in LentMessiah Lutheran Church & School

Pre-service Devotion: Psalm 86:1-5 -- 1 Bow down Your ear, O LORD, hear me; For I am poor and needy. 2 Preserve my life, for I am holy; You are my God; Save Your servant who trusts in You! 3 Be merciful to me, O Lord, For I cry to You all day long. 4 Rejoice the soul of Your servant, For to You, O Lord, I lift up my soul. 5 For You, Lord, are good, and ready to forgive, And abundant in mercy to all those who call upon You.

Pastor: In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

C: A - - men

Pastor: Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God, our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. Our help is in the name of the LORD.

C: Who made heaven and earth.

Pastor: I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the LORD.

C: And You forgave the iniquity of my sin.

Pastor: Almighty God, our Maker and Redeemer, we poor sinners confess unto You that we are by nature sinful and unclean and that we have sinned against You by thought, word, and deed. Wherefore we flee for refuge to Your infinite mercy, seeking and imploring Your grace for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ.

- 1 -

People: O most merciful God, Who has given Your only-begotten Son to die for us, have mercy upon us and for His sake grant us remission of all our sins; and by Your Holy Spirit increase in us true knowledge of You and of Your will, and true obedience to Your Word, to the end that by Your grace we may come to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Pastor: Almighty God, our Heavenly Father, has had mercy upon us and has given His only Son to die for us and for His sake forgives us all our sins. To those who believe on His name He gives power to become the children of God and has promised them His Holy Spirit. He that believes and is baptized shall be saved. Grant this, Lord, unto us all.

The Old Testament Reading – Genesis 12:1-9 Now the LORD had said to Abram: “Get out of your country, From your family And from your father’s house, To a land that I will show you. 2 I will make you a great nation; I will bless you And make your name great; And you shall be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you, And I will curse him who curses you; And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” 4 So Abram departed as the LORD had spoken to him, and Lot went with him. And Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran. 5 Then Abram took Sarai his wife and Lot his brother’s son, and all their possessions that they had gathered, and the people whom they had acquired in Haran, and they departed to go to the land of Canaan. So they came to the land of Canaan. 6 Abram passed through the land to the place of Shechem, as far as the terebinth tree of Moreh. And the Canaanites were then in the land. 7 Then the LORD appeared to Abram and said, “To your descendants I will give this land.” And there he built an altar to the LORD, who had appeared to him. 8 And he moved from there to the mountain east of Bethel, and he pitched his tent with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east; there he built an altar to the LORD and called on the name of the LORD. 9 So Abram journeyed, going on still toward the South.

The Gospel Reading – John 3:1-17

C: Glo - ry be to You, O Lord!

There was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. 2 This man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, "Rabbi, we

- 3 -

know that You are a teacher come from God; for bno one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him." 3 Jesus answered and said to him, "Most assuredly, I say to you, dunless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God." 4 Nicodemus said to Him, "How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?" 5 Jesus answered, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Do not marvel that I said to you, 'You must be born again.' 8 The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit." 9 Nicodemus answered and said to Him, "How can these things be?" 10 Jesus answered and said to him, "Are you the teacher of Israel, and do not know these things? 11 Most assuredly, I say to you, We speak what We know and testify what We have seen, and you do not receive Our witness. 12 If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things? 13 No one has ascended to heaven but He who came down from heaven, that is, the Son of Man who is in heaven. 14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.

Pastor: Blessed are they that hear the Word of God and keep it!

C: Praise be to You, O Christ!

The Apostolic CreedI believe in God the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God

- 4 -

the Father almighty. From there He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Hymn 245 “God Loved the World So that He Gave”From the red Lutheran Hymnal

The Sermon: Romans 4:1-8, 13-17

What then shall we say that Abraham our father has found according to the flesh? 2 For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. 3 For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.” 4 Now to him who works, the wages are not counted as grace but as debt. 5 But to him who does not work but believes on Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness, 6 just as David also describes the blessedness of the man to whom God imputes righteousness apart from works: 7 “Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven, And whose sins are covered; 8 Blessed is the man to whom the LORD shall not impute sin.” ….. 13 For the promise that he would be the heir of the world was not to Abraham or to his seed through the law, but through the righteousness of faith. 14 For if those who are of the law are heirs, faith is made void and the promise made of no effect, 15 because the law brings about wrath; for where there is no law there is no transgression. 16 Therefore it is of faith that it might be according to grace, so that the promise might be sure to all the seed, not only to those who are of the law, but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all 17 (as it is written, “I have made you a father of many nations”) in the presence of Him whom he believed—God, who gives life to the dead and calls those things which do not exist as though they did.
