Television Studio Complex Designed by Sony, our Television Studio Complex is a self-contained facility that provides an environment identical to most broadcast installations.

It is comprised of two television studios (studios A and B), three dedicated control rooms (production, sound and vision/lighting galleries), a VTR area and a central apparatus room.

The two studios are supplied with six camera channels. These may be operated with a free mix of camera channels which are nominally shared as a maximum of six cameras in Studio A or four cameras in Studio B.

Studio A is double height and provides suitable facilities for a wide range of productions extending to multiple set, audience and music or light entertainment shows.

Studio B benefits from a green screen infinity curve and is generally used for interview, news inject and smaller productions.

• Facilities for embedding, de-embedding and conversion of audio signal formats are integral within the central routing system and allow for maximum versatility.

Television Studio Complex: Production Control Room

The production control room offers a comfortable working environment with main and rear operational desk positions for up to eight production staff including Producer, Director, PA, Vision Mixer, Graphics Operator, Server/VTR Operator and Technical Coordinator.

Full picture monitoring is provided via the main monitor stack. This provides comprehensive source and programme monitors with individual operator monitoring facilities where necessary.

Audio monitoring is similarly provided via the stereo programme monitoring system and individually where required.

Sound Control Room

The sound control room offers technical furniture to house separate digital and analogue mixers with operational positions for the Desk Operator and an assistant. Local equipment and signal distribution/patching facilities are conveniently located, and a suitable range of source preview and programme picture monitors are also provided. Main audio monitoring is stereo with additional prefade monitoring as expected.

Lighting and Vision Control Room

The lighting and vision control room provides full facilities for the Lighting Director, Vision Control Operator, Console Operator and additional staff. These include a main monitor stack, individual preview picture and waveform monitoring as necessary. Stereo audio monitoring is also provided.

VTR Area

The VTR area within our TV studio complex offers full tape and file-based recording, transcoding and dubbing facilities. It includes a bay of five 19” racks housing most equipment, together with a two-person operating desk with monitor stack and main audio-monitoring.

Sufficient local monitoring is provided to allow for comprehensive rack- based recording, dubbing and transcoding functions without reference to the main desk and monitoring functions.

The VTR area also includes a range of tape, disc and file-based HD machines and legacy formats, as well as systems with dedicated FireWire.

For maximum flexibility, video and audio routing between machines is provided.

CAA and Dimmer Room

The CAA and dimmer room houses all the shared central technical equipment and the lighting control gear for both studio spaces. This includes the camera control units, vision mixer mainframe, central video/audio router, talkback matrix and all other supporting equipment.

All lines to the studio wallboxes and other remote destinations terminate in the CAA and are patched for onward connection as necessary.

Limited talkback and monitoring facilities are also provided and are sufficient for line ident/checking for this generally unmanned area.

Conversion Bridges

Conversion bridges are included to/from the CAA central router and an SD/DV ingest/playout system is provided with added DVD/Blu-ray transport.

Studio Complex: Media and VFX Studio

Bringing your production to life Our Media and VFX studio is home to a wide range of sophisticated technology, enabling the creation of rich visual effects.

Greenscreen cove Our Greenscreen cove is configurable to cover up to three studio walls and the floor with high quality Optical Green.

The screen is made from Velcro receptive material suitable for applying Velcro tracking markers. Screen lighting is provided from overhead Kinoflo Green fluorescent tubes.

Motion Capture The studio hosts a 20 camera Vicon Bonita Motion Capture system, with MoCap suits in different sizes and a full set of optical tracking markers. It also contains a dedicated Blade workstation.

Greenscreen cove area:• Approx. 6d x 9w 3h metres.

Studio Lighting:• The lighting system consists of

a 15 Amp lighting grid with 24 dimmable sockets and 6 DMX units, all controlled by a Jester lighting panel

• Lights available include 3x Arri 700W, 3x Redhead 800W, 3x Dedo Bi-colour LED and a selection of lighting accessories including soft lighting, C-stands, flags, light stands, sand bags, super clamps and black sheets to cut out green spill

• A jib with pan/tilt head and dolly & track is also available.

Studio Complex: Radio Studios

We offer two radio studios for hire, both identical in their set up. Each studio is sound-treated to ensure broadcasts are fully self-contained with no interference from external sounds.

Both studios hold one presenter and two guests but their full interconnectivity allows five guests to be interviewed by one presenter simultaneously.

Streaming is available through Middlesex University’s network or over the internet via a Shoutcast server.

Each studio has various light settings and controllable air-conditioning/heating for your comfort.

Designed for ADR and Foley work, the recording studio harnesses the power of an Avid HDX2 system running Pro Tools HD 12 for recording, editing, sound design, audio transfer/restoration and mixing projects.

Digital Media Workshop 1 is our 14-seat computer lab dedicated to graphics work.

Each workstation is equipped with an Apple Mac Pro, Wacom Cintiq touch display and NEC monitor.

The workshop features an AV/lecturer workstation with a full HD video projector, screen and stereo sound system.

Edit Suites

12 self-contained Post-Production / Edit suites, each with dual boot capabilities and the latest professional software.

Two suites also have live ingest and playout from the television studio via tie-lines, enabling the delivery of multi-cam highlights and playout live back to the studio. These suites also have talk back function so they can communicate with the studio team during productions.

Our Post-Production / Edit suites are networked together with a self-contained Avid system, comprising an ISIS 5000 for storage with 94 terabyte’s of space (RAID-5 protected).

Projects or media stored within the system can be accessed from any suite and audio packages can be sent directly to the studio. At any given time we can store data for up to 90 potentially connected clients.

Post-Production: Pro Tools Suite

Designed for sound editing, pre-mixing and mixing, our Pro Tools Suite offers a comprehensive solution for all your audio requirements.

Its advantages include Pro Tools HD 12 software, an HDX system with a C|24 control surface, brand new Genelec 5.1 monitoring and a variety of plug-ins from Waves, iZotope, AudioEase, Sonnox and Avid.

Video playback can be carried out within the Pro Tools system itself or alternatively our Media Composer Satellite connection offers this functionality.

There is also no need to export projects from Media Composer, as these can be opened using our Media Composer Satellite connection which in turn will synchronise with your Pro Tools session.

Both systems are connected via ISIS 5000 to all our other Post-Production/Edit suites.

Colour Grading Suites 1 and 2 Middlesex University’s School of Media & Performing Arts boasts two dedicated colour grading suites running industry standard DaVinci Resolve 12 software complete with DaVinci Resolve Advanced Panel (CGS1) and Tangent Element control surface (CGS2).
