Mar Thoma College, Thiruvalla established in 1952, has completed an illustrious period of
sixty –five years. The beginning was so humble with just 250 students and twelve faculty
members but the past has moulded the College to become a premier centre of learning in the
area of higher education. Having obtained the unique distinction of one of the first
accredited colleges in India and the first in Kerala, the College is now gearing up for the
fourth cycle of reaccreditation. At this moment of pride and glory, we look back to
acknowledge and appreciate the pain and tears of our founding fathers particularly that of
His Grace Most Rev. Dr. Juhanon Mar Thoma Metropolitan, Rt. Rev. Dr. Mathews Mar
Athanasius Episcopa and Sri. K. K Kuruvilla. Over the years, nearly ninety eight thousand
students have gone out of the institution to find a meaningful life in the world. The College
guided by the Grace of Almighty and the aspirations of many generations is at the threshold
of innovative changes and dynamism. The College is now governed by a Council chaired by
The Manager of the College, His Grace The Most Rev. Dr. Joseph Mar Thoma
Metropolitan.
On this auspicious occasion of the sixty sixth College Day, may I present before this august
body the Annual Report of the College for the academic year 2017-‘18.
COURSES OFFERED
The College offers twelve Undergraduate (BA/BSc/B.Com) programmes, ten Post-graduate
(MA/MSc) Programmes and seven Doctoral Degree programmes. The MSc programmes in
Microbiology and Biotechnology are offered under self-financing streams. Out of fifteen
Departments of the College, seven Departments are accredited Research Centres of
Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam.

Apart from the Certificate Courses, the College offers 7 Supplementary Enrichment
Programmes - ‘Nanotechnology and Thin Film Coating’, ‘Quantitative Methods in
Mathematics and its Applications’, ‘Water Quality Analysis’, ‘Basic Skills Enrichment
Programme’, ‘Tourism and Heritage Management’, ‘Diploma in Banking and Financial
Services’, ‘PC Hardware’. The College appreciates and congratulates the Departments of
Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Economics, History, Commerce and Computer
Applications for their initiative and efforts in implementing the supplementary Enrichment
Programmes.
RESULTS OF THE UNIVERSITY EXAMINATIONS:
The College continues to maintain the tradition of having obtained commendable results in
the University Examinations with several ranks and A Plus at both UG and PG level. The
college secured an aggregate of 83.05% at the undergraduate level and 81.10% at the Post

Keralolsavam 2017. He also won A Grade and first prize in the MG University
Kalolsavam ‘Ashantham’ 2018.

CURRICULAR AND CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
Reopening and Orientation
The College reopened after summer vacation on 1st June 2017. The classes for
students of second and third year degree programmes were started with an
orientation session led by the college counsellor Rev. Dr.Joe Joseph Kuruvilla.
Chapel Service
Every working day of the College begins with worship in the College Chapel under
the leadership of MTSA and SCM Units of the College.
Environment Day Celebrations
The Environment Day celebration was observed on 9th
June 2017. A special
programme in association with KSCSTE was arranged on the occasion.
International Yoga Day
The international Yoga Day was observed on 21st
June 2017, with an exposure

Commencement of 1st DC classes
The classes for First Semester Degree classes were commenced on 29th June 2017
with an inspirational class by Rev. Dr. Easow Mathew, Principal EJM Institute,
Kompady. A counselling class for parents was also arranged. Rev. Dr. Joe Joseph
Kuruvilla led the session.
Sixty Fifth Commemoration Day
The 65th Commemoration Day of the College was celebrated on 11
th of July,
2017. The Rt Rev. Dr. Abraham Mar Paulose, the Bishop of Adoor Diocese
Delivered the Commemoration address. Rev. Oommen Philip, Sabha Secretary
presided over the programme. The College Choir led the worship and service.
Model Legislative Assembly

As the part of the Diamond Jubilee of Kerala Legislative Assembly, a model
Legislative Assembly was organised in the College by the State Government on
13th
July 2017. The students selected from different educational institutions
were trained to be the members of the model Legislative Assembly. The
session was inaugurated by the Hon. Minister Adv. Mathew T Thomas. The
District Collector and the ADM attended the inaugural function.
Orientation for NAAC Accreditation
The College is gearing up for the fourth cycle of accreditation. An orientation
programme for the fourth cycle was organised by the IQAC of the college on
9th August 2017. His Grace the Metropolitan inaugurated the orientation. Dr. M
R Kurup, renowned Peer team Chairman and Educational consultant led the
sessions. Faculty members from the college and neighbouring institutions
attended the progamme.
Independence Day Celebrations
The Independence Day celebration was held on 15th August 2017.
Alumni Family Get-together
The annual family get-together of the alumni of the College was held in the
evening of 15th
August 2017. The meet was inaugurated by adv. Biju Oommen,
Orthodox Church Sectary.
College Union Election
The College Union election for the year 2017-18 was held on 22nd
August 2017
on Parliamentary mode. Abraham P Oommen, II MA English was elected to
the post of Chairman of the College Union.
Onam Celebration

