Quick, think number 13 and black cats. Unlucky? If

that’s the fi rst thing you thought of, chances are you’re

not sure why you did. For many North Americans, even

those who don’t consider themselves superstitious, it’s

an engrained part of cultural lore.

Here in Vancouver, where off shore buyers continue

to be a signifi cant driver in residential construction

and sales, a similar phenomenon is gaining increas-

ing acceptance. A combination of the words for wind

(air) and water, feng shui has long been a fundamental

design component throughout Asia. And today, many

savvy developers are taking note — whether they

believe in feng shui or not.

One of the main aspects of feng shui is the fl ow of “chi”

— energy — through the home. Furniture orientation

and placement of key features such as doors, windows

and fi replaces are crucial to achieving good chi. These

are considerations that can be built into a development

at the design stage. And for sales of existing homes, chi

can be improved with careful staging to avoid the risk

of Asian buyers rejecting the property.

“Even 15 or 20 years ago, some Asian buyers would

walk away rather than purchase a home with bad feng

shui,” says Manuela Mirecki, senior vice president

of marketing and design at Ledingham McAlister. “If

you’re a builder or developer, it’s naive not to take it

into consideration when designing a new project.”

Feng shui master Jerry King of White Dragon Consulting

agrees that it’s important to incorporate feng shui early

in the process. “Feng shui isn’t just about placement

of furniture, so if one waits too long, till after founda-

tion and fl oor plans are fi nalized, the violations may be

impossible to fi x.”

But some properties have fundamental problems, such

as site orientation or even street or fl oor numbering.

Living on the fourth fl oor, for example, is considered

unlucky because if the word “four” is mispronounced,

it sounds like the word for “death.” Mirecki says she

recently saw a house that had gone through rezoning

just to change its street number so instead of ending in

four, the last digit is now eight.

Like all science and art, mastering feng

shui require years of committed study,

but most of the broad strokes are all

about good design — plain and simple.

“There’s a lot of common sense

involved,” says Bill Szeto, president of

Otezs Project Marketing Group. “For

example, if you live in a house that’s

at the end of a T-street, every time a

car comes down that street at night,

the lights will shine into your living

room. Whether you call it a dragon

or not, it’s still distracting and

uncomfortable.”

Feng Shui Taboos and Tips• The fi ve feng shui elements

are fi re, wood, earth, water and

metal.

• Two doors that face each

other will create an energy

confl ict.

• If the back door is visible

from the front door, good

luck will enter and then go

right out the back. In an

apartment building, your

front door should not face

the elevator or a long corridor.

• Screens, furniture, plants or art pieces are

excellent ways to slow or redirect the fl ow of chi.

• Two of the biggest feng shui taboos are a mirror facing

the front door and a mirror facing a bed.

• A south wall is the best location for a fi replace

because south relates to fi re energy, but northeast and

southwest are also fi ne. Corner fi replaces can create

an unbalanced ambiance, and bedroom fi replaces can

both increase the heat of passion and cause heated

arguments. Leafy plants or water features can mitigate

negative eff ects.

• Always leave outdoor lights on

because fortune doesn’t

at Your PerilFeng Shui Dismiss

visit a dark house…but burglars

do. Just ask any security company.

• Water features or pools not only look and sound

pretty, they can actually reduce the negative energy of

being on the fl ight path of a busy airport.

Lying in the foothills of the majestic

Golden Ears Mountains and surrounded by

green space is where you’ll discover one of

Maple Ridge’s most exciting new master

planned communities.

Myron’s Muse at Silver Valley features

a selection of 69 exclusive contemporary

townhomes, ranging in size from 1155 to

2100 square feet, in the heart of the award

winning Silver Ridge neighbourhood.

Nestled amongst the natural beauty of

Silver Valley, Myron’s Muse off ers a collec-

tion of two and three-bedroom residences,

with a choice of four fl oor plans. “These

family townhomes are among the least

expensive in Maple Ridge,” says sales

manager Judith Adamick, who works with

partner Dan Skalnik.. “Yet they have larger

rooms, have beautiful open fl oor plans

and overlook a greenbelt.”

Designed by well-known Maple Ridge

architect Wayne Stephen Bissky, these

heritage-style homes are showcased by

shingled siding, stone accents and wel-

coming front porches.

The spacious open-concept interiors

feature two earth-tone colour schemes

and are distinguished by laminate hard-

wood fl ooring throughout the main living

area, plush carpeting in the bedrooms,

high ceilings and sprawling windows to

bring the outdoors in.

The gourmet kitchens include break-

fast bar (in most homes), glass-accent

backsplash tiles, Quartz countertops, dou-

ble under-mounted stainless steel sinks

and a stainless steel appliance package.

Thoughtful details like generous patios

off the kitchen and roughed-in central

vacuum with sweep option make these

homes really functional.

In addition, all of the homes off er two

parking spots, either tandem or double

side-by-side garages.

Myron’s Muse is an outdoor enthusi-

ast’s dream. From your doorstep, you are

minutes away from numerous trails at

Malcolm Knapp Research Forest, as well as

parks such as Alouette Lake, Golden Ears,

and the UBC Research Forest, where you

can walk, bike, and hike for hours.

Or if you prefer, meander the land-

scaped grounds of Myron’s Muse with its

mature trees and your very own children’s

playground, or put on your gardening

gloves and pass the afternoon away in one

of the three community gardens.

Myron’s Muse is like discovering your

very own little slice of unspoilt country-

side heaven where the air is fresh yet the

Town Centre is only a short drive away.

“Given the quiet location, proximity to

parks and schools, size of units complete

with double parking spaces and inclusive

of all fabulous stainless steel appliances,

these are the best buys in Maple Ridge to

date,” says sales manager Judith Adamick.

“If I lived in Silver Valley this is where I

would buy!”

At Myron’s Muse every detail has

been carefully planned to off er superior-

ity and aff ordable living spaces. This is

a rare opportunity to be part of a sce-

nic and vibrant neighbourhood minutes

from parks, such as walking trails, great

schools, shopping, culture, and entertain-

ment.

Completion dates are as follows: Phase

I will be available end of Feb 2015, Phase

II end of Oct 2015 and Phase III Spring

of 2016.

Priced from $255,900, come and see

how aff ordable a new home at Myron’s

Muse can be. Myron’s Muse at Silver Valley

presentation centre and show home are

open daily from 1 to 6 p.m., Wednesday

to Sunday at 23651 - 132 Ave. in Maple

Ridge.
