John Wynnyk said he wantedthe sign up for this weekend’sevent and he’s already receivedcomments on it.
The Wynnyks plan to put inthe application in the third weekof May. The application needs togo to Maple Ridge council first,which then decides whether or
not to forward it to the ALC.If rezoned for commercial and
industrial development, Wynnyksaid it would be a “job-orientedpiece of property.”
“The general public that I talkto are in favour of commercial[development],” Wynnyk said.

A homemade, single-engineairplane crashed and burst intoflames moments after takeoffin Pitt Meadows on Sunday.
Firefighters were called to thescene shortly after 7:40 a.m.and found the plane in a ditch,engulfed in flames.
“The pilot was out of theplane by the time we arrived,”said Pitt Meadows assistant firechief Rob Chatton.
“The fire was fully involvedand the plane was subsequent-ly destroyed,” he added.
The pilot was airlifted toRoyal Columbian Hospital.
“He was definitely sufferingfrom some burns, but I don’tthink they were life threaten-ing,” Chatton explained.
The plane took off andimmediately began to veerright, reported Ridge MeadowsRCMP Sgt. Deron Brown.
The pilot had failed in afirst attempt to take off in theMustang 2, fashioned after aSecond World War-era plane,said Transportation SafetyBoard regional manager BillYearwood.
On its second attempt, theaircraft reached an altitude ofabout 60 metres when it lostpower and crashed in a ditchnear the runway, said assistantfire chief Brad Perrie.
The pilot had planned to flythe plane to Montreal in sev-eral stages.
Under Canadian aviationguidelines, any aircraft built byan amateur must obtain a spe-cial certificate of airworthinessfrom Transport Canada.
Before construction, thedesign must be approved andinspected before the first flightis taken.

Nominators should includea brief description of who theperson they’re nominating is and
how they inspire them and nom-inees should write about whatthey’re doing to make a differ-ence and why they do it.
The top 40 up-and-comingenvironmentalists will be hon-oured during Waste ReductionWeek events in October.

Metro Vancouver is planning a ban onkitchen scraps from garbage by 2015.

The message during Bob Masse’s electioncampaign was loud and clear: many Ridgeresidents want municipal garbage pickup.
Maple Ridge council decided last week tohire a consultant to look at all aspects ofgarbage collection, especially in light of aMetro Vancouver ban on organics that willbe in effect in 2015.
Masse has said that during the election thedesire for municipal garbage pickup was oneof the biggest concerns he heard.
Garbage pickup is a “very broad issue”that affects a lot of people, and therefore“we need to have a full consultation process
with the community,” Masse said.But, he added, when the information is
gathered by the consultant, if municipal gar-bage pickup isn’t cost effective, he doesn’twant it implemented for its own sake.
Since Maple Ridge doesn’t have municipalgarbage pickup, residents have the choice ofhauling their garbage to the Albion transferstation or contracting with a private com-pany to pick up their garbage.
This, according to the staff report,“encourages individual responsibility andfreedom of choice.”
In 2010, 66 per cent of Maple Ridge house-holds reported contracting out their garbagepickup.
The staff report notes that with four com-panies privately collecting garbage through-out Maple Ridge, there are often manytrucks going through, and “a District-widesingle contract, a reduction in the overallnumber of truck trips could be anticipated.”
The staff report also noted that if theDistrict decides to start a garbage pickupprogram, it will be hard to go back.
Organics make up 36 per cent of MapleRidge residents’ solid waste. When the banis put in place, if organics are found ingarbage, it will result in “significant fines,”according to a District staff report to council.
The tipping fees for organics is $56 perton, whereas for regular garbage it is $101per ton, providing a monetary incentive tocollect and dispose of organics separately.
The recycling society operates a weeklycurbside pickup service for recyclables,which costs taxpayers $68.16 annually.
The recycling society is not looking atchanging any services until the consultant’sreport, expected in the fall, is completed.
“We’re looking for direction from theDistrict before we do anything,” saidKim Day, executive director for the RidgeMeadows Recycling Society.

