Caution: Do not allow direct sunlight, an inverter fluorescent

light or other strong source of light to shine ontothe players infrared receptor window. Otherwise,the operation of the remote controller may bedisabled.

Bear in mind that operating the remote controllermay cause other devices operated by infrared raysto be operated by mistake.

The remote controller cannot be operated if the

space between the controller and the playersinfrared receptor window is obstructed.

Do not place any objects on top of the remotecontroller.Doing so may cause one or more buttons to beheld down which will cause the batteries to rundown.

LOADING BATTERIES

Before using the remote controller for the first time,load the batteries in the remote controller. Thebatteries provided are used to verify the operationsof the remote controller only.

1. Remove the battery cover.

2. Load the two new size AAA batteries insidethe battery compartment while taking care toalign their polarities correctly with the polaritymarkings ( with ( and with ).

3. Close the battery cover until it clicks shut.

CAUTIONS ON BATTERIES

Use AAA type batteries in this remote controller.

We recommend that you use alkali batteries.

If the remote controller does not operate fromclose to the unit, replace the batteries with newones, even if less then a year has passed.

The included battery is only for verifying operation.Replace it with a new battery as soon as possible.

When inserting the batteries, be careful to do so inthe proper direction, following the + and - marks inthe remote controllers battery compartment.

To prevent damage or battery fluid leakage:- Do not use a new battery with an old one.- Do not use two different types of batteries.- Do not short-circui t, disassemble, heat or

dispose of batteries in flames.

Remove the batteries when not planning to use theremote controller for a long period of time.

If the batteries should leak, carefully wipe off thefluid from the inside of the battery compartment,then insert new batteries.

TURNING ON THE UNIT

1. Turn on the power of the audio equipmentconnected to this unit. Set the input selector onthe audio equipment to this unit.

2. Connect the AC power cable to the wall outlet.

3. Press the POWER ON/OFF button on the unit.Each time the button is pressed, the power ofthe unit switches on/off.

Pressing POWER OFF or SOURCE POWERafter pressing the AMP button on the remotecontroller causes the STANDBY indicator onthe unit to light and puts the unit in STANDBYmode.

To turn the power on while in STANDBY mode,press the AMP button on the remote controller,and then press POWER ON or SOURCEPOWER.

SELECTING AN INPUT SOURCE

Before you can listen to any input media, you mustfirst select the input source on the SR5023.

To select CD, turn the INPUT SELECTOR on thefront panel or press the CD button on the remotecontroller.After you have selected CD, simply turn on the CDplayer and play the CD.

The input name will appear in the display on thefront-panel.

ADJUSTING THE MAIN VOLUME

Adjust the volume to a comfortable level usingthe VOLUME control knob on the front panel orVOLUME3 /4 buttons on the remote controller.To increase the volume, turn the VOLUME knobclockwise or press VOLUME3 button on theremote controller, to decrease the volume, turncounterclockwise or press VOLUME4 button on theremote controller.

Note:

The volume can be adjusted within the range of 90

ADJUSTING THE TONE (BASS & TREBLE)

qYou can control other Marantz products throughthis unit with the remote control by connecting theREMOTE CONTROL terminals on each unit.The signal transmitted from the remote control isreceived by the remote sensor on this unit. wWhenever external infrared sensors or similardevices are connected to RC-5 IN of the SR5023,be sure to always disable operation of the infraredsensor on the main unit by using the followingprocedure.

1. Hold down the S-DIRECT button and BANDbutton on the front panel at the same time for 3seconds.

2. The setting IR=ENABLE is shown on the FLDISPLAY.

change this to IR=DISABLE.4. Press the MUTE button. Once this setting is

made, the infrared sensor on the main unit isdisabled.

TUNER OPERATION (RDS)

Now in use in many countries, RDS (Radio DataSystem) is a description of the stations programminghidden space in the FM signal.This unit is equipped with RDS to assist in theselection of FM stations using station and networknames, rather than broadcast frequencies. AdditionalRDS functions include the ability to search forprogramme types.

RADIO TEXT

Some RDS stations broadcast RADIO TEXT, which isadditional information on the station and programmebeing broadcast.RADIO TEXT information appears as running textin the display. RADIO TEXT is transmitted characterby the radio station. As a result of that it may takesome time until the entire text has been completelyreceived.

