You will begin this unit by completing this Maps section. So much of what you will learn in this unit can trace its influence to the geography of Ancient Greece.

1. Complete the map of Ancient Greece following the directions that are attached. (in hand-out)You will notice that Greece is mainly a large peninsula, but it also has hundreds of tiny islands and one large island, Crete. Greece has a varied topography—there are many different types of land forms. Just as geography affects the lives of modern-day people, it had major effects on people of ancient Greece!

2. Scan the following websites to get a better understanding about Greece’s geography. The geography itself has not changed much over the thousands of years; neither has the way it influences Greek’s lives.

3. Compare your completed map of Ancient Greece with a map of Georgia to answer the questions found on the Challenge Questions! link. Use an atlas, wall map, or other online map. You may click on the link and print the document, or you may use your own paper and simply number your paper and answer the questions.

ClimateClimate is the overall pattern of weather from a region that is averaged over many years. Climate plays a big part in what crops can grow, the clothing people wear, and many cultural traditions. Paleoclimatologist have made it possible for us to know more about the conditions the Ancient Greeks experienced. Answer the following questions, referring to the recommended websites for supporting information.

**On your own piece of notebook paper, number your paper from 1-7. Write the answers in COMPLETE SENTENCES.

1. What is the average temperature in Athens, Greece?2. What is the average rainfall in Athens, Greece?3. What is the average temperature in Athens, Georgia?4. What is the average rainfall in Athens, Georgia?5. How do these two places compare? 6. In what categories are they the most similar? 7. In what categories are they the most different?

Paleoclimatologist—a person who studies the weather patterns of ancient times using evidence found in geologic records, especially in the form of glacial deposits, fossils, sediments, and rock and ice cores.

paleoclimatology   (pā'lē-ō-klī'mə-tŏl'ə-jē)    The scientific study of climatic conditions, along with their causes and effects, in the geologic past. These conditions are reconstructed on the basis of evidence found in the geologic record, especially in the form of glacial deposits, fossils, sediments, and rock and ice cores. Because much of the geologic record studied in paleoclimatology predates humans, this research is valuable for weighing the relative influence of human and natural causes of global climate change. It also provides test situations for computerized climate modeling systems used to predict present-day climate changes. ~Dictionary.com

The History of Democracy

Athens, Greece is credited for being the “Cradle of Western Civilization.” Although it was only one of the five major city-states of Ancient Greece, it created the form of government that we based our country on—democracy. Americans believe that democracy is the best form of government because the responsibility of ruling the country does not come from just one person. Let’s see how democracy came about. Refer to the completed map of Ancient Greece, your completed timeline, and the various links to help support your answers.http://greece.mrdonn.org/city-states.html. (there are several helpful links on this page)http://www.historyforkids.org/learn/greeks/government/ http://www.historyforkids.org/learn/greeks/history/classical.htmhttp://www.historyforkids.org/learn/greeks/government/index.htm

AthensThe Greeks believed that each city-state in Ancient Greece has a god or goddess in charge of it, their special patron. For Athens, the patron was Athena, goddess of wisdom. Athenians were very concerned with education.

SPARTAUnlike Athens, Sparta did not focus on educating their citizens. Instead, Spartans were raised to be great warriors. Men and women were strong and fierce.

FoodGeography and climate have a great influence of what crops grow in an area. Those factors also influence what types of animals are found there. It can be understood, then, that geography and climate play a large part in determining what foods make up a group’s diet and what types of clothes they may wear.

ArchitectureSimply put, architecture refers to the buildings and artificialstructures of an environment. When we study architecturein relation to an era, as we are with Ancient Greece, we are also talking about the aesthetics of the buildings—how pleasing they are to us.

During the Classical period of Ancient Greece, sculptors, artists, and designers were held in high regards. They were the “rock stars” of the time! Many important structures and temples were built during this time. Some still exist today, although they are mostly in ruins.

There are three (3) distinct styles of columns from Ancient Greek architecture. They are the Doric, Ionian, and Corinthian. Each one has a unique shape and design which was characteristic of the region from which it came. These styles of columns, as well as various structures of Ancient Greece, influenced American architecture. It is amazing that a style has endured over 2500 years! It is worth learning more about.
