Get to Know YOUR

(Quiet) NeighborsSubmitted by Jim Hofman Wheatland Township Cemetery Trustee

Ask local resident Richard Grommon about the RiverRun subdivision and the talk turns to farming …

“Where River Run is now used to be two farms owned bydifferent branches of the Clow family”, Grommon notes. And heshould know — He used to farm the Clow land as well as theGrommon family farm, which was located directly across 104thStreet… the current location of the Ashbury and Rose Hillsubdivisions.

Although Mr. Grommon now farms land west of DeKalb, hestill holds a close connection to six acres right next to River Run.Those six acres are home to the historic Wheatland TownshipCemetery located in the shadow of the River Run clubhouse andtennis courts.

Grommon, a veritable treasure trove of local history, has beena volunteer Trustee at the cemetery for decades. In continuous operation since 1836, the cemetery is the final restingplace for over 700 area residents, including the same Clow family members who once farmed the adjacent land.

Artifacts & MisconceptionsBefore there were farms here, Native Americans roamed the

area. Farmers occasionally unearthed items left behind likearrowheads, stone tools and more. Mr. Grommon himself cameacross an 1856 U.S. penny (pictured), found near the currentintersection of Clearwater and Esquire in River Run.

“Right near that intersection was the first settlement in theseparts,” Grommon added. “We were tilling the soil one day and cameacross an old stone foundation. Robert Clow’s grandparents toldhim that was the first settlement in this area. Can’t prove it, but wehad no reason to doubt the story.”

Back to the cemetery. “The biggest misconception folks have isthey think it’s a private cemetery or not active,” Grommon says. “Tothe contrary. We average 10-15 burials per year and all arewelcome.”

Strolling around the cemetery’s grounds, you’ll see markers bearing the names of the area’s founding families. Thesesame names, like Clow, Patterson, Boughton, Fry, and Grommon, now adorn streets, schools, and buildings in thecommunity.

But the Wheatland Township Cemetery isn’t only about history. Owned and maintained by the Township, thecemetery offers a peaceful, serene final resting place for today’s local families. It’s a great option, Grommon notes, forthose who wish to keep their departed family members close. “This cemetery has helped families in their time of needfor over 180 years. And we’re proud of that.”

The Growing Place

Every year the Perennial Plant Association chooses aperennial of the year. This year they chose Alliumsand we love it! These great plants are no-fuss, easy to

grow and pest-free. They produce fleshy strap-like to narrowgrass-like foliage from bulbs. The flower clusters come in avariety of colors including pink, purple, blue and white. Funfact—Alliums are ornamental onions so rabbits and deer knowto stay away from them and the flowers are very attractive topollinators.

Our Allium Favorites at The GrowingPlace Garden Center

Allium ‘Blue Eddy’ has thick, blue-gray twisted foliage that islow to the ground. This plant grows 6”-12” high and wide.Clusters of pink flowers are held on 8” stems. It likes full sun andwell drained soil. Once established it is drought tolerant. Thepink flowers bloom in July.

Allium ‘Globemaster’ as large purple globes of flowers canreach 10” in diameter. It’s a striking architectural accent whentucked in among other perennials. You can also use its driedflower heads in arrangements. Available in pots in spring or as abulb in September. This Allium likes full sun to part shade andwell drained soil. It blooms purple in May or June and will godormant in the summer.

Allium ‘Lavender Lollipop’ (‘Windy City’) stands out fromthe others due to its later flowering time in August andfloriferous habit. Foliage stays tidy right to the end of the season.Grows 12”-18” high and wide in full sun and average soil. Onceestablished it is drought tolerant.

Allium ‘Medusa’ has low mounds of narrow, twisty leavesare topped with nodding flower buds that straighten up to small, light purple flower globes in June, July or August. It grows 18”-

24” high and wide in full sun to part shade, average soil and isdrought tolerant once established.

Allium ‘Millennium’ is a wonderful short ornamental onionthat looks great on a small or large scale. The glossy green leavesare topped with dozens of 2” shimmering, iridescent pink,balloon-like flower heads in late summer. Amazingly easy togrow and durable in full sun to part shade. It likes average soil, will be drought tolerant once established, and grows 12”-18”high and wide.