The College organised Onam celebration in association with College Union on
31st August 2017. Athappokkalam, Onappattu,etc. were conducted on the
occasion.
Assembly for 1st PG Students
The opening assembly for 1st PG student held on 20the September 2017. An
orientation class was engaged by the College counsellor Rev. Dr.Joe Joseph
Kuruvilla.
College Union Inauguration
Inauguration of the College Union was held on 26th
September 2017.
Adv. Suresh Kurup MLA inaugurated the activities of the College Union. The
Arts Club was inaugurated by Film star Arun Kurian.
Celebration of Kerala Day
The Keralappiravi, celebrations were organised on 1st November 2017. A
cultural procession from SCS School, Thiruvalla to College was held and it was
followed by a verity of entertainment events.
World Aids Day
The World Aids Day was observed on 4th
December 2017 under the auspices of
the Bio sciences association. Red ribbon distribution and competitions were
arranged.
Arts Festival
Arts festival of the college named ‘Kamaladalam’ was organised by the
College Union from 5 to 7 December 2017. The students were divided into four
houses – Vajram, Manikyam, Marathakam, Pavizham.Vajram House won the
overall championship.
College Christmas Carol
The College Christmas service under the leadership of College Choir was held
at 6 PM on 20th
December 2017. Shri.George Cherian, Director Missions India
delivered the Christmas message. The service was attend by College and local
community.

Mar Thoma College Staff fellowship
A fellowship of Mar Thoma College teaching, non teaching and management
staff was held on 4th January 2018. Rev. Dr. Joe Joseph Kuruvilla led the
opening service. Prof. Thomas Mathew, former HoD of Botany delivered the
message.
Book Exhibition
The Malayalam literary society of College organised a book exhibition in
association with National Book Stall on 11th January 2018.
Diamond Jubilee of the Brains Trust
The Brains Trust, the most notable co curricular organisation of the College has
completed a period of 60 years. The diamond jubilee of the Trust was
inaugurated by the Hon Minister of Education Prof. C Raveendranath on 19th
January 2018 in the presence of Adv. Mathew T Thomas, Hon Minister of
Water Resource.
Merit Evening
The merit evening to honour the rank and the A Plus holders of the Degree and
P G programmes was held on 19th January 2018. The awards were presented by
His Grace Metropolitan.
Republic Day Celebration
The Republic Day celebration was held on 26th January 2018. The ceremonial
parade was led by the NCC unit of the college.
Annual Alumni Meeting
The annual meeting of the alumni of the College was held on 26th January
2018. Dr. Thomas Mathew, Professor of Nephrology Sri Chitra Institute was
the chief guest.
Golden Jubilee Reunion of 1965-68 Batch

The 1965-68 Degree batches arranged a golden jubilee reunion on 27th January
2018. Over 220 former students of 1965-68 years attended the meeting and
honoured the faculty who taught them.
Golden Jubilee of the English Department
The Golden Jubilee of Department of English was inaugurated on 7th February
2018 by the former Indian permanent representative in the United Nation
Shri.T P Sreenivasn IFS. Rt Rev Thomas Samuel, retired. Bishop of CSI
Church Presided over the function.
Science Exhibition
A Science exhibition was organised by the Department of Zoology as the part
of the golden jubilee of the department from 8th to 10
th February 2018. Dr.
Rajan Varughese, Member Secretary, Kerala State Higher Education Council
inaugurated the exhibition.
Valedictory of the Golden Jubilee of Zoology.
The valedictory of Golden Jubilee celebrations of the Department of Zoology
was held on 13th
February 2018. Shri. Bharat Suresh Gopi, M P was the chief
Guest.
Mar Thoma Trophy Football Tournament
The Inter collegiate football tournament for Mat Thoma Trophy was held from
19th
to 24th February 2018 in the College Stadium. Nirmala College,
Muvattupuzha won the trophy.
National Science Day Celebrations
The National Science Day was celebrated on 28th February 2018 with poster
designing competitions, poster display and special lectures.

