We trust our physicians to see what we don’t see, to run tests, to coach us on self-care and prescribe healing medicines for our bodies. Your pastors are Christ’s under-shepherds; they are Called here by God through you, the congregation, to care for your souls.

We do many things without giving an arm’s length consideration before doing them. More than a few people have run over their own gar-bage can in their own driveway because they did not look behind them before they backed up. In the army they talk about soldiers who may as well say, “Ready, shoot, aim.” Do you suppose we could say the same thing about the Lord’s Supper? That is, go through this special event without giving advance consideration of what we are doing? In the pew racks at church are communion cards. The act of reading the words on those cards and signing our name puts us through a spiritual moment of preparation before we come forward. Your pastors and elders encourage everyone who communes to fill out one of those cards, sign it and place it in the offering plate. The cards

also serve as a reminder to your pastors as to what sheep may have special needs, noted because they

have not filled out a card. The card serves a double purpose and each purpose is for the care of our souls.

Missing sheep

Your pastors and elders are hoping to meet the needs of missing sheep, those who have not been with us in worship for some time. Those folks are being contacted and, from their response, we will be able to serve them better. They are being asked to return a membership response card. This card has been in use at OSLC for about a decade. It invites our members to respond with a “Holy Intention” to return to active worship here, share special needs they may have and notify us of changes in their situation. If you know of a missing sheep, consider contacting them as well.

Whatever the reason, the solution is before you. Consider giving a call to the office and ask for a pastor to discuss your situation. Would you like a home visit? Just ask. Your pastors do them all the time and it’s no trouble. Christ is bigger than any obstacle you may have found and the lack of care of your soul has eternal consequences. We are here for you anytime – 468-4065.

The church is more like a mitten than a glove During this cold season, did you notice mittens are warmer than gloves? In

gloves, the fingers fend for themselves. They are standing alone. They are part of the family of fingers, but they are apart. In really cold weather those fingers can go numb, they can hurt, ache and even get frostbitten. But, fingers in a mitten are warmed by each other. They cozy up together. The same thing happens to us. If we are alone too long, it shows. But when we are together in worship, it’s like “fingers in a mitten.” Fingers in a mitten are like the family of faith, the body of believers, the Communion of Saints, together in worship.

Are you a member of OSLC but do not worship?

We miss you! Is there something we can do to serve you better? Are you a shut-in? Are you unable to get to church because you need a ride? Have you moved out of the area? Are you worshipping somewhere else? Do you feel that something you have done is too much for Christ to forgive? Do you feel that your spiritual life is just fine without coming to weekly worship? Perhaps someone has let you down, offended you or you feel forgotten by your church family?

Continued from page 1

There has been a change in

how sponsorships for the weekly

flowers will be handled. In the

past, a person or family would

sign up and pay $30 to Our

Saviour Lutheran Church.

Flowers would then be ordered

and brought to church by a

member of the Flower

Committee. Although this option

is still available, members may

now select and bring in their own

fresh floral arrangement. The

following guidelines apply in all

situations:

+Sign up on the calendar in

the Narthex at least one week

in advance.

+Please print the information

clearly on the date you

selected. Only one family/

event per date please.

+Please provide the name of

person(s) sponsoring and the

occasion of the sponsorship.

+If you are asking the Flower

Committee to select the

flowers, there are designated

envelopes in the rack by the

sign-up book for your

donation.

+If you are planning to bring

in your own fresh floral

arrangement, please indicate

“OWN” by your name. When

you come with your flowers,

please take a plant stand from

the Sacristy, place it in front of

the pulpit and place your floral

arrangement on it.

+You are welcome to take

your flowers home after the

10:45a.m. service on Sunday.

If the flowers are in a vase that

you picked up from church,

please bring a

container for

transportation;

those vases

are the

property of

OSLC and

must stay

on-site.

We’re Lutheran! There will

be food!

Another change for this year: A

Lenten meal will be offered

from 5:00 p.m. to 6:25 p.m.

Various groups will be

sponsoring the meal. Offerings

collected for the meals will be

designated by the host group of

the week. If you are interested

in hosting a meal, please

contact Pastor Greg right away.

