Maps in Italian Atlases of the Sixteenth Century, being a comparative list of the Italian maps issued by Lafreri, Forlani, Duchetti, Bertelli and others, found in atlases By R. V. TooLEY During the middle decades of the I6th century Italy was the main producing and distributive centre of the map trade of Europe. This was due to various causes,—to her favourable geographic position, before the development of ocean highways altered the trade routes of the world, to the experi- ence she had gained during the preceeding centuries in the construction of sea charts (the manuscript portolani), to the wealth and mercantile enterprise of her inhabitants, and to the number and excellent workmanship of her engravers on copper. Venice and Rome were the chief marts of the map industry. The most notable of the publishers in Rome was Lafreri. Antonio Lafreri, or to give him his correct patronymic, Antoine Lafrère, was a native of Burgundy, who migrated to Rome about the year 1540, Italianised his name, and in 1544 set up in business as an engraver and printseller in the Via del Perione. From 1553 onwards Lafreri was associated in business with an old established dealer, the elder Salamanca (Antonio). In 1562 Salamanca died, and a year later, the connection between the younger Salamanca (Francesco) and Lafreri was dissolved. From that date till his death in 1577 Lafreri published on his own account, and became the leading dealer in engravings in the Rome of his day. His part heir, and successor in the business, was Claudio Duchetti (i.e. Claude Duchet), who died in 1585. The output of the Roman publishers was on the whole somewhat restricted in its scope, and dealt mainly with local Italian topography. They also showed a partiality for printing plans of cities and the delineation of notable historical events, such as contemporary battles in various parts of Europe, sieges, and the regiments and order of the Turkish army. The publishers of Venice, on the other hand, catered for a more cosmopolitan taste. They offered a wider selection of maps to their clients, embracing nearly all the countries of the then known world. Perhaps it would be correct to say that the Venetians published a greater number of maps, for the Venetian and Roman dealers mutually borrowed one from the other, as occasion demanded, for the satisfaction of their customers. Sometimes they would use a map without alteration, at others they procured the copperplate, erased the original imprint, and substituted their own. The most prominent publishers and engravers in Venice at this time were Paolo Forlani, Ferrando and Donato Bertelli, Camocio, Cimerlino, Licinio, Nelli, Zaltieri and Zenoi. Overshadowing all his compatriots, both in the volume and importance of his work as a cartographer, was Giacomo Gastaldi. Born at Villa Franca in Piedmont, he removed to, and settled in, Venice, where his first work, a large scale map of Spain, was produced in 1544. He was appointed cosmographer to the Republic of Venice, and no less than 109 separate maps due to his industry have so far been traced. His more important works include two world maps, a revised and augmented edition of Ptolemy's geography with 64 maps, and maps of Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, Italy, Poland and Lombardy. Other geographers and editors whose work was produced in Venice include Bernardo Silvano of Eboli, Benedetto Bordone of Padua, Antonio Floriani of Udine, Pietro Copo a resident in Istria, Giolito, Marcolini, Moleti, Girolamo Porro, Ruscelli, De Musis, Valgrisi and Livio Sanudo. This was due to various causes,—to her favourable geographicposition, before the development of ocean highways altered the trade routes of the world, to the experi-ence she had gained during the preceeding centuries in the construction of sea charts (the manuscriptportolani), to the wealth and mercantile enterprise of her inhabitants, and to the number and excellentworkmanship of her engravers on copper.

Venice and Rome were the chief marts of the map industry. The most notable of the publishers inRome was Lafreri. Antonio Lafreri, or to give him his correct patronymic, Antoine Lafrère, was a nativeof Burgundy, who migrated to Rome about the year 1540, Italianised his name, and in 1544 set up inbusiness as an engraver and printseller in the Via del Perione. His part heir, and successor in the business, was Claudio Duchetti(i.e. Claude Duchet), who died in 1585.

The output of the Roman publishers was on the whole somewhat restricted in its scope, and dealtmainly with local Italian topography. They also showed a partiality for printing plans of cities andthe delineation of notable historical events, such as contemporary battles in various parts of Europe, sieges, and the regiments and order of the Turkish army.

