FROM THE PRESIDENT The weather has been warming up and there are a few headers running around, so I guess it’s nearly Christmas again. We have had a full year to date with events and club business to attend to. The recent trip to Nuriootpa was excellent and many thanks must go to Lyn Clerke and Graham Littler for organizing the weekend. Some thirty four people attended the Friday evening meal at The Vine Hotel. It was a great fine weather opportunity to catch up with the Strathalbyn quartet of Rod and Vonny Hill, Glyn and Chris Morris, as well as the regular happy campers. All told it was weekend to remember. The much discussed and researched Rex Fox legacy project has progressed to the next stage and to those who have been involved in this matter, I express my heartfelt thanks. Overall, we have a great group of workers and support from the membership, although there is room for more volunteers to organise runs, write events reports and to consider taking up committee positions in 2013. It’s not that far away! Given the interest shown by a number of members of late, I think it fair to say that MAPS is in pretty good shape. Check out the program and make sure that you get your bookings in for some events that you like the look of. If you miss out, don’t whinge- we’ve been having a ball! STOP PRESS Our granddaughter, Eva Jane Penhall was born at 1.12AM on October 31st 2012, just twelve minutes after mother Amanda arrived at Darwin Hospital! Both mother and child are doing well and here are some statistics- Weight 3.12 Kg, length- 49cm. Head circumference 33cm. A daughter for Tim and Amanda, and a sister for Sam. Grandpa and Granny Penhall can’t wait to get up there! Ed’s note- a reminder of what little Penhall’s grow into.

FROM THE SECRETARY What a great time with the old cars and their owners we have enjoyed over the last few weeks. Events far and wide, including the guest speaker Don Loffler at the November meeting. Two day later and we were at the Moonta Antiques and Collectibles Fair where sixteen MAPS cars made a noteworthy display. Well done to Mike and Rosi Sigston from Edithburgh for making both the Balaklava lunch and the Moonta Fair. As regards the latter, those there certainly enjoyed themselves and I was particularly pleased how the Copper Coast Mayor, Paul Thomas went out of his way to make us welcome and to discuss how we can make the 2013 event even better. As regards culinary rewards, the Senior Citizens’ Club morning tea was a “must do”. Local knowledge from the Goodfellows being the key. Bronte received a reward later when he won a bottle of wine for his EH Holden displayed and I won a bottle for the Bristol. Actually, I ensured driver and cleaner for the day, Ashley Farrow got his share of the Riversleigh Shiraz later that day. Well done Moonta! Our Nuriootpa campout was well supported and certainly enjoyed. Plans are under discussion for the two campouts in 2013, along with a full range of other events. The calendar will soon be turned over to 2013, so I think it is already time to remind all members that several current officers will be standing down and that will provide the opportunity for others to take a go at the helm. The current crew do not wish to simply walk off the bridge and leave the ship to flounder, but would like to get their possible replacements familiar with the jobs that need to be done. Now is the time to start planning. Hopefully, in 2013 will see a fitting use of the funds allocated for the Rex Fox Memorial. There are a few ideas floating around, but with the holiday break not that far off, perhaps we can all sit down and think about how to best use the money to honour the memory of our donor within the aims of our club. 2013 will hopefully see the inaugural Rex Fox Memorial Run and that is perhaps an opportunity to see the restored trucks and bikes back on the YP. If we could combine that with a stage in the nominated project, it would be a great outcome. CLUB BADGES For those who have yearned for a MAPS badge to go on the grille, or badge bar, we have now a limited stock of the stainless MAPS badge. The price is the same as it was 10 years ago- just $15. We also have MAPS mugs- the sort you drink out of! For just $5 each. Either or both of these would make good stocking fillers for Christmas, although not as good as one of the items on the back page of this edition! Anyway, my Christmas present is in Santa’s workshop being fixed up at the present. Well, actually it’s the MGB in CYP Crash at Maitland, with Santa Rod Nixon and his band of helpers working away. Finally, with Christmas coming up, our December meeting is a good wind up to the year and if you want an outing on Friday, 21st December, then the Ardrossan Street Party is great night out. MAPS Campout at Nuriootpa A campout at Nuriootpa caravan park organised by Lyn Clerke and Graham Littler seemed a long way off when we decided to join the MAPS club for a weekend away. Then suddenly it was upon us. We decided to make a longer stay so headed off on Thursday and arrived at Nuriootpa Caravan Park mid afternoon only to find Trevor and Jeanette Bean, Ron and Joyce Ander-son already there. Thursday night was a quiet one so we had an early night prior to the arrival of the members on Friday. Friday morning was a good chance for a wander around the main street of Nuriootpa, before lunch. We discovered a couple of op shops to browse around, you never know where that little treasure might be. We returned to the park for lunch and found people had begun to arrive, and by mid afternoon most were there and set up camp ready for the weekends activities. A happy hour was a chance to renew old acquaintances and to discuss the weekend’s entertainment. The venue for the even-ing meal was the Vine Inn with around thirty five taking part. We found the hotel having a busy night and a bit of time was spent in a line to order our meal. Once ordered and served we found the food was worth the wait. Saturday morning dawned and a few called in to the Barossa Junction for a great buffet breakfast, with the remainder head-ing off to the produce markets near Angaston. An arranged booking at the Tanunda brewery was our next meeting place where we were given a tasting and tour of the brewing area which was quite enlightening. Following the tour we were served a light lunch of cold meats and salads. Saturday afternoon was free time in readiness for the happy hour and a variety of our own prepared meal, mostly barbecue, which was eaten together at the camp kitchen. A treat, compli-ments of Shirley and Don Rose was a serve of Quandong pies and fresh cream, a delicacy not to be missed. When completed and cleaned up, Shirley took charge with one of her unique card games which always creates a bit of fun. She did admit getting a bit confused with her card pack but all worked out with everyone enjoying the moment. Thanks, Shirley for the effort and gifts and bit of fun. President Dick Penhall presented Shirley with a little gift which was a cartoon book of uses for condoms; he told her misread the title, it was supposed to be a quandong recipe book. Shirley was later spotted having quite a laugh at some of the graphics and uses of the book title. A thank you to the organisers and helpers which made the weekend possible was made, without these people campouts like these would not happen. Sunday morning and after a few goodbyes, saw most of the club members packed and heading off. An organised lunch at the Royal Hotel at Balaklava was on the agenda on their way home. We along with Mike and Mary Osborne, Jim and Jean Sewell, Trevor and Jeanette Bean, Trevor and Lyn Clerk, de-cided to stay an extra night, I guess you can pick the retirees. Mid morning we joined Mike and Mary and Jim and Jean at a park near Tanunda where the Gawler Car Club had organised a day run and lunch. This was a chance to catch up with anoth-er club and see a few different people and cars. The MGCCSA’s Kimber Run passed by, so around 150 MG’s to admire.