RDS DISPLAY

When this unit is tuned to an FM station that istransmitting RDS data, the Front Panel InformationDisplay will automatically show the station name orRADIO TEXT in place of the typical display of thestations broadcast frequency.To change the display, press the T.DISP button onthe remote controller.

PROGRAMME TYPE (PTY) DISPLAY

The RDS system categorizes programmes accordingto their genre into different programme type (PTY)groups. To display the programme type informationof the current station, press the PTY button in theTUNER MODE on the remote controller.

This unit is equipped to automatically search forstations transmitting any of 29 different programmetypes. To search for a PTY, follow these procedures:

1. Press the PTY button in the TUNER MODE onthe remote controller. The current stations PTYwill be displayed, or the currently selected PTYgroup will be displayed in blinking if no stationor RDS data is present.

2. To change to a new PTY type, press theTUNING/PRESET3 or 4button on the frontpanel or numeric or PRESET+or buttonson the remote controller until the desired PTYis shown in the display.

3. Once the desired PTY group or type hasbeen selected, press the PTY button while

the display blink (approx. 5 seconds). ThePTY Auto search will start, and the tuner willpause at each station broadcasting RDS PTYinformation corresponding to the selectedchoice.

4. To advance to the next RDS station with thedesired PTY, press the PTY button again within5 seconds.

REMOTE CONTROL CODE SETTING

The remote control unit contains 3 sets of remotecontrol codes, and it can be used to control up to 3receivers in one location. To control a second or thirdreceiver, select the remote control code as explainedbelow. The selected receiver can be operated fromthe remote control. When the unit is shipped from the factory, the main

unit and remote control are set to RECEIVER1.

1. RECEIVER2To set the remote control to RECEIVER2,hold down both the AMP button and 2 numberbutton on the remote control for at least fiveseconds.

RECEIVER3

To set the remote control to RECEIVER3,hold down both the AMP button and 3 numberbutton on the remote control for at least fiveseconds.

2. Also set the main units remote control settingto the same setting as the remote controller.To change the main units remote control

setting, hold down AMP and press the INFObuttons on the remote controller; the remotecontrol setting (RECEIVER 1, RECEIVER2 or RECEIVER 3) will be displayed inthe display window on the main unit and themain unit setting will be changed to the samesetting as that of the remote controller.

Note:

To set the remote control back to RECEIVER1, holddown both the AMP button and 1 number button onthe remote control for at least five seconds.

TROUBLESHOOTINGIn case of trouble, check the following before calling for service:

1. Are the connections made properly ?2. Are you operating the unit properly following the users guide ?3. Are the power amplifiers and speaker working properly ?

If the unit does not operate properly, check items shown in the following table.If your trouble cannot be recovered with the remedy actions listed in the following table, malfunction of theinternal circuitry is suspected; immediately unplug the power cable and contact your dealer, nearest Marantzauthorized dealer or the Marantz Service Center in your country.

FRONT KEY (BUTTON) LOCK OF THE UNITIf the F/P and T.MODE buttons on the front panel areboth pressed at the same time for three seconds ormore, all the buttons on the front panel, (excludingthe POWER ON/OFF button), as well as the INPUTSELECTOR knob and VOLUME knob, will becomelocked. F-KEY LOCK! will appear in the display.Release the lock by pressing the same two keysagain at the same time for three seconds or more.F-KEY UNLOCK will appear in the display, and thekeys will unlock.

GENERAL MALFUNCTION

If the equipment malfunctions, this may be becausean electrostatic discharge or AC line interference hascorrupted the information in the equipment memorycircuits. Therefore:

- disconnect the plug from the AC line supply

- after waiting at least three minutes, reconnectthe plug to the AC line supply

- re-attempt to operate the equipment

Memory backup

In case a power outage occurs or the powercord is accidentally unplugged, this unit is

equipped with a backup function to preventmemory data such as the preset memoryfrom being erased.

HOW TO RESET THE UNIT

Should the operation or display seem to be abnormal,reset the unit with the following procedure.The SR5023 is turned on, press and hold the MUTEand S.DIRECT buttons simultaneously for 3 secondsor more.Remember that the procedure will reset the settingsof the function selector, TUNER PRESET etc., totheir initial settings.