Despite the colder temperatures Fridaynight, along with showers and a fewunforeseen hiccups with fire alarms onSaturday, the sunny summer-like weatheron Sunday helped salvage, and in factbolster, numbers at the annual RidgeMeadows Home Show.
One of the community’s largest annualevents, held Friday through Sunday atPlanet Ice and the Albion fairgrounds,noted attendance of more than 22,000people. That’s upslightly compared tolast year’s 20,000,said show organizerCass Winder.
“We ended ona real high note,”Winder told TheTIMES. “It’s so gratify-ing, the way that thiscommunity reson-ates to what we do…they’re loyal. They love it, and they come.Even in the pouring rain, they come offer-ing us encouragement.”
Even though false alarms cleared thebuildings twice during the peak hourson Saturday and many visitors gave upand left, the warmer weather on Sundaythankfully helped regain those lost num-bers, she explained.
While public attendance is key to athree-day show of this magnitude, Windersaid it’s also imperative to get the rightmix of exhibitors, entertainment, andevents.
In this year’s “Everything” themed-show, she said most of the booths andspaces were sold out back in January,
bringing together a mix of new andreturning exhibitors.
In addition to participation of 375exhibitors, the three-day event also fea-tured a Family Fest Funzone, The TIMESBBQ School, West Coast Amusements car-nival, and the Body, Mind & Spirit PsychicFair.
While Winder promoted this year’sshow as offering “everything for yourhome, your family, your life,” she wasparticularly optimistic about the growth ofthe newest feature – the Outdoor Lifestyleand Leisure Show, which was in its sec-ond year and proving “incredibly” popularwith exhibitors and visitors.
“We’re ecstatic,” Winder said near theend of the 2012 show. “I can’t think of
any other word except‘grateful.’ I’m so gratefulto everyone. The 200-plus tireless volunteers,my committed team,exhibitors who keepcoming back and rav-ing about our show, thecommunity for its sup-port and attendance.”
Winder was alsograteful to the District
of Maple Ridge and the joint parks andrec department for what she describedas an “invigorated” partnership that sawthe show organizers working much closerwith municipal staff to plan for the eventand overcome on-site hurdles in both thearena facilities as well as the fairgroundsleading up to and during the show.
Watching a large crowd gather for theBobs & Lolo show on the main outdoorstage Sunday, Winder let out a big sigh.
“It’s a labour of love, and seeing it allcome together like this, it makes every-thing worthwhile. You forget the sore feet,the lack of sleep, the aching body, and allthe little fires. It’s all about this, peoplecoming together and enjoying the show.”

The number of drivers choosing thetolled Golden Ears Bridge increased by 12per cent in the first quarter of 2012, butstill fell short of budget targets, accordingto a TransLink report.
TransLink says bridge traffic jumpedto just under 2.5 million crossings, com-pared to the same period in 2011, or260,000 more vehicles.
The increase translates to about$750,000 more raised through tolls com-
pared with the same three-month periodlast year, according to the report releasedlast Wednesday.
The report said nearly 9.8 millionvehicles crossed the toll bridge in 2011.That’s up 12.5 per cent over 2010, butstill short of the budget target of 10.5 mil-lion vehicles.
TransLink CEO Ian Jarvis said heexpected numbers to improve over thenext year: “More and more motoristsare discovering the value of the GoldenEars Bridge as a much-needed direct linkacross the Fraser River,” he said.