On our return to the park, we found this was a chance to pre-pare for the return home. This was followed by a smaller happy hour and a few left overs of food, for the evening meal. Later some time was spent sitting out and enjoying the night air and telling a few stories, some bordering on untruths I’m sure, prior to turning in for the night. Monday morning ,after saying our goodbyes, packed we headed home after a terrific weekend with friends after enjoy-ing some good company and a laugh. Thanks again to Shirley Rose for an entertaining game of cars on the Campout Saturday night. I think it even confused Shirley for a while, but it was fun. We hope that she studies the new book and she might show us tricks from it later. Well, for some of us, the Sunday morning meant heading home, so after breakfast it was pack up time and saying our farewells to those staying on, or heading in other directions. About a dozen headed towards Balaklava for lunch. On the way, we thought we might stop at Owen for coffee at the pub, as this serves as the convenience store as well. Along with Don and Shirley Rose, we waited until just after 11 AM for the hotel to open, but along with some locals, we were told the machine would take half an hour to get ready. We decided to give the coffee a miss, got to Balaklava at 11.40 AM and sat around in the shady rotunda until Mike and Rosi Sigston arrived from Edithburgh. With others also arriving, our party grew to a dozen, all of us enjoying a great lunch and conversation. ( I think the meal was better than at the Vine’s on the Friday) . All too soon, it was time to go our separate ways, but that leaves me asking, “Bev Chapman, where were you going when you left the pub as you looked to be heading to-wards Snowtown” JP

