Dear Mapleview Families,
Thank you!
I feel so fortunate to work for and be part of a community like Mapleview and Kim-
berly. Our families show time and time again their commitment to making this
school, school district and community excellent in every way. Most recently that sup-
port showed in our one big fundraiser of the year. We nearly met last year’s record
mark, despite having fewer students and families this year. Because of the hard work
and generosity of everyone involved, we will be able to pay off the balance for our
new playground equipment installed last year. We also will use funds from our fund-
raiser to get some of the things we normally cannot with our regular operating budg-
et such as extra playground balls, intramurals equipment, other technology and fun
furniture, like the red couches. Because of you, our families, Mapleview is a great
place to work and learn! Thank you again.
On another note, next week Tuesday, November 7th marks the end of our first quar-
ter. It is hard to believe an entire quarter of the school year has passed. At the inter-
mediate level parent teacher conferences are not until January. So as we reach this
point of the year, and grades are being entered, please make sure you contact your
child’s teacher if you have questions about his/her progress. Grades can be found in
Infinite Campus and can be checked anytime, not just at quarter’s end. However, for
about two weeks, you will not be able to see anything as teachers are putting in the
final grades. On November 15th, all grades will be final and can be seen at that
time. Communication and partnership between teachers and parents are very im-
portant for the growth of every student.
As always, if you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact me.
Yours in education,
Mr. Schultz

Intermediate Grading System
End of First Quarter - Progress Reports
The first quarter will come to an end on, November 7th. You can access your
child’s progress report after Wednesday, November 15th via Infinite Campus. This
is a great time to look at your child’s progress and talk with him/her about their
strengths and areas they can improve. Please do not hesitate to contact your
teacher if you have questions or concerns, as our parent/teacher conferences are
not until January.
As we continue to view the in-
termediate schools as an educa-
tional step between elementary
school and middle school, a
report card system has been
established that we feel will help
students with this transition.
Students receive letter grades in
Social Studies, Science, Comput-
er Applications, World Studies,
and Band. All other subjects
report progress using proficien-
cy grades such as Beginning,
Progressing and Secure/
Proficient, according to grade
level benchmarks. Subjects that
give letter grades also will re-
port an effort grade. Please use
your Infinite Campus account to
monitor grades throughout each
quarter. Feel free to contact the
school or your child’s teacher
with questions.

A reminder to parents that all attendance must go through the Main Office in advance. Please send
a note with your child, call the office at 788-7910 to speak to a secretary, or leave a message on
our attendance line. The office will then update your student’s attendance in Infinite Campus. You
may inform teachers if you so choose, however, the Main Office should be the initial contact to
avoid any unexcused absences. You are able to leave a message at any time outside of our normal
office hours (3:15 PM-7:00 AM).
Wisconsin’s school compulsory law requires students miss no more than ten (10) days per school
year. Once a student has missed ten or more days of school a doctor’s note may be required to
excuse the absence. Students who visit the doctor due to an extended illness in advance of the ten
days are also encouraged to send a doctor’s note to the Main Office excusing the ab-
sence. Absences excused by a medical professional generally do not count toward a student’s ten
day maximum. If you have questions regarding our attendance policy or a unique circumstance,
please contact Valerie Schroeder, the Mapleview Intermediate attendance secretary.
School Attendance
Veterans Day is November 11 Many of our families are directly impacted by family members who have served
or are currently serving our country. We are ALL impacted and thankful for
their service. Mapleview extends our sincere gratitude to the veterans and
their families for all the sacrifices they make so we can live the life we enjoy.

Please be aware that emergency medications that are provided for use during the school day will not be accessible
after school hours. Parents and students plan ahead to have emergency medication available during after school
activities such as clubs and sports. If an emergency arises and a student does not have their emergency medication
available, 911 will be called.
Our second round of intramurals will begin the week of November 6. Students are able to
socialize, learn new skills and get exercise. Thank you for supporting your child in this
way. We have great participation!

Wow! Thank you, thank you to
students, parents, neighbors and
friends for your support in our
magazine and gift fundrais-
er! Students are excited for the
November 8 delivery date of the
gifts and of course, their priz-
es. Those who earned a limo ride
(sold 18) and entrance to the
fundraiser party (sold 8) will be
hearing about the details
soon. The party is scheduled for
the afternoon of Wednesday, No-
vember 22. At the end of the
party, each student will help in
duct taping Mr. Schultz to the
wall. Judging by the look of our
sales, it might be difficult to get
Mr. Schultz free! Thanks again for
your support of the students at
Mapleview.

Winter Safety
Dressing for the Weather
Weather Cancellations and Delays Winter is right around the corner. If weather conditions dictate that there will be
no school or a delayed start, a decision to keep the schools closed is usually made
by 6:30 a.m. Parents with students in school receive a direct call, text and/or email
from our auto-call system since that is the fastest way to communicate with thou-
sands of parents at one time. As a reminder: If you have a new phone number or
email address, please update your information in the Infinite Campus parent portal
or contact your school’s secretary to update the portal.
Announcements are also sent to local T.V. and radio stations, please tune to local
stations such as these rather than call the school directly: WAPL-105.7FM, WHBY-
1150AM, WKFX-104.9FM, WEMI-91.9 FM, WGEE-1360 AM, and WOZZ-93.5FM;
and WBAY-TV2, WFRV-TV5, WGBA-TV26, and WLUK-FOX11. If other school
events, such as concerts or sporting events are also cancelled because of weather,
they are typically communicated through these stations as well.
The District’s website and Facebook page are not our primary way to communicate
school closures, so we ask parents to listen to the auto-call messages or tune in to
the radio and T.V. stations listed for the timeliest updates.
When the weather starts getting colder. Please make sure your child is dressed
appropriately to go outside. Recess is outside unless the temperature or wind
chill is below 0.
Once the snow starts to
fall, snow piles along the
road will be getting taller
and the streets narrow-
er. When dropping your
student off, please drop
off on the school side of
the street whenever pos-
sible. The more we can
keep students from
crossing the road, the
safer they will be. Also,
when dropping off in
front of the office, please
have your child exit your
vehicle as soon as you
are stopped along the
sidewalk. We have
found that if we have
four to six vehicles drop-
ping at the same time,
the line moves much
quicker and we can keep
the backups off Main
Street.