The publishers of Venice, on the other hand, catered for a more cosmopolitan taste. They offereda wider selection of maps to their clients, embracing nearly all the countries of the then known world.Perhaps it would be correct to say that the Venetians published a greater number of maps, for theVenetian and Roman dealers mutually borrowed one from the other, as occasion demanded, for thesatisfaction of their customers. maps, folding the largest, and affixing marginal strips to the smallest to bring them all to a uniform size, and binding the whole together in atlas form. This idea was fortunately followed by others, and thusprotected in book form many maps have been preserved which in their separate state would havepossibly been lost or destroyed, a fate that has befallen the greater part of the maps produced northof the Alps during the same period.

This paucity of cartographical remains of the I6th century, of nations other than the Italian, has causedthe merits of the northern geographers too often to be overlooked. The bulk of the Italian printed maps, other than maps of their own land, were necessarily based on the results of surveys made in othercountries. The maps made in the North, principally executed on wood blocks, were frequently on a verylarge scale, a fact that in itself mitigated against their survival. The Italian map makers, apart fromGastaldi, were mainly adaptors and improvers rather than originators. Their sources of informationwere in the main the maps of their Germanic and French competitors, which they procured and repro-duced in a superior manner on copperplates, either in their original or on a reduced scale. Thus theworld maps of Mercator and Oronce Fine, the Austrian maps of Wolfgang Lazius, the maps of Scandinaviaby Olaus Magnus and Anthoniszoon, the map of Switzerland by Tschudi, the maps of Jacob van Deventerof the Netherlands, and others, were copied and utilised by the Italian masters, not always with acknow-ledgement to the author. The woodcut maps, so important in the evolution of the cartography ofEurope and the world, are in general far more rare than their Italian versions. Maps from wood-blockswere, however, also published in Italy, though in small numbers and mostly before 1500. Though printedin fairly large numbers, whole editions have entirely disappeared, and they are known for the mostpart by one or two examples only, from Italian reductions, or simply from written record.

The collections of 16th century Italian maps, on the other hand, are far from being as rare as hasfrequently been stated. Between sixty and seventy such volumes are now known to survive. Of thecollections which have been described in print no two examples are alike, either numerically or in theircontents. Not only is there no regularity in the selection of the maps, but there is also a lack of con-sistency in the delineation of particular localities. For example on different maps in the same collection,America may be shown separated from Asia by a narrow strait, or a wide sea, or joined to the Asiaticcontinent. They have, however, one feature in common : they are arranged in the old Ptolemaic order ofprecedence, and this, combined with the number of such volumes, tends to confirm the fact of anestablished practice, rather than individual haphazard formations, and justifies their inclusion amongthe atlases of the world.

The majority of these collections were issued without a title-page, but about 1570-72 a finely engravedtitle-page was printed, lettered Geografia: Tavole moderne di Geografia de la maggior parte del mondodi diver´si autori raccolte et messe secondo l'ordine di Tolomeo con idisegni di molta citta etfortezze di diverseprovintie stampate in rame con studio et diligenza in Roma. The fact that this title bore a Rome imprint(though without specifying a publisher) and that Antonio Lafreri of Rome printed a list of the maps onsale at his establishment which more or less agrees with the contents of such collections, has led manyto associate all such collections with Lafreri. This is far from correct, Forlani, Bertelli, and Duchetti atleast having a claim in this respect. The collection possessed by the Birmingham Public Library, for example, is a Duchetti collection The most numerous imprints are those of Duchetti (17), and themaps range from 1553 to 1580. Lafreri died in 1577. Another Duchetti collection is the Beans-HenryStevens volume. Typical Venetian collections include the Bertelli volume, formerly in the possessionof Messrs. Quaritch, now the property of H.H. Prince Youssouf Kamal, the volume in the NationalMaritime Museum, Greenwich, and Mr. Beans' Triester Lloyd example.

Some collections, such as those in Basle University and the British Museum, are composite, in thelatter case several maps having been added to an original homogenous set. While not strictly speakinga contemporary collection, the atlas in the British Museum is among the most interesting to the student, for here, grouped compactly together in two volumes, are no less than 233 different maps (includingvariants) by 16th century Italian map makers. They are so arranged that, generally speaking, variantsof a map follow one another, a system that greatly facilitates research. The Basle volume contains, besides Italian productions, maps from the Theatrum of Ortelius, the Speculum of de Jode, and a numberof large scale maps of non-Italian origin. These have not been included in the comparative list. Recent

research, notably that of Prof. Almagià, has revealed that the practice of assembling separate maps inatlas form, was followed in Venice at an early date, and that the practice probably originated in that city. This opinion is reasonably based on the fact that the greater number of these maps were printed in Venice, and that a comparison of collections that contain the earliest issues of individual maps reveals a pre-ponderating percentage of the works of the Venetian masters. Collections that contain the Rometitle page mostly include maps of a later date, and probably the earlier Roman collections were issuedwithout a title. An exhaustive study of the watermarks used on the maps, and particularly on themarginal strips, would do much in helping to settle questions of priority between the two centres, butthe name of Gastaldi alone is sufficient to give a greater lustre to Venice.