ments to Maple Ridge council about theAlbion Flats, indicating they wouldn’t bein favour of pulling land out northwestof 105th Avenue, where the Wynnyks,SmartCentres, and other private land-owners have property.
The ALC said the land is still viable forfarming, albeit with significant drainageproblems.
However, their comments indicated thatthere was a possibility that land could bepulled out on the southeast side of 105thAvenue for commercial and industrialdevelopment.
Maple Ridge Mayor Ernie Daykin saidthat since he doesn’t know what theWynnyks’ application will look like, hecouldn’t speculate on whether he’d voteto forward it to the land commission ornot.
“There’s gotta be obviously a benefitto the community and a net benefit toagriculture,” Daykin said, adding that itshould be a “significant benefit to agricul-ture.”
Daykin said that council needs to beaware of the potential impact an applica-
tion for the northwest side might have onthe southeast side, given the fact councilasked for the land commission’s com-ments and those comments indicated theALC considered the northwest side stillviable farmland.
“That’s a reality we have to consider,”
Daykin said.He’s surprised SmartCentres, a mall
developer which owns about 20 acreson the northwest side of 105th Avenue,hasn’t indicated whether they will put inan exclusion application, Daykin added.
Sandra Kaiser, vice-president of cor-
porate affairs with SmartCentres, saidthe company is “still considering all ouroptions for our Albion Flats site.”
The only comparator Daykin said hehad was the Pelton application thatcame before council two years ago. Thatincluded community gardens, areas forincubator farms, and playing fields for thecommunity.
Daykin said he felt the benefit to thecommunity and agriculture in the Peltonapplication was “very significant.”
The Pelton application was, however,rejected by the ALC. In its decision, theland commission stated that “while someof the projects proposed have benefits tothe agricultural community on their ownmerits, the benefits do not compensatefor the proposed exclusion of lands.”
The area in Albion that the District isconsidering pulling out of the ALR on thesoutheast side of 105th Avenue would bethe subject of a “block exclusion applica-tion” whereby all properties, owned bydifferent entities, would be grouped intoone application.
Daykin said, in his opinion, “we gottamove forward... on something that has adegree of certainty on it.”

A Ridge Meadows RCMP officer, whowas off duty at the time, arrested animpaired driver Sunday.
Cpl. Todd Balaban arrested a man whowas showing “gross symptoms” of beingimpaired by alcohol, reported the localMounties.
Balaban saw the driver narrowly missseveral vehicles before the car pulledin and stopped at the Sasquatch Inn inAgassiz.

“When the corporal placed the manunder arrest for impaired driving, hebecame uncooperative and refused tocomply with requests being made, sothe Vancouver firefighter jumped in toassist Cpl. Balaban in restraining theman until a member of the Upper FraserValley regional detachment could attendand take the man in for breath samples,”said Ridge Meadows RCMP Cpl. AlannaDunlop.
“Even though police enjoy their timeoff, we are always alert to our surround-ings. In this case ourpolice officer felt the safetyof the public was in jeop-ardy by the way the manwas driving, and that hehad to stop this from con-tinuing,” Dunlop addded.
“We also applaud theactions of the off-duty fire-fighter for assisting Corporal Balaban theway he did. Together they stopped whatcould have been an unfortunate incidentfrom occurring.”
Twomore drivers off roadPolice investigated two more possible
impaired driving cases on Friday night.The first incident occurred around 10
p.m. when a 31-year-old Pitt Meadowsman was seen leaving Roosters Cabaretin the 19000 block of the LougheedHighway.
“He was stopped a short distance awayon McMyn Road and exhibited signs ofbeing impaired,” Dunlop said.
A demand for a breath sample wascomplied with, she confirmed.
The second case occurred around 11:30p.m. the same night.
“A vehicle was stopped after the driver,a 39-year-old Maple Ridge man, failedto obey a traffic light on the LougheedHighway near 223rd Street,” said Dunlop.
“In both cases the breath samples wereanalyzed at 1.5 times the legal limit of0.08 per cent,” the corporal added.
Both drivers were released from policecustody with a promise to appear in courtlater.

arrested for possession of a stolen car,which police suspect he was drivingwhile intoxicated.
Ridge Meadows RCMP received areport of a car heading northbound onthe Golden Ears Bridge from Surrey and
Langley into Maple Ridge.“A citizen followed the
suspected impaired driverto downtown Maple Ridge,where police interceptedthe vehicle,” said RidgeMeadows RCMP Sgt. DaleSomerville.
Upon seeing a police car,the suspect pulled into a residential drive-way in the 22500 block of Royal Crescent,the sergeant said.
A police computer check of the licenceplate number provided by the citizenshowed the Nissan SUV had been report-ed stolen to Burnaby RCMP on Tuesday,May 1.
Police quickly took the suspect into cus-tody without incident.
“We commend the citizen for theactions taken in calling police. This cit-izen kept police updated on the locationof the suspect until it was stopped by thelocal detachment members. Police havefuture plans to partner with MothersAgainst Drunk Driving to encourage allmotorists to report possible drunk driv-ers,” explained Somerville.
The suspect remains in custody pendinga court appearance. In addition to posses-sion of stolen property charges, RCMP arealso recommending a charge of failing toobey a probation order.