International Women’s Day
The International Women’s Day was celebrated on 7th March 2018 with a
special lecture
Jaivam Project
The NSS Unit of the College initiated a model organic farm in association with
Mahatma Gandhi University and Department of agriculture Govt. of Kerala.
The project named ‘Jaivam’ presented an organic model of vegetable
cultivation the Hon Minister Mathew T Thomas was inaugurated harvesting.
The project won appreciation from several quarters and got the Kerala Jaiva
Karshika Samithi award, the award for the best organic farm of the district, the
best farm of the Mahatma Gandhi University and has now been submitted for
the state and national awards.
IQAC
The Internal Quality Assurance Cell has been functioning in the College for
over two decades. The Cell is in the process of preparing the College for the
fourth cycle of re accreditation which is due in April 2019. Dr. Varghese
Mathew of the Department of Mathematics is functioning of IQAC
Coordinator.
RESEARCH ACTIVITIES
All the post graduate departments of the college are the recognized research centres
of Mahatma Gandhi University. Active research is being carried out in the Departments of
English, Physics, Economics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Botany and Zoology. Fifty One
scholars are enrolled in various departments for PhD at present.

SEMINARS/CONFERENCES CONDUCTED:
Department of English
A Golden Jubilee lecture was organised by the department. The
Tibetan poet Tenzing Tsundue delivered the lecture on Refugee
Literature.
Department of Mathematics
The department organised a lecture on role of mathematics in
modern Science as the part of Prof. C Kochumman endowment
lecture. Dr. M P Rajan, Dean IISER, Thiruvanathapuram Delivered
the lecture.
A one week TIFR, Mumbai sponsored training programme on
Advanced Algebra will be organised by the department from 2nd to
7th April 2018.
Department of Chemistry

A seminar was conducted on the World Environment Day in association with
KSCSTE and the department of Botany. Dr.Mahesh Mohan, School of
Environmental Sciences, MG University was the resource person.
A special lecture was organised on Fuelling the Future discussing the research
opportunities in Chemistry as organised and Dr. Thomas Mathew, Senior Scientist
University of California engaged the class.
The 20th V V Achenkunju Memorial Lecture was organised by the department. Dr.
Sabu Thomas, Vice Chancellor, MG University, Kottayam delivered the lecture.
Department of Botany
A seminar was conducted on the World Environment Day in association with
KSCSTE and the department of Chemistry. Dr.Mahesh Mohan, School of
Environmental Sciences, M G University was the resource person.
Department of Zoology
The department of Zoology organised an International Seminar on revisit on
coastal challenges. The Erudite Lecture was organised and the German Scholar Dr.
Tim Jennerjahn delivered the lecture on the topic effect of aquaculture on coastal
biogeography/ecology.
Department of Economics
The department organised the 21st Annual Lecture on 21st February 2018. Dr.Rajan
Varughese, Member Secretary Kerala State Higher Education Council delivered the
lecture.
Department of Commerce
Workshop on online share TradingDepartment of Commerce organised One
Day Workshop on online share trading in association with Geojith Ind.ltd
A Special Lecture on Capital Market- Investment Opportunities was organised
by the Department, Dr.V K Vijayakumar, Investment strategist, Geojith and
former planning board member, delivered the lecture

Department of Bioscience
The Bioscience department of the college organised a two day national conference
on ‘Towards Rational use of antibiotics; problems, prospects, and future
implications’ in association with ReAct Asia Pacific from 15th to 16th February
2018. The conference was sponsored by Indian Council of Medical Research
(ICMR) , New Delhi and co sponsored by M G University.

Python Language held at MACFAST, Thiruvalla on 7th and 8th December 2017
and attended a regional seminar on Recent Advances in Mathematics at
Catholicate College ,Pathanamthitta on 2nd March 2018.
Prof. Anu Ann James has attended a workshop on ‘Algebra’ held at Kerala
School of Mathematics, Kozhikode from 7 to 9th September 2017 and Indian
Woman & Mathematics, Regional Workshop on Research and Opportunities
held at CUSAT, Cochin on 2nd and 3rd January 2018.
Prof. Manesh Jacob has attended a workshop on “outcome based research”
conducted by the University of Kerala.

FUNDS TO COLLEGE AND DEPARTMENTS
The college obtained funds from Kerala Govt, UGC and Central agencies like

COLLEGE EXAMINATIONS
In the restructure credit and semester system internal examinations are
statutory examinations for all UG and PG Programmes. The College therefore conducts
two internal examinations for each semester. The Examination Committee, headed by

The National Service Scheme is the most enterprising co-curricular organisation
of the College. There are 3 units with a student strength of 250 volunteers. The

The model organic farm developed by the NSS Unit of the College named Jaivam
project won appreciation and awards from different agencies including Government
and University in one acre of leased land near College. Prof. Manesh Jacob, Dr. Josmin
P Jose and Prof. Reethu Mariah Jacob served as the programme officers.
THE BRAINS TRUST
This year, The Brains Trust came up with its activities based on the theme
'Retrospect '.The inauguration ceremony was held on 29th August 2017 which
marked the beginning of the trust activities. Shri.Anto Antony M.P inaugurated the
function.
Ripple, a one day leadership camp was conducted for the members of the trust on
18th November 2017.