5 CARRYING ON FROM DON LOFFLER’S TALK Seeing several of the cars featured in Don’s excellent recent presentation to the MAPS members, prompted some thoughts as regards their background. When the AC 2 Litre came up on the screen, few MAPS members would have seen one, let alone own one. So, as someone who owned THREE at one time, it revived memories of the car we bought back in 1996, a graceful car from the front, but let down by the rather dumpy rear end. Having made top quality sports cars before WW2, the company produced the 2 Litre saloon, drophead and Buckland tourers. The car had a front beam axle and under slung rear axle. However, they still drive well and they are becoming increasingly sought after. Fortunately, the AC Ace came along to keep AC as one of the world’s sporting marques. The Armstrong Siddeley “station ute” variants were not seen

the UK where a range of saloon and convertible cars took on the names of WW2 aircraft- Hurricane (convertible), Whitley, Typhoon and Lancaster (saloons). Alvis recommenced car production with the TA14 saloon and convertibles, with a four cylinder 1800cc motor, very much a revamp of the pre war model. By 1951, the 6 cylinder 3 litre TA21 was in production- and we all know what a great car and engine they are! . The early Bond car would now fetch a high price among micro car collectors, but back in the late 1940’s and 1950’s such cars were often bought by budget conscious people, many of whom

did not have a full UK licence. How such cars would have dealt with Aussie conditions is a puzzle! Among the eastern European cars featured, the fin tailed, air cooled rear engine Tatra has become another rarity, commanding high prices. Don did not show a Skoda, another Czech made product, but they became the butt of many jokes with their post war cars. ( Q. Why do Skodas have heated rear windows? A. To warm your hand when you push start them.) Prewar, the marque was a quality one and actually the post war little Octavia was not such a bad car. Forty years on and with VW’s backing, Skoda has again been up there for a fair time with the top players as regards quality, performance and style. As for VW, just as well the factory was just the right side of the border, so that the Brits could get the show up and running again after WW2! East German cars remained backward as regards quality and design and on the western side, the emphasis was on the “bubble” cars. By the mid 1950’s the game was changing- Mercedes back in the big time, the VW in full flow and BMW showing some very nice cars. Over in the USA, the Americans soon got into making cars that looked modern, as depicted by the 1951 Studebaker Champion that Don mentioned. Meanwhile, the Brits got back into manufacturing cars, as opposed to tanks, trucks and planes. Steel was in short supply, so some companies used the aluminum from wartime supplies. Triumph’s Roadster (below)

had a lot of alloy body panels and was the last car with a ‘dickey” seat Even before the end of the war, the British government was looking to rationalise the variety of car models produced, but it is doubtful that the words were heeded. However what was heeded was the instruction to export- no exports meant no steel. Hence new cars in the UK were a rarity. Who, in 1950, could have foretold how the emphasis of car manufacture would change so much in the next fifty years? At the same time, let us remember that even with the lemons and failures of all nations in this post war period, we were left with some cars that had the personalities and styling that make them collectible today. The cars many loathed and despised when they were new will become the cherished cars of the future. All you have to do is to predict them. Mike O

The Riley RMC was a car I think Mary would let me buy! The Morgan Pus 8 was one I’d like to buy and the modern Bentley with rego number 1WO, is one I’d be unable to buy! Mary, Molly and I spent a great weekend with MAPS members Ashley Farrow and Margaret. The Mylor Oval starting point for the picnic run provided a peaceful place to mark the Remembrance Day , with the Ode and minute silence duly observed. After a run of about 40 miles we all parked in the wooded and shady cover provided, with a view of the Coorong from a nearly incline. Making our way home, we called into see a member of the Chrysler Restorers Club who is building a car that warrants an article in its own right. Another great weekend. Mike O

BURRA TO MORGAN 1906 RE-ENACTMENT The organisers of this event are Roger Cross, Merv Mathews and very ably assisted by NARC President Moranne Coombs and members. After knowing and hearing of this event for a number of years, but due to other events, (again this year, Restorers weekend at Jamestown Air Show) we have not been able to attend. This year Margaret took the initiative, registered the car and booked the Paxton Cottages so it was going to happen! It is a celebration of the achievement of the four day Burra Motor Club run of 1906. I always wished to do it in the 1929 DeSoto Roadster. We have had the pleasure of owning this beautiful car for almost six years and this was to be our longest journey; 350 miles and typical preparations required. We travelled up Friday in perfect weather. Resting at the Saddleworth Hotel for lunch and arriving at Burra around 3.00pm just meeting Bruce and Carolyn in their lovely combination of 1964 Dodge Phoenix and 64’ Roadmaster Caravan having a scenic drive to the Jame-stown Air Show, Chrysler Restorers weekend.