Preparationsbeat disaster
Over the years it has become prettyclear that disasters happen. They canrun from limited tragedies like carcrashes or wet basements or housefires, all the way to earthquakes, floods,and forest fires that escape containmentand wipe out entire communities.
While the biggest concern in theseparts – at this time of year – is thepossibility of massive flooding of theFraser River (and to a lesser extent, thenorth and south Alouette rivers), we’vehad nearly all of the standard disastersplayed out in B.C.
We’ve even had the occasional hurri-cane, to mix up our expectations a bit.
We can’t know exactly when or howa disaster will take place, and evenwhen we have forewarning, as in aFraser flood, it’s difficult to judge theprecise impact to expect.
That’s why general preparednessis important. And part of that has tobe about being personally prepared,and knowing how, when the chipsare down, to lend a hand to desper-ate neighbours. When disaster strikes,emergency workers may not reacheveryone for several days.
This week is EmergencyPreparedness Week across Canada. It’sa national awareness campaign thatencourages everyone to take three sim-ple steps to become better prepared toface a range of emergencies:
– Know the risks specific to yourcommunity.
– Develop a family emergency planand practise it.
– Prepare emergency kits for yourhome and your vehicle.

Oh!The excitement at school when
it was time to get out the con-struction paper, scissors, glue,and any crayons that were stillsticking out of their paper tubes –and make something for Mother’sDay!
We made collages.And we made round, foldy
things that did something (or atleast, they were supposed to)when you turned them upsidedown and twisted them and bentthem in half.
We drew portraits of our families and of our-selves – but mostly of our moms – and we putthem on cards.
We made strange, artsy things that probablymade sense at the time, and surely were fun todo when we did them.
And then we gave all that stuff to Mom.For Mother’s Day.And she loved it!It was her favourite!Whatever it was, it was always her favourite.And whatever my brothers or sister did – no
matter what it was that they did – it was alwaysher favourite, too!
And they were all her favourites with suchenthusiasm that we never questioned how somany things could be her “favourite.”
If it was made of paper, it ended up on therefrigerator.
If it was too big for the refrigerator, it went upon a wall.
And they stayed there forever, as proudlydisplayed as though they had been created byPicasso himself.
One year, our big project at school was madeout of a sheet of copper.
First we each traced our favourite antique caronto our individual piece of copper sheet.
Why a car?Antique or otherwise?
Most of our moms – and cer-tainly mine – couldn’t have toldthe difference between a Model Tand an Edsel.
Or between a Cugnot and aStanley Steamer.
Or a Hudson and a Cadillac.Or a Ford and a Chevy, for that
matter.Indeed, neither could most of
us kids.Our favourite antique cars – for
Mother’s Day!What was that teacher think-
ing?We traced the car onto the sheet, and rubbed it
with a wooden peg to bring it into relief.It was dipped into a solution to darken the
surface, and then we scrubbed it with fine steelwool to shine up the raised areas.
The whole works was lacquered to a shiny fin-ish.
And then the teacher brought out a special sur-prise: frames!
We actually framed our artistic creations inreal wooden frames.
I thought mine was pretty impressive.Quite a work of art.And I had had a great deal of fun creating it.But as I was bringing it home, I remember, I
began to feel a bit embarrassed with myself.What kind of a gift was a copper rubbing of an
antique car (it was a McLaughlin – a Canadianluxury car eventually absorbed by GeneralMotors) for my mom?
For Mother’s Day!?But of course, she loved it.She fussed and bothered over it, and my dad
simply had to hang it up in exactly the rightplace.
It was her favourite!Years later, while I was going to university, I
happened to notice that she still had that sillything hanging on the wall in her bedroom.
Only a mom can love like that.