An open discussion 'Thanalkoottam 'was held in the College on 4th December
2017.Prof.Jayakrishnan Namboothiri, Dept. of Economics guided the discussion.
A photography exhibition (Zoom'in) and an inter departmental Debate
competition (verbattle)..
Alumni meeting was organized on 23rd December 2017.The first Speaker of the
organization Shri .Thomas varghese inaugurated the function.
The Diamond Jubilee celebrations of the Trust was inaugurated on 19th January
2018 by Prof.C.Raveendhranath, Minister of Education, govt. Of Kerala.
An open General Quiz competition,' Prudencia' was held on 22nd January 2018.
The three day camp of The Brains Trust was held from 23rd to 25th February at
Hosanna Mount Bharananganam. Shri. Sarin P inaugurated the camp.
An inter-departmental intellectual fest 'Impulses 'was also arranged by the Trust on
9th March 2018.
Prof. Rahul N, Prof. Aravind Sankar and Dr. Shilly Elizabeth David served as the
directors of the Trust.
Training for Administrative Service Examination
An arrangement has been made to provide training on a long term basis for the
aspirants of Kerala and Indian Administrative Services. A consultation group under the
leadership of Prof . Aravind Sankar, Prof. Remi Cherian, Prof. Renosh Tom,
Prof. Manesh Jacob and Prof. K M Vishnu Namboodiri has been formed to implement
the programme.
LITERARY CLUB
A Book Exhibition was conducted by the club in association with NBS. Shri. Manarkad
Mathew, former editor Vanitha delivered a special lecture on the occasion.
UGC/JRF CELL
The various departments of the college have been arranging coaching classes
for the students with the UGC NET & JRF examinations in mind.

PTA
The Parents Teachers Association, always a source of inspiration, has proved to
be the backbone for the academic activities of the college, extending ample support.
Class wise PTA meetings were organized by various departments throughout the year,
helping us maintain discipline on the campus.
FORT
Forum of Retired Teachers has always been a source of motivation, guidance
and support for the college. It is quite heartening to perceive that most of the former
teachers of the college take active interest in the affairs of FORT.
CBCSS and PG CSS
Degree and P G Programmes are offering under Credit and Semester System. Dr. Koshy
John (Chemistry) and Dr.Tutu M John (Mathematics) as serving as coordinators of UG
and PG Semester System.
Hostels
The College has two women’s hostels providing accommodation to 240 students. A
sports hostel is also functioning in the College. Mrs. Rachel Koshy and Mrs. Elezabeth
Francis are working as hostel wardens.
OTHER ASSOCIATIONS
The associations/clubs/committees in the college, like the Career Guidance Cell,
Mar Thoma Students’ Association, Best Arts, Women’s Cell, Tourism Club, Women’s
Empowerment, Eco Club, and the College Choir all have been functioning admirably.
PG ASSOCIATIONS
The activities of the PG Association of the College were inaugurated by
Dr. Alaxander Jacob IPS. The PG Discussion forum was also inaugurated on the
occasion.

A bio park was set up with the help of Social Forest Department.

Golden jubilee proclamation procession was organised from SCS campus to
college.
The inter-collegiate literary festival and competition was also organised from

Workshop on ‘Online share trading ‘was organised.
A career orientation programme for outgoing students was organised.
Six students of commerce department started a new business venture named
“TREATZ”.

COUNCILS AND MEETINGS
The Governing Council of the college met many times during the year, giving
vital instructions and directions regarding the administration and development of the
college. Staff Council also met regularly and took decisions on matters pertaining to
internal administration and academic projects. During the staff meetings conducted
regularly, the faculty members raised significant questions and gave valuable
suggestions for improving the academic atmosphere of the college. The Teaching and
Non-Teaching staff associations also contribute significantly towards the stable
functioning of the institution.
CONCLUSION
An academic year ends here but the journey still continues. At this moment of
celebrating the sixty sixth College Day, there many deserving our gratitude. At the
very outset I place on record my sincere gratitude to our Manager Thirumeni, The Mar
Thoma Metropolitan for his blessings. We appreciate and thank the support of all the
Governing Council members both previous and present , former teachers, present
teachers, non teaching staff, alumni, PTA, management staff, local community ,

students and fond well wishers of the college for their unfailing support and
assistance. Above all to the God almighty for His wonderful guidance. May I conclude