The most comprehensive descriptions of these atlases so far printed have been those by Nordenskiöld,Ruge, and Wieder. The latest of these was published in 1916, and since that date additional collectionshave come to light (no less than three have appeared in the London market). The additional collectionshave revealed many new variants, and a few hitherto unknown maps. Nordenskiöld, listing theHelsingfors and Collegio Romano collections, gave 142 titles. Wieder, comparing the Madrid collectionswith the preceding and with the Peckover volume in the Royal Geographical Society, increased thenumber of titles to 176 (or 211 including variants). In the following list it has been possible to increasethis to 661 titles by giving the collations of 35 collections. Of the 661 titles, the British Museum possessesthe remarkable number of 318, the Bibliothèque Nationale just under 300, and Mr. G. H. Beans 195.The present list is intended for practical use rather than as a contribution to the history of Italiancartography, its main purpose being to assist collectors and librarians in comparing similar atlaseswhich may come into their hands. Titles have been copied exactly as they are printed on the maps and inany apparent variations in the spelling of the same names or words this should be taken into account.Dedications have been given (in whole or in part) only where the map contains no other title sa\ e thatembedded in the dedication. In this case I have departed from uniformity to facilitate identification.

The collections in England have been personally collated, the examples in Germany compiled fromRuge, those in Spain from Wieder, in Helsingfors from Nordenskiöld, and in the Library of Congressfrom Lee Phillips' Catalogue. The titles and particulars given here for a large number of maps are, therefore, not from personal examination ; and though they are without doubt accurate in the main, the present writer cannot accept responsibility for them. The collations of the collections in theBibliothèque Nationale, the Royal Library, Copenhagen, the Lennox Library, and Yale Universityhave not previously been printed, and my thanks are due to their respective librarians for theircourtesy and help in supplying the necessary information. My object has been to gather togetherpreviously scattered information, and as far as possible to show the comparative rarity or frequencyof occurrence of the individual maps contained in my list. The result is far from exhaustive, but I hopeit will encourage a more extensive study of one of the most interesting and brilliant periods in thehistory of cartography.

Giacomo Gastaldi's first world map, on an oval pro-jection, one of the most important maps of the 16thcentury. It was re-issued, with slight variations, atdifferent dates up to the end of the century (seenos. 4-17), and its adoption by Ortelius as a basis forhis world map in the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum of 1570,gave the widest possible circulation to this presentationof the earth's surface. Ortelius, however, did notborrow directly from the first edition of 1546 but from

FRISLAND. (Island of)The identity of Frisland requires a special study. In the British Museum catalogue it is indexed under

the Faero Islands. The island, however, is largely, ifnot entirely, imaginary. Frisland appears both onmaps of an earlier and a later date, and by differentcartographers it is placed in widely varying longitudes. It appears in the Zeno Myth, and in some cases it iseven placed as far west as an island off the NorthAmerican coast.

CorrespondenceTo the Editors of

Imago Mundi

Having recently received from two of the largest libraries in the United States an invitation tobecome a member of the Friends of those institutions, it suggests a thought which may appeal tomap collectors.

We map collectors now have one—and only one—" institution " definitely devoted to our speciality,Imago Mundi. Why not "Friends of Imago Mundi."?

If its present high standard can be combined with punctual yearly publication, the collector ofold maps will be assured the nearest possible approach to a Cartographical Society, short of thatdream.

If a certain number of your readers agree to contribute £1 yearly, in addition to the subscriptionprice, toward the strengthening of the foundation upon which Imago Mundi stands, would it notbe a good investment in our hobby?

If you care to broadcast this thought, you can put me down as a charter member of theFriends of Imago Mundi.

Respectfully,

G B .