Dear Editor,May 6-12 is national nurses week, and as
such, I am writing to remind the public ofthe many types of Nurses.
I am a nurse practitioner (NP), and Ithink it is time that NPs are seen in B.C.
NPs were introduced into B.C.’s healthcare system in 2005 to improve access toprimary health care services. NPs work inhospitals and clinics in urban and rural set-tings across the province, yet for the mostpart, their work has been invisible.
There are more than 200 NPs in B.C., andmore than 250,000 patients without regularprimary care providers. It’s time for peopleto know about NPs.
NPs in B.C. are primary care provid-
ers, licensed to assess, diagnose, and treatpatients with common episodic and chronicmedical conditions. NPs focus on preventivecare, but can also order diagnostic tests,prescribe medications, make referrals tospecialists, and manage overall care when apatient is sick.
In short, NPs are qualified to providequality, cost-effective, safe, and timely pri-mary care services, much needed in MapleRidge and other communities around B.C.
It is my hope that the government willprovide more opportunities for the public toaccess NPs in primary care.

raised questions about thecharacter of Adrian Dix [Dixcharacter ringing alarms,May 1 Letters, TIMES]. I’msorry anyone feels a need tolaunch personal attacks.
There’s more than ayear before an election.Muddying the water withpersonal attacks is cynical.People like Sandra Robinsonprobably know that if youmake people stop caring,they won’t bother to vote.
Christy Clark was electedstudent president of SFUin 1989, albeit by only sixvotes. Unfortunately forher, the Electoral StandingCommittee disqualified herelection on the basis thatshe broke campaign rules.
When a by-election wascalled to deal with the situa-tion, Clark ran again, andlost. Observers at the timefelt that it was because shehad been forced to run aclean campaign the secondtime around.
Is Clark’s past still rel-evant? Do we even trust thereports so many years later?If there is truth to them,why haven’t we seen moreof this in the mainstreammedia?
For that matter, areSir John A. MacDonald’sachievements any lessbecause he was alcoholic?
Voters need to understandwhat politicians are tryingto achieve, and a constantstream of character assas-sination can never replacebalanced coverage of policyand platforms. Personalattacks reflect poorly on theperson using them, and Iwould hope that the citizensin this community will notbe confused by the twistedhalf-truths that are about tobe delivered in place of thethings we really should belearning about our candi-dates and politicians.Elizabeth Rosenau, Maple Ridge

Many people acquire wealth by educating themselves,entrepreneurship, and hard work. Many start from scratchand hard-scrabble lives. Many are the engine for the better-ment of society by providing employment.
The greatest gifts of philanthropy are provided by thewealthy, such as Andrew Carnegie, Henry Ford, J. PaulGetty, John D Rockerfeller, Bill Gates, and Warren Buffet, toname a few, and let’s not forget Oprah Winfrey.
We expect that Mr. Maude, if offered his $1.5 million cut-off for being “fair game”, would donate it to charity.

The exhibition, Paint:The Painted Works of LyleWilson offers a rare, in-depth visual encounterwith some 40 paintingson wood and paper byVancouver-based Haislaartist, Lyle Wilson.
Opening May 5 at theart gallery inside The ACT,the exhibition reveals therange of traditional andcontemporary elementsthat inhabit Wilson’sevolving artistic vision.
This is the first majorexhibition to focus exclu-sively on Wilson’s paint-ings (the artist is also arenowned and accom-
plished carver inwood and metals),and to assemblesuch a significantbody of his work.

