KAREN FREEMAN-WILSON, CIVIL RIGHTS AND POLITICAL LEADER, TO SPEAK AT LCC

Karen Freeman-Wilson, a political pioneer and advocate of the national drug court movement, visits Eugene as a guest of the Lane Community College Speaker Series, on Thursday, March 1, 2018, at 6:00 p.m. at the Center for Meeting and Learning, Building 19, 4000 E. 30th Ave., Eugene. The event is free and open to the public. Freeman-Wilson will share her experiences as a civil rights activist and community builder.

Freeman-Wilson is the first woman to serve as mayor of Gary, Indiana, and is Indiana’s first African-American female mayor. She is the former executive director of the National Drug Court Institute and previously served as Indiana’s attorney general. Her talk will focus on “Building Strong, Resilient Communities Through Education, Not Incarceration.”

Freeman-Wilson’s public service extends to state and national leadership positions. She is the first vice president of the National League of Cities and chairperson of the criminal and social justice committee of the U.S. Conference of Mayors.

A graduate of Harvard Law School, Freeman-Wilson previously served as the director of the Indiana Civil Rights Commission, and as the presiding judge of the Gary City Court. She is a leader in the national drug court movement and served as the CEO of the National Association of Drug Court Professionals.

A short question-and-answer session will follow Freeman-Wilson’s talk. The Lane Community College Speaker Series is supported by the Roberta Konnie Endowment Fund in the Lane Community College Foundation. The series seeks to connect the campus and community through educational and inspirational events as part of the college’s mission to transform lives through learning.

HIGGINS DISTINGUISHED VISITOR LECTURE

Leading civil procedure scholar and Emmy winner Professor Arthur R. Miller, CBE will present the Higgins Distinguished Visitor Lecture at the Lewis & Clark Law School on March 13, 2018.

Miller and the late Charles Wright co-authored Federal Practice and Procedure, one of the most renowned and well-cited law treatise in the field. The author of more than 40 books and legal articles, Miller is a law professor at New York University and the NYU School of Continuing and Professional Studies.

The 2018 Higgins Distinguished Visitor Lecture will be held at 6:00 p.m. on March 13, 2018 at Lewis & Clark Law School in the Lower Lounge of the Legal Research Center (10015 SW Terwilliger Blvd. Portland ).