Our weekend started on Saturday with vehicles lining up in the main square at the Council Offices giving the first opportunity for town’s folk and tourists to view some of the ten veteran cars and two motor bikes, eight vintage cars, several joining later. One commercial truck, a rare Grey 1923 and the rest a variety of classic cars made a total for the weekend of sixty from a variety of clubs, Steve Lovell representing Chrysler in the 25.

The drive was described as a ‘shakedown’ 22 km drive to Farrell Flat for lunch for around 80 guests at Galley’s Meeting House and Café, also a conference centre and B&B run by NARC members Sally and Gary Fieldhouse. A very entertaining Roger Cross talked on the first1906 event and details for Sunday’s event. Again the day being perfect a lot of cars were open topped. Returning to Paxton Square Julian Cross hosted games of Boules with fun and prizes. Sunday’s run started with optional breakfast at 7.00am and line up in Kingston Street (in front of Paxton Cottages) for an 8.30 departure. Three rows, veteran, vintage and classic historic au-tomobiles lined up in one of Burra main streets gave a great atmosphere and again lots of town and tourist people gathered to enjoy the departure of cars in order. Driving off at the start with people on either side of the road was added to the event. The plan was to stop halfway for morning tea at the Gums Sta-tion Homestead, as the original crossing across the saltbush plains did. A presentation to the best dressed Lady and Gent was made. Volunteer ladies produced delicious home made assorted cakes and slices.

More cars joined in and we headed off again for lunch at Mor-gan meeting the local CFS to marshal and park us in Railway Terrace for public display. A good crowd of people again en-joyed looking and talking to owners about the cars. Plenty of food outlets or picnics on the lawn with shady trees by the river, with a forecast 27C. Later people left to various places, some staying in Morgan, returning to Burra, Barossa, or home. We returned to Burra with a strong warm head wind and chose the Burra Hotel to have dinner with Mary and Mike Osborne. The dining room was filled with other enthusiasts. Monday was re-served to come home. The car ran so well we briefly stopped in Riverton and was home in three hours. A successful trip, new friends and looking forward to the next one. NEWS FROM THE HILLS… Following their move to Strathalbyn, Rod and Vonny Hill have been well involved with the Glyn and Chris Morris in the formation of a local historic car club. They have held a number of runs since formation and have attracted a good range of vehicles on these. Pictured above are just a few from those taking part in their November run. Rod reports. “ Here are some pictures of run from Strath. to Langhorne Creek via Currency Creek. We held our monthly meeting and sausage sizzle at Pott's Reserve at completion of the run. The Morris’s Lincoln ( Ex Giff Chapman) was left on the side of the road just out of Strath.,stopped again, electric f/pump running continuously.” Don’t feel alone Glyn, others have had electric fuel pump gremlins lately- Mike O

SEEN IN THE FLINDERS Mid way between Parachilna and Blinman, we were amazed to see a group of vintage Bentleys coming towards us. It appears that the group came from Perth and had travelled across to Adelaide, using the Spencer Gulf ferry link and then embarked on a tour of the Flinders. Whilst the older cars took the dirt roads, the “modern” car that was with the group in Orroroo kept to the bitumen! Near our base at Hawker, we came across this Hillman Minx estate car ( pictured below) which looked to be in need of some TLC. However, it looked as if it could be salvaged. Also in the same area was a Land Rover hardtop and a couple of doors. I wonder if the Land Rover collector at Wilmington knows about these?

During our stay in the Hawker area, we had no mains power, but still enjoyed great time at the Flinders Ranges Caravan Park. We did not miss out on quondong pie at Quorn. If you go that way, make a point of stopping off at Carrieton with its great little Community Store, managed by volunteers. The caravan park also looks to be an ideal stopover point. Going through the small communities of the mid north makes a welcome change from Highway One. Mike O