“He’s also leading theway in showing that itdoesn’t harm the [FirstNations] culture at all,”she said. “In fact, it leadsto more understanding. Ihope it’s the beginning ofan attitude of more sharingof information, because Ithink that can only be agood thing in the longerrun.”
Wilson said the exhib-ition is a way to showhis work to people, FirstNations, and otherwise,living in the southwesternsection of the province.
“As an artist you try toshare with as many peopleas possible,” Wilson said.“Is it important? Yes. Thefocus of the show is onpainting, but it has a sec-ondary thrust to share with
the Haisla [people]who have neverreally seen mywork, generallybecause they’re upnorth and we’redown here.”
Many of theworks on exhibitare images ofcoastal creatures
such as orcas and ravens,the undersea world, andeven stylized maps ofaboriginal territories.
The exhibition revealswith equal force a contem-porary voice that evokesthe artist’s concern forthe environment and theindigenous Haisla lan-guage, Duncan said.

This weekend 12-year-oldLydia Querengesser per-formed in front of a crowdon Saturday and Sunday atthe Familyfest funzone stageof the Ridge Meadows HomeShow. And Dale couldn’thave been more proud.
The classically trainedsongstress belted out 10 jazzstandards and show tunesfor the funzone.
“Lydia did great,” saidDale. “She has to diversifyher style to meet the needsof the audience,” she said,
explaining why Lydiasteered away fromopera at this particu-lar performance.
“What was greatwas that all the kidsand moms were updancing in front ofthe stage. She loved
it,” said Dale.In fact, Lydia, who attends
Grade 7 at Highland ParkElementary, has been per-forming since age six andis currently rehearsing withthe Young People’s OperaSociety of BC, for an originalopera titled The King WhoWouldn’t Sing.
She plays the lead femalerole of Aryanna, a bird whosings to the villagers andmakes everyone happy.
“Singing fills me up, itmakes me feel so good,”Lydia explained.

The tour takes place thisSaturday and Sunday, andmany artists will open uptheir facilities, do demos,and sell their ware.
Joie Pare is new suchartist on this year’s tour,and she is trying to build acareer out of her handmadeone-of-a-kind leather bags.
Pare began making herleather bags about a yearago. She established hercompany, named Wild-SideLeather, and has disciplined herself to work9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday.
Her bags are often made from recycledmaterial, using old coats, recycled hardware,old belts, and other paraphernalia. But, shedoes use new material as well.
Her latest creations are convertible bags,which can serve as a shoulder bag, a holsterbag, or a backpack.
After a year of working on her leatherbags, she has managed to hone her skillsand get better tools, thereby speeding up theprocess.
Her bags are hand-sewn and double-stitched. Pare likes to integrate lots of secretcompartments into her bags.
“They should last a lifetime – that’s mygoal anyway,” Pare told The TIMES.

While Pare is hoping tobuild a career out of herartwork, carver Bruce Rothelearned to whittle art out ofdriftwood almost by acci-dent, and it has becomea way to pass his time inretirement.
Several years ago, Rothewas at home just foolingaround carving a piece ofdriftwood, and in the end,he ended up with a carving
of a fish, surprising himself.He said: “Oh, I didn’t knowI could do this.”
After years of perfectinghis art, Rothe’s studio in hishome is getting crowdedwith his carvings, largelyof fish, but also of ducksand other birds, as well asChristmas-themed Santacarvings, and, he said, it’stime to start selling them off.

Friday, LeBlanc, a 32-year-old goalkeeper fromMaple Ridge, was inOttawa, meeting PrimeMinister Stephen Harperand FIFA president SeppBlatter, and dreaming ofher fifth Women’s WorldCup – this time in herhome country and city.
Vancouver was amongsix host cities namedFriday for the 2015Women’s World Cup inCanada.
Ottawa, Edmonton,Winnipeg, Montreal, andMoncton, were the others.Toronto, which is hostingthe 2015 Pan AmericanGames, didn’t submit abid.
“I shook many power-ful men’s hands,” LeBlancsaid with her typical tingeof humour.
“I thanked the primeminister for his supportand asked if he’d bewatching. He said, ‘Ofcourse’.”
Will LeBlanc be playing?It’s far too soon to tell.Her body, particularly herback, probably will decidethat.
But Canada’s charis-matic ’keeper was jump-ing up and down whenVancouver flashed acrossthe screen during the bigreveal. “Not very digni-fied,” she said.