Sixth grade iChat groups begin in November for all sixth graders. What does that mean? I = Inter-
mediate School, I = Interests, I = Individual, I = Improvement. iChat’s are group meetings for all In-
termediate students to talk about their interests, who they are as individuals, and their plans for aca-
demic improvement through Intermediate School. School counselors lead these group meetings
multiple times during the year. Students will have a more focused conversation about their career
interests inventories and other self assessments as it pertains to them at this particular stage in
life. Students will have an opportunity to share their thoughts with their peers and ask questions in a small group setting. iChat’s are one way we will assist students in building and exploring their Aca-
demic and Career Plan (ACP), which will continuously be updated as students progress through the
middle and high school.
A note from Mr. Calmes: If anyone has items that they
would like to donate for use in my art classes, please
bring them into the office. If you are not sure if I will use
particular items, please contact me. I am always looking
for people to donate items from home or work. Thank
you!

Lawrence Hockey Night Mark your calendars! On Saturday, December 2nd at 4:00 pm the Lawrence Vikings take on Finlandia
and it is MAPLEVIEW NIGHT! All students and their families can get in free with a special ticket
(which will be distributed closer to the date). We are on the lookout for any hockey players in our
school. A few lucky Mapleview Bobcats will be invited onto the ice with Lawrence players during in-
troductions. Some of the team will come visit during lunch on December 1st to sign autographs and
meet the kids. We will make announcements, and reminders will be sent out closer to the date. If you
know of any hockey players who are interested in being put in the drawing for a chance to go on the
ice with the team, please let Mrs. Driessen in the office know.

“POSITIVE BEHAVIORAL INTERVENTIONS AND SUPPORTS”
November
Mapleview will be taking part in an all school celebration to celebrate the students filling up the Bobcash drum with Bob-
cash. The Bobcash that is earned by the students is placed in a drum that is located in our LMC. The students have earned
Bobcash throughout the first quarter from teachers to reinforce positive behavior in our school every day. Once the drum
reaches a specific line the students have then earned an incentive.
The incentive the students have earned is being able to watch a movie and have popcorn on November 17th. The students
will watch: “Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie”, This film is rated PG. It is based on the popular book series. If you would like to
preview it or have any questions, please call Mr. Schultz at 788-7910.
Here are some ways parents can stay active with their child’s school behavior from home:
Consistency is key to the success of PBIS.
Check your student's agenda or folder each night.
Acknowledge expected behavior.
Review the Mapleview PBIS Matrix (that was sent to you at the beginning of the school year) with your child if he or she
experiences behavior problems in school.
Work on a plan to help them with strategies for appropriate behaviors.
Support teacher and administrative behavior decisions.
Discuss problems privately with staff.
Remember that you are your student's first and most important role model.
Congratulations to all of those students for following the Bobcat expectations throughout the month of
October…Keep up the great work in November!

Parents-
Part of my responsibility as your child’s School Resource Officer is to connect parents with resources.
This article is for families with children that have, or will have, their own tablet and/or smart phone.
Those that fall into that category, you have a responsibility as a parent to educate your child on being a
good digital citizen, which includes appropriate, responsible behavior of your child while on a device.
Just as you taught your child how to ride a bike before giving them a bike, you are responsible for
teaching your child how to navigate the digital world prior to giving them their own device. Part of that
responsibility is monitoring your child’s device usage. To help you with that, Google has recently come
out with an app that makes your job much easier.
Google created an app called FamilyLink. The app is downloaded onto your child’s device as well as
your device, and it gives the parent access to a number of awesome features. Those features include:
Viewing the device location on a map.
Restricting the type of content your child can view on the internet.
The requirement to approve the download of any app on your child’s device.
Removing/disabling apps from your child’s device.
Locking your child’s device.
Viewing the amount of time spent on each app per day.
Setting a daily limit of time spent on the device before it locks.
Setting a “bedtime” for the device so that it locks.
I’m not an advocate for any particular company, operating system, device, etc. I’m advocating for safer
children. Parent involvement in their child’s digital citizenship plays a critical role in that, and this app
appears to be a great way to do just that. For more information about FamilyLink, you can read this
article published by Google: https://goo.gl/2CyN1h
As always, please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.

American Education Week Nov. 13-17, 2017
During the National Education Association’s (NEA’s) 96th Annual American Education Week, November 13-17, 2017, the Kimberly Area School District joins millions of educators, parents, students, and community leaders nationwide in raising awareness about the critical need to provide every child with a quality public education. It is a good opportunity to say “Thank You” for your ongoing support of students and our community.
Great public schools are a basic right and our responsibility to help EVERY child reach their potential.
In order to ensure that every student is given opportunities to reach their potential in academics, the arts and co-curricular activities, it takes the efforts of parents, staff and the community. Please take time during American Education Week to let your family, friends and neighbors know all the ways you and your schools are giving back to the community that gives them so much.
Thank you for your continued support in helping EVERY student reach their potential!