Allium ‘Pink Planet’ grows in easy care mounds of narrowfoliage and will send up 3” dense spheres of pink flowers in midto late summer. The blooms are attractive to butterflies andpollinators. While this variety has larger flower globes than thefamous Chicago cultivar ‘Millennium’ it also likes full sun to partshade, average soil and will be drought tolerant onceestablished. It grows 18”-24” high and wide.

Allium ‘Summer Beauty’ a fantastic selection with neat,strap-like foliage and globular, pinkish lavender blooms that puton a spectacular show for many weeks in late summer. It is freeof insect and disease problems and provides a good food sourcefor butterflies and honeybees. Beautiful when combined withconeflowers or tall phlox. It is featured at Millennium Park inChicago. An easy to grow plant that likes full sun to part shade, average soil, and will be drought tolerant once established. It willgrow to 12”-18” high and wide.

Allium ‘Summer Peek‐a‐Boo’ has round, lavender flowerheads that peek just above clean, strap-like foliage. Blooms inJune, July or August and whether you choose to deadhead orleave the ornamental seedheads on, its neat and tidy habitmakes it perfect as an edging plant. Grows in full sun to partshade in average soil. Once established it is drought tolerant andwill reach 6”-12” high by 18”-24” wide.

Allium ‘Cernuum’ an Illinois native has delicate pink, orsometimes white, nodding clusters of star-shaped flowers in Julyor August. It is stunning when planted with taller natives such aspurple coneflower. Seeding easily, it will form thick stands ofgrass-like foliage that add a nice texture to the garden. A nativeto sandy dunes, rocky bluffs and black soil prairies. Grows 12’-18” high by 6”-12” wide in full sun to part shade, well drainedsoil. Once established it is drought tolerant.

Allium senescens ‘Glaucum’ is a compact onion that formsneat round tufts of short, flattened and twisted blue-greenleaves. The unique foliage of this curly onion is topped in latesummer with heavy umbels of lilac flowers. A hardy and easycare choice for the front of the border or along walkways whereits foliage can be appreciated. It likes full sun to part shade, average soil, and is drought tolerant once established. It willgrows 6”-12” high by 12”-18” wide.

Pet TalesBy the Naperville Area Humane Society

Sim Sim Do you ever dream of a day when you have a wonderful cat-panion to call your own? Look no further, yourboy is right here! If there would be one word frequently used to describe Sim Sim it would be: animated! Ilove to sit and talk to the birds outside the window and I can be quite chatty with them. If you like lasagnathen we also have something in common because that seems to be a favorite of mine! Now that you know alittle about me, stop in and get to know me even better! I will be in the lobby waiting to greet you!

RoxieAre you looking for that special friend to share your home with? Well come and see me! My name is Roxieand I am looking for a home where I can be the only pet. I maybe small, but I am very smart and needmental activity and daily exercise. I think this could be very rewarding because we could bond togetherwhile doing these activities! A quieter home where people aren’t always in and out would probably be bestfor me because I might get anxious and protective of my family. Once I am tired from our daily activities Iwould enjoy a nice bed and some relaxation time. So if your home is empty and you need a friend to share itwith please come see me! I just want to be the center of attention in my new forever home!

A Safer NaperCombating Identity Theft

Tax season is upon us, providing the Naperville Police Department (NPD) a timely opportunity to make Naperville “ASafer Naper” by educating residents on identity theft and how to prevent it!

Identity theft occurs when a thief steals your personal information, such as your full name or social security number,to commit fraud. Remember that big Equifax hack last year that exposed as many as 143 million social security numbers? All someone needs is your name, birthday and social security number to file a fraudulent tax return refund and steal yourmoney.

So what can you do to prevent this from happening? Experts are saying to file early! Also consider e-filing. When youe-file your tax return, not only does it instantly arrive at the IRS, but you get an acknowledgment of receipt back from theagency. If there’s a problem with your return (such as a fraudster having already filed one for you), you'll also be notifiedquickly of the nature of the issue -- which means you can deal with it fast.

Even outside of tax season, constant vigilance is the key to protecting yourself from identity theft! Here are the topfive tips to protect yourself:• Secure your social security card and number. Only give it out when absolutely necessary. • Don’t respond to unsolicited requests for information.• Review credit card and bank account statements monthly.• Secure personal information at home and shred unneeded documents.• Run and review your credit report once a year for unauthorized accounts and errors. You canorder a report for free from annualcreditreport.com.