We do still have openings on

the schedule.

What about Confirmation

classes?

Confirmation classes will not

be held on Wednesdays during

Lent, but students will still be

gathering! Each student will be

required to participate in

Lenten worship on

Wednesdays. The students will

also be assisting with ushering,

reading and other service

opportunities during the season.

More information will be

shared with the confirmation

students very soon!

Bible studies too?

Jesus said, “Man shall not live

by bread alone, but by every

word that comes from the

mouth of God.” (Matthew 4:4)

OSLC understands this!

During the dinner hour, you

can do both! The pastors will

be leading a class on the beliefs

of Lutheran Christians. A

second class, called, “Really

Bad Girls of the Bible,” will be

offered at the same time. For

more information about this

study, please contact Stephenie

Hovland. Lent is a great time

for you to refresh and renew

your understanding of God’s

Word.

The season of Lent is

not that far away! Ash

Wednesday opens the season

on March 9, 2011. Easter is

April 24. The overall theme

for the Wednesday Lenten

sermons, “People of the

Passion,” highlights a number

of important people from the

events of the Passion of our

Lord. In doing so, we once

again are presented with the

story of God’s salvation during

Lent and Holy Week. The

Wednesday worship service

and sermon will be different

from Sunday’s service and

sermon. This gives you, the

disciple of Christ, two weekly

opportunities to grow in your

Christian faith during the

season of Lent.

The schedule has changed!

This year OSLC will be

observing Lent differently. All

our midweek services will be

held on Wednesdays. (Note:

No Thursday worship services

during Lent except for Maundy

Thursday.) The service times

have changed also. We gather

together at 4:00 p.m. and 6:30

p.m. for worship.

Many members of Our Saviour Lutheran Church are also members of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. Approximately 30 percent of the Thrivent Financial membership has been given the opportunity to donate Choice Dollars to the Lutheran organization of their choice. If you are one of those 30 percent and have not yet designated those dollars, you have “left them on the table.” If you choose to not designate those dollars by Mar. 31, 2011, you will have “swiped them from the table into the garbage can.” Millions of dollars are ready to be designated by Thrivent Financial members worldwide in the Thrivent Choice Program. If you are not

sure if you have dollars to designate, you can go to www.thrivent.com and click on Thrivent Choice (under Thrivent Community) or you can call Thrivent Financial at 1-800-THRIVENT (1-800-847-4836), say 'Thrivent Choice' and talk to a customer service representative. You will need your social security number and/or your Thrivent policy number to make your designation. If you and your spouse or children have policies, each person may have a separate Thrivent Choice Dollars account; please make sure each one calls or goes online. All of your Thrivent Choice Dollars do not have to be designated to just one

Lutheran organization. You can select as many as you want as long as a donation of at least $5 goes to each one. As your Thrivent Choice Dollars accumulate after your initial designation, you can assign them to be directed automatically to the Lutheran organization of your choice. Your options for donating dollars include, but are not limited to: Our Saviour Lutheran Church, Green Bay Trinity Elementary School, NEW Lutheran High School and Camp Luther. If you have any additional questions about this program, please contact Walter Juhnke, financial associate, at 920-954-9090, ext. 3.

“Really Bad Girls of the Bible”

Ladies, are you ready for a quick Bible

class studying some of the really bad girls of the

Bible? If you missed the February 15 deadline

to order a book, that’s okay. Pick one up at

Lighthouse Christian Books, and join us. For

questions, please contact Stephenie:

[email protected] or 264-8317

Written by a former bad girl, this book

digs deep into some of the really bad girls of the

Bible. Why did they do what they

did? Were they redeemed? Did they change?

What does it mean for me? Liz Curtis Higgs

uses humor, and a little sarcasm, to see what the

bad girls of the Bible can tell us today. Many

women have said that they felt like Liz was

sitting at the table, just talking girl-to-girl.

Somehow she manages to go deep into a subject

without going over your head. And, you can't

help but laugh and smile as you read her take on

the really bad girls of the Bible.
