The winter season has certainly been busy here

with learning opportunities, activities and construc-

no slowing down. Following is a summary of some of the activi-

ties our students have been involved in and many items just

around the corner.

*Student Council members recently spent a morning at

*In looking ahead to next year, student representatives

along with Maple Valley staff, have been looking at Raider Time

and Home-Rooms. Presently, the discussion is to move RT to

the beginning of the day and creating a RT/Homeroom con-

cept. Details are still being worked out, but we are looking to

roll out a modified new schedule beginning 4th quarter of this

calendar year.

*The district strategist is meeting weekly with staff mem-

bers to review student standardized assessments. This process

allows us to progress monitor all students and adjust teaching

strategies immediately to quickly and accurately address stu-

dents’ needs.

*Eighteen students from across different strands in the

Science curriculum recently returned from a trip to the Univer-

sity of Mary to study and learn about synthetic cadavers.

*The High School Spring Concert is just around the cor-

ner as the date for that event is March 13th. As always, it will be

a wonderful opportunity to showcase our students and their tal-

It is the mission of the Maple Valley School District to assure all students entrusted to the district are provided the educational opportunity to gain the skills, knowledge and attitude necessary to effectively function in a changing society.

by getting us all in one location, and the pending changes occurring at the

Sheyenne Valley Career and Technology center as they look at expanding their

programming to include agricultural courses. What this will exactly look like is

yet to be determined as their board is studying a variety of possibilities.

*A couple of important dates to put on your calendar:

*Freshman Orientation: Tuesday, May 1st @ 7pm

*Next years’ 7th Grade Orientation: Friday, May 10th

@ 1:30-3:25pm

As we wind down our wintertime activities and the successes we have had, we

anxiously look forward to the spring events and activities that come with the

thaw. Knowing that change is constant, and if we have been watching the

building taking place at the Tower City campus, we as people tend to get excit-

ed about change. Having said that, the students and staff are excited about the

learning and growing opportunities for the remainder of this year; but also,

anxiously looking toward the future.

Throughout this month’s newsletter you will find a wide variety of information about many events happening at Maple Valley. As always, the Maple Valley Staff and Administration are grateful for the support we receive from our pa-trons and the opportunity to teach and grow with you and your children!

To the family and many friends of the late Dan Johnson, we would like to express our sincere thanks and appreciation. Your many acts of kindness and sympathy continue to be a comfort to us in our time of sorrow. The verbal and written expressions of encouragement have shown us how blessed we are to have the love and support during this difficult time.

We are so thankful for the people Dan brought into our lives, and the lives he impacted. We hope each one of you keep his memory alive as you reflect on Dan’s positive and caring atti-tude.

Whatever you did to console our hearts, we are so very thankful.

Changes to School Immunization Requirements! High school juniors and seniors will need to complete the second dose of MCV4 (meningitis vaccine) before entry to school in the fall. As of January 1, 2018, the following changes have been made to North Dakota school im-munization requirements. Starting with the 2018 – 2019 school year, a dose of Tdap is required for eighth through twelfth grade, if missed at seventh grade. In addition, one dose of MCV4 (meningitis) is required for eighth through tenth grade. MCV4 is a two-dose series, with the second dose recommended at age 16, therefore, with the change, students are required to receive a sec-ond dose of MCV4 (meningitis, Menactra or Menveo) before being admitted to eleventh and twelfth grades. Vaccines can be given at CCHD or at another provider. Please provide the school with a copy of the student’s updated immunization record.

The 2018 child care immunization requirements and 2018 – 2019 school immunization requirements can be found at http://www.ndhealth.gov/Immunize/Schools-ChildCare/ Please contact CCHD at 845-8518 or the ND Dept. of Health Immunization Program at 701.328.3386 or 800.472.2180 (toll-free) with any questions regarding childcare and school immunization requirements. *In addition, there is another meningitis vaccine (MenB) that covers an additional serogroup (type) that is not in the vaccine mentioned above. The MenB vaccine goes by the name Bexsero or Trumenba. This vaccine is not required for school, but does provide additional protection against meningitis. For more information on this, please contact CCHD or your provider.

Student Council News

O n February 21st, our Anatomy & Physiology class traveled to Bismarck to visit the University of Mary’s physical therapy and nursing programs. We started our day by getting a lesson involv-ing synthetic cadavers. Cadavers are corpses that have been donat-ed by the deceased for medical purposes. Since these were synthet-ic, we were not actually standing in front of real corpses. However, their realistic appearance was incredible.

After our cadaver lesson, we got to tour the University of Mary’s nursing program. They showed our students the programmable mannequins that their nursing students use to practice working on patients. One mannequin was simulating a traumatic injury, such as a car crash victim. Another mannequin could simulate a woman giving birth. They also had baby manne-quins that could help simulate post-birth situations that can arise.

It was really interesting to connect some of the body’s systems that we have studied so far

to the cadavers.

The students enjoyed the opportunity to view the human body in a unique way.

Synthetic Cadaver Trip

On Thursday February 8th, the Maple Valley High School Student Council went to Fargo for a day of service. They started out at the Great Plains Food Bank in Fargo where they were given a tour of the warehouse. Then the students helped by scooping crushed cookies into bags to be distributed to food banks all over North Dakota and in Clay County Minnesota. In the afternoon, the students visited Homeward Animal Shelter for a tour of their facilities. The MVHS Student Council is holding a fundraiser for Homeward Bound Animal shelter from February 26th-March 9th. Mr. Wolf will be participating in some incentives to motivate students to donate.

The Barnes County Spelling Bee was held at VCSU on February 6th. Maple Valley students selected to compete included Gabrielle Ketterer-8th grade, Ashten Hannig-7th grade, Ethan Wenzel-6th grade, and Brielle Killoran-5th grade. All students were put through a series of spelling tests including writ-ten and oral testing against

students from other Barnes County schools. Students were then ranked within a 5th/6th grade category and a 7th/8th grade category. Gabrielle finished with 3rd place distinction and Ashten finished with 4th place distinction with the 7th/8th grade category. Congratulations to all who competed!

Students from the Maple Valley 10th grade English class competed in an Ag Day essay writing contest hosted by the Valley City Chamber of Commerce Agricultural Division. Students had to craft a well-written essay on “How Will Agriculture Feed the World”. Our very own Emma Baasch received 3rd place distinction with her agricultural importance essay. Not only did Emma win a “Chamber Buck Cash” prize, but her essay was also able to progress to the National Ag Day Competition. Congratulations Emma!
